Cloning And Molecular Characterization Of Calpain/Calpastatin Genes From Rainbow Trout. A Potential Biogenetic Tool For Monitoring Muscle Growth And Texture Development., Mohamed Sewalim Salem Jan 2004

Cloning And Molecular Characterization Of Calpain/Calpastatin Genes From Rainbow Trout. A Potential Biogenetic Tool For Monitoring Muscle Growth And Texture Development., Mohamed Sewalim Salem

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study demonstrated that rainbow trout muscle contains at least two forms of the Ca2+-dependent neutral protease calpain along with their endogenous inhibitor calpastatin (CAST). These calpain-system components can be separated with one DEAE-anion exchange column. Rainbow trout muscle calpains are less sensitive to Ca2+ than their mammalian counterparts. We described cloning and sequencing of the rainbow trout calpain small (regulatory) subunit (cpns) cDNA. This represents the first fish and lower vertebrate full cDNA of cpns. The rainbow trout cpns cDNA was used to retrieve the zebra fish and Japanese flounder homologues. We presented evidence that fish cpns unlike the …

State-Sponsored Terrorism: A Historical Comparative Analysis, Claudia Campos Daigle

Master's Theses

This thesis undertakes an examination of the social and historical contexts that lead to the continuation and maintenance of terrorist organizations using a cross-national, historical, and comparative analysis. In order to identify the conditions under which terrorist actions emerge or fail to emerge, four pairs of nations were chosen, (a) Libya and Egypt, (b) Iran and Saudi Arabia, (c) Syria and Jordan, and (d) North Korea and South Korea. One of each pair is designated by the United States Government as a state sponsor of terrorism.

While no conclusive findings were obtained from this research, it did reach important preliminary …

The Relationship Between Pre-Enrollment Factors And Promise Success., Jimmy R. Stemple

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The purpose of this study was to determine which pre-enrollment factors in high school contribute to PROMISE success in the West Virginia PROMISE Scholarship Program, using the 2002–2003 inaugural class of PROMISE scholars at West Virginia University. PROMISE success was achieved if a scholar attained at least a 2.75 grade point average and passed at least 30 hours during the fall and spring semesters of his or her freshman year. PROMISE scholars who accomplished both of these requirements were eligible to retain the scholarship for the following year. This investigation examined high school transcripts, standardized test scores, college grade point …

Preventive Steps For Pastoral Sexual Misconduct: A Seminar For Brazilian Pastors In The North American Division, Samuel Ramos

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

In recent years sexual misconduct among clergyman has received an unprecedented public profile as victims have become increasingly willing to speak up and the media has disseminated the stories of clergy abuse. An increasing number of people have been willing to risk their personal reputation and go public with their stories. The goal of this study was to prepare, present, and evaluate a seminar for Brazilian pastors in the North American Division, discussing the main reasons for a …

Promoting Financial And Spiritual Growth In The Seventh-Day Adventist Churches In The South Ghana Conference Through Stewardship Workshops, Alfred K. Adonu

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

The task of this dissertation was to discover the reasons for the poor financial strength and to develop stewardship workshops to promote spiritual growth and sound financial performance in the churches of the South Ghana Conference. Since its organization in 1988, the South Ghana Conference has not experienced consistent growth in giving. By year-end 2001 it had a baptized membership of 41,747 with 101 organized churches and 235 companies. During the same period, the annual tithe was US$479,674 with a tithe per capita of US$12.18. However, there is wide spread suspicion that many return a partial tithe. In spite …

Toward A Paradigm Of Servant Leadership For Seventh-Day Adventist Ministers In Korea, Youngsoo Chung Jan 2004

Toward A Paradigm Of Servant Leadership For Seventh-Day Adventist Ministers In Korea, Youngsoo Chung

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

Korean society retains a strong Confucian tradition, manifested by a strong devotion to family and an emphasis on hierarchy and vertical relationships. The Buddhist and Shamanist traditions provide a model of authoritarian leadership. These traditions have been modified to adapt to modem leadership concerns, but the hierarchal practice of power and authority-based leadership still prevails. The challenge facing Christianity is the prevalence of this existing leadership style. It is a barrier to the acceptance of the biblical model of servant-leadership. Effective leadership that is both biblically sound and culturally suitable is needed for the Seventh-day Adventist church in Korea. …

Programa De Discipulado Para La Iglesia Adventista Del Séptimo Día De Rio Grande, Albuquerque, Nuevo Mexico, Joel Soto

Doctor of Ministry Projects

A discipleship program is the key to maintaining a healthy church in constant growth. It also provides the opportunity to consolidate the believers in church philosophy, exercising faith through practice of spiritual life. The purpose of this dissertation was to elaborate a program that would retain new believers in the church, leading them to action in their spiritual life, and in the practice of lay activities.

The investigation revealed the causes for lack of participation in spiritual activities, in the practice and discovery of spiritual gifts, and intervention in missionary work. This program is expected to better-equip members so they …

Programa De Crescimento Da Igreja Para O Território Da União Sul-Brasileira, Jose Santos Filho Jan 2004

Programa De Crescimento Da Igreja Para O Território Da União Sul-Brasileira, Jose Santos Filho

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

The Seventh-day Adventist Church in the South Brazil Union territory (SBU) has become known for its quantitative growth. However, as one analyzes the population size of that region, the conclusion is that much more still needs to be done. Studies made by Christian Schwarz in several countries indicate that the number and quality of members may increase provided that certain biblical principles of church growth are implemented.

Method

The research was done through extensive analysis of previous studies regarding church growth. Biblical perspectives, as well as existent literature on the development of churches, lay ministry, pastoral leadership, training, and …

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

With little or no formal grief support provided at Florida Hospital, an intentional bereavement facilitation program was needed. Many of the problems individuals face can be traced back to unresolved loss. The grief support program at Florida Hospital provides numerous avenues for the grief process to take place. This study describes the development and implementation of a comprehensive grief support program at Florida Hospital designed to enhance the bereavement process for those in grief and to provide assistance to care-givers involved in bereavement facilitation.

Method

There were various methods used to evaluate the effectiveness of this program. All 219 …

The (Non)Taxation Of Risk, David A. Weisbach Jan 2004

The (Non)Taxation Of Risk, David A. Weisbach

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

A long line of literature argues that income taxes do not tax the return to risk bearing. The conclusion, if correct, has important implications for the choice between an income tax and a consumption tax and for the design of income taxes. The literature, however, on its face seems unrealistic because it models only very simplified tax systems, assumes perfect rationality by individuals, and requires the government to take complex positions in securities markets to hold in equilibrium. This paper examines the extent to which these problems affect the conclusions we draw from the literature. It argues that the criticisms …

A Qualitative Study Of The Reach Of Technological Determinism Into Mass Media Theory Regarding Internet Uses., Daniel Thomas Burns Jan 2004

A Qualitative Study Of The Reach Of Technological Determinism Into Mass Media Theory Regarding Internet Uses., Daniel Thomas Burns

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This is a theoretically based study on the theory of technological determinism and its reach into mass media theory regarding the Internet. Participants in this study were given Internet logs that allowed for their Internet travel purposes to be recorded. They were also given a survey that broke them into categories based on ideology and experience with the Internet. The data from this study suggest that technological determinism does play some part in an individualís use of the Internet; but is not a complete explanation. The data from this study suggest that other theories that were examined such as, agenda …

Yale Kamisar: Collaborator, Colleague, And Friend, Jesse H. Choper Jan 2004

Yale Kamisar: Collaborator, Colleague, And Friend, Jesse H. Choper

Michigan Law Review

Yale Kamisar was absent when I was first interviewed by a number of faculty members from the University of Minnesota Law School where he was then teaching. These sessions took place between Christmas and New Year's in 1959 (when I was a third-year student at Penn), at the annual meeting of the Association of American Law Schools, that year in St. Louis. Yale had planned to be there, I was told, but cancelled because he was behind schedule in completing an article. So while I didn't meet him on that occasion, I surely learned what would ring familiar many times …

Yale Kamisar: Warrior Scholar, Francis A. Allen Jan 2004

Yale Kamisar: Warrior Scholar, Francis A. Allen

Michigan Law Review

My association with Yale Kamisar dates back to the 1950s. At that time I became aware of the interesting publications of a young faculty member at the University of Minnesota. The articles were well done, most of them dealing with the Supreme Court's notable expansion of constitutional doctrine relating to criminal procedure, then at full tide, a field in which I also was writing. In addition, Yale had published a remarkable article on the subject of euthanasia, impressive for the thoroughness of its research and the clarity and force of its argument. Fortunately, I decided to write to Yale and …

On Kamisar, Killing, And The Future Of Physician-Assisted Death, Norman L. Cantor Jan 2004

On Kamisar, Killing, And The Future Of Physician-Assisted Death, Norman L. Cantor

Michigan Law Review

Tens - perhaps hundreds - of thousands of trees could have been spared over the last forty-five years had opponents of physician-assisted death only been content to let Yale Kamisar be their exclusive spokesperson. Their movement would have lost no significant substance or persuasive force, for Kamisar's 1958 article - Some Non-Religious Views Against Proposed 'Mercy-Killing' Legislation - presaged the shape and content of the subsequent forty-five year debate over legalizing physician-assisted death ("PAD" ). Kamisar's article preceded by years the development of a whole jurisprudence relating to the withholding/withdrawing of life-sustaining medical treatment ("LSMT") and the administration of pain-relief …

Checks And Balances In Wartime: American British And Israeli Experiences, Stephen J. Schulhofer Jan 2004

Checks And Balances In Wartime: American British And Israeli Experiences, Stephen J. Schulhofer

Michigan Law Review

Three years after an attack that traumatized the nation and prompted massive military and law-enforcement counter-measures, we continue to wrestle with the central dilemma of the rule of law. Which is more to be feared - the danger of unchecked executive and military power, or the danger of terrorist attacks that only an unconstrained executive could prevent? Posed in varying configurations, the question has already generated extensive litigation since September 11, 2001, and a dozen major appellate rulings. Last Term's Supreme Court trilogy - Rasul v. Bush, Hamdi v. Rumsfeld and Rumsfeld v. Padilla - clarified several important points …

Yale Kamisar: The Enemy Of Injustice, Welsh S. White Jan 2004

Yale Kamisar: The Enemy Of Injustice, Welsh S. White

Michigan Law Review

In the summer of 1978, Duke Law School hosted a conference in which a variety of speakers offered perspectives on Constitutional Criminal Procedure. One of the speakers argued that the Warren Court's criminal-procedure revolution created a backlash that ultimately made things worse for criminal defendants. In order to dramatize his point, he suggested, "Yale Kamisar is the enemy." When that speaker had finished, the Conference Moderator began his response by stating, "First of all, Yale Kamisar is not the enemy of anything, except injustice."

Stories About Miranda, George C. Thomas Iii Jan 2004

Stories About Miranda, George C. Thomas Iii

Michigan Law Review

It is no exaggeration to say that Yale Kamisar was present at the creation of Miranda v. Arizona. To be sure, the seeds of Miranda had been sown in earlier cases, particularly Escobedo v. Illinois, but Escobedo was a Sixth Amendment right to counsel case. Professor Kamisar first saw the potential for extending the theory of Escob edo to the Fifth Amendment right against compelled self-incrimination. Escob edo theorized that a healthy criminal justice system requires that the accused know their rights and are encouraged to exercise them. The Escobedo Court read history to teach that no system …
