Entrepreneurial Orientation As A Basis For Classification Within A Service Industry: The Case Of Retail Pharmacy Industry, Thanigavelan Jambulingam, Ravi Kathuria, William R. Doucette Nov 2004

Entrepreneurial Orientation As A Basis For Classification Within A Service Industry: The Case Of Retail Pharmacy Industry, Thanigavelan Jambulingam, Ravi Kathuria, William R. Doucette

Business Faculty Articles and Research

To date, service classification research has primarily taken a macro view, creating service typologies or taxonomies by using dimensions such as customer contact or degree of labor intensity. Such classification schemes, though helpful in deciphering critical management issues and positioning strategies between service industries, tend to treat an entire industry, such as airlines, as a single homogenous entity. However, organizations in the same industry often use intangible resources, such as entrepreneurial orientation processes, to compete with one another. Resource-advantage theory suggests that organizations utilize intangible resources to build long-term strategies and a sustainable competitive advantage leading to superior performance. We …

Women In Agriculture, Karrie Blake Nov 2004

Women In Agriculture, Karrie Blake

Cornhusker Economics

Although farm numbers continue to decline, women in agriculture are increasing their responsibility in decision making and management on the farm. According to the 2002 U.S. Agricultural Census the number of farms in Nebraska was 49,355, down 10 percent from 1997. However, the number of female principle operators in Nebraska was up from 2,948 in 1997 to 3,005 in 2002 according to the census. T his is a small increase compared to the 13 percent jump of women operating farms in the nation (209,784 in 1997 to 237,819 in 2002). Of those principal female operators in Nebraska, 1,568 have farming …

Introducing Matik Service - Proposition For A New It Communication System Through An Approach In Kansei., Pierre Levy, Shin Young Park, Toshimasa Yamanaka

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Even though IT is a very convenient tool for virtual communities to correspond, limitations are many and, for most of them, already known. This paper focuses on the issues related with tacit knowledge and subjective communication. The aim is to introduce an original software taking user’s subjectivity into account to optimize information flow. This research has been launch as a part of the 21st Century COE Program, sponsored by the MEXT, aiming at structuring Kansei as a science. Three laboratories with different specialties are working on this common program. As various knowledge is sharing between various people, a quick multiplication …

According to the social, economic, technological, and cultural aspects of change leading from the past to the present and to the future, a number of products, life styles, and practices are created, nullified, or combined to generate different forms of values. Likewise in the automotive industry, there have been a variety of genres that have gone through the process of creation, fixation, disappearance, or transformation for a short period of more than 100 years. As the recent changes in human needs are globalization and complicated, the automotive genre is rapidly diversified and combined in terms of style, function, performance, and …

Creating User Centred Designers., Andrée Woodcock Nov 2004

Creating User Centred Designers., Andrée Woodcock

DRS Biennial Conference Series

The failure of practicing designers and engineers to encompass ergonomics issues in their practice has long been a source of frustration for both ergonomists and customers - ergonomists, because they know their discipline could inform and benefit the end product, and customers suffer the consequences of poor design. Although the relationship between ergonomics and design has been well explored, and has led to the development of various solutions - these have not had the major impact on design that was desired. This paper looks at a new approach, through education, that might lead to the creation of more user centred …

Design, Drawing And Dialogue Interaction In Computer-Supported Collaborative Work (Cscw) In Design., Phebe Mann Nov 2004

Design, Drawing And Dialogue Interaction In Computer-Supported Collaborative Work (Cscw) In Design., Phebe Mann

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Most research studies looking at computer-supported collaborative design have focused on either synchronous or asynchronous modes of communication, but near-synchronous working has received relatively little attention. Yet it could be argued that near-synchronous communication encourages creative, rhetorical and critical exchanges of ideas, building on each other’s contributions. Although many researchers have carried out studies on collaborative design protocols (Cross, 1997; Gabriel and Maher 1999; Peng, 1994), argumentation and constructive interaction (Baker, 1999), but little is known about the interaction between drawing and dialogue in collaborative design. This research explored and established the needs of design students engaged in collaborative design …

From Wounded To Woman: The Demasculinization Of Hemingway’S Wounded Male Characters, Myla B. Morris Nov 2004

From Wounded To Woman: The Demasculinization Of Hemingway’S Wounded Male Characters, Myla B. Morris

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

During his time of service in the Italian Army in World War I, Ernest Hemingway was injured. He received a non-life-threatening wound and was forever changed. In his article, "Ernest Hemingway: The Life as Fiction and the Fiction as Life," Jackson J. Benson proposes the idea of Hemingway's "wounding what if?" that follows this course of thought: "What if I were wounded and made crazy?, what would happen if I were sent back to the front? I was only wounded in an accident, what do the really brave ones think of me? (351)" Shortly following the war, Hemingway was wounded …

A P300-Based Brain-Computer Interface: Testing An Alternative Method Of Communication, Eric W. Sellers

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The current study evaluates the effectiveness of a Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) system that operates by detecting a P300 elicited by one of four randomly presented stimuli (i.e., YES, NO, PASS, END). Two groups of participants were tested. The first group included three ALS patients that varied in degree of disability, but all retained the ability to communicate; the second group included three Non-ALS controls. Each participant participated in ten experimental sessions during a period of approximately 6 weeks. Sessions were conducted either at the participant's home or in the lab. During each run the participant's task was to attend to …

They Shoot Single People, Don't They?, Dianne J. Smith

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

They Shoot Single People, Don't They? is a romantic comedy of errors set in Boston about Lexie, a twenty-five year old pediatric nurse with still perky breasts and lightly dimpled thighs who can figure out pediatric drug dosages, but is so severely relationship-challenged that she can't make any choice at all when it comes to men. Her life becomes a convoluted mess that includes two guys and a tangled web of lies.

After Marcus dumps her with a post-it note taped to her refrigerator door, Lexie thinks that her five-year plan to get married and have a baby are back …

Road Crack Condition Performance Modeling Using Recurrent Markov Chains And Artificial Neural Networks, Jidong Yang Nov 2004

Road Crack Condition Performance Modeling Using Recurrent Markov Chains And Artificial Neural Networks, Jidong Yang

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Timely identification of undesirable pavement crack conditions has been a major task in pavement management. Up to date, myriads of pavement performance models have been developed for forecasting pavement crack condition with the traditional preferred techniques being the use of regression relationships developed from laboratory and/or field statistical data. However, it becomes difficult for regression techniques to predict the crack performance accurately and robustly in the presence of a variety of tributary factors, high nonlinearity, and uncertainty. With the advancement of modeling techniques, two innovative breeds of models, Artificial Neural Networks and Markov Chains, have drawn increasing attention from researchers …

Choice Of Monitoring Mechanism For Optimal Nonparametric Functional Estimation For Binary Data, Nicholas P. Jewell, Mark J. Van Der Laan, Stephen Shiboski Nov 2004

Choice Of Monitoring Mechanism For Optimal Nonparametric Functional Estimation For Binary Data, Nicholas P. Jewell, Mark J. Van Der Laan, Stephen Shiboski

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Optimal designs of dose levels in order to estimate parameters from a model for binary response data have a long and rich history. These designs are based on parametric models. Here we consider fully nonparametric models with interest focused on estimation of smooth functionals using plug-in estimators based on the nonparametric maximum likelihood estimator. An important application of the results is the derivation of the optimal choice of the monitoring time distribution function for current status observation of a survival distribution. The optimal choice depends in a simple way on the dose response function and the form of the functional. …
