“’National Apostasy,’ Tracts For The Times, And Plain Sermons: John Keble's Tractarian Prose.”, Robert Ellison Jan 2004

“’National Apostasy,’ Tracts For The Times, And Plain Sermons: John Keble's Tractarian Prose.”, Robert Ellison

English Faculty Research

John Keble is perhaps best known for The Christian Year and his work as Professor of Poetry at Oxford from 1831 to 1841. In this essay, I argue that his prose is worthy of study as well. I focus on "National Apostasy," the sermon that John Henry Newman saw as the inauguration of the Oxford Movement; the 8 pieces he contributed to the Tracts for the Times; and his many contributions to the Plain Sermons, by Contributors to the "Tracts for the Times."

Bluetooth Enabled Ad-Hoc Networks: Performance Evaluation Of A Self-Healing Scatternet Formation Protocol, Rade Trimceski Jan 2004

Bluetooth Enabled Ad-Hoc Networks: Performance Evaluation Of A Self-Healing Scatternet Formation Protocol, Rade Trimceski

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Bluetooth wireless technology is a robust short-range communications system designed for low power (10 meter range) and low cost. It operates in the 2.4 GHz Industrial Scientific Medical (ISM) band and it employs two techniques for minimizing interference: a frequency hopping scheme which nominally splits the 2.400 - 2.485 GHz band in 79 frequency channels and a time division duplex (TDD) scheme which is used to switch to a new frequency channel on 625 μs boundaries. During normal operation a Bluetooth device will be active on a different frequency channel every 625 μs, thus minimizing the chances of continuous interference …

Constitutionalization Of Human Rights In Post-Soviet States And Latin America: A Comparative Analysis, Rett R. Ludwikowski Jan 2004

Constitutionalization Of Human Rights In Post-Soviet States And Latin America: A Comparative Analysis, Rett R. Ludwikowski

Scholarly Articles

This Article consists of four parts. The first, which is more general, addresses the question to what extent the system of governance adopted by the countries of the two regions affected the record of the states' protection of human rights. For instance, this Article considers whether democratization of the political system necessarily results in better protection of human rights. The second part analyzes the placement of human rights in the framework of the Latin American and post-Soviet constitutions. The third part identifies and discusses the problem of individual and group rights, an issue crucial for both regions. The fourth part …

An Investigation Of The Pricing Of Audit Services For Financial Institutions, L. Paige Fields, Donald R. Fraser, Michael S. Wilkins Jan 2004

An Investigation Of The Pricing Of Audit Services For Financial Institutions, L. Paige Fields, Donald R. Fraser, Michael S. Wilkins

School of Business Faculty Research

In this paper we investigate audit pricing for financial institutions. We modify the standard audit fee model for industrial companies by incorporating measures of risk and complexity that are either unique to or more relevant for banks, and that are used by bank regulatory agencies. For a sample of 277 financial institutions in fiscal 2000, we find that audit fees are higher for banks having more transactions accounts, fewer securities as a percentage of total assets, lower levels of efficiency, and higher degrees of credit risk. Higher fees also obtain for savings institutions, for banks that are more involved in …

Regulation Through Intimidation: Congressional Hearings And Political Pressure On America's Entertainment Media, Kenneth A. Paulson

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

This paper explores how Congress has shaped and limited the content of films, comic books, popular music, and television over the past century. Specifically, this report focuses on the path to "self-regulation" and industry-wide codes for these four media, and how government used pressure and influence to spur the adoption of standards.

Towards Heterogeneous Faith Communities: Understanding Transitional Processes In Seventh-Day Adventist Churches In South Africa, Alan Parker, Ph.D. Jan 2004

Towards Heterogeneous Faith Communities: Understanding Transitional Processes In Seventh-Day Adventist Churches In South Africa, Alan Parker, Ph.D.

Faculty Works

This dissertation examines racial transition toward heterogeneity in three Seventh-day Adventist congregations in South Africa. This dissertation aims to uncover social factors involved in this change as well as to set forth a theological direction with application to the local faith community.

The first section examines recent studies and literature on multiracial congregations, indicating a possible breakdown between theory and practice. Using insights from Kuhn, Gadamer, Habermas, and Geertz, a critical correlational approach is proposed using narrative, community-based praxis, dialectical thinking, and eschatological vision. The theological methods of Groome and Browning are combined to suggest a four-phase approach to practical …
