"Optimal” Inflation Under Dollarization, Kazutaka Kurasawa Jan 2004

"Optimal” Inflation Under Dollarization, Kazutaka Kurasawa

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This paper analyzes the effects of dollarization, where a country (C) uses money produced by another country (M). We derive a general formula to determine the "optimal" rate of inflation, which maximizes M's welfare but does not take into account any loss to C. We show how this inflation varies with relative income size and output growth. Estimates of the "optimal" inflation rate are made for some countries. We also analyze a contract, under which M shares a fraction of total potential seignorage with C to induce M to inflate at a rate which leads to no seigniorage accruing to …

Ignorance And Want In The Works Of Charles Dickens, Emily Katherine Ferris Jan 2004

Ignorance And Want In The Works Of Charles Dickens, Emily Katherine Ferris

Honors Theses

The process of writing this thesis to complete my requirements for the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College began with a Directed Reading of five novels by Charles Dickens-Oliver Twist, Nicholas Nickleby, Bleak House, Hard Times, and A Christmas Carol. My intent was to investigate poverty present in the Victorian Era of England through these works of Charles Dickens. Upon further investigation, I focused my intent on questioning the social injustice attacked in each novel and the subsequent power that Dickens uses to fight this injustice. To begin with, Oliver Twist instituted a harsh indictment on the workhouse system. Yet, the …

Magic Hour's Niche In The Marketplace: The Process Of Launching A Photography Magazine, Summer Anne Hill

Honors Theses

This thesis is the result of research completed in the Journalism 401 and Journalism 501 courses. In Journalism 401 I came up with my own magazine concept, researched its potential in the marketplace, and formulated a business plan. This plan includes information about my magazine concept, its potential competition, a wish list of advertisers, and a circulation plan. In 501,1 spent months designing a 68-page prototype of Magic Hour, my photography magazine. I created a logo, a cover page, a table of contents, ten departments, two columns, and four feature stories for the magazine. The goal of this project was …

Grandparents Raising Grandchildren: A Comprehensive Understanding, Needs Assessment, And Development Of Intervention, Jacquelyn Jean Lee Jan 2004

Grandparents Raising Grandchildren: A Comprehensive Understanding, Needs Assessment, And Development Of Intervention, Jacquelyn Jean Lee

Honors Theses

The portrait of the traditional American family is changing. The emergence of single parent households and families built on two careers instead of one mark the more typical reminders of the developing family sphere. However, another broad trend has taken shape over the past twenty years as the result of a wide realm of societal shifts. The role of the grandparent in many modem families has been transformed from distant relative to primary caregiver, from grandparent to parent. Intergenerational households more than the once thought temporary needs, but rather, more often speak of long term commitments. The following thesis investigates …

The Role Of The Declining Status And Increasing Pluralism Of The Catholic Church In The Formation Of Religious Generation Gaps In Spain, 1936-1990, Allison Rene Ellzey Jan 2004

The Role Of The Declining Status And Increasing Pluralism Of The Catholic Church In The Formation Of Religious Generation Gaps In Spain, 1936-1990, Allison Rene Ellzey

Honors Theses

This thesis examines age-related differences in religious practice and opinion in Spain and the influence of the declining status and increasing pluralism of the Catholic Church in the formation of these differences. It argues that there are three distinct age groups with respect to external religious manifestations and that the socialization of these cohorts coincides with three distinct time periods of differing degrees of power and unity of the Church. The introduction lays a historical backdrop for the rest of the work, tracing the status of the Spanish Church from the Civil War through the 1980s. The second chapter defines …

Personality Effects On Perception Of Emotion From Audible Cues, Megan Diane French Jan 2004

Personality Effects On Perception Of Emotion From Audible Cues, Megan Diane French

Honors Theses

nil lcrences in personality traits lead to varied reactions to emotional judgments (Golim & CMorc. 2000). It was investigated whether higher levels of emotional clarity, intensity, and attention improve emotional reaction times and accuracy. Participants reacted to sounds by indicating the presence and description of emotions. Participants completed personality scales to determine individual levels of traits. It was found that higher ratings for any trait were related to accuracy. Faster participants were more accurate in their responses and increasingly so when possessing higher clarity. This group also had increased levels of intensity and attention. For those slower, attention was correlated …

Institutionalized Hypocrisy: Divorce And Politics In Chile, 1884-2004, Amanda Faye Mitchell Jan 2004

Institutionalized Hypocrisy: Divorce And Politics In Chile, 1884-2004, Amanda Faye Mitchell

Honors Theses

Chile is a country of many contradictions, and these contradictions lead to a great chasm between the needs of the people and the way in which the government tries to provide for those needs. Many of the policies and laws are in line with the doctrines of the Catholic Church, and these policies play an interesting role in the social landscape of the country. They create an environment in which the general population does not live in a manner that corresponds to the way that the Church claims they do. Therefore, the law based on Catholic doctrine often creates a …

Antibiotic Resistance In Northern Mississippi Wetlands, Shama Moktan Jan 2004

Antibiotic Resistance In Northern Mississippi Wetlands, Shama Moktan

Honors Theses

Bacterial resistance to antibacterial agents is a condition in which there is no susceptibility or decreased susceptibility to antibacterial agents that ordinarily cause cell death or inhibition of bacteria. Bacterial resistance to antibacterial agents is a quantitative measurement of the efficiency or concentration expressed in micrograms per milliliter or as inhibition zones in millimeters for the diffusion technique of an antibacterial agent against a specific bacterium. In vitro methods for measurement of antibacterial activity are available that are based on testing increased concentrationsof antibacterial agent against a bacterial isolate to identify at which concentration the growth of the bacterium is …

Spatial Variability Of Soil Electrical Conductivity And Its Response To Soil Physical Properties, Matthew David Sleep Jan 2004

Spatial Variability Of Soil Electrical Conductivity And Its Response To Soil Physical Properties, Matthew David Sleep

Honors Theses

The Soil Moisture Observatory (SMO) at the University of Mississippi (UM) is a 5 acre tract of a former agricultural field at the UM Biological Field Station. Preliminary investigations of this site included 60 continuous soil cores using the Geoprobe sampling technique. These soil cores were taken to a depth of 1.5 meters to correspond to the approximate depth of penetration for a Geonics EM38. The Geonics EM38 uses electromagnetic induction to measure apparent electrical conductivity of the soil. After three weekly measurement episodes using the EM38, the soil samples were taken. These samples were analyzed for particle size distribution, …

Feeding Behaviour And Niche Overlap Of Two Species Of Wolf Spiders, Winter Lee Williams Jan 2004

Feeding Behaviour And Niche Overlap Of Two Species Of Wolf Spiders, Winter Lee Williams

Honors Theses

The diets of two species of spiders in the genus Rabidosa, Rabidosa punctulata and R. rabida, were intensively studied. These two species generally inhabit the same fields, but display very different life histories. This study has three major objectives. (1) Quantitatively address the commonly held belief that these spiders are opportunistic predators (Le., predators that take prey in the abundances in which they occur in the environment). (2) Measure the degree of niche overlap in diet for the two species (as a measure of the potential for competition). (3) Speculate on whether the overlap in diet or other factors may …

The Emergence Of A Middle Class Among Turks In Germany: A Move Toward Cultural Pluralism, Eden Blythe Hegwood Jan 2004

The Emergence Of A Middle Class Among Turks In Germany: A Move Toward Cultural Pluralism, Eden Blythe Hegwood

Honors Theses

This thesis examines the recent development of a middle class among the current Turkish community in Gemiany. By following the generations of individuals of Turkish descent from the original guest-workers arriving in Germany in the early 1960s on to the third and fourth generations of German Turks, the process of middle class establishment over time becomes apparent. Paralleling the emergence of Turkish middle class, increased acculturation or cultural assimilation has occurred, which is also described herein in terms of generational accomplishment. Finally, this work seeks to determine the relationship between middle class status and integration among this migrant group in …

A Psychometric Investigation Of Measures Of Meaning, Gratitude, And Psychological Health, Natalie Lynn Cathcart Jan 2004

A Psychometric Investigation Of Measures Of Meaning, Gratitude, And Psychological Health, Natalie Lynn Cathcart

Honors Theses

Logotherapy, developed by Viktor Frankl, is a philosophy, a personality theory, and a means of treating emotional difficulties and establishing a sense of meaning and purpose in life. Meaning is the attempt to understand how events in life fit into a larger context. Gratitude is a generalized tendency to recognize and respond with appreciative emotion to other people’s benevolence. Gratitude is important to logotherapy because gratitude can be viewed as an attitude that flmctions as a pathway to meaning. Research suggests that both meaning and gratitude are positively linked to well-being and that a lack of meaning is linked to …

The Doctrine Of Equivalents And Claiming The Future After Festo, Joshua Sarnoff Jan 2004

The Doctrine Of Equivalents And Claiming The Future After Festo, Joshua Sarnoff

College of Law Faculty

In two recent cases, Warner-Jenkinson Co. v. Hilton Davis Chemical Co., 520 U.S. 17 (1997), and Festo Corp. v. Shoketsu Kinzoku Kogyo Kabushiki Co., 535 U.S. 722 (2002), the Supreme Court unanimously approved of the modern doctrine of equivalents articulated in Graver Tank & Manufacturing Co. v. Linde Air Products Co., 339 U.S. 605 (1950). The Court also extended equivalents protection to later-arising technologies and imperfectly reconciled the modern doctrine with the doctrine of prosecution history estoppel for amended claims. The Court's new doctrine conflicts with historic implied-disclaimer standards. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit has further …

The results of this study indicated a moderately strong positive main effect for an instructor's credibility on all of the outcome variables, and weak positive interaction effects were observed between instructor credibility and employment of relevance strategies on relevance and the meaningfulness dimension of empowerment. A significant main effect for an instructor's employment of relevance strategies was not found. The results of this study indicated the importance of an instructor's credibility, …

The Phenomenon Of Power In The Church: An Investigation And Analysis Of The Relational Dynamics Experienced In The Context Of The Assertion Of Authority, Steven R. Walikonis Jan 2004

The Phenomenon Of Power In The Church: An Investigation And Analysis Of The Relational Dynamics Experienced In The Context Of The Assertion Of Authority, Steven R. Walikonis

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem. There is a need for a greater understanding of the relationship that exists between the minister and the congregation. The quality of their relationship determines, to a great degree, the health of their church organization. As persons, ministers possess certain qualifications, abilities, and personality traits that enable them to lead. These comprise the minister’s bases of power. Leaders determine (often unknowingly) how their bases of power are used. Relational dynamics take place when the minister uses power and asserts authority. The purpose of this study is to determine whether or not a relationship exists between the minister’s power bases …

Neighborhood Characteristics And Crime: A Test Of Sampson And Groves' Model Of Social Disorganization, Ivan Y. Sun, Ruth A. Triplett, Randy R. Gainey Jan 2004

Neighborhood Characteristics And Crime: A Test Of Sampson And Groves' Model Of Social Disorganization, Ivan Y. Sun, Ruth A. Triplett, Randy R. Gainey

Sociology & Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

In 1989 Sampson and Groves proposed a model of social disorganization. In this model, neighborhoods with low socioeconomic status, high residential mobility, racial heterogeneity, and family disruption were predicted to have sparse local friendship networks', low organizational participation, and unsupervised youth groups. These, in turn, were predicted to increase neighborhood crime rates. Although Sampson and Groves' work represents the most complete model of social disorganization to date, it has only been tested twice and then on the same data set. Using data from 36 neighborhoods from 7 U.S. cities, this study examines extensions of Sampson and Groves' model suggested by …

Optical Properties Of Cadmium Germanium Arsenide., Lihua Bai Jan 2004

Optical Properties Of Cadmium Germanium Arsenide., Lihua Bai

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

CdGeAs2 is a nonlinear optical material that can be used in frequency conversion applications in the infrared. In this work, absorption and photoluminescence (PL) experiments were performed on over 200 CdGeAs 2 bulk crystals from 5 K to room temperature. The data can be explained by a model of three defects, including one shallow donor, one shallow acceptor, and one deep acceptor. The samples were grown by the horizontal gradient freeze technique, and as-grown unintentionally doped samples are p-type. An absorption band near 5.5 μm due to an intervalence-band transition is observed in those samples which have enhanced concentration of …

The Uaw, American Trade Policy, And The Transformation Of The Global Automobile Industry, 1945-1973., Mark A. Esposito

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In 1934, the U.S. Congress passed the Reciprocal Trade Agreements Act, which empowered the president to negotiate reciprocally-beneficial tariff reductions with foreign governments. The bill sparked a heated debate in congress. Protectionists believed freer trade would allow cheaply-made products to flood the American market, while liberal trade advocates asserted that freer trade would improve employment and contribute to economic recovery. Organized labor was divided on trade and employment issues in 1934. During World War II, however, free trade supporters, including much of organized labor, associated liberalized trade with full employment. Organized labor believed that full employment and fair labor standards …

The Impact Of A School Reentry Program On The Psychosocial Adjustment Of Children With Burn Injuries., Peter Girolami Jan 2004

The Impact Of A School Reentry Program On The Psychosocial Adjustment Of Children With Burn Injuries., Peter Girolami

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

School reentry programs are used commonly as a means of optimizing children's psychosocial adjustment when they return to school after a burn injury. Typically, school reentry programs include a school visit and the use of various tools (e.g., videos, presentations, and written materials) designed to educate peers/teachers about burns and burn care. Despite widespread use by many burn units, there has been little research adequately evaluating the outcomes of these programs. This study reviewed the literature pertaining to school reentry programs (e.g., description and purpose) and evaluated the effect of a school reentry program on the psychosocial adjustment (e.g., social …
