The Influence Of Biology And Commitment Beliefs On Jealousy Responses, Rebecca L. Ammon Jan 2004

The Influence Of Biology And Commitment Beliefs On Jealousy Responses, Rebecca L. Ammon

All Volumes (2001-2008)

Research on biological sex differences in romantic jealousy suggests that males are more upset by sexual infidelity and females are more upset by emotional infidelity. Researchers identify two types of jealousy (i.e., sexual and emotional) and two types of commitment (i.e., sexual exclusivity and relational duration). The type of jealousy experienced may be a rational or emotional response to different commitment beliefs rather than dependent on biological sex. A sample of 230 college students completed various measures of commitment and jealousy as part of an online survey. People who valued sexually exclusive relationships were more distressed by sexual infidelity. People …

Incidence Of Skin Trauma Associated With Participation In Intercollegiate Soccer, Charlotte June Bargar Jan 2004

Incidence Of Skin Trauma Associated With Participation In Intercollegiate Soccer, Charlotte June Bargar

All Volumes (2001-2008)

Participation in soccer at the intercollegiate level has increased dramatically in the United States over the past 20 years. Past studies have identified the frequency and mechanisms of musculoskeletal injury among various populations. However, data on the incidence and etiology of skin trauma associated with intercollegiate athletic participation is limited in the literature. The purpose of this study was to measure the frequency of skin trauma and determine the injury rate (IR) based on exposure to injury among male and female soccer student-athletes at a NCAA Division II institution. A case reporting and exposure form was used to collect the …

Magnetite: Raman Study Of The High-Pressure And Low-Temperature Effects, Daniel Arenas Jan 2004

Magnetite: Raman Study Of The High-Pressure And Low-Temperature Effects, Daniel Arenas

All Volumes (2001-2008)

We report the results of a low-temperature (300K-15K) high-pressure (up to 22GPa) Raman study of the Verwey transition in magnetite (Fe3O4). We use additional Raman modes observed below the Verwey transition to determine how the transition temperature changes with the quasihydrostatic pressure. Increase of the pressure results in the linear decrease of the Verwey transition temperature, with no discontinuity. The corresponding pressure coefficient dTV/dP is found to be -5.16±1.19 K/GPa. Such a decrease is substantially larger than the one predicted by the mean-field Coulomb interaction model of the transition.

Southern Sudanese Women In The Diaspora, Stanislava Benesova Jan 2004

Southern Sudanese Women In The Diaspora, Stanislava Benesova

All Volumes (2001-2008)

This paper focuses on the ways in which southern Sudanese women in the African Diaspora are undergoing certain transformations of their gender roles as mothers, daughters, and wives. People’s identities in the diaspora can be regarded as a constant process of negotiation between the traditions of their homeland and the traditions of the host society. This paper investigates the relationship between ideologies of male domination and Sudanese women’s actual status in the family and society.
Indeed, immigrants’ identity is affected by the host society’s gender roles. This paper also provides an analysis of the role and importance of Christianity in …

The Effects Of A 10-Minute Warm-Up On Postural Control In Subjects With Functional Ankle Instability, Kristin Dawn Cadogan Jan 2004

The Effects Of A 10-Minute Warm-Up On Postural Control In Subjects With Functional Ankle Instability, Kristin Dawn Cadogan

All Volumes (2001-2008)

Very little research has assessed the effect of warm-up on postural control. The only related literature found pertained to rigorous activity and sensory processes. This type of activity increases the rate of reaction to perturbations of muscle length.14 Also, an increase in core temperature caused by activity influences the velocity of muscle shortening.15 Warming up prior to activity is a universally accepted method to prevent injuries. 16 Intense activity increases the rate of reaction to perturbations of muscle length and influences kinesthetic sensation. This raises the question if this neuromuscular effect can be replicated by measuring postural sway after a …

Offering Buddha A Coke, Alice Fletcher Jan 2004

Offering Buddha A Coke, Alice Fletcher

All Volumes (2001-2008)

Through my own life experiences and also through observing those of others, I have become sensitive to the conflicts and transformations that occur when widely dissimilar cultures come into contact. Recently I have observed how the owners of Tom Ka Thai Restaurant*, where I have been working for about a year, have carved out a place for themselves -- a place to negotiate new identities and meanings, within the dominant, northeast Florida culture that surrounds them.

Discussing The Allegedly Democratic Nature Of Judicial Review, Eddie Sarnowski Jan 2004

Discussing The Allegedly Democratic Nature Of Judicial Review, Eddie Sarnowski

All Volumes (2001-2008)

Defined as the function of the court to interpret and apply the constitution to particular circumstances and legal issues, judicial review has become a noteworthy expression of the power of the judiciary. Nearly 200 years old, this seemingly simple doctrine has instigated a substantial amount of political controversy and debate from which three individuals should be recognized for their contributions. Ronald Dworkin, a proponent of judicial activism, believes in “leaving issues to the court’s judgment” and investing our faith in their decisions (Dworkin 526). Supporting Dworkin, John Arthur asserts that judicial review promotes democracy, and more importantly, imposes safeguards against …

Censured Mystics: Expression And Accusation In Sixteenth Century Spain, Allison Ralph Jan 2004

Censured Mystics: Expression And Accusation In Sixteenth Century Spain, Allison Ralph

All Volumes (2001-2008)

In sixteenth-century Spain, women were among the individuals in society with the most limits placed on their behavior, and with the least ability to practice self-determination.
Since social and religious norms are interrelated and influence each other, their twin ladders of social mobility are also related. Some courageous women created for themselves upward social mobility by using the separate hierarchy of religious devotion. Since ecstatic religious experience and special access to the holy were regarded as a gift from God, this religious hierarchy could be described as level of access to the holy and was less defined and more fluid …

Analysis Of Papilloma Virus E1 Protein: Creation Of Stable Cell Lines To Generate Sufficient Amounts Of Viral E1, Peaches Marie Raval Orallo Jan 2004

Analysis Of Papilloma Virus E1 Protein: Creation Of Stable Cell Lines To Generate Sufficient Amounts Of Viral E1, Peaches Marie Raval Orallo

All Volumes (2001-2008)

The immediate objective of our research aims to create stable cell lines to generate sufficient amounts of viral E1. The pMSG vector was chosen for its ability to amplify gene expression by way of hormonal or chemical induction, and for its ability to be selected under ampicillin medium by way of the Amp gene. pMSG was ligated with E1 insert in two fashions, blunt or modified ends. Inserts were created by way of digesting them with BamH1. The inserts were blunted and ligated with a blunt ended pMSG, or blunted, modified, digested with Sal 1 and then ligated with Sal …

The ‘Feminization Of Poverty’ In Developing Countries And The Role Of Microfinance In Poverty Reduction, Serah Makka Jan 2004

The ‘Feminization Of Poverty’ In Developing Countries And The Role Of Microfinance In Poverty Reduction, Serah Makka

All Volumes (2001-2008)

This article is by no means a comprehensive analysis of the differences in the economic roles and impacts of men and women in different societies. It serves as a brief overview of the place of women in the economies of the developing world. Without question, women have an active economic role in developing economies. However, the more pressing question is the extent of the role of women, not just as mothers or caretakers of the future, but also as the keys to economic resurgence. This article examines the economic costs of gender discrimination to societies, especially to the economies of …

Berkeley’S Idealist Theory Of Knowledge And Whether Or Not Empiricism Can Lead To Idealism, Stacey Macpherson Jan 2004

Berkeley’S Idealist Theory Of Knowledge And Whether Or Not Empiricism Can Lead To Idealism, Stacey Macpherson

All Volumes (2001-2008)

George Berkeley is perhaps one of the most unique and intriguing figures in the history of modern philosophy. Dissatisfied with and angered by the materialist philosophies of his contemporaries, especially the ideas of John Locke,
Berkeley called for a return to "common sense." But "common sense," for Berkeley, involved not just a skeptical view of materialism, but the assertion that the material world does not exist at all! Berkeley utilizes persuasive logical arguments and empiricist principles in order to refute the existence of matter. However, when he attempts to account for what does exist, he makes a startling claim which …

Artist Study: The Compositional Style Of Jazz Guitarist Nathen Page, Stephen Lesche Jan 2004

Artist Study: The Compositional Style Of Jazz Guitarist Nathen Page, Stephen Lesche

All Volumes (2001-2008)

For this project, I have composed three and arranged two compositions for jazz quartet in the style of Page. The featured instrumentation will be guitar, piano, drums, and bass, which is the same instrumentation that Page had used almost exclusively since he first formed his own group. In preparation for writing my compositions and arrangements, I first had to learn Page’s compositions and arrangements by transcribing them from his recordings. In presenting my compositions/arrangements, I will first present the Page composition that my work will be derived from, along with a short written explanation of the song. Then I will …

The Ghana Small Business Development Project, Jeremiah R. Jones Jan 2004

The Ghana Small Business Development Project, Jeremiah R. Jones

All Volumes (2001-2008)

The Honors Program at the University of North Florida has established a bi-annual study abroad trip to Ghana, West Africa. The trip offers students the opportunity to gain an integrated perspective of the world outside the United States and other Western cultures. As a part of the May 2003 trip, several development projects were undertaken in cities throughout Ghana. The aim of the projects was both to contribute to the participating communities and to offer UNFstudents an opportunity in which they could apply the knowledge and skills learned in the classroom to real life experiences. In addition to community health …

Environmentalism And Zen Buddhism, Shari Jaymes Jan 2004

Environmentalism And Zen Buddhism, Shari Jaymes

All Volumes (2001-2008)

It seems as though Buddhism, and further Zen Buddhism, may offer ecology or environmentalism or conservationism (or any other “ism” in relation to the preservation of the natural world) a new perspective upon the problem of implementing a “land ethic.” There are many reasons to believe this, as the following work will show. I hope to determine whether or not Zen can be considered an ecological discipline.
Does it make a contribution (negative or positive) to a land ethic? And further, what does Zen think of the conservation movement? What does environmentalism think of Zen?

The Folly Of Uniformity? Lessons From The Restatement Movement, Kristen David Adams Jan 2004

The Folly Of Uniformity? Lessons From The Restatement Movement, Kristen David Adams

Hofstra Law Review

This article examines the unique application of the Restatements as de facto common law in the Virgin Islands. Applying an evolutionary biology metaphor, the article examines the way in which this decision by the Virgin Islands Senate may have made a substantive difference in the common law as it developed in the Virgin Islands. Part of the point of this article is that the Senate's decision may have implications that reach beyond the Virgin Islands. The purpose of this article is to provide some guidance to judges so that they may act more purposefully in choosing to follow the Restatements, …

Harnessing The Treaty Power In Support Of Environmental Regulation Of Activities That Don't "Substantially Affect Interstate Commerce", Katrina Fischer Kuh Jan 2004

Harnessing The Treaty Power In Support Of Environmental Regulation Of Activities That Don't "Substantially Affect Interstate Commerce", Katrina Fischer Kuh

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

This Article proposes a framework for applying the treaty power that would accomplish the goal of environmental regulation. This framework would be applied where the President has signed, and Congress has ratified, a treaty and Congress has enacted domestic legislation in some way satisfying the goals or requirements of the treaty. Under this framework, the inquiry into whether the treaty power could appropriately be used by Congress in excess of its Article I, Commerce Clause powers would be indexed to the strength of (1) the contract-like nexus between the necessarily reciprocal requirements and the goals of the treaty and the …

Attitudes Of Preventive Care Specialists And Registered Dietitians Toward Their Obese Patients, Maryanna Gabriel Jan 2004

Attitudes Of Preventive Care Specialists And Registered Dietitians Toward Their Obese Patients, Maryanna Gabriel

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this study was to compare preventive care specialists and registered dietitians regarding attitudes toward obese patients, to compare both groups with Canadian and American nurses previously studied, and to determine whether relationships exist between personal characteristics and attitudes toward obese patients. Questionnaires were sent to members of the American Preventive Care Association and 1,000 randomly selected members of the California Dietetic Association. Sixty-seven preventive care specialists and 579 registered dietitians participated in the study. A modified version of the Attitudes Toward Obesity scale, developed by Bagley, et al. was used to measure attitudes. Preventive care specialists and …
