Faith, Confidence And Health Care: Fostering Trust In Medicine Through Law, Robert Gatter Jan 2004

Faith, Confidence And Health Care: Fostering Trust In Medicine Through Law, Robert Gatter

All Faculty Scholarship

This Article responds to the work of Professor Mark A. Hall, who has written an accompanying essay in reply, published in the same issue of the Wake Forest Law Review.

This Article identifies an emerging medical trust movement and challenges its normative claim that, as a matter of policy, the law should be used to preserve, if not promote, trust in medicine. Key to this challenge is the fact that the emerging movement defines medical trust in emotional terms as a kind of faith that goes beyond rationally based confidence. First, because the movement defines medical trust as faith, it …

Electrospinning As A Processing Method For Electroactive Polymers And Composites, Kristin Joy Pawlowski Jan 2004

Electrospinning As A Processing Method For Electroactive Polymers And Composites, Kristin Joy Pawlowski

Theses and Dissertations

Electrospinning was examined for its potential to create functional materials. Three distinct electroactive materials were electrospun into fibers and fiber mats and then characterized with the intent of determining their utility in aerospace and biomedical applications such as micro-air vehicles and the cardiovascular system. Electrospun Graft Elastomers demonstrated potential as actuators, as electromechanical strain testing showed comparable response to the film form of this material. Further improvement of electroactive response was realized with high dielectric inclusions and fiber orientation. Electrospin processing imparted piezoelectric properties to the fibers of poly(vinylidene fluoride). Differential scanning calorimetry and infrared spectroscopy indicated a degree of …

The History Of The World, Ruby Wescoat Jan 2004

The History Of The World, Ruby Wescoat

Theses and Dissertations

This Thesis is my effort to understand what subjects I find interesting and why. In the processes of writing and making sculpture, I discovered that my underlying fascination is in history. I am interested in places and objects for their individual qualities, but I also want to know how they relate to the world. If I am drawn to an ancient place or object, I want to examine how it fits into the contemporary world, and visa versa. The complexity of these relationships is increased by the vast number of histories (or stories) that are intertwined in the world. Over …

Experimental Studies On Nucleation, Nanoparticle's Formation And Polymerization From The Vapor Phase, Victor Maher Abdelsayed Jan 2004

Experimental Studies On Nucleation, Nanoparticle's Formation And Polymerization From The Vapor Phase, Victor Maher Abdelsayed

Theses and Dissertations

This research is divided into three major parts. In part I, the critical supersaturations required for the homogeneous nucleation of 2,2,2-trifluorothanol (TFE) vapor have been measured over a temperature range (266-296 K) using an upward thermal diffusion cloud chamber (DCC). The measured supersaturations are in agreement with the predictions of both the classical and the scaled theory of nucleation. Moreover, the condensation of supersaturated TFE vapor on laser-vaporized magnesium nanoparticles has been studied under different experimental conditions, such as the supersaturation, the pressure and the electric field. In part II, the laser vaporization controlled condensation (LVCC) technique was used to …

The Effects Of The Handwriting Without Tears Program On The Handwriting Of Students In Inclusion Classrooms, Lisa Owens Jan 2004

The Effects Of The Handwriting Without Tears Program On The Handwriting Of Students In Inclusion Classrooms, Lisa Owens

Theses and Dissertations

Many handwriting programs are currently used in schools, but little research has been conducted on their effectiveness. A quasi-experimental non-equivalent comparison group pretest posttest design examined effects of the Handwriting Without Tears program with special and general education students enrolled in inclusion classrooms. Two experimental classes received instruction with the HWT method while two comparison classes received instruction using traditional methods. Handwriting performance was measured using the Minnesota Handwriting Assessment. One-way analysis of covariance tested the differences between rates of handwriting improvement for experimental and comparison groups while controlling for pretest scores. Students in the experimental classes showed no statistically …

Nitric Oxide Inhibition Of Adenylyl Cyclase Type 6 Activity Is Dependent Upon Lipid Rafts And Caveolin Signaling Complexes, Rennolds S. Ostrom, Richard A. Bundey, Paul A. Insel Jan 2004

Nitric Oxide Inhibition Of Adenylyl Cyclase Type 6 Activity Is Dependent Upon Lipid Rafts And Caveolin Signaling Complexes, Rennolds S. Ostrom, Richard A. Bundey, Paul A. Insel

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Several cell types, including cardiac myocytes and vascular endothelial cells, produce nitric oxide (NO) via both constitutive and inducible isoforms of NO synthase. NO attenuates cardiac contractility and contributes to contractile dysfunction in heart failure, although the precise molecular mechanisms for these effects are poorly defined. Adenylyl cyclase (AC) isoforms type 5 and 6, which are preferentially expressed in cardiac myocytes, may be inhibited via a direct nitrosylation by NO. Because endothelial NO synthase (eNOS and NOS3), β-adrenergic ( AR) receptors, and AC6 all can localize in lipid raft/caveolin-rich microdomains, we sought to understand the role of lipid rafts in …

Modeling The Hydrogeochemistry Of Denitrification In The Elk Valley Aquifer, Paul A. Skubinna Jan 2004

Modeling The Hydrogeochemistry Of Denitrification In The Elk Valley Aquifer, Paul A. Skubinna

Theses and Dissertations

Nitrate (NO₃¯) in groundwater has become an important tissue in the last few decades. It is known to cause methemoglobinemia, commonly known as “blue baby syndrome,” and is suspected of being a carcinogen. The most common sources for dissolved NO₃¯ in shallow groundwater include excessive application of nitrogenous fertilizers, misuse of septic systems, improper disposal of domestic wastewater or sludge, and livestock waste.

Denitrification is the most effective sink for NO₃¯. The Elk Valley aquifer (EVA) of eastern North Dakota is known to support denitrification. The objective of this study was to gain a better understanding of the geochemical processes …

Algebraic Semantics For Coalgebraic Logics, Clemens Kupke, Alexander Kurz, Dirk Pattinson Jan 2004

Algebraic Semantics For Coalgebraic Logics, Clemens Kupke, Alexander Kurz, Dirk Pattinson

Engineering Faculty Articles and Research

With coalgebras usually being defined in terms of an endofunctor T on sets, this paper shows that modal logics for T-coalgebras can be naturally described as functors L on boolean algebras. Building on this idea, we study soundness, completeness and expressiveness of coalgebraic logics from the perspective of duality theory. That is, given a logic L for coalgebras of an endofunctor T, we construct an endofunctor L such that L-algebras provide a sound and complete (algebraic) semantics of the logic. We show that if L is dual to T, then soundness and completeness of the algebraic semantics immediately yield the …

Coalgebras And Modal Expansions Of Logics, Alexander Kurz, Alessandra Palmigiano Jan 2004

Coalgebras And Modal Expansions Of Logics, Alexander Kurz, Alessandra Palmigiano

Engineering Faculty Articles and Research

In this paper we construct a setting in which the question of when a logic supports a classical modal expansion can be made precise. Given a fully selfextensional logic S, we find sufficient conditions under which the Vietoris endofunctor V on S-referential algebras can be defined and we propose to define the modal expansions of S as the logic that arises from the V-coalgebras. As an example, we also show how the Vietoris endofunctor on referential algebras extends the Vietoris endofunctor on Stone spaces. From another point of view, we examine when a category of ‘spaces’ (X,A), ie sets X …

Surveying Cost Growth, Michael A. Greiner, Vince Sipple, Edward D. White Jan 2004

Surveying Cost Growth, Michael A. Greiner, Vince Sipple, Edward D. White

Faculty Publications

Cost growth that weapon systems incur throughout their acquisition life cycle concerns those who work in the acquisition environment. One way to reduce the amount of unexpected cost growth is to develop better cost estimates. In attaining better cost estimates though, it is often helpful to understand and account for potential cost drivers. Several cost studies, some of which specifically focus on the aircraft industry, have been performed documenting and investigating these growth factors. Overviews of these various cost growth studies are presented as other tools for the cost estimators and program managers.

Tax Treatment Of Charitable Contributions In Canada: Theory, Practice, And Reform, David G. Duff Jan 2004

Tax Treatment Of Charitable Contributions In Canada: Theory, Practice, And Reform, David G. Duff

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

Tax recognition for charitable contributions in Canada takes the form of a deduction where the contribution is made by a corporation or for the purpose of gaining or producing income from a business, a nonrefundable credit where individuals make qualifying gifts to eligible recipients, and a reduction or exemption from capital gains tax on gifts to eligible recipients of qualifying cultural property, publicly traded securities, or ecologically sensitive land. This article reviews different rationales for the tax recognition of charitable contributions, concluding that the most persuasive rationale is to indirectly subsidize the quasi-public goods and services that charities provide and …

Work, Sex, And Sex-Work: Competing Feminist Discourses On The International Sex Trade, Kate Sutherland Jan 2004

Work, Sex, And Sex-Work: Competing Feminist Discourses On The International Sex Trade, Kate Sutherland

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

This article explores the competing discourses of radical feminism and sex radicalism on the international sex trade. These voices have been dominant in feminist debates on this issue and both have proved significant forces when it comes to legal reform. Radical feminists characterize prostitution as an abuse of human rights, regardless of whether it is forced or voluntary, and have fought for its abolition. They have had a substantial impact on the development and adoption of anti-trafficking legislation and instruments in various countries and at the international level. Sex radicals have offered compelling opposition, shifting the focus from the abolition …

The Muddles Over Outsourcing, Jagdish N. Bhagwati, Arvind Panagariya, T.N. Srinivasan Jan 2004

The Muddles Over Outsourcing, Jagdish N. Bhagwati, Arvind Panagariya, T.N. Srinivasan

Faculty Scholarship

In the early 1980s, “outsourcing” typically referred to the situation when firms expanded their purchases of manufactured physical inputs, like car companies that purchased window cranks and seat fabrics from outside the firm rather than making them inside. But in 2004, outsourcing took on a different meaning. It referred now to a specific segment of the growing international trade in services. This segment consists of arm’s-length, or what Bhagwati (1984) called “long-distance,” purchase of services abroad, principally, but not necessarily, via electronic mediums such as the telephone, fax and the Internet. Outsourcing can happen both though transactions by firms, like …

Religion And The Rehnquist Court, Kent Greenawalt Jan 2004

Religion And The Rehnquist Court, Kent Greenawalt

Faculty Scholarship

This summary Article pays predominant attention to what the Rehnquist Court has altered. It slights a significant range of continuity. That includes the Court's strong rejection of laws that discriminate among religions or that target religious practices and the Court's inhospitable response to religious exercises that are sponsored by public schools. Although "continuity" may be a misleading term for subjects a court has not addressed, the Supreme Court has not touched the law regarding judicial involvement in church property disputes since Rehnquist became Chief Justice, and nothing it has decided presages an obvious shift in that jurisprudence.

Religion As Hatred: Antisemitism As A Case Study, John T. Pawlikowski Jan 2004

Religion As Hatred: Antisemitism As A Case Study, John T. Pawlikowski

Journal of Hate Studies

The topic of religion as a source of hatred could be explored through several lenses. I first came to this topic through an analysis and evaluation of the studies done on prejudice in Catholic teaching materials undertaken in the sociology department of St. Louis University. This evaluation of ways in which Catholic textbooks covering literature, social studies, and religion generated stereotypes of religious and racial outgroups opened my eyes to the ways in which religion could become a force for social hatred rather than reconciliation. This initial research has grounded my subsequent work both as a social ethicist and as …

Positioning Hate, Kathleen Blee Jan 2004

Positioning Hate, Kathleen Blee

Journal of Hate Studies

A year after the publication of my book on women in the contemporary organized racist movement,Inside Organized Racism: Women in the Hate Movement (2002), I received a series of emails from a woman I will call Jenny. The study of racist activists in this book was based in part on my interviews with women in the Ku Klux Klan, neo-Nazi and white supremacist skinhead groups, and Christian Identity communities. Although Jenny was not among those I had interviewed or even met in the course of the study, she had heard about my book–although not read it, as I later discovered–and …

The Last Uncomfortable "Religious" Question? Monotheistic Exclusivism And Textual Superiority In Judaism, Christianity, And Islam As Sources Of Hate And Genocide, Steven Leonard Jacobs Jan 2004

The Last Uncomfortable "Religious" Question? Monotheistic Exclusivism And Textual Superiority In Judaism, Christianity, And Islam As Sources Of Hate And Genocide, Steven Leonard Jacobs

Journal of Hate Studies

This paper is a preliminary examination of some of the texts of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam–Hebrew Bible, New Testament, Qur’an–that appear to affirm such exclusivism, and, at the same time, a reflection upon the meanings and implications of those texts coterminous with their historical realities.
