The Northwest’S Phantom Pool: Superintendent Certificate Holders Who Do Not Plan To Apply And Why, Mimi Wolverton
The Northwest’S Phantom Pool: Superintendent Certificate Holders Who Do Not Plan To Apply And Why, Mimi Wolverton
The Rural Educator
Responses gathered in a recent study of the superintendency in the Pacific Northwest suggest that less than 25% of sitting superintendents in the year 2000 were under the age of 50; and 40% of those who were 50 years or older planned to retire within the next four years. While the pool of potential applicants includes over 1,000 superintendent certificate holders, fewer than 150 of respondents in the same study planned to apply for upcoming vacancies. This article examines aspects of the position that serve as disincentives to seemingly qualified candidates and the policy ramifications of possible pool inadequacy within …

Edward W. Chance Dissertation Award: Upon Entering College: First Semester Experiences Of First-Generation, Rural Students From Agricultural Families, Patrick F. Schultz
The Rural Educator
First-generation and rural college students are considered by many retention theorists and practitioners to be an at-risk population. This study examined the details of the first semester in postsecondary education from the perspective of a group of students who met the demographic criteria of being first-generation to go to college, from rural geographical areas, and from agricultural backgrounds. It focused on the first semester experience, during its occurrence, and how six students of this specific population viewed that phenomenon. A secondary objective was to determine if the understandings that issued from the research could form a foundation from which first …

Microarray Profiling For Differential Gene Expression In Ovaries And Ovarian, A. R. Caetano, R. K. Johnson, J. J. Ford, Daniel Pomp
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
A unique index line of pigs created by long-term selection ovulates on average 6.7 more ova than its randomly selected control line. Expression profiling experiments were conducted to identify differentially expressed genes in ovarian tissues of the index and control lines during days 2–6 of the follicular phase of the estrous cycle. Fluorescently labeled cDNAs derived from ovary and follicle RNA were cohybridized on microarray slides (n = 90) containing 4608 follicle-derived probes printed in duplicate. Statistical analysis of the resulting ~1.6 million data points with a mixed-model approach identified 88 and 74 unique probes, representing 71 and 59 …

Azaadamantanone 1 was converted to a series of aminoazaadamantane benzamides 9a–d, which were profiled for serotonin receptor activity. Aminomethylazaadamantane SC-54750 is a potent 5-HT4 agonist and 5-HT3 antagonist with in vivo efficacy in gastroparesis models and also inhibits cisplatin-induced emesis.

Judicial Power & Civil Rights Reconsidered, David E. Bernstein, Ilya Somin
Judicial Power & Civil Rights Reconsidered, David E. Bernstein, Ilya Somin
George Mason University School of Law Working Papers Series
Michael Klarman's "From Jim Crow to Civil Rights: The Supreme Court and the Struggle for Racial Equality" is an important contribution to the scholarly literature on both the history of the civil rights struggle and judicial power more generally. Klarman argues that for much of the twentieth century, the Supreme Court was very reluctant to rule in favor of African American civil rights claimants, and had little impact when it did.
Klarman is right to reject traditional accounts that greatly exaggerated the Supreme Court's willingness and ability to protect minorities. However, he overstates his case. The Court's views on the …

Interfacial Stability Of Electrodeposition Of Cuprous Oxide Thin Films, Partho Neogi

Experiments on deposition of Cu2O films from basic cupper sulfate solution show that copper also deposits. At low, but basic values of pH only copper deposits and at high pH only cuprous oxide deposits. In the intermediate range where both compete the system shows oscillations at "constant current." Linear stability analysis has been conducted for such an electrochemical cell to show that oscillations can take place in the parameter space identified in the experiments. The results are keeping with most of the experimental observations, which are many, but not with all. The physical mechanisms behind the oscillations are …

“We believe it is the duty of both policy makers and educators to identify qualified minority youth and place them in channels that ensure success.” The ultimate objective of any college minority recruitment and retention effort should be to train and cultivate qualified students of color for leadership in their community, as well as the general society. The existence of special problems and conditions within certain communities is well documented. Although the success of university-community collaboration efforts varies from one community to the next, most college officials nonetheless find themselves calling for greater representation and participation. This workshop will present the …
