Surveying Cost Growth, Michael A. Greiner, Vince Sipple, Edward D. White Jan 2004

Surveying Cost Growth, Michael A. Greiner, Vince Sipple, Edward D. White

Faculty Publications

Cost growth that weapon systems incur throughout their acquisition life cycle concerns those who work in the acquisition environment. One way to reduce the amount of unexpected cost growth is to develop better cost estimates. In attaining better cost estimates though, it is often helpful to understand and account for potential cost drivers. Several cost studies, some of which specifically focus on the aircraft industry, have been performed documenting and investigating these growth factors. Overviews of these various cost growth studies are presented as other tools for the cost estimators and program managers.

Tax Treatment Of Charitable Contributions In Canada: Theory, Practice, And Reform, David G. Duff Jan 2004

Tax Treatment Of Charitable Contributions In Canada: Theory, Practice, And Reform, David G. Duff

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

Tax recognition for charitable contributions in Canada takes the form of a deduction where the contribution is made by a corporation or for the purpose of gaining or producing income from a business, a nonrefundable credit where individuals make qualifying gifts to eligible recipients, and a reduction or exemption from capital gains tax on gifts to eligible recipients of qualifying cultural property, publicly traded securities, or ecologically sensitive land. This article reviews different rationales for the tax recognition of charitable contributions, concluding that the most persuasive rationale is to indirectly subsidize the quasi-public goods and services that charities provide and …

Work, Sex, And Sex-Work: Competing Feminist Discourses On The International Sex Trade, Kate Sutherland Jan 2004

Work, Sex, And Sex-Work: Competing Feminist Discourses On The International Sex Trade, Kate Sutherland

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

This article explores the competing discourses of radical feminism and sex radicalism on the international sex trade. These voices have been dominant in feminist debates on this issue and both have proved significant forces when it comes to legal reform. Radical feminists characterize prostitution as an abuse of human rights, regardless of whether it is forced or voluntary, and have fought for its abolition. They have had a substantial impact on the development and adoption of anti-trafficking legislation and instruments in various countries and at the international level. Sex radicals have offered compelling opposition, shifting the focus from the abolition …

The Muddles Over Outsourcing, Jagdish N. Bhagwati, Arvind Panagariya, T.N. Srinivasan Jan 2004

The Muddles Over Outsourcing, Jagdish N. Bhagwati, Arvind Panagariya, T.N. Srinivasan

Faculty Scholarship

In the early 1980s, “outsourcing” typically referred to the situation when firms expanded their purchases of manufactured physical inputs, like car companies that purchased window cranks and seat fabrics from outside the firm rather than making them inside. But in 2004, outsourcing took on a different meaning. It referred now to a specific segment of the growing international trade in services. This segment consists of arm’s-length, or what Bhagwati (1984) called “long-distance,” purchase of services abroad, principally, but not necessarily, via electronic mediums such as the telephone, fax and the Internet. Outsourcing can happen both though transactions by firms, like …

Religion And The Rehnquist Court, Kent Greenawalt Jan 2004

Religion And The Rehnquist Court, Kent Greenawalt

Faculty Scholarship

This summary Article pays predominant attention to what the Rehnquist Court has altered. It slights a significant range of continuity. That includes the Court's strong rejection of laws that discriminate among religions or that target religious practices and the Court's inhospitable response to religious exercises that are sponsored by public schools. Although "continuity" may be a misleading term for subjects a court has not addressed, the Supreme Court has not touched the law regarding judicial involvement in church property disputes since Rehnquist became Chief Justice, and nothing it has decided presages an obvious shift in that jurisprudence.

Religion As Hatred: Antisemitism As A Case Study, John T. Pawlikowski Jan 2004

Religion As Hatred: Antisemitism As A Case Study, John T. Pawlikowski

Journal of Hate Studies

The topic of religion as a source of hatred could be explored through several lenses. I first came to this topic through an analysis and evaluation of the studies done on prejudice in Catholic teaching materials undertaken in the sociology department of St. Louis University. This evaluation of ways in which Catholic textbooks covering literature, social studies, and religion generated stereotypes of religious and racial outgroups opened my eyes to the ways in which religion could become a force for social hatred rather than reconciliation. This initial research has grounded my subsequent work both as a social ethicist and as …

Positioning Hate, Kathleen Blee Jan 2004

Positioning Hate, Kathleen Blee

Journal of Hate Studies

A year after the publication of my book on women in the contemporary organized racist movement,Inside Organized Racism: Women in the Hate Movement (2002), I received a series of emails from a woman I will call Jenny. The study of racist activists in this book was based in part on my interviews with women in the Ku Klux Klan, neo-Nazi and white supremacist skinhead groups, and Christian Identity communities. Although Jenny was not among those I had interviewed or even met in the course of the study, she had heard about my book–although not read it, as I later discovered–and …

The Last Uncomfortable "Religious" Question? Monotheistic Exclusivism And Textual Superiority In Judaism, Christianity, And Islam As Sources Of Hate And Genocide, Steven Leonard Jacobs

Journal of Hate Studies

This paper is a preliminary examination of some of the texts of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam–Hebrew Bible, New Testament, Qur’an–that appear to affirm such exclusivism, and, at the same time, a reflection upon the meanings and implications of those texts coterminous with their historical realities.

Finding Light In The Darkness? The Historical Treatment Of Genocide As A Template For The Field Of Hate Studies, Raymond C. Sun Jan 2004

Finding Light In The Darkness? The Historical Treatment Of Genocide As A Template For The Field Of Hate Studies, Raymond C. Sun

Journal of Hate Studies

I am discovering that to teach about the history of Nazism, the Holocaust, and genocide is to enter into a profoundly spiritual experience. By this I mean that in engaging with these subjects, students of history must come to terms with some of the most elemental, existential qualities of the human potential for radical destruction and limitless hatred. The topics force us into a direct confrontation with the concept of ultimate evil: its manifold attractions; its power to deceive and destroy both perpetrators and victims; and yet at the same time, appearing in the midst of the reign of death, …

Panel Three: Introduction, Suzanne B. Goldberg Jan 2004

Panel Three: Introduction, Suzanne B. Goldberg

Faculty Scholarship

I think some of my colleagues will ask questions about these cases, to ask who is a man or woman, but if the question is legally, what is male or female, and if you think about the questions that you've read, say, in common law out of the Supreme Court – and I'll just talk about discrimination cases, although I think you can talk about other ones, too – think about the sex discrimination cases. The struggle is about, what is discrimination, but the Court in Craig v. Born is talking about different control restrictions for men and women. Or …

Devotional Cccu Library Directors Meeting "Le'l' The Process Go On" I June 13,2003, Linda Poston

The Christian Librarian

We can all recite the saying "The Christian life isn't a bed of roses" - so why do we get so surprised or upset when difficult things happen to us? Why do we somehow feel we have to "have it all together" and never show any signs of need or weakness? I believe we have let the world squeeze us into its mold of "the good life" - free of pain and struggle, full of self-indulgence and the mind-set of avoiding pain and struggle at all costs.

New Frontiers In Collection Development Preparing To Meet New Standards, Gary R. Shook

The Christian Librarian

This article describes the general policies which may be included in a comprehensive collection development policy, attempting to follow national guidelines. It also describes one approach to analyzing how well the library collection supports the various parts of the curriculum, and presents a technique to compare a library collection with peer libraries by subject majors. Finally, the "Collection Development Plan" section provides a format for stating an action plan to develop the collection based upon all of the information gathered.

The Association's Board of Directors met in October in Cedarville, Ohio. It was a busy and productive time. We reviewed work that is in progress in the Association office to improve record-keeping and the ability to provide data needed for planning and marketing. A process was begun to periodically survey ACL members on their satisfaction with services and products. Service standards were drafted by which to measure performance of ACL staff, officers, teams, and individual appointees. The surveys will enable us to revise the standards to better reflect members' expectations.

The Pixel Frontier: Electronic Books Twenty-First Century In The Library, Lori Thornton

The Christian Librarian

The author examines the growing popularity and acceptance of e-books by taking a look at their availability, strengths and weaknesses, acceptance by users, and ways to introduce readers to the format. This was accomplished through a survey of the literature, observations of users, and an informal survey of students at Carson-Newman College.

Extent Of Service: Minnesota Libraries Disability Services And Quality Of Websites: Assessing Public & Academic Libraries, Mark Yannie

The Christian Librarian

This article addresses the availability of software/hardware and other sources for all persons with disabilities in Minnesota libraries, and also the navigability of websites of these libraries for those who are visually impaired. Many electronic resources are prohibitively difficult or impossible for the Blind to access. On a practical level, the article surveys and evaluates what is available and what works for people with disabilities at present.

I surveyed all Academic Libraries and Public Library Systems in Minnesota as to their disability services, and evaluated the accessibility of library websites through the help of people with visual disabilities. The websites …

Beyond The Book: Promoting Effective Research, Jana M. Borchardt

The Christian Librarian

In the past library professionals have primarily collected and provided access to materials; however, this paper will argue that we must now go beyond access or "Beyond the Book. " One way to do this is to learn about the information search process and then assume a new and more assertive role as a "research advisor. " We need to change our patrons 'expectations so that they see us as knowledgeable about sources, yes, but also as experts on effective research as a process of discovery. Three relevant information search process models are covered, as well as the way people …
