Who Murdered Roger?, John E. Connett

Word Ways

This continuation of the Reg-and-Roger theme (see the May 2004 Word Ways) is centered on murder. Some of the illustrious suspects are Nero, Peter Lorre, Errol Flynn and Aldo Ray, but I think Emil or Iris did it!

Review Of Biological Time, Beth Bojarski Nov 2004

Review Of Biological Time, Beth Bojarski

Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education

Biological time describes the "natural lifecycles and events of organisms dictated by the presence or absence of light . . . [it is a] unifying theory, linking the timing of ancient calendars with modern scientific research and historical records that show how the natural world is marching to a drumbeat that we are just now learning how to hear."

Review Of Clearing Magazine, Beth Bojarski Nov 2004

Review Of Clearing Magazine, Beth Bojarski

Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education

At first glance, Clearing Magazine could be passed off as a publication specific to Northwestern North America as one grazes through the upcoming news and events that focus on clinics and conferences in California, Idaho and Washington. However, a deeper look conveys substantial contributions to the environmental education field on all levels and locations. Topics covered range from practical to extremely thought provoking and inspiring.

The Dynamics And Tuning Of Orchestral Crotales, Bradley M. Deutsch, Cherie L. Ramirez, Thomas R. Moore Nov 2004

The Dynamics And Tuning Of Orchestral Crotales, Bradley M. Deutsch, Cherie L. Ramirez, Thomas R. Moore

Student-Faculty Collaborative Research Publications

Crotales are center-weighted, tuned cymbals that are found in the percussion section of most orchestras. They are arranged like a keyboard in octave sets and are commercially available in two octaves, from C6 to C8. Little information about the physics of crotales has been reported in the literature, despite their having the interesting property of producing a particularly pleasing sound. In this study, the acoustic and vibrational properties of crotales from C6 to C8 are theoretically and experimentally investigated. Interferograms of typical vibrational modes are presented, and the frequencies of the acoustically important modes of crotales are identified and reported. …

Sustained Growth In Nebraska, Saeed Ahmad, John Austin, Tom Doering, Ernie Goss, Bruce Johnson, Mike Lundeen, Donis Petersan, Franz Schwarz, Eric Thompson, Keith Turner Nov 2004

Sustained Growth In Nebraska, Saeed Ahmad, John Austin, Tom Doering, Ernie Goss, Bruce Johnson, Mike Lundeen, Donis Petersan, Franz Schwarz, Eric Thompson, Keith Turner

Business in Nebraska

National Macroeconomic conditions are favorable for future expansion of income, employment, and revenue in Nebraska. In particular, the U.S. economy is now in the heart of an expansion expected to persist over the three year forecast period. The principal engine of growth will be a sustained expansion in private sector investment and consumption demand.

However, the rate of growth in the national economy likely will be moderate rather than rapid. At least three factors will act to moderate growth. The first is higher energy prices. Rapid growth in global demand is expected to keep prices for oil and natural gas …

Between Dancing And Writing: The Practice Of Religious Studies, Kimerer L. Lamothe Nov 2004

Between Dancing And Writing: The Practice Of Religious Studies, Kimerer L. Lamothe

Philosophy & Theory

This book provides philosophical grounds for an emerging area of scholarship: the study of religion and dance.

In the first part, LaMothe investigates why scholars in religious studies have tended to overlook dance, or rhythmic bodily movement, in favor of textual expressions of religious life. In close readings of Descartes, Kant, Schleiermacher, Hegel, and Kierkegaard, LaMothe traces this attitude to formative moments of the field in which philosophers relied upon the practice of writing to mediate between the study of “religion,” on the one hand, and “theology,” on the other.

In the second part, LaMothe revives the work of theologian, …

Daily Experiences Of Emotions And Social Contexts Of Securely And Insecurely Attached Young Adults, Julia C. Torquati, Marcela Raffaelli Nov 2004

Daily Experiences Of Emotions And Social Contexts Of Securely And Insecurely Attached Young Adults, Julia C. Torquati, Marcela Raffaelli

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

This study examined daily emotions and social contexts of young adults who differed in global attachment style (secure vs. insecure). Sixty-nine college students (41% male, 59% female) completed self-report measures of attachment and provided timesampling data on moods, companionship, and activities using the experience sampling method. Secure (n = 41) and insecure (n = 28) young adults spent a similar proportion of time with familiar intimates and alone. Secure individuals reported significantly more positive affect, higher levels of energy, and more connection than insecure individuals when they were alone and higher levels of energy and connection in the context …

Children’S Perceptions Of Family Relationships As Assessed In A Doll Story Completion Task: Links To Parenting, Social Competence, And Externalizing Behavior, Deborah Laible, Gustavo Carlo, Julia C. Torquati, Lenna Ontai Nov 2004

Children’S Perceptions Of Family Relationships As Assessed In A Doll Story Completion Task: Links To Parenting, Social Competence, And Externalizing Behavior, Deborah Laible, Gustavo Carlo, Julia C. Torquati, Lenna Ontai

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

This study was designed to examine the links between parenting, children’s perceptions of family relationships, and children’s social behavior. Seventy-four children (M age = 6.01 years; 39 boys; 35 girls) and their parents took part in the study. Children completed relationship-oriented doll stories that were coded for coherence, prosocial themes, and aggressive themes. Parents completed a report of their child’s social behavior, a parenting scale, and a number of demographic items. Teachers also completed measures of children’s social competence and externalizing behavior. Warm parenting predicted both a child’s representation of prosocial themes in the doll stories and social competence, whereas …

Review Of The Elegant Universe, Charles Yaple Nov 2004

Review Of The Elegant Universe, Charles Yaple

Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education

While a theory of everything (TOE) still eludes physicists, Greene shares in understandable, and at times entertaining, terms how superstring theory may bridge the gap "between the laws of the large - general relativity - and the laws of the small - quantum mechanics." As they now stand, both cannot be correct. General relativity is very accurate in explaining the behavior of the universe at large and quantum mechanics in describing behavior of subatomic particles. However, they "collide horribly" when physicists try to explain such things as black holes and the early conditions of the big bang.
