Complex Multiplication Of Exactly Solvable Calabi-Yau Varieties, Monika Lynker, Rolf Schimmrigk, Steven Stewart Nov 2004

Complex Multiplication Of Exactly Solvable Calabi-Yau Varieties, Monika Lynker, Rolf Schimmrigk, Steven Stewart

Faculty Articles

We propose a conceptual framework that leads to an abstract characterization for the exact solvability of Calabi–Yau varieties in terms of abelian varieties with complex multiplication. The abelian manifolds are derived from the cohomology of the Calabi–Yau manifold, and the conformal field theoretic quantities of the underlying string emerge from the number theoretic structure induced on the varieties by the complex multiplication symmetry. The geometric structure that provides a conceptual interpretation of the relation between geometry and conformal field theory is discrete, and turns out to be given by the torsion points on the abelian varieties.

Insurgency And Counterinsurgency In The 21st Century: Reconceputalizing Threat And Response, Steven Metz Dr., Raymond A. Millen Ltc Nov 2004

Insurgency And Counterinsurgency In The 21st Century: Reconceputalizing Threat And Response, Steven Metz Dr., Raymond A. Millen Ltc

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

Modern insurgency warfare presents fresh challenges for the United States, which must re-conceptualize its approach to fighting such conflicts. Because the dominant characteristics of insurgency--protractedness and ambiguity--effectively stymie the American military's approach to war, the United States needs to reorient its strategic thinking. The key to success is not for the U.S. military to become better at counterinsurgency, but for the U.S. military (and other elements of the government) to be skilled at helping local security and intelligence forces become effective at it. Adapting tactics and strategies to the realities on the ground is the not only pragmatic, but also …

Shadows Of Things Past And Images Of The Future: Lessons For The Insurgencies In Our Midst, Max G. Manwaring Dr. Nov 2004

Shadows Of Things Past And Images Of The Future: Lessons For The Insurgencies In Our Midst, Max G. Manwaring Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

This monograph begins with a short discussion of contemporary insurgency. It makes the argument that, in studying terror war, guerrilla war, or any other common term for insurgency war, we find these expressions mischaracterize the activities of armed groups that are attempting to gain political control of a nation-state. The fact is that these organizations are engaged in a highly complex political-psychological war. Three key harbinger cases from which the first contemporary lessons of modern insurgency should have been learned provide the basis for the argument--Peru (1962 to date), Italy (1968-82), and Argentina (1969-79). Given that these kinds of conflict--or …

Measurements Of Fitness And Competition In Commensal Escherichia Coli And E. Coli O157:H7 Strains, Lisa M. Durso, David R. Smith, Robert W. Hutkins Nov 2004

Measurements Of Fitness And Competition In Commensal Escherichia Coli And E. Coli O157:H7 Strains, Lisa M. Durso, David R. Smith, Robert W. Hutkins

Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications

Although the main reservoirs for pathogenic Escherichia coli O157:H7 are cattle and the cattle environment, factors that affect its tenure in the bovine host and its survival outside humans and cattle have not been well studied. It is also not understood what physiological properties, if any, distinguish these pathogens from commensal counterparts that live as normal members of the human and bovine gastrointestinal tracts. To address these questions, individual and competitive fitness experiments, indirect antagonism assays, and antibiotic resistance and carbon utilization analyses were conducted using a strain set consisting of 122 commensal and pathogenic strains. The individual fitness experiments, …

Edge-Cracked Orthotropic Bimaterial Butt Joint Under Antiplane Singularity, Xiangfa Wu, Yuris A. Dzenis, Emrah Gokdag

Department of Engineering Mechanics: Faculty Publications

Explicit elastic solutions are given for an edge-cracked orthotropic bimaterial butt joint under antiplane singularity of a screw dislocation and a line-force. During the procedure, conformal mapping and known dislocation solution are utilized for constructing the fundamental solution to the present problem. Stress intensity factor (SIF) and energy release rate (ERR) of the edge-cracked butt joint are given in closed-form. In limiting cases, results provided in this work cover those in literature.

Smith, Rodney A. Moxley, Michael E. Olson, Paul D. Fey, Andrew K. Benson

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

Non-sorbitol-fermenting, β-glucuronidase-negative Escherichia coli O157:H7 strains are regarded as a clone complex, and populations from different geographical locations are believed to share a recent common ancestor. Despite their relatedness, high-resolution genotyping methods can detect significant genome variation among different populations. Phylogenetic analysis of high-resolution genotyping data from these strains has shown that subpopulations from geographically unlinked continents can be divided into two primary phylogenetic lineages, termed lineage I and lineage II, and limited studies of the distribution of these lineages suggest there could be differences in their propensity to cause disease in humans or to be transmitted to humans. Because …

Exergy Use In Bioenergetics, Yaşar Demirel Nov 2004

Exergy Use In Bioenergetics, Yaşar Demirel

Papers in Analytical Chemistry

Every developed and adapted biological system extracts useful energy from outside, converts, stores it, and uses for muscular contraction, substrate transport, protein synthesis, and other energy utilizing processes. This energy management in a living cell is called the bioenergetics, and the useful energy is the exergy, which is destroyed in every irreversible process because of the entropy production. The converted exergy is the adenosine triphosphate (ATP) produced through the oxidative phosphorylation coupled to respiration in which the exergy originates from oxidation of reducing equivalents of nutrients. A living cell uses the ATP for all the energy demanding activities; it has …

Modeling The Tertiary Structure Of A Maize (Zea Mays Ssp. Mays) Non-Symbiotic Hemoglobin, Juán Sáenz-Rivera, Gautam Sarath, Raul Peter-Arredondo Nov 2004

Modeling The Tertiary Structure Of A Maize (Zea Mays Ssp. Mays) Non-Symbiotic Hemoglobin, Juán Sáenz-Rivera, Gautam Sarath, Raul Peter-Arredondo

Gautam Sarath Publications

The tertiary structure of a maize (Zea mays ssp. mays) non-symbiotic hemoglobin (Hbm) was modeled using computer tools and the known tertiary structure of rice Hb1 as a template. This method was tested by predicting the tertiary structure of soybean leghemoglobin a (Lba) using rice Hb1 as a template. The tertiary structures of the predicted and native Lba were similar, indicating that our computer methods could reliably predict the tertiary structures of plant Hbs. We next predicted the tertiary structure of Hbm. Hbm appears to have a long pre-helixA and a large CD-loop. The positions of the distal …

Estimation Of Genetically Effective Breeding Numbers Using A Rejection Algorithm Approach, Uma Ramakrishnan, Jay F. Storz, Barbara L. Taylor, Russell Lande Nov 2004

Estimation Of Genetically Effective Breeding Numbers Using A Rejection Algorithm Approach, Uma Ramakrishnan, Jay F. Storz, Barbara L. Taylor, Russell Lande

Jay F. Storz Publications

Polygynous mating results in nonrandom sampling of the adult male gamete pool in each generation, thereby increasing the rate of genetic drift. In principle, genetic paternity analysis can be used to infer the effective number of breeding males (Nebm). However, this requires genetic data from an exhaustive sample of candidate males. Here we describe a new approach to estimate Nebm using a rejection algorithm in association with three statistics: Euclidean distance between the frequency distributions of maternally and paternally inherited alleles, average number of paternally inherited alleles and average gene diversity of paternally inherited alleles. We quantify …

Role Of Tuberculosis Laboratories In Saudi Arabia. A Call To Implement Standardized Procedures, Sahal A. Al-Hajoj, Fahad A. Alrabiah Nov 2004

Role Of Tuberculosis Laboratories In Saudi Arabia. A Call To Implement Standardized Procedures, Sahal A. Al-Hajoj, Fahad A. Alrabiah

Saudi Medical Journal

There is no doubt that the laboratory is the backbone for the diagnosis of tuberculosis (TB). Only through testing in the laboratory can the physician confirm suspicion of TB despite any previous clinical and x-ray findings. Recent visits to several laboratories in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia showed that some need considerable improvement. Unless there are standardized procedures to diagnose TB, and safety measures are implemented in all laboratories, it will be impossible to diagnose accurately and control TB. The laboratories should be redesigned to conform to international TB Diagnostic Centers, with well trained staff and proper safety procedures.

Towards Evidence-Based Clinical Practice Guidelines In Saudi Arabia, Lubna A. Al-Ansary, Abdulla Alkhenizan

Saudi Medical Journal

The objective of this review is to provide a brief background on clinical practice guidelines CPGs and tools to assess and locally adapt CPGs. Over the last 2 decades, CPGs have become an increasingly popular tool for synthesis of clinical information, so as to change clinical practice and improve quality of health care. Such a quantitative growth in the number of guidelines available in different specialties is a source of concern since there is evidence that recommendations produced by different groups can be conflicting, invalid, unreliable, and even harmful. Various critical appraisal instruments were designed and tested to assess whether …

Plasma Concentrations Of Non-Esterified Fatty Acids In Chronic Renal Failure In The United Arab Emirates, Michael P. Gillett, Enyioma N. Obineche, Safina T. Khan, Abdishakur M. Abdulle

Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: In end-stage renal failure, dyslipoproteinemia is linked to risk of cardiovascular disease. Increased concentrations of triacylglycerol-rich, very low density lipoproteins (VLDL) and decreased concentrations of high density lipoproteins (HDL) are usual, whilst total cholesterol and low density lipoprotein (LDL) concentrations are not increased. Non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) are not transported by lipoproteins, but increased concentrations may also be associated with cardiovascular disease risk. In this study, plasma concentrations of NEFA and other lipids were compared in healthy subjects and patients with end-stage chronic renal failure who were either undialyzed or undergoing peritoneal dialysis or hemodialysis. METHODS: Fasted blood samples …
