Characteristics Of Help-Seeking Among First-Year Community College Students, Patricia A. Smith Jan 2004

Characteristics Of Help-Seeking Among First-Year Community College Students, Patricia A. Smith

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Health trends among freshmen entering college indicate that 2-year college students are especially vulnerable to engaging in risky health behaviors, yet many do not seek help. There was a need to more directly assess those who use college health services and factors that enable them to seek help when others do not.

The purpose of this study was to examine factors associated with help-seeking among two groups of first-year community college students: those who utilized the student health center and those who had not.

This study used a cross-sectional study design to examine differences between first year community college students …

Enhancement Of Carbamzepine Solubility Using Selected Water Soluble Polymers And A Solid Dispersion Technique, Sameer Late Jan 2004

Enhancement Of Carbamzepine Solubility Using Selected Water Soluble Polymers And A Solid Dispersion Technique, Sameer Late

Open Access Master's Theses

With the recent advent of combinatorial chemistry and high throughput screening of potentially therapeutic agents, the number of poorly soluble drug candidate has risen sharply and the formulation of poorly soluble compounds for oral delivery now presents one of the most frequent and greatest challenge to formulation scientists in the pharmaceutical industry. There are certain drugs for which solubility has presented a challenge to the development of a suitable formulation for oral administration. And one of these drugs is carbamazepine. In the literature, solid dispersions have shown tremendous potential for improving drug solubility and dissolution.

In this study the main …

Diel Activity Patterns Of The Louisiana Pine Snakes (Pituophis Ruthveni) In Eastern Texas, Marc J. Ealy, Robert R. Fleet, D. Craig Rudolph Jan 2004

Diel Activity Patterns Of The Louisiana Pine Snakes (Pituophis Ruthveni) In Eastern Texas, Marc J. Ealy, Robert R. Fleet, D. Craig Rudolph

Faculty Publications

This study examined the diel activity patterns of six Louisiana pine snakes in eastern Texas using radio-telemetry. snakes were monitored for 44 days on two study areas from May to October 1996. Louisana pine snakes were primarily diurnal with moderate crepuscular activity, spending the night within pocket gopher burrows or inactive on the surface. During daylight hours, snakes spent approximately 59% of their time underground within gopher burrows, burned out/rotten stumps, or nine-branded armadillo (Dasypus novemcinctus) burrows. Remaining time was spent on the surface either close to subteranean refuge, or in long distance movements that generally terminet at …

Invariant Hypothesis Testing With Applications In Signal Processing, Joseph R. Gabriel Jan 2004

Invariant Hypothesis Testing With Applications In Signal Processing, Joseph R. Gabriel

Open Access Dissertations

Statistical hypothesis testing has application in many areas of signal processing such as signal detection, classification, wireless communications, and image processing. The applications usually have unknown parameters which result in hypothesis testing problems that are composite, and for which an optimal test, such as a uniformly most powerful or minimum probability of error test, may not exist. The problem addressed by this dissertation, is to apply the Neyman-Pearson theory of hypothesis testing, in which tests are derived as solutions of a stated optimum problem, to signal processing applications. In composite hypothesis testing applications, the problem itself may be invariant, in …

Regulation Of Cra, A Regulatory Gene Of Glycolytic And Gluconeogenic Pathways In Salmonella Enterica Serovar Typhimurium, James H. Allen Jan 2004

Regulation Of Cra, A Regulatory Gene Of Glycolytic And Gluconeogenic Pathways In Salmonella Enterica Serovar Typhimurium, James H. Allen

Open Access Dissertations

The Cra protein is a global regulator of carbon and energy metabolism for glycolysis and gluconeogenesis. The live oral vaccine candidate, Salmonella typhimurium SR-11 Fad, is unable to utilize gluconeogenic substrates as sole carbon sources and is avirulent and protective in BALB/c mice. Furthemore, the era gene is interrupted in this strain of Salmonella. The cra gene was suspected to be regulated by another global regulator, acetyl phosphate. To further investigate the regulation of the cra gene and to determine if gluconeogenesis is linked to virulence, mutations in the gluconeogenic genes fbp (fructose-1,6-bisphosphatase), maeB (NADP-dependent malic enzyme), and sfcA …

Determining Components Of Fluorophoric Dom In Narragansett Bay Using Fluorescence Eems And Parafac, Jessica Dombroski Jan 2004

Determining Components Of Fluorophoric Dom In Narragansett Bay Using Fluorescence Eems And Parafac, Jessica Dombroski

Open Access Master's Theses

Fluorophoric dissolved organic matter (FDOM) is an important component of the carbon cycle, factors in nutrient cycling, plays a role in determining the fates of trace metals and hydrophobic organic contaminants, and influences the inherent optical properties of water, affecting photosynthetic activities, productivity, and abundance of organisms in the area.

Fluorescence spectroscopy is a sensitive analytical method that can be used in conjunction with the canonical decomposition parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) to separate component fluorescence signatures embedded in excitation-emission matrices (EEMs) of complex chemical mixtures. In this study, the methods of fluorescence spectroscopy and PARAFAC were used to determine the …

Guaging Team Culture For Gay Student Athletes: A Descriptive Examination Of Intercollegiate Football, Amy L. Apicerno Jan 2004

Guaging Team Culture For Gay Student Athletes: A Descriptive Examination Of Intercollegiate Football, Amy L. Apicerno

Open Access Master's Theses

The purpose of this exploratory study was to learn more about Division I-A and Division I-AA collegiate football team culture and how it relates to gay student athletes. The study attempted to gauge player reactions to the presence of a gay teammate. It used qualitative methods and convenience sampling with phone interviews and a three part inquiry.

Twenty-eight scholar athletes participated, including eleven Division I-AA players and 17 from Division I-A. All were current players and attended geographically diverse institutions from four regions of the country. Telephone interview responses were transcribed by the interviewer, and responses were color coded by …

Survival During And After Khmer Rouge, Sara S. Brown Jan 2004

Survival During And After Khmer Rouge, Sara S. Brown

Open Access Master's Theses

My personal life trauma experiences during the Khmer Rouge regime are described in this paper along with applications to Constructivist Self Development Theory (CSDT). This theory provides a basis for understanding the interrelatedness of biological and psychological self adaptation necessary to surviving and maintaining a consistent sense of self and the world. Five areas of self that were described in CSDT and which were applicable to my experiences of trauma are as follows:

  1. Frame of reference: one's ability of understanding self and world, including spirituality. Although I was only seven years old at the time, somehow I understood the events …

Endless Enlightenment: Eye-Operated Technology And The Political Economy Of Vision, Michael Gardiner Jan 2004

Endless Enlightenment: Eye-Operated Technology And The Political Economy Of Vision, Michael Gardiner

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

Despite a residual popular temptation to see the posts of cultural analysis as signs of temporal closure, the logic of global visual media is strengthening, not weakening, metaphors of visibility which remain intact from the Enlightenment. Here I describe a stand-off between post-Enlightenment critiques (as in some sectors of Cultural Studies) and a narrow power base which is defined by producing light and managing the very conditions of visibility. For the world's most powerful state, still strongly bound to its original Enlightenment foundations, intervention into other states' sovereignty is increasingly justified by evidence from spy planes (rather than …
