Mechanisms Of Reduced Luteal Sensitivity To Pgf2alpha In Ruminants., Beth A. Costine Jan 2004

Mechanisms Of Reduced Luteal Sensitivity To Pgf2alpha In Ruminants., Beth A. Costine

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The corpus luteum (CL) of ruminants exhibits periods of reduced sensitivity to the luteolysin prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α). The CL has reduced sensitivity to PGF2α early in the luteal phase. Mechanisms of reduced luteal sensitivity to PGF2α during the early portion of the luteal phase have been widely studied, with a focus on regulation of cyclooxygenase-2 and components of the endothelin system. The first ovulation in postpartum cows results in a CL that regresses during transition from a period of reduced sensitivity to susceptibility to PGF2α, and there is evidence that the first CL in the postpartum cow is more sensitive …

The Influence Of Organizational Structure On The Degree Of Adherence To The Principles Of A Learning Oriented Student Affairs Division., Debralee Mcclellan Jan 2004

The Influence Of Organizational Structure On The Degree Of Adherence To The Principles Of A Learning Oriented Student Affairs Division., Debralee Mcclellan

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

National calls for reform in higher education have focused on increased accountability for student learning. The historical division of responsibility and expertise between academic affairs and student affairs has resulted in an academic-social divide, contributing to an estrangement of student affairs from higher education's central mission of student learning. Recognizing this gap, the student affairs profession has articulated characteristics and principles of student affairs practice that contribute to student learning. Many community colleges have sought a solution to the academic—social divide by orchestrating an organizational restructuring which results in the consolidation of responsibility for both academic and student affairs. To …

The Use Of Assessment Data In Academic Strategic Planning., Susan L. Aloi Jan 2004

The Use Of Assessment Data In Academic Strategic Planning., Susan L. Aloi

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study was based on the philosophical premise that the mission of an institution of higher education should be focused on student-learning outcomes, and all strategic decisions need to be made in accordance with what has been proven to enhance student learning. Because the assessment process results in data that can determine what conditions positively affect student learning, these data should be used to make the strategic decisions that affect the core student-learning mission of the institution. The intent of this research project was to cull best practices in integrating assessment with planning from institutions that have productive planning and …

Employee Investment Decisions About Company Stock, James J. Choi, David Laibson, Brigitte C. Madrian, Andrew Metrick Jan 2004

Employee Investment Decisions About Company Stock, James J. Choi, David Laibson, Brigitte C. Madrian, Andrew Metrick

Faculty Publications

Recent high-profile cases have illustrated the dangers of employee investment in company stock. These debacles are unlikely to be the last ones, or even the most severe. Companies with more than 50 percent of retirement assets in company stock are common, and fractions over 80 percent continue to prevail at such large companies as Procter & Gamble, Anheuser- Busch, and Pfizer.1

The concentration of retirement wealth in company stock is a clear violation of diversification principles. Recently, several studies have quantified the economic costs of this concentration. Muelbroek (2002) uses a Sharperatio approach and finds that the average diversification …

Health Insurance, Labor Supply, And Job Mobility: A Critical Review Of The Literature, Jonathan Gruber, Brigitte C. Madrian Jan 2004

Health Insurance, Labor Supply, And Job Mobility: A Critical Review Of The Literature, Jonathan Gruber, Brigitte C. Madrian

Faculty Publications

This paper provides a critical review of the empirical literature on the relationship between health insurance, labor supply, and job mobility. We review over 50 papers on this topic, almost exclusively written in the last 10 years. We reach five conclusions. First, there is clear and unambiguous evidence that health insurance is a central determinant of retirement decisions. Second, there is fairly clear evidence that health insurance is not a major determinant of the labor supply and welfare exit decisions of low income mothers. Third, there is fairly compelling evidence that health insurance is an important factor in the labor …

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the oral health practices and perceptions of oral health care among cognitively intact nursing home residents. The instruments utilized were a resident interview and an oral health care evaluation. All participants (n = 10) completed the assessments. …

An Efficient Method For Texture-Based Image Retrieval., Umasankar Kandaswamy Jan 2004

An Efficient Method For Texture-Based Image Retrieval., Umasankar Kandaswamy

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The extraction of significant features from an image is a primary process in content-based analysis of image data. It is also a computationally intensive process. Using an appropriate approximation of the original image with effective signal processing can decrease the computational cost of the feature extraction process by orders of magnitude. This thesis shows that a pertinent approximation for texture images when used with a proposed distance measure can lead to a significant reduction in the cost of texture image analysis without introducing any significant error in the retrieval performance. An evaluation of the hypothesis is conducted in two popular …

Baselining A Compressed Air System: An Expert Systems Approach., Arul Prasad Senniappan Jan 2004

Baselining A Compressed Air System: An Expert Systems Approach., Arul Prasad Senniappan

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The depletion of fossils fuels, the unstable supply of these fuels, and the phenomenal increase in energy costs emphasize the need to conserve energy. Compressed air systems are major energy consuming systems in most of industries and are known to be the most inefficient. The baselining of such systems assumes importance in energy conservation because of this. As a result, the baseline of such systems stresses the importance of energy conservation. When designing a new facility and operating an existing one, eliminating inefficiencies such as inappropriate uses, excessive system pressure, leaks and other wastages leads to energy conservation. This research …

Study Of Surface Regeneration: Characteristics Of A Candle Filter At High Temperature., Balakrishnan Viswanathan Jan 2004

Study Of Surface Regeneration: Characteristics Of A Candle Filter At High Temperature., Balakrishnan Viswanathan

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

A hot gas particulate filtration system requires effective removal of particles to protect the downstream equipments. The leading technology for particle removal is the ceramic barrier filter technology. The ceramic candle filters are most promising to survive at temperatures up to 1600◦ F. At these high temperatures, there are certain problems that have to be dealt with candle filters. During the filtration process, with time, there is an accumulation of an ash cake on the outer surface of the filter. This causes the pressure drop through the thickness of the filter wall to increase with time. A back pulse in …

Preventing The "Red Lake": United States National Security Policy In The Commonwealth Caribbean, 1962--1983., Amy R. Bradley Jan 2004

Preventing The "Red Lake": United States National Security Policy In The Commonwealth Caribbean, 1962--1983., Amy R. Bradley

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This thesis surveys the development of the Cold War U.S. national security policy in the Commonwealth Caribbean, beginning with Jamaica’s independence in 1962 through the 1983 American invasion of Grenada. The paper examines three areas deemed important to this security policy: communism, migration, and economics. The U.S. believed that the prevention of communism in the West Indies was the goal of this security policy, while the West Indies wanted solutions and aid for regional economic problems. Instead of creating a bilateral security policy to aid both sides, the U.S. dictated and controlled the policy to reflect its security needs, calling …

Energy Analysis, Diagnostics And Conservation In Semiconductor Manufacturing., Yogesh Mukesh Mardikar Jan 2004

Energy Analysis, Diagnostics And Conservation In Semiconductor Manufacturing., Yogesh Mukesh Mardikar

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Semiconductor industry accounts for 1.3% - 2% of the total US electricity consumption in the manufacturing sector. Energy in the form of electricity is required to operate the manufacturing process equipment, maintain the clean room conditions, and operate equipment such as Heating Ventilation and Air conditioning (HVAC) units, and Chillers. The process equipment accounts for 40% of the operating costs in a semiconductor fabrication unit [8]. Since a significant amount of energy is used by the manufacturing process, it becomes necessary to determine process parameters which govern energy. A computer based interactive model referred to as Semiconductor Energy Calculation Program …

Musical Influences Which Shaped The "Twelve Transcendental Studies" Op. 11 By Sergei Liapunov (1859-1924)., Andrew G. Banks

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The Twelve Transcendental Studies Op. 11 for solo piano by Russian composer Sergei Liapunov (1859 -“1924) were written between 1897 and 1905 as a deliberate attempt to finish the key cycle begun by Franz Liszt (1811 - 1886) in his twelve studies of the same title. Whereas Liszt composed his twelve transcendental studies in each of the flat keys, the Liapunov studies are written in the sharp keys, completing the circle of fifths. The central purpose of the paper is to examine the diverse musical influences which Liapunov incorporated into his composition of the Op. 11 set, and how they …

Estimating The Impact Of Occupational Fatal Injuries On The United States Gross Domestic Product., Elyce Anne Biddle Jan 2004

Estimating The Impact Of Occupational Fatal Injuries On The United States Gross Domestic Product., Elyce Anne Biddle

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Mankind has been concerned with the safety and well-being of workers for more than 2,000 years. Despite this concern, occupational injuries have claimed the lives of nearly 60,000 American workers from 1992-2001 as reported through the Bureau of Labor Statistics Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI) program. The traditional measures of the human loss used—frequency, rate, and severity—are not the only measures of the achievements of the occupational safety and health community. Nor are they the only means to direct efforts to reduce the number of occupational incidents. Economic loss is another perspective that provides a more complete and meaningful …
