Generalized Design Of Diffractive Optical Elements Using Neural Networks, Ajay Pasupuleti, Anand Gopalan, Ferat Sahin, Mustafa A.G. Abushagur Nov 2004

Generalized Design Of Diffractive Optical Elements Using Neural Networks, Ajay Pasupuleti, Anand Gopalan, Ferat Sahin, Mustafa A.G. Abushagur

Presentations and other scholarship

Diffractive optical elements (DOE) utilize diffraction to manipulate light in optical systems. These elements have a wide range of applications including optical interconnects, coherent beam addition, laser beam shaping and refractive optics aberration correction. Due to the wide range of applications, optimal design of DOE has become an important research problem. In the design of the DOEs, existing techniques utilize the Fresnel diffraction theory to compute the phase at the desired location at the output plane. This process involves solving nonlinear integral equations for which various numerical methods along with robust optimization algorithms exist in literature. However all the algorithms …

Additive-Assisted Cerium-Based Electrolytic Coating Process For Corrosion Protection Of Aluminum Alloys, James O. Stoffer, Thomas J. O'Keefe, Eric L. Morris, Scott Hayes, Paul Yu, Alex Williams, Xuan Lin

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The corrosion resistance of an aluminum or aluminum alloy component is enhanced by immersing an aluminum alloy to act as a cathode and an oxygen-evolving anode in an electrolyte comprising water, cerium ions, and an additive selected from among animal gelatin, derivatives of animal gelatin, and amino acids, then passing an electrical current through the electrolyte to deposit a cerium-based coating onto the aluminum-based component.

Iran, The Status Quo Power, Mohsen M. Milani Nov 2004

Iran, The Status Quo Power, Mohsen M. Milani

Government and International Affairs Faculty Publications

In what follows, I will discuss the transformation of Iran’s Persian Gulf policy since 1979, its role in past regional security regimes, its reaction to the emerging strategic situation in the region, and its current policy toward Iraq. I will make four main arguments. First, the collapse of Saddam Husayn has accelerated Iran’s transformation from a revolutionary to a regional status quo power in search of creating “spheres of influence.” One of Iran’s ultimate strategic goals is to become a hub for the transit of goods and services between the Persian Gulf and Afghanistan, Central Asia, and possibly China. Second, …

Detecting Submerged Features In Water: Modeling, Sensors, And Measurements, Charles R. Bostater, Luce Bassetti Nov 2004

Detecting Submerged Features In Water: Modeling, Sensors, And Measurements, Charles R. Bostater, Luce Bassetti

Ocean Engineering and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

It is becoming more important to understand the remote sensing systems and associated autonomous or semi-autonomous methodologies (robotic & mechatronics) that may be utilized in freshwater and marine aquatic environments. This need comes from several issues related not only to advances in our scientific understanding and technological capabilities, but also from the desire to insure that the risk associated with UXO (unexploded ordnance), related submerged mines, as well as submerged targets (such as submerged aquatic vegetation) and debris left from previous human activities are remotely sensed and identified followed by reduced risks through detection and removal. This paper will describe …

32nd Faulkner & Yoknapatawpha Conference Invites Papers On "Faulkner's Inheritance", Donald Kartiganer

University of Mississippi News

As much as the fictional character closest to him - Quentin Compson - William Faulkner was "an empty hall echoing with sonorous defeated names... a commonwealth... a barracks filled with stubborn back-looking ghosts." The names and ghosts, of course, were not just those of the Old South and the war fought on its behalf, but the world that grew up in the wake of their passing....

Antenna Array Output Power Minimization Using Steepest Descent Adaptive Algorithm, Sandra Gomulka Johnson Nov 2004

Antenna Array Output Power Minimization Using Steepest Descent Adaptive Algorithm, Sandra Gomulka Johnson

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A beamforming antenna array is a set of antennas whose outputs are weighted by complex values and combined to form the array output. The effect of the complex valued weights is to steer lobes and nulls of the array pattern to desired directions. These directions may be unknown and so the antenna weights must be adjusted adaptively until some measure of array performance is improved, indicating proper lobe or null placement.

An adaptive algorithm to adjust the complex weights of an antenna array is presented that nulls high power signals while allowing reception of GPS signals as long as the …

On Sport and Society

Attention Hypocrites! Your future is in the executive suites of television networks and the officialdom of the National Football League. The only requirement is that you have the ability to make self-righteous pronouncements about public morality and taste while maintaining your composure and never once betraying yourself with so much as a hint of a smile. Even, the now fashionable smirk, will not be tolerated. If you get really good at this and have a relative in the cabinet you might even be appointed to head the FCC.

The Unsolvable Dilemma Of A Paretian Policymaker, Giuseppe Dari-Mattiacci, Nuno Garoupa Nov 2004

The Unsolvable Dilemma Of A Paretian Policymaker, Giuseppe Dari-Mattiacci, Nuno Garoupa

George Mason University School of Law Working Papers Series

In this paper, we argue that social decisionmaking is subject to a fundamental conflict between consistency and completeness. We show that a consistent welfarist method of policy assessment, that is, one that never violates the Pareto principle, may be incomplete in the sense of being incapable of providing a solution to important social welfare problems.

Crossed Signals In A Wireless World: The Seventh Circuit’S Misapplication Of The Complete Preemption Doctrine, Matthew J. Kleiman Nov 2004

Crossed Signals In A Wireless World: The Seventh Circuit’S Misapplication Of The Complete Preemption Doctrine, Matthew J. Kleiman

Duke Law & Technology Review

As the number of wireless telephone users continues to proliferate, so does the number of lawsuits against wireless service providers. While consumers seek to utilize various consumer-friendly state law causes of action, the wireless industry continues to push for a uniform federal regulatory regime. Ambiguous language in the Federal Communications Act of 1934 ("FCA") and disagreement among the federal circuits has led to much confusion over whether state law claims affecting wireless rates and market entry are removable to federal court by way of "complete preemption." This iBrief argues that FCA's preemption power is limited by its savings clause, failure …

Ac/Dc Switch Mode Power Supply With Power Factor Correction Using Direct Energy Transfer Concept, Issa Batarseh, Peter Kornetzky, Shiguo Luo, Weihong Qiu Nov 2004

Ac/Dc Switch Mode Power Supply With Power Factor Correction Using Direct Energy Transfer Concept, Issa Batarseh, Peter Kornetzky, Shiguo Luo, Weihong Qiu

UCF Patents

Power factor correction (PFC) "flyboost" cell with a transformer having primary winding connected to input power and secondary winding connected to output rectifier, which has both functions as a flyback transformer and boost inductor. Combining the flyboost cell with DC/DC converter cells, forms a single-stage PFC converters. Both cells share one main switch and one controller. Letting the flyboost cell operate at Discontinous Coduction Mode requires a simple control for high power factor. Through flyboost cell, part of output power is processed once by main switch, and is referred to as direct power transfer (DPT), which will signficantly improve efficiency. …

Perceptual Evaluation Of Point-Based Object Representation, Paul Schwarz Nov 2004

Perceptual Evaluation Of Point-Based Object Representation, Paul Schwarz

Computer Science Honors Theses

Researchers have proposed several methods of representing three-dimensional objects in computer memory along with different methods of displaying these objects on two-dimensional computer displays. Using a polygon-based representation that linearly interpolates between a set of sample points is by far the most popular way of representing objects today, mostly because of its ability to display an object on a computer screen at a fast and consistent rate. However, as graphics hardware increases in speed, polygon-based models prove to be increasingly inefficient. Point-based representations have been proposed that consist of densely sampling some surface and using solely the samples to portray …

Endocrine System, Richard A. Dienstbier Nov 2004

Endocrine System, Richard A. Dienstbier

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

In complex animals the two principal systems of regulation are the endocrine system and the nervous systems. The endocrine system consists of the ductless endocrine glands, which secrete hormones directly into the bloodstream. The endocrine system and the autonomic nervous system both regulate most of the involuntary functions of the body, including circulatory functions (e.g., blood pressure and heart rate), energy and arousal levels, reproductive functions, and the immune system. Another major function of endocrine hormones is to regulate tissue growth in young, developing organisms. This abbreviated summary of endocrine system responses to challenge and threat illustrates some of the …

Does The Halting Necessary For Hardware Trace Collection Inordinately Perturb The Results?, Myles G. Watson Nov 2004

Does The Halting Necessary For Hardware Trace Collection Inordinately Perturb The Results?, Myles G. Watson

Theses and Dissertations

Processor address traces are invaluable for characterizing workloads and testing proposed memory hierarchies. Long traces are needed to exercise modern cache designs and produce meaningful results, but are difficult to collect with hardware monitors because microprocessors access memory too frequently for disks or other large storage to keep up. The small, fast buffers of the monitors fill quickly; in order to obtain long contiguous traces, the processor must be stopped while the buffer is emptied. This halting may perturb the traces collected, but this cannot be measured directly, since long uninterrupted traces cannot be collected. We make the case that …

Real-Time Image Enhancement Using Texture Synthesis, Matthew J. Sorensen Nov 2004

Real-Time Image Enhancement Using Texture Synthesis, Matthew J. Sorensen

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents an approach to real-time image enhancement using texture synthesis. Traditional image enhancement techniques are typically time consuming, lack realistic detail, or do not scale well for large magnification factors.

Real-time Enhancement using Texture Synthesis (RETS) combines interpolation, classification, and patch-based texture synthesis to enhance low-resolution imagery, particularly aerial imagery. RETS uses as input a low-resolution source image and several high-resolution sample textures. The output of RETS is a high-resolution image with the structure of the source image, but with detail consistent with the high-resolution sample textures. We show that RETS can enhance large amounts of imagery in …

Influence Of Water Waves On Hyperspectral Remote Sensing Of Subsurface Water Features, Charles R. Bostater Jr., Luce Bassetti Nov 2004

Influence Of Water Waves On Hyperspectral Remote Sensing Of Subsurface Water Features, Charles R. Bostater Jr., Luce Bassetti

Ocean Engineering and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Modeled hyperspectral reflectance signatures with water wave influences are simulated using an analytical-based, iterative radiative transport model applicable to shallow or deep waters. Light transport within the water body is simulated using a fast, accurate radiative transfer model that calculates the light distribution in any layered media and incorporates realistic water surfaces which are synthesized using empirically-based spectral models of the water surface to generate water surface wave facets. The model simulated synthetic images are displayed as 24 bit RGB images of the water surface using selected channels from the simulated synthetic hyperspectral image cube. We show selected channels centered …
