An Analysis Of Cost Overruns And Time Delays Of Indot Projects, Claire Bordat, Bob G. Mccullouch, Samuel Labi, Kumares C. Sinha

JTRP Technical Reports

A commonality among state Departments of Transportation is the inability to complete projects on time and within budget. This project assessed the extent of the problem of cost overruns, time delays, and change orders associated with Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) construction projects, identified the reasons for such problems, and finally developed a set of recommendations aimed at their future reduction. For comparison purposes, data from other states were collected and studied using a questionnaire instrument. The analysis of the cost overrun, time delay and change order data was done using an array of statistical methods. The literature review and …

Constructability, Maintainability, And Operability Of Fiber Reinforced Polymer (Frp) Bridge Deck Panels, Makarand Hastak, Daniel W. Halpin, Taehoon Hong Jan 2004

Constructability, Maintainability, And Operability Of Fiber Reinforced Polymer (Frp) Bridge Deck Panels, Makarand Hastak, Daniel W. Halpin, Taehoon Hong

JTRP Technical Reports

Recent advances in composite materials for civil engineering have created interesting possibilities for replacing conventional structural forms with components made out of fiber reinforced composite materials. Composite materials offer several advantages over conventional materials such as a superior strength/weight ratio, a better stiffness/weight ratio, a high degree of chemical inertness, and flexible custom design characteristics. Some of the potential down-stream benefits include lower life-cycle costs, lighter members, high corrosion and fatigue resistance, and higher live load capacity (Seible and Karbhari 1996). Composite materials are clearly having a major impact on how facilities are designed, constructed, and maintained. In order to …

Aviation : One Hundred Years Old., Sally M. Piccolo Jan 2004

Aviation : One Hundred Years Old., Sally M. Piccolo

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

Amidst the disturbing aftermath of September 11, 2001, the aviation industry is struggling to find a way to secure air travel in a world wrought with terrorist bombers, hijackers, and the like with one goal being to intimidate, subjugate, and demoralize innocent people around the world. Ensuring security and safety within a society is a daunting task, especially, in a free society, like that of the United States, where personal freedoms are the foundation of the nation. Regardless of your personal interpretation of the definition of freedom, the citizenry of the United States has historically reviled subjugation, intimidation, and demoralization …

The Economic Impacts Of Land Tenure Policy In Ethiopia. A Social Accounting Matrix (Sam) Based Computable General Equilibrium (Cge) Model Analysis, Hashim A. Ahmed Jan 2004

The Economic Impacts Of Land Tenure Policy In Ethiopia. A Social Accounting Matrix (Sam) Based Computable General Equilibrium (Cge) Model Analysis, Hashim A. Ahmed

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

Policy reforms are an integral and continuing features of development economics. These reforms are motivated by a variety of factors like adjustment to debt crisis and recunent external price shocks, the failure of central planning in alleviating poverty and as an approach to accelerated economic growth, the continuing push for democratization which places poverty issues more prominent and the advance in economic theory are but a few. In the case of Ethiopia, the reason is more mundane. Although all of the above factors no doubt play a crucial role in the ongoing debate on the country's economic policies, the motivation …

Exploring How And Why Women Become Involved In Relationships With Incarcerated Men, Katherine L. Takas Jan 2004

Exploring How And Why Women Become Involved In Relationships With Incarcerated Men, Katherine L. Takas

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

The concept for this research project originated when in the 1990s there were local news stories concerning Oscar Ray Bolin, a serial killer who was being tried in Florida for the murders of women in Hillsborough and Pasco counties. His lawyer's wife met him, fell in love with him, and married him in a death row wedding ceremony. This case brought about questions such as: Why do women get involved with killers? How do they rationalize these types of relationships? Do they consider their relationships with inmates to be normal? How are these women different from women who are not …

Stimulation Of Capacitative Calcium Entry In Hl-60 Cells By Nanosecond Pulsed Electric Fields, Jody A. White, Peter F. Blackmore, Karl H. Schoenbach, Stephen J. Beebe Jan 2004

Stimulation Of Capacitative Calcium Entry In Hl-60 Cells By Nanosecond Pulsed Electric Fields, Jody A. White, Peter F. Blackmore, Karl H. Schoenbach, Stephen J. Beebe

Bioelectrics Publications

Nanosecond pulsed electric fields (nsPEFs) are hypothesized to affect intracellular structures in living cells providing a new means to modulate cell signal transduction mechanisms. The effects of nsPEFs on the release of internal calcium and activation of calcium influx in HL-60 cells were investigated by using real time fluorescent microscopy with Fluo-3 and fluorometry with Fura-2. nsPEFs induced an increase in intracellular calcium levels that was seen in all cells. With pulses of 60 ns duration and electric fields between 4 and 15 kV/cm, intracellular calcium increased 200-700 nM, respectively, above basal levels (similar to100 nM), while the uptake of …

Regionalization Of Indiana Watersheds For Flood Flow Predictions Phase I: Studies In Regionalization Of Indiana Watersheds, A. Ramachandra Rao Jan 2004

Regionalization Of Indiana Watersheds For Flood Flow Predictions Phase I: Studies In Regionalization Of Indiana Watersheds, A. Ramachandra Rao

JTRP Technical Reports

The following five methods of regionalization of watersheds were tested with Indiana watershed and annual maximum flood data: (1) the L-moment based method, (2) the method based on hybrid cluster analysis, (3) the hybrid cluster method using rainfall data, (4) the fuzzy cluster method, and (5) the method based on artificial neural networks. The results of the L-moment based method and the hybrid cluster method with rainfall data were unacceptable because of the subjectivity involved with the former and the heterogeneity of the of the results obtained by the latter. The remaining three methods gave very similar results. The fuzzy …

Simplified Load Distribution Factor For Use In Lrfd Design, Elisa D. Sotelino, Judy Liu, Wonseok Chung, Kitjapat Phuvoravan Jan 2004

Simplified Load Distribution Factor For Use In Lrfd Design, Elisa D. Sotelino, Judy Liu, Wonseok Chung, Kitjapat Phuvoravan

JTRP Technical Reports

The “S-over” equation for the load distribution factor (LDF) was first introduced in the 1930s in the AASHTO Standard. Finite element studies, however, have shown it to be unsafe in some cases and too conservative in others. AASHTO LRFD 1994 introduced a new LDF equation as a result of the NCHRP 12-26 project. This equation is based on parametric studies and finite element analyses (FEA). It is considered to be a good representation of bridge behavior. However, this equation involves a longitudinal stiffness parameter, which is not initially known in design. Thus, an iterative procedure is required to correctly determine …

The Development Of A Highway Tort Liability Management System For The Indiana Department Of Transportation, Thomas Giraud, Vorasett Chovichien, Samuel -1962 Labi, Kumares C. Sinha Jan 2004

The Development Of A Highway Tort Liability Management System For The Indiana Department Of Transportation, Thomas Giraud, Vorasett Chovichien, Samuel -1962 Labi, Kumares C. Sinha

JTRP Technical Reports

The loss of states’ sovereign immunity in the 1970’s opened the gates for highway-related tort liability suits against the states. Between January 2001 and September 2002, the State of Indiana investigated and settled hundreds of highwayrelated tort cases, involving several millions of dollars in taxpayers’ money. There is a need to assess the frequency of occurrence and financial impacts of such claims, and to examine how the growth of highway tort claims could be arrested. This study aimed at reviewing existing highway tort liability risk management practices at other states for possible applicability to INDOT, developing a framework for managing …

Psychometric Study Of The Mahan And Ditomasso Anger Scale (Mad-As) In An Outpatient Cardiac Sample, Kimberly S. D'Andrea

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

Psychometric evaluation of the Mahan and DiTomasso Anger Survey (MAD-AS) analysis in an outpatient cardiac population is herein described. The MAD-AS is a newer instrument that measures the cognitive, affective, and behavioral components of anger and is beneficial in that it is brief. One hundred fifty cardiac outpatients and one hundred fifty non-cardiac dental patients were administered a demographic form that requested information about cardiac risk factors, the MAD-AS, and the STAXI-2, a widely used valid and reliable measure of state and trait constructs of anger. The MAD-AS factor structure, construct validity, internal consistency, and reliability were examined and found …

Development And Validation Of A Scale Of Perceived Control Across Multiple Domains, Beth Arburn Davis Jan 2004

Development And Validation Of A Scale Of Perceived Control Across Multiple Domains, Beth Arburn Davis

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

The importance of perceived control in people's lives is vast. Indeed, there is much research to support the notion that the perception of control is as important, if not more important, than actual control. This idea can be instrumental in therapy. Patients may have a sense of control in one area, but not in another, and this may cause problems for them. It is likely that an understanding of how much control they believe they have could help patients in therapy. This study outlined the historical and research aspects of the constructs of control and of perceived control, its general …

Realism Or Distortion In Predicting And Evaluating Exam Performance Among Depressed And Nondepressed Students, Michael J. Kinney Jan 2004

Realism Or Distortion In Predicting And Evaluating Exam Performance Among Depressed And Nondepressed Students, Michael J. Kinney

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

Cognitive behavioral theories suggest that depressed people have negatively distorted and inaccurate perceptions and cognitions. The present study measures the accuracy of cognitions by comparing predictions made by depressed and by nondepressed students when they estimate the scores they will earn on an examination. It also compares depressed and nondepressed students on their levels of satisfaction with their exam scores. No difference was found between depressed and nondepressed students in either their predictions of their exam grades or their level of satisfaction with their exam grades. This study fails to support the notion that depression correlates with negative cognitive distortions. …
