The Differential Relations Of Maternal And Paternal Support And Control To Adolescent Social Competence, Self-Worth, And Sympathy, Deborah J. Laible, Gustavo Carlo
The Differential Relations Of Maternal And Paternal Support And Control To Adolescent Social Competence, Self-Worth, And Sympathy, Deborah J. Laible, Gustavo Carlo
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
The goal of this study was to examine how the parenting dimensions of both mothers and fathers independently and together predict adolescent outcomes in three domains: sympathy, self-worth, and social competence. One-hundred eight adolescents completed self report measures on their perceived relationship with parents, sympathy, social competence, and self-worth. Perceived maternal support and rigid control were the most consistent predictors of adolescent adjustment. High levels of perceived maternal support and low levels of maternal rigid control were related to adolescents’ reports of sympathy, social competence, and self-worth. In contrast, support and control from fathers was generally unrelated to adolescent adjustment. …

Comparative Cost Analysis Of Crrt In Icu/Ccu Patients Undergoing Cardiovascular Surgery Vs. Other Procedures At A Texas Hospital, Tejaswi Belavadi, Alberto Coustasse, Douglas Mains, Antonio A. Rene
Management Faculty Research
The purpose of this study was to conduct a comparative analysis of hospital costs incurred by patients undergoing Cardiovascular Surgery (CVS) and patients undergoing other medical procedures who received Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT) in a teaching hospital. A total of 117 patients were identified through review of medical charts for the period of January 1999 to August 2002. Twenty one percent of them were identified having CVS. Eighty-eight percent of the CVS patients admitted to the ICU for CRRT died compared to 67% for non-CVS patients (p=0.047). Average actual costs of hospitalization were $47,225 for CVS patients and $51,724 …

Ethics, Physician Incentives And Managed Care, Alberto Coustasse, Douglas Mains, Kristine Lykens
Management Faculty Research
The authors review the principle features of the managed care system in an effort to understand the ethical assumptions inherent in managed care. The interrelationships among physician incentives, responsibilities of patients and the physician-patient relationship are examined in light of the ethical concerns identified in the managed care system. The managed care system creates ethical tensions for those who influence the allocation of scare resources.
Managed care’s administrative controls have increasingly changed the doctor-patient relationship to the business person-consumer relationship. Managed care goals of quality and access demand that physicians be both patient advocate and organizational advocate, even though these …
Impact Of The Social Construction Of Ld On Culturally Diverse Families: A Response To Reid And Valle, Maya Kalyanpur Phd, Elizabeth Harry Phd
Impact Of The Social Construction Of Ld On Culturally Diverse Families: A Response To Reid And Valle, Maya Kalyanpur Phd, Elizabeth Harry Phd
School of Leadership and Education Sciences: Faculty Scholarship
This response focuses on the effects of the current construction of learning disabilities (LD) on families of children from devalued racial/ethnic groups. Agreeing with the arguments of Reid and Valle, we add that parents from such groups are further disenfranchised because they are not participants in the critical discourse surrounding LD and because of the persistent belief that their parenting skills are deficient. We also suggest that the expectation of parental advocacy may be alien to parents whose cultures do not embrace an individualist perspective. Professionals can improve their responses to such parents by an understanding of the principle of …

Is Smaller Better? A Comment On "Comparative Economic Impact Analyses" By Michael Mondello And , Victor Matheson
Economics Department Working Papers
In a recent article in Economic Development Quarterly, "Comparative Economic Impact Analyses: Differences Across Cities, Events, and Demographics" (November 2004), Michael Mondello and Patrick Rishe examined the economic impact of small, amateur sporting events on host economies. This response to their work suggests four reasons why ex ante economic impact estimates for smaller sporting events may come closer to matching ex post reality than those for "mega-events" including less crowding out, lower hosting costs, higher multipliers, and less incentive for boosters to published inflated figures.

Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education
This issue of Taproot is dedicated to encouraging a reacquaintance with the evening sky. Our lead article by Joseph Flanagan describes efforts being made to "restore the night sky" to our national parks. In it Flanagan argues, "the night sky is a primal element of our human heritage ... " and " is the eternal backdrop to human history, inspiration of thought and belief, source of the deepest questions human beings have posed about themselves and their place in the world." Readers will be encouraged about the progress being made to protect this aspect of national parks.

The Night Sky, Joseph Flanagan
Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education
Losing the night sky might seem the least of our worries in today's world. And yet a growing chorus of voices, many in the preservation community, is making a case for action: The night sky is a primal element of our human heritage, perhaps the ultimate cultural entity. It is the eternal backdrop to human history, inspiration of thought and belief, source of some of the deepest questions human beings have posed about themselves and their place in the world.

Review Of There Once Was A Sky Full Of Stars, Beth Bojarski
Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education
There Once Was A Sky Full of Stars is a beautifully written and poignantly illustrated children's book looking at the past, present and future status of light pollution. It is an ideal read for helping children and adults understand the issues of light pollution and to begin opening their eyes to the harm that is done to the environment and to future generations in innocent ways. "Some children won't care to look up in the air, Those stars are just stories, they'll say."
The Development Of A Trial Making Test In Young Children: The Trails-P, Kimberly Espy, Mary F. Cwik
The Development Of A Trial Making Test In Young Children: The Trails-P, Kimberly Espy, Mary F. Cwik
Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience Laboratory: Faculty Publications
Preschool children have a more limited verbal repertoire, less proficient manual skills, and more variable attention spans relative to those of school age, with comparatively few neuropsychological tasks available for use in this age range. A prototypic neuropsychological test, the Trail Making Test, was adapted for use with young children, the TRAILS-P, using a developmentally salient storybook format with colorful stimuli in differing conditions with varying executive demands. The TRAILS-P was administered to 103 normally developing preschoolers between 2 and 6 years of age; 30 of these children were retested within one month to determine test reliability. Correlations among latencies …
Using Developmental, Cognitive, And Neuroscience Approaches To Understand Executive Control In Young Children, K. A. Espy
Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience Laboratory: Faculty Publications
The 7 articles in this special issue address the nature of executive control in young children. Executive control is framed in a developmental context, where the unique aspects of cognition in this age range are considered. The set of articles demonstrates the multidisciplinary approaches to study cognition in young children that includes application of cognitive, neuroscience, and developmental paradigms in typically developing youngsters, as well as those affected by clinical conditions, such as traumatic brain injury, exposure to low levels of lead in the environment, and prematurity. Although much work remains to be done, these study results are illustrative of …

Executive Function In Preschool Children: Examination Through Everyday Behavior, P. K. Isquith, G. Gioia, K. A. Espy
Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience Laboratory: Faculty Publications
Clinical assessment of executive function in preschool-age children is challenging given limited availability of standardized tasks and preschoolers' variable ability to participate in lengthy formal evaluation procedures. Given the benefits of ecological validity of measuring behavior by rating scales, the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function (Gioia, Isquith, Guy, & Kenworthy, 2000) was modified for use with children ages 2 through 5 years to assess executive functions in an everyday context. The scale development process, based on samples of 460 parents and 302 teachers, yielded a single 63-item measure with 5 related, but nonoverlapping, scales, with good internal consistency and …

Using Path Analysis To Understand Executive Function Organization In Preschool Children, T. E. Senn, K. A. Espy, P. M. Kaufmann
Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience Laboratory: Faculty Publications
There continues to be no consensus definition of executive functions. One way to understand different executive function components is to study abilities at their emergence, that is, early in development, and use advanced statistical methods to understand the interrelations among executive processes. However, to fully determine the constructs of interest, these methods often require complete data on a large battery of tasks, which are difficult to obtain with young children. Path analysis is an alternative statistical technique that requires only a single measure of each construct, yet still allows researchers to investigate complex relations among measures, to compare nested models, …

Tandem Inverted Repeat System For Selection Of Effective Transgenic Rnai Strains In Chlamydomonas, Jennifer Rohr, Nandita Sarkar, Susan Belanger, Byeong-Ryool Jeong, Heriberto D. Cerutti
Center for Plant Science Innovation: Faculty Publications
RNA interference (RNAi), the double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) triggered post-transcriptional gene silencing, is becoming a powerful tool for reverse genetics studies. Stable RNAi, induced by the expression of inverted repeat (IR) transgenes, has been achieved in protozoa, algae, fungi, plants, and metazoans. However, the level of gene silencing is often quite variable, depending on the type of construct, transgene copy number, site of integration, and target gene. This is a hindrance in functional genomics studies, where it is desirable to suppress target genes reliably to analyze unknown phenotypes. Consequently, we explored strategies for direct selection of effective transgenic RNAi lines in …

A Further Modified Ten-Square, Jeff Grant
A Further Modified Ten-Square, Jeff Grant
Word Ways
The original ASTRALISED ten-square in the November 1990 Word Ways, and the modified DISTALISED square in February 2002. Inspired by Rex Gooch's recent groundbreaking discoveries, I have no further modified this square. The latest effort is an interesting mix of old and new. There are only two proper names, a place and a person, both American. Everything else is uncapitalized and, with one exception, solid-form. Every item in the square comes from America or Britain, and they can all be found either on the Internet (using the Google search program), or in major English-language references.
Are All Words Interesting
Word Ways
In the February '77 Word Ways (77-8), Dmitri Borgmann proposed as the keystone of logology that all words are logologically interesting, illustrating with twenty random words. Pamela Brang provided seventeen more examples by the same method (77-163). But thirty-seven out of some half a million words is not proof.
