The Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System (VERITAS) is the major next generation imaging atmospheric Cherenkov gamma-ray telescope in the western hemisphere and will be located in southern Arizona nearby Kitt Peak National Observatory. The VERITAS observatory will provide unprecedented sensitivity to photon energies between 50 GeV and 50 TeV. The first stage is an array of four telescopes to be fully operational in early 2006, with an expansion to seven telescopes envisioned for 2008. Gem Operation In Negative Ion Drift Gas Mixtures, J. Miyamoto, I. Shipsey, C. J. Martoff, M. Katz-Hyman, R. Ayad, G. Bonvincini, A. Schreiner

The first operation of GEM gas gain elements in negative ion gas mixtures is reported. Gains up to several thousand were obtained from single-stage GEMs in CS vapor at low pressure, and in mixtures of CS2 with Argon and Helium, some near I bar total pressure. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. Time-Dependent Speckle In Holographic Optical Coherence Imaging And The Health Of Tumor Tissue, P. Yu, L. Peng, M. Mustata, J. J. Turek, M. R. Melloch, D. D. Nolte

Holographic optical coherence imaging acquires en face images from successive depths inside scattering tissue. In a study of multicellular tumor spheroids the holographic features recorded from a fixed depth are observed to be time dependent, and they may be classified as variable or persistent. The ratio of variable to persistent features, as well as speckle correlation times, provides quantitative measures of the health of the tissue. Studies of rat osteogenic sarcoma tumor spheroids that have been subjected to metabolic and cross-polymerizing poisons provide quantitative differentiation among healthy, necrotic, and poisoned tissue. Differentiating Information Skills And Computer Skills: A Factor Analytic Approach, Judith M. Pask, E. Stewart Saunders

A basic tenet of information literacy programs is that the skills needed to use computers and the skills needed to find and evaluate information are two separate sets of skills. Outside the library this is not always the view. The claim is sometimes made that information skills are acquired by learning computer skills. All that is needed is a computer lab and someone to teach computer skills. This study uses data from a survey of computer and information skills to determine whether or not these skills are separate entities. Spread Of Butternut Canker In North America, Host Range, Evidence Of Resistance Within Butternut Populations And Conservation Genetics, Michael E. Ostry, Keith E. Woeste

Butternut canker is killing trees throughout the range of butternut in North America and is threatening the viability of many populations in several areas. Although butternut is the primary host, other Juglans species and some hardwood species also are potential hosts. Evidence is building that genetic resistance within butternut populations may be exploited for conservation and restoration of the species.
