Models Of Inclusion In Child Care: Child Care That Works For Children With Emotional And/Or Behavioral Challenges: Family Member Perceptions, Shane Ama, Eileen M. Brennan, Sara Berman, Jennifer R. Bradley

School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

Although 5-10% of employed parents care for a child with emotional or behavioral challenges (EBCs) (Emlen, 1997), family support resources are notably lacking. A recent focus group study of 41 working parents (Rosenzweig, Brennan, & Ogilvie, 2002) found child care to be particularly difficult to find and maintain for families that included children with EBCs. Participants reported a number of barriers to child care arrangements that could successfully meet their family's needs. First, since few qualified providers had the expertise to meet the needs of children with EBCs, arrangements were difficult to find. A combination of the lack of quality …

Learning Days : Shifting Identities Through Collaborative Action, Ryan Richard Oliver Jan 2004

Learning Days : Shifting Identities Through Collaborative Action, Ryan Richard Oliver

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

chools across the country struggle to engage students in learning, particularly in the final semester of their senior year. At a small private school administrators supported two teachers and five senior students in working collaboratively toward new solutions. Using methods of participant-observation, this thesis examines the experiences of all five students who participated. Driving this research was an interest in similarity and variation in participant shifts in their sense of themselves as learners. Differences observed between students are best explained by variation in learned responses to previous learning environments. Levels of participation and identity shifts were influenced significantly by the …

Creating An Anti-Bias Children's Book, Leslie Ian Stewart Jenkins Jan 2004

Creating An Anti-Bias Children's Book, Leslie Ian Stewart Jenkins

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

The author researched how children learn racism, sexism, homophobia and other forms of prejudice from their parents and other adult mentors. What can be done to change the prejudice that predominates in the United States? The author discusses how to raise children who develop anti-bias personas and who become allies to people of color, gays and lesbians, recent immigrants, and the poor. The final project of this thesis was the creation of a children's book to be read by parents and their children together. The book centers around the experiences of a young white boy who moves to a diverse …

Towards An Assessment Of Reading Volunteer Performance : Four Case Studies Of Monterey County Reads Reading Volunteers, Lucas Salazar Jan 2004

Towards An Assessment Of Reading Volunteer Performance : Four Case Studies Of Monterey County Reads Reading Volunteers, Lucas Salazar

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

This paper describes the performance of Monterey County Reads (MCR) reading volunteers. In conjunction with the Panetta Institute for Public Policy and the AmeriCorps*VISTA program, the MCR program recruits, trains, and places volunteers into schools to read with children one-to-one from grades K-3. The program provides a mandatory two-hour training, which provides instruction on the basics of reading with a child and presents the expectations of the program. I developed assessment tools predicated on MCR training methods to measure the extent to which reading volunteers met MCR expectations, thereby providing an indication of the effectiveness of training. I recruited four …

Spatial Distribution Of Coast And Dune Buckwheat (Eriogonum Latifolium & E. Parvifolium) In A Restoration Site On The Fort Ord Dunes Of California, Heather Wallingford

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Coast and dune buckwheat (Eriogonum parvifolium & E. latifolium) are native plants to the Fort Ord sand dunes which are essential for the survivorship of the federally-endangered Smith's blue butterfly (Euphilotes enoptes smithi). Buckwheat was put at risk during the restoration process because the land was stripped of its vegetation in order to remove the lead left behind from bullet shells when the land was used as rifle ranges by the military in the past. The Fort Ord dunes of California have undergone immense restoration treatments in order to increase the abundance of native plants, like coast and dune buckwheat. …

Dual Language Immersion : The Educational Practices That Contribute To The Success Of English Only Kindergarten Students In Learning Spanish, Shari Nacht

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

The focus of this study is to learn what the formal and informal educational practices are that contribute to the success of English-only (EO) kindergarten students participating in a two-way immersion (TWI) program in learning Spanish. In order to research this topic I conducted a case study of two EO kindergarten students. Over an eight-week period I worked with each student once a week in a small group lesson. Throughout each lesson, I observed which teacher scaffolds proved to be most effective in helping the students not only learn Spanish, but also be able to access the content of each …

Monterey County Volunteer Agencies, Alice Mitchell Jan 2004

Monterey County Volunteer Agencies, Alice Mitchell

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

The Federal Probation office was faced with a great problem dealing with offenders. As part of an offender's terms of probation they must complete community service hours. Offenders are required to complete hours ranging from 100-400 hours. The Federal Probation office was lacking a set of resources available for offenders to volunteer. I created an electronic database, which consisted of Monterey County volunteer agencies willing to accept federal offenders. This database helps address the agency's problem of helping offenders complete all terms of probation.

Anomaly-Free Component Adaptation With Class Overriding, Atanas Radenski Jan 2004

Anomaly-Free Component Adaptation With Class Overriding, Atanas Radenski

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

Software components can be implemented and distributed as collections of classes, then adapted to the needs of specific applications by means of subclassing. Unfortunately, subclassing in collections of related classes may require re-implementation of otherwise valid classes just because they utilize outdated parent classes, a phenomenon that is referred to as the subclassing anomaly. The subclassing anomaly is a serious problem since it can void the benefits of component-based programming altogether. We propose a code adaptation language mechanism called class overriding that is intended to overcome the subclassing anomaly. Class overriding does not create new and isolated derived classes as …

The Political-Economic Dimension Of Pensions: The Case Of Japan, Gene Park Jan 2004

The Political-Economic Dimension Of Pensions: The Case Of Japan, Gene Park

Political Science and International Relations Faculty Works

This article examines how pensions are interwoven with the public and private financial system in Japan and the consequences for pension reform. A growing literature focuses on the multifaceted ways in which pensions are interwoven with the larger political economy. This study builds on this literature and finds that (a) public and private pensions have been integrated deeply into Japan’s system of developmental finance, (b) this integration has created new economic and political problems as governments have attempted to shift away from its developmental model through deregulation, liberalization, and administrative reform, and (c) because pension reform is intimately linked with …

Estrogen And Hippocampal Synaptic Plasticity, Michael R. Foy, Michael Baudry, Richard Thompson Jan 2004

Estrogen And Hippocampal Synaptic Plasticity, Michael R. Foy, Michael Baudry, Richard Thompson

Psychological Science Faculty Works

During the past several years, there has been increasing interest in the effects of estrogen on neural function. This enthusiasm is driven, in part, by the results of early clinical studies suggesting that estrogen therapy given after menopause may prevent, or at least delay, the onset of Alzheimer's disease in older women. However, later clinical trials of women with probable Alzheimer's disease had contrary results. Much of the current research related to estrogen and brain function is focused in two directions. One involves clinical studies that examine the potential of estrogen in protecting against cognitive decline during normal aging and …

Lean Product Development Flow, Bohdan W. Oppenheim Jan 2004

Lean Product Development Flow, Bohdan W. Oppenheim

Systems Engineering Faculty Works

A general holistic framework, also called a process—named “Lean Product Development Flow (LPDF)”—for organizing the engineering work of Product Development (PD), has been proposed as a contribution to the emerging field of Lean Systems Engineering. The framework is based on Lean Principles, with emphasis on PD value-pulling workflow pulsed by takt periods. The value is defined as (1) mission assurance/product quality, (the traditional goals of Systems Engineering) and (2) reduced program cost and schedule achieved by a radical reduction of waste. LPDF is recommended for smaller design programs based on a high degree of legacy knowledge, with technologies mature enough …
