Cultural Adaptability Of Dental Hygiene Students In The United States: A Pilot Study, Katrina W. Magee, Michele L. Darby, Irene M. Connolly, Evelyn Thomson
Cultural Adaptability Of Dental Hygiene Students In The United States: A Pilot Study, Katrina W. Magee, Michele L. Darby, Irene M. Connolly, Evelyn Thomson
Dental Hygiene Faculty Publications
Dental hygiene students should prepare to competently provide services to culturally diverse patients; therefore, this study was conducted as a baseline to determine the cross-cultural adaptability of dental hygiene students. The sample consisted of 188 dental hygiene students attending four culturally diverse dental hygiene programs (N=108) and four non-culturally diverse dental hygiene programs (N=80). The culturally diverse programs randomly selected were located in the southwest, southeast and mid-Atlantic regions of the U.S., and the non-diverse programs were located in the northwest, northcentral, central, and southern regions of the U.S. Any dental hygiene program with students representing four of the five …

A Talented And Energetic Young Man: John Foster Dulles And His Preparation For Statesmanship, 1888-1937., Phillip A. Cantrell
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The dissertation is essentially a biography of John Foster Dulles, who was United States Secretary of State from 1953 until his death in 1959. This study, however, covers his life from birth in 1888 and stops in 1937, a decisive and important year in his personal development. Previous biographies have either focused almost exclusively on his years as Secretary of State or else, when they covered his early life, failed to see him in the full context of the era in which he lived or failed to fully explore some important primary sources. While beginning in a formal sense with …

Does The Child Online Protection Act Violate The First Amendment?, Susanna Frederick Fischer

The Supreme Court weighs in for a second time in the more than 5-year-old court battle over whether the Child Online Protection Act drafters have rectified the constitutional defects of the Communications Decency Act, which the Court struck down in 1997 on First Amendment grounds. In an effort to cure the CDA's lack of "narrow tailoring," the drafters of COPA have more narrowly defined the speech that is being regulated and have also narrowed the speakers who are subject to regulation.

Extreme Sports And Assumption Of Risk: A Blueprint, David Horton
Extreme Sports And Assumption Of Risk: A Blueprint, David Horton
University of San Francisco Law Review
A GROWING NUMBER of personal injury litigants stand outside the contours of tort law. Plaintiffs who are hurt while engaging in high risk recreational activities do not fit within a doctrine that uses "reasonableness" as its central criterion. Reasonableness hinges on whether the cost of an untaken precaution outweighs that of a particular harm. In many risky sports, the only way to avoid getting hurt is to forego the activity altogether. For most people, this is not a burden. Even if it is, the lost opportunity value is dwarfed by the omnipresent specter of grave injury. For example, consider the …
A Meaningless Ritual? The Due Process Mandate For The Provision Of Competent Counsel In Arkansas Capital Post-Conviction Proceedings, Megan K. Rosichan
A Meaningless Ritual? The Due Process Mandate For The Provision Of Competent Counsel In Arkansas Capital Post-Conviction Proceedings, Megan K. Rosichan
University of San Francisco Law Review
The result of ineffective assistance of state post-conviction counsel and the seeming inability to raise such a claim is dire. Under the Anti-Terrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act of 1996 ("AEDPA"), state post-conviction proceedings are supposed to provide a comprehensive review of a defendant's death sentence. Death-sentenced persons such as Mr. Lee, Mr. Kemp, and Mr. Noel, however, whose counsel failed to raise claims in state post-conviction proceedings, are in almost all cases barred from raising such claims in federal habeas corpus proceedings. The inability to do so is difficult to overstate because federal courts are the forum in which …

But I Thought He Had A Gun - Race And Police Use Of A Deadly Force, Cynthia Lee
But I Thought He Had A Gun - Race And Police Use Of A Deadly Force, Cynthia Lee
UC Law Journal of Race and Economic Justice
While widespread consensus exists that racial minorities are disproportionately represented as victims of police shootings, the reason for this disproportion is hotly disputed. This paper argues that in claimed self-defense cases, race norms or racial stereotypes often operate at a subconscious level to alter police officers' perceptions of threat and corresponding decisions to use deadly force. Nevertheless, society can help encourage police officers to overcome the inevitable influence of racial stereotypes on their decisions to use deadly force in the field. Internally, police departments can work on at least three fronts to control the use of force: recruitment, training, and …
The Ada Takes On The Movie Industry: Do The Disabled Have A Right To The Best Seats In The House?, Laura K. Mckibbin
The Ada Takes On The Movie Industry: Do The Disabled Have A Right To The Best Seats In The House?, Laura K. Mckibbin
University of San Francisco Law Review
STADIUM-STYLE MOVIE theaters have revolutionized the movie-going experience. Cushioned rocker seats with high seatbacks that recline, cup holder armrests, ample legroom, and marvelous lines of sight: the simple innovation of putting each row of seats on its own tier has made stadium-style theaters the most comfortable way to view a movie outside of one's own home. American Multi-Cinema Entertainment Inc. ("AMC"), the first group to establish stadium-style seating in its theaters, has described such stadium seating in its publicity materials as "'virtually suspend[ing] the moviegoer in front of [a] wall-to-wall screen.' " The audience is thus "'totally enveloped"' in the …
