Ninebanded Armadillo (Dasypus Novemcinctus), Michael T. Mengak
Ninebanded Armadillo (Dasypus Novemcinctus), Michael T. Mengak
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Scientists classify armadillos with anteaters and sloths. This tells us that they have poorly developed teeth and limited mobility. In fact, armadillos have small, peg-like teeth that are useful for grinding their food but of little value for capturing prey. No other mammal in Georgia has bony skin plates or a “shell”, which makes the armadillo easy to identify. Just like a turtle, the shell is called a carapace. Armadillos are common in central and southern Georgia and are moving northward. Only one species of armadillo lives in Georgia and the southeastern U.S. However, 20 recognized species are found throughout …
Trends In North American Vulture Populations, Michael L. Avery
Trends In North American Vulture Populations, Michael L. Avery
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
In recent years, interactions between vultures and human activities have noticeably increased. These interactions include nuisance roosts, damage to homes and businesses, livestock depredation, and collisions with aircraft. One major factor contributing to the upsurge in vulture problems is higher numbers of these birds. Both turkey vultures and black vultures appear to be experiencing major population increases throughout much of their ranges in the United States. During 1990-2002, Christmas Bird Count (CBC) data revealed annual nationwide increases of 1.79% and 5.97% for turkey wltures and black vultures, respectively. Estimates *om Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) data were 1.99% and 4.97% for …

Use Of Roadkill Data To Index And Relate Raccoon Activity At A Heavily Predated, High-Density Marine Turtle Nesting Beach, Richard M. Engeman, Henry T. Smith, William J.B. Miller
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Four years of data from a high-density marine turtle nesting beach at John D. MacArthur Beach State Park, Florida were examined along with data on raccoon road-kills from adjacent roads, and data on park attendance (as an index of local traffic) to make inferences about raccoon activity patterns relative to turtle nesting. Raccoon road-klls were found to diminish substantially during turtle nesting, even though local traffic was constant or increasing. Opossums, the only other mammal consistently found as road-kills, did not show a decrease during turtle nesting season, but they are not known as a primary predator of turtle nests. …

Monetary Valuation Of Rare Species And Imperiled Habitats As A Basis For Economically Evaluating Conservation Approaches , Richard M. Engeman, Stephanie A. Shwiff, Henry T. Smith, Bernice Constantin
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Management actions directed towards the conservation of species or habitats are usually measured in resource improvement. Nevertheless, the decision to select and carry out such actions are rooted in the available funding. Therefore, to truly evaluate the benefit/costs of a conservation-directed management action, the resource improvement should be in the same metric as the expenditures. To this end, we describe here a variety of methods for attaching monetary values to rare species and habitats. We also give examples of applications with which we have been involved to demonstrate how such species and habitat valuations have allowed economic analyses of conservation …

Determination Of Indot Highway Construction Production Rates And Estimation Of Contract Times, Yi Jiang, Hongbo Wu
Determination Of Indot Highway Construction Production Rates And Estimation Of Contract Times, Yi Jiang, Hongbo Wu
JTRP Technical Reports
The duration of a highway construction project depends primarily on the quantity or magnitude of the construction work and the productivity of the construction crew. In addition, many other factors may also affect the construction duration, such as the type of construction, traffic features, location (urban or rural site), and weather conditions. When a state highway construction project contract is bid, a reasonable time must set and specified in the contract documents for completion of the contracted project. The time for contract completion (often called “contract time”) is estimated based on the average completion times of individual construction items within …

Canopy Resistance As Affected By Soil And Meteorological Factors In Potato, Kamal H. Amer, Jerry L. Hatfield
Canopy Resistance As Affected By Soil And Meteorological Factors In Potato, Kamal H. Amer, Jerry L. Hatfield
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Precision irrigation requires a method of quantifying the crop water status or root zone depletion of water to determine when and how much water to apply to the soil. Changes in canopy resistance (rc) and canopy temperatures have the potential of being used as a crop water status indicator for irrigation management. A study was conducted on potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) grown in northern Egypt at Shibin El-Kom on an alluvial loamy soil for winter (20 Sept. 2001 through 20 Jan. 2002) and spring (1 Feb. 2002 through 20 May 2002) seasons to determine if r …

Book Review: Nitrate And Man: Toxic, Harmless Or Beneficial? By J. L'Hirondel And J.-L. L'Hirondel, J. L. Hatfield
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
The concluding paragraph of the book notes that “The history of nitrate is that of a world-scale scientific error that has lasted for more than 50 years. The time has now come to rectify this regrettable and costly misunderstanding.” The senior author of this book was a pediatrician who devoted a portion of his life to the study of methaemoglobinaemia in infants and the relationship to nitrate concentrations in water supplies. This book is not a biased casual overview of the nitrate problems and the levels in drinking water but an extremely thorough and thought-provoking analysis of our current understanding …
Biology Of A New Virus Isolated From Lupinus Nootkatensis Plants In Alaska, N. L. Robertson
Biology Of A New Virus Isolated From Lupinus Nootkatensis Plants In Alaska, N. L. Robertson
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
A new virus named Nootka lupine vein-clearing virus (NLVCV) was isolated from Lupinus nootkatensis plants that were confined to a relatively small area in the Talkeetna mountains of south-central Alaska. Annual surveys (2000–03) consistently found leaf symptoms of pronounced vein clearing and mosaic on 3- to 4-week-old plants in late June. Spherical particles ≈ 30 nm in diameter were isolated from these leaves. Virions contained a single-stranded RNA of ≈ 4·0–4·2 kb and one species of capsid protein estimated to be ≈ 40 kDa. The double-stranded RNA profile from naturally infected leaves consisted of three major bands ≈ 4·2, 1·9 …

Inbreeding Levels Of Two Ustilago Maydis Populations, Charles W. Barnes, Les J. Szabo, Georgiana May, James V. Groth
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Little is known about the population mating behavior of the smut fungus Ustilago maydis DC (Corda). To determine the amount of inbreeding that occurs in local U. maydis populations, two cornfields were sampled, one in North America (NA) at Le Sueur, Minnesota, and one in South America (SA) at Tarariras, Uruguay. These fields were chosen because of their geographic isolation and host management differences. Inbreeding coefficients (Fis) were calculated using data derived from amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) markers. Mean Fis values estimated for both the NA (20.08), and the SA (20.02) populations statistically are not different …
Comparison Of Aerodynamic And Radiometric Surface Temperature Using Precision Weighing Lysimeters, Paul D. Colaizzi, Steven R. Evett, Terry A. Howell, Judy A. Tolk
Comparison Of Aerodynamic And Radiometric Surface Temperature Using Precision Weighing Lysimeters, Paul D. Colaizzi, Steven R. Evett, Terry A. Howell, Judy A. Tolk
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Radiometric surface temperature (Ts) is commonly used as a surrogate for aerodynamic temperature (To) in computing the sensible heat flux term (H) in the energy balance. However, these temperatures may differ by several degrees, leading to possible errors (especially for large H) and their relationship is not well known. Previous researchers have established empirical and semi-empirical parameterizations of the radiometric roughness length (zor) or some related form (e.g., kBr -1 = ln[zom/zor], where zom is the momentum roughness length). In this paper, we estimated To – T …

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Southwestern corn borers, Diatraea grandiosella Dyar, were reared on a control meridic diet and diets that incorporated rubidium chloride (RbCl) or cesium chloride (CsCl) at the rate of 1000 µg/g (1 g/liter of wet diet) to evaluate the effects on biology of D. grandiosella and to determine whether the resulting adults are marked with the rubidium (Rb) and cesium (Cs) physiological markers. The effects of RbCl and CsCl on survival, diet consumption, larval and pupal weight, developmental time, adult deformity, adult longevity, fecundity, and adult dry weight were generally minor and seldom reached statistically significant proportions. Males and females …
Development And Survivorship Of Immature Angoumois Grain Moth (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) On Stored Corn, Joel Perez-Mendoza, David K. Weaver, James E. Throne
Development And Survivorship Of Immature Angoumois Grain Moth (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) On Stored Corn, Joel Perez-Mendoza, David K. Weaver, James E. Throne
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Life history of immature Angoumois grain moths, Sitotroga cerealella (Olivier), was studied on dent corn (Pioneer 3320) at 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, and 40°C and at 43, 53-61, 75-76, and 82-87% RH under laboratory conditions. At 10 and 40°C, none of the stages survived at any relative humidity. Temperature was the main factor affecting egg incubation period, larval-pupal development time, and egg and larval-pupal survivorship. The shortest egg development times occurred at temperatures of 30°C and higher, but they increased sharply as temperature decreased. Larval-pupal development time was shortest at 30°C. Survivorship was optimal at 20-30°C for eggs …

Oil-Soluble Dyes Incorporated In Meridic Diet Of Diatraea Grandiosella (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) As Markers For Adult Dispersal Studies, Jawwad A. Qureshi, L. L. Buschman, James E. Throne, Sonny B. Ramaswamy
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Mark-release-recapture experiments to study insect dispersal require the release of marked insects that can be easily identified among feral conspecifics. Oil-soluble dyes have been used successfully to mark various insect species. Two oil-soluble dyes, Sudan Red 7B (C.I. 26050) and Sudan Blue 670 (C.I. 61554), were added to diet of the southwestern corn borer, Diatraea grandiosella Dyar, and evaluated against an untreated control diet. Survival, diet consumption, larval and pupal weight, development time, fecundity, longevity, and dry weight of the adults were measured. Adults reared on the three diets were also tested for mating success. Some minor effects were observed …

Un-Making Law: The Classical Revival In The Common Law, Jay Feinman
Un-Making Law: The Classical Revival In The Common Law, Jay Feinman
Seattle University Law Review
This article describes the possibility of a classical revival in the common law and situates the revival in its historical context. Part I sets the stage by briefly summarizing a century and a half of common-law development. At the end of the Nineteenth Century, classical legal thought envisioned a highly systematic body of law through which courts could mechanically apply abstract legal concepts to reach determinate results, producing limited liability in contract and tort law and expansive property rights. Critics beginning with Holmes and notably including Progressives and legal realists attacked classical law as incomplete and incoherent. Their critique was …

Preface To The Justice In Mediation Symposium, Lela Love
Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution
On March 12, 2004, the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law held a symposium on Justice in Mediation. The papers below represent the first group of articles emanating from that event. More articles will follow in the next issue of the Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution.
New York Moveable Feast: Boundaries To Practice, Christopher Honeyman, Lela Love
New York Moveable Feast: Boundaries To Practice, Christopher Honeyman, Lela Love
Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution
Following the first flush of enthusiasm, it is becoming apparent that the dispute resolution field, like its predecessor professional fields, is vulnerable to the incentive structures and practice barriers built into both academic and practice careers. Also, what many of us think of as a national (or international) movement may be increasingly affected by local cultures. In collaboration with scholars and practitioners in a variety of cities, the Broad Field Project6 ("Broad Field") has been convening a number of dialogues about related issues, including a small series particularly focused on the local cultures of dispute resolution.
