Quantum Interference Effects In Particle Transport Through Square Lattices, E. Cuansing, H. Nakanishi

We study the transport of a quantum particle through square lattices of various sizes by employing the tight-binding Hamiltonian from quantum percolation. Input and output semi-infinite chains are attached to the lattice either by diagonal point-to-point contacts or by a busbar connection. We find resonant transmission and reflection occurring whenever the incident particle's energy is near an eigenvalue of the lattice alone (i.e., the lattice without the chains attached). We also find the transmission to be strongly dependent on the way the chains are attached to the lattice.

The Green-Schwarz action for a non-BPS p=2 brane embedded in a N=1, D=4 target superspace is shown to be equivalent to the Nambu-Goto-Akulov-Volkov action obtained via the nonlinear realization of the associated target space super-Poincare symmetries. Introducing a U(1) gauge field strength as a Lagrange multiplier, this p=2 brane action is recast into its equivalent dual form non-BPS D2-brane Born-Infeld action. Following the procedure given by Sen, the Green-Schwarz action for a non-BPS D2-brane is determined directly. From it, conversely, the dual form non-BPS p=2 brane action is derived. The p=2 brane and the D2-brane actions obtained by these two …

The coupling of the electromagnetic field directly with gravitational gauge fields leads to new physical effects that can be tested using astronomical data. Here we consider a particular case for closer scrutiny, a specific nonminimal coupling of torsion to electromagnetism, which enters into a metric-affine geometry of space-time. We show that under the assumption of this nonminimal coupling, space-time is birefringent in the presence of such a gravitational field. This leads to the depolarization of light emitted from extended astrophysical sources. We use polarimetric data of the magnetic white dwarf RE J0317-853 to set, for the very first time, constraints …

The unification of quantum field theory and general relativity is a fundamental goal of modern physics. In many cases, theoretical efforts to achieve this goal introduce auxiliary gravitational fields, ones in addition to the familiar symmetric second-rank tensor potential of general relativity, and lead to nonmetric theories because of direct couplings between these auxiliary fields and matter. Here, we consider an example of a metric-affine gauge theory of gravity in which torsion couples nonminimally to the electromagnetic field. This coupling causes a phase difference to accumulate between different polarization states of light as they propagate through the metric-affine gravitational field. …

Enhanced Mass Sensing Using Torsional And Lateral Resonances In Microcantilevers, L. B. Sharos, A. Raman, S. Crittenden, R. Reifenberger
Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications
We present a method to detect, with enhanced sensitivity, a target mass particle attached eccentrically to a microcantilever by measuring multiple three-dimensional modes in the microcantilever vibration spectrum. Peaks in the spectrum reveal a complex coupling between the bending, torsional, and lateral motions and detailed finite element models assist in their interpretation. The mass sensitivities of the torsional and lateral mode frequencies are an order of magnitude greater, and their Q factors significantly higher, than that of the conventionally used fundamental bending mode. These modes offer significantly enhanced mass sensing capabilities within the realm of existing microcantilever technology. (C) 2004 …

Cessation Of X-Ray Pulsation Of Gx 1+4, W. Cui, B. Smith
Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications
We report results from our weekly monitoring campaign on the X-ray pulsar GX 1+4 with the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer satellite. The spin-down trend of GX 1+4 was continuing, with the pulsar being at its longest period ever measured (about 138.7 s). At the late stage of the campaign, the source entered an extended faint state, during which its X-ray (2-60 keV) flux decreased significantly, to an average level of similar to3 x 10(-10) ergs cm(-2) s(-1). It was highly variable in the faint state; the flux dropped to as low as similar to3 x 10(-11) ergs cm(-2) s(-1). in …

Intensive monitoring of the innermost jet in the quasar 3C 279 at 43 GHz from 1998 March to 2001 April with the Very Long Baseline Array, in combination with previous observations, reveal ( 1) an increase in apparent speed from 5c to 17c and (2) a change in projected direction of the jet by similar to20degrees. These effects could result from a small increase in the intrinsic viewing angle of the jet nozzle from Thetaless than or similar to0.degrees5 to Thetaless than or similar to1.degrees6, with no increase required in the actual speed of the flow, which corresponds to a …

X-Ray Spectral Variability Of Extreme Bl Lacertae Active Galactic Nucleus H1426+428, A. D. Falcone, W. Cui, J. P. Finley
Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications
Between 2002 March 7 and 2002 June 15, intensive X-ray observations were carried out on the extreme BL Lac object H1426+428 with instruments on board the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE). These instruments provide measurements of H1426+428 in the crucial energy range that characterizes the first peak of its spectral energy distribution. This peak, which is almost certainly due to synchrotron emission, has previously been inferred to be in excess of 100 keV. By taking frequent observations over a four-month campaign, which included similar to450 ks of RXTE time, studies of flux and spectral variability on multiple timescales were performed, …

Blazars have traditionally been separated into two broad categories based on their optical emission characteristics. Blazars with faint or no emission lines are referred to as BL Lacertae objects ( BL Lacs), and blazars with prominent, broad emission lines are commonly referred to as flat-spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs). The spectral energy distribution of FSRQs has generally been thought of as being more akin to the low-peaked BL Lacs, which exhibit a peak in the infrared region of the spectrum, as opposed to high-peaked BL Lacs (HBLs), which exhibit a peak in UV/X-ray region of the spectrum. All blazars that are …

We present results from observations of 29 BL Lacertae objects, taken with the Whipple Observatory 10 m gamma-ray telescope between 1995 and 2000. The observed objects are mostly at low redshift (z<0.2), but observations of objects of up to z=0.444 are also reported. Five of the objects are EGRET sources and two are unconfirmed TeV sources. Three of the confirmed sources of extragalactic TeV gamma rays were originally observed as part of this survey and have been reported elsewhere. No significant excesses are detected from any of the other objects observed, on timescales of days, months, or years. We report 99.9% confidence level flux upper limits for the objects for each observing season. The flux upper limits are typically 20% of the Crab flux, although for some sources, limits as sensitive as 6% of the Crab flux were derived. The results are consistent with the synchrotron self-Compton model predictions considered in this work.

X-Ray Flaring Activity Of Markarian 421, W. Cui
Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications
We report results from a systematic search for X-ray flares from Mrk 421, using archival data from the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) satellite. The flares are clearly seen over a wide range of timescales. The quasi-continuous coverage of the source with the All-SkyMonitor (ASM) reveals frequent occurrence of major flares that last for months. On a few occasions, the source was intensively monitored with the more sensitive pointing instruments aboard RXTE. The data from these observations show the presence of X-ray flares of much shorter duration, ranging from weeks down to less than an hour. For the first time, …

The fundamental intramolecular frequency of a globular protein can be obtained from the measurements of acoustic velocities of bulk protein matter. This lowest frequency for common size molecules is shown to be above several hundred GHz. All modes below this frequency would then be intermolecular modes or bulk modes of the molecule and surrounding matter or tissue. The lowest frequency modes of an extended DNA double helix are also shown to be bulk modes because of interaction with water. Only DNA modes, whose frequency is well above 4 GHz, can be intrahelical modes, that is, confined to the helix rather …

Fourier-domain holography (FDH) is investigated as a candidate for holographic optical coherence imaging to produce real-time images of structure inside living tissue and turbid media. The effects of spatial filtering, the background intensity distributions, and the role of background noise in determining dynamic range are evaluated for both FDH and image-domain holography (IDH). The grating washout effect in FDH (edge enhancement) is removed by use of a vibrating diffuser that consequently improves the image quality. By comparing holographic images and background images of FDH and IDH we show that FDH provides a higher dynamic range and a higher image quality …

We report a possible detection of TeV gamma rays from the Galactic center by the Whipple 10 m gamma-ray telescope. Twenty-six hours of data were taken over an extended period from 1995 through 2003 resulting in a total significance of 3.7 sigma. The measured excess corresponds to an integral flux of 1.6 x 10(-8) +/- 0.5 x 10(-8) (stat) +/- 0.3 x 10(-8) (sys) photons m(-2) s(-1) above an energy of 2.8 TeV, roughly 40% of the flux from the Crab Nebula at this energy. The 95% confidence region has an angular extent of about 15' and includes the position …
