Coordination Variables And Consensus Building In Multiple Vehicle Systems, Tim Mclain Nov 2004

Coordination Variables And Consensus Building In Multiple Vehicle Systems, Tim Mclain

Faculty Publications

Much of the research focus in the cooperative control community has been on formation control problems. This focus may be due to the fact that the group control problem can be reduced to well-established single-agent control problems by employing a leader-follower type control strategy. For example, single-agent path planning and trajectory generation techniques can be employed for the leader, and conventional trajectory tracking strategies can be employed for the followers. Indeed, formation control problems are much like linear systems theory: we search where the light is the brightest. It can be argued that formation control problems are the simplest type …

What Are The Building Blocks Of Our Universe?, Kameshwar C. Wali

Physics - All Scholarship

We are told that we are living in a Golden Age of Astronomy. Cosmological Parameters are found with un precedented accuracy. Yet, the known form of matter forms only a small fraction of the total energy density of the universe. Also, a mysterious dark energy dominates the universe and causes acceleration in the rate of expansion.

Lawrence University Anthropologist Discusses Human’S Diet Through The Ages, Lawrence University Nov 2004

Lawrence University Anthropologist Discusses Human’S Diet Through The Ages, Lawrence University

Press Releases

Lawrence University anthropologist Mark Jenike discusses man’s ever-changing diet, from that of our earliest ancestors to the current low-carb craze, in a Lawrence Mortar Board “First Chance, Last Chance” lecture.

Jenike presents “From Chimips to Cheese Curds: Evolutionary Perspectives on Human Nutrition,” Wednesday, Nov. 17 at 7 p.m. in Lawrence’s Science Hall, Room 102.

Nutrition, or lack thereof, plays a major role in many of the causes of adult mortality today, from heart disease and stroke to cancer and diabetes, spawning an entire industry devoted to dieting, weight loss and fitness. Human ancestry is often cited in promotional materials for …

Contract Law And Decisions On Costs, Marco Stacher Nov 2004

Contract Law And Decisions On Costs, Marco Stacher

Cornell Law School J.D. Student Research Papers

The national statutes on international commercial arbitration, the leges arbitri, do, as a rule, not contain provisions on costs. In the final award, an arbitrator has to determine the costs of the arbitration (the fees of the arbitral tribunals, of expert witnesses mandated by the arbitral tribunal etc.), which cost incurred by the parties during the arbitration are recoverable and which party has to bear what share of the costs. A decision on these issues forms part of the ordinary course of an arbitration. Further cost-related issues may arise due to the peculiarities of the case, such as a refusal …

A Bayesian Method For Finding Interactions In Genomic Studies, Wei Chen, Debashis Ghosh, Trivellore E. Raghuanthan, Sharon Kardia Nov 2004

A Bayesian Method For Finding Interactions In Genomic Studies, Wei Chen, Debashis Ghosh, Trivellore E. Raghuanthan, Sharon Kardia

The University of Michigan Department of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

An important step in building a multiple regression model is the selection of predictors. In genomic and epidemiologic studies, datasets with a small sample size and a large number of predictors are common. In such settings, most standard methods for identifying a good subset of predictors are unstable. Furthermore, there is an increasing emphasis towards identification of interactions, which has not been studied much in the statistical literature. We propose a method, called BSI (Bayesian Selection of Interactions), for selecting predictors in a regression setting when the number of predictors is considerably larger than the sample size with a focus …

Modeling And Prediction For Nonlinear Time Series, Jane L. Harvill Nov 2004

Modeling And Prediction For Nonlinear Time Series, Jane L. Harvill

Probability & Statistics Seminar

We present three methods for forecasting using a functional coefficient autoregressive (FCAR) model for univariate and vector time series. The first method is a "naive forecast," and the form of the functional coefficient is determined using only the within-sample series values. The second method is a bootstrap predictor, and is a variation of the naïve forecast with predicted values computed using a bootstrap value of within-sample residuals from the fitted FCAR model. The final method is a multistage method, where the functional coefficients are updated at each step to incorporate the information from the time series in the predicted response. …

Parsing Concurrent Xml, Ionut E. Iacob, Alex Dekhtyar, Kazuyo Kaneko Nov 2004

Parsing Concurrent Xml, Ionut E. Iacob, Alex Dekhtyar, Kazuyo Kaneko

Computer Science and Software Engineering

Concurrent markup hierarchies appear often in document-centric XML documents, as a result of different XML elements having overlapping scopes. They require significantly different approach to management and maintenance. Management of XML documents composed of concurrent markup has been mostly studied by the document processing community and has attracted attention of computer scientists only recently. In this paper we discuss the architecture of an XML parser for concurrent XML. This parser uses a GODDAG data structure in place of traditional DOM Tree to store concurrent markup on top of the document content and provides a DOM-like API that allows software developers …

Evidence For And Characterization Of Ca2+ Binding To The Catalytic Region Of Arabidopsis Thaliana Phospholipase Dβ, Xuemin Wang Nov 2004

Evidence For And Characterization Of Ca2+ Binding To The Catalytic Region Of Arabidopsis Thaliana Phospholipase Dβ, Xuemin Wang

Biology Department Faculty Works

Most types of plant phospholipase D (PLD) require Ca2+ for activity, but how Ca2+ affects PLD activity is not well understood. We reported previously that Ca2+ binds to the regulatory C2 domain that occurs in the N terminus of the Ca2+-requiring PLDs. Using Arabidopsis thaliana PLDβ and C2-deleted PLDβ (PLDβcat), we now show that Ca2+ also interacts with the catalytic regions of PLD. PLDβcat exhibited Ca2+-dependent activity, was much less active, and required a higher level of Ca2+ than the full-length PLDβ. Ca2+ binding of the proteins was stimulated by phospholipids; phosphatidylserine was the most effective among those tested. Scatchard …
