Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education
We live in an amazing Universe. W At this very moment, we sit on a spinning ball of rock eight thousand miles across. This oversized boulder, our planet Earth, revolves around a yellow star at over one thousand miles per hour. This star, our Sun, is just one of billions in a vast spiral island of suns we call the Milky Way galaxy. Our seemingly huge star island floats among billions of other similar realms in a Universe almost fourteen billion years old in both space and time.
Feeling overwhelmed? Perhaps even a bit small and lost in all that …

Most of my columns advise legal writers; this one also aims to change the perspective of a legal reader. The September 2004 column addressed some of the issues raised by a British best- seller on punctuation called Eats, Shoots & Leaves. The author, Lynne Truss, attempts to make a case for "sticklers" who "refuse to patronize any shop with checkouts for 'eight items or less'" or who have urges to "shin up ladders at dead of night with an apostrophe-shaped stencil and a tin of paint" to correct advertisements. To her, punctuation errors are "signs of ignorance and indifference."

Fungal Community Diversity And Composition On Logs In Relation To Log Size And Penetrability, November 2004, Janaki Patel
Fungal Community Diversity And Composition On Logs In Relation To Log Size And Penetrability, November 2004, Janaki Patel
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Very little is known about how macrofungal communities on logs vary depending on different log characteristics. This study tested whether macrofungal communities on logs in premontane wet secondary forest in Monteverde, Costa Rica, vary significantly with changes in log size and penetrability. Additionally, this study determined the regional species diversity and turnover of macrofungal communities on logs, and determined whether there were trends between groups of macrofungal species growing on logs of different degrees of penetrability. One hundred logs with macrofungi were sampled randomly and measured for size and penetrability. The fungi on each were recorded according to morphospecies. A …

Comparison Of Protist Communities In Native And Exotic Bromeliad Species, November 2004, Michelle L. Rhoney
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
In this experiment, I compared protist community and composition found in the tanks, or phytotelmata, of a native bromeliad species, Vriesea werckleana, and an unidentified exotic species. This study was conducted in Monteverde, Costa Rica, near the Estación Biológica Monteverde, between October 22 and November 11, 2004. Samples were taken from 20 individuals of each native and exotic species. The protist species composition and abundance were determined for each individual bromeliad. Local, regional, and metacommunity composition were evaluated and compared. Local (alpha) richness was the average of the protist communities, whereas regional (gamma) richness (or metacommunity) was the sum of …

Recent changes in the forest policies, regulations, and laws affecting public lands encourage postfire salvage logging, an activity that all too often delays or prevents recovery. In contrast, the 10 recommendations proposed here can improve the condition of watersheds and aquatic ecosystems.

Evaluating The Influence Of Massage On Leg Strength, Swelling, And Pain Following A Half-Marathon, Lance G. Dawson, Kimberley A. Dawson, Peter M. Tiidus
Kinesiology and Physical Education Faculty Publications
Massage therapy is commonly used following endurance running races with the expectation that it will enhance post-run recovery of muscle function and reduce soreness. A limited number of studies have reported little or no influence of massage therapy on post-exercise muscle recovery. However, no studies have been conducted in a field setting to assess the potential for massage to influence muscle recovery following an actual endurance running race. To evaluate the potential for repeated massage therapy interventions to influence recovery of quadriceps and hamstring muscle soreness, recovery of quadriceps and hamstring muscle strength and reduction of upper leg muscle swelling …

Understanding The Role Of Behavior And Cognitions In A Group Exercise Setting, Tina L. Shrigley, Kimberley A. Dawson
Kinesiology and Physical Education Faculty Publications
The first purpose of the present study examined whether individuals with different exercise behaviors (classified by attendance) experienced different or similar cognitive patterns. It was hypothesized that different behavior would lead to different cognitive appraisals. It was predicted that there would be a difference between the three behavioral frequency groups with regard to self-efficacy measures and goal measures. The second purpose of the study was to describe, evaluate and observe whether social factors were associated with participating in exercise in groups. It was hypothesized that those who engage in exercise classes would elicit a social focus. Participants for the study …

Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education
I wish I had a nickel for every environmental education activity that involves index cards. Students drown in a sea of paper. My kindergartener brings home worksheets, pictures, notes, every day. By the end of the year, the pile is as high as he is. Are you doing activities with pictures of animals cut out from magazines and laminated onto index cards? You know who you are. Forget the index cards! Use real stuff.

Content Validity Of The Interstate School Leaders Licensure Consortium's (Isllc) Standards For School Leaders: To What Extent Do Isllc Skill Indicators Describe School Leaders' Instructional Leadership Work?, Jane Clark Lindle, Nancy Stalion, Lu Young
Publications
Most validity studies of ISLLC standards and indicators rely heavily on focus groups and perceptual surveys. This study included self-report and observational data on principals’ use of time. A content analysis tested ISLLC’s descriptions of instructional leadership with a related set of Kentucky’s Standards and Indicators for School Improvement (SISI) as well as across the observational job analyses of two sets of principals: (a) five elementary and secondary principals in a typical rural district and (b) five matched for school characteristics from high performing schools on Kentucky’s assessment system. Results reinforce early studies revealing the intense and fragmented nature of …

The Red-Cockaded Woodpecker: Interactions With Fire, Snags, Fungi, Rat Snakes, And Pileated Woodpeckers, Richard N. Conner, Daniel Saenz, D. Craig Rudolph
Faculty Publications
Red-cockaded woodpecker (Picoides borealis) adaptation to fire-maintained southern pine ecosystems has involved several important interactions: (I) the reduction of hardwood frequency in the pine ecosystem because of frequent tires, (2) the softening of pine heartwood by red heart fungus (Phellinus pini) that hastens cavity excavation by the species, (3) the woodpecker's use of the pine's resin system to create abarrier against rat snakes (Elaphe sp.), and (4) the woodpecker as a keystone cavity excavator for secondary-cavity users. Historically, frequent, low-intensity ground tires in southern pine uplands reduced the availability of dead trees (snags) that are typically used by other …

Obstetrics & Gynaecology Publications
Heterotrimeric G protein alpha subunits, RGS proteins, and GoLoco motif proteins have been recently implicated in the control of mitotic spindle dynamics in C. elegans and D. melanogaster. Here we show that "regulator of G protein signaling-14" (RGS14) is expressed by the mouse embryonic genome immediately prior to the first mitosis, where it colocalizes with the anastral mitotic apparatus of the mouse zygote. Loss of Rgs14 expression in the mouse zygote results in cytofragmentation and failure to progress to the 2-cell stage. RGS14 is found in all tissues and segregates to the nucleus in interphase and to the mitotic spindle …
Interpreting Workplace Learning In Terms Of Discourse And Community Of Practice, Adrian K. Ho
Interpreting Workplace Learning In Terms Of Discourse And Community Of Practice, Adrian K. Ho
Western Libraries Publications
Based on the ethnographic data collected from the workplace of an academic library, I argue that workplace learning (WL) is a situated socio-cognitive process. It is expedited by knowledge management (KM), which is a collective effort to generate, share, and institutionalize work-related knowledge. KM is inherent in the face-to-face conversational interactions embedded in planned formal training, planned informal sharing, and spontaneous informal learning. When face-to-face interaction is not possible, KM is accomplished through textualization. It helps the members of the workplace acquire new work-related knowledge and integrate it to their common, contextualized knowledge base. The contents of the knowledge base …
