Concurrent Oh Imager And Sodiumtemperature/Wind Lidar Observation Of A Mesopause Region Undular Bore Event Over Fort Collins/Platteville, Co, C. Y. She, T. Li, B. P. Williams, Tao Yuan, R. H. Picard Nov 2004

Concurrent Oh Imager And Sodiumtemperature/Wind Lidar Observation Of A Mesopause Region Undular Bore Event Over Fort Collins/Platteville, Co, C. Y. She, T. Li, B. P. Williams, Tao Yuan, R. H. Picard

All Physics Faculty Publications

We reported the observation of a mesospheric front with the properties of an undular bore by an OH imager, over the Fort Collins/Platteville area on 6/7 October 2002. Unlike the earlier bore observations, a Na lidar capable of measuring mesopause region temperature, zonal, and meridional winds was in operation concurrently. The lidar data confirm, for the first time, the existence of a collocated temperature inversion layer to serve as the ducting region for bore propagation, as required by the simple theory proposed by Dewan and Picard 6 years ago. In addition, the lidar data in principle provide sufficient information for …

The Revised Classification For Scarabaeoidea: What The Hell Is Going On?, Brett C. Ratcliffe, Mary Liz Jameson

University of Nebraska State Museum: Entomology Papers

Considering the turmoil and vast changes in the classification of the superfamily Scarabaeoidea during the last 20 years, particularly in North America, we were asked to provide an update for the readers of Scarabs wherein we offer our perspectives. Much of what follows is extracted from our scarabaeoid introduction in American Beetles (Jameson and Ratcliffe 2002). By the time this overview is printed, there may have been more changes in the classification because of the rapidly accumulating evidence supporting new hypotheses.

These rapid changes are a result of intensified study of the family groups using both traditional morphological evidence combined …

Drosophila Rnase Z Processes Mitochondrial And Nuclear Pre-Trna 3′ Ends In Vivo, Edward B. Dubrovsky, Veronica A. Dubrovskaya, Louis Levinger, Steffen Schiffer, Anita Marchfelder Nov 2004

Drosophila Rnase Z Processes Mitochondrial And Nuclear Pre-Trna 3′ Ends In Vivo, Edward B. Dubrovsky, Veronica A. Dubrovskaya, Louis Levinger, Steffen Schiffer, Anita Marchfelder

Dartmouth Scholarship

Although correct tRNA 3′ ends are crucial for protein biosynthesis, generation of mature tRNA 3′ ends in eukaryotes is poorly understood and has so far only been investigated in vitro. We report here for the first time that eukaryotic tRNA 3′ end maturation is catalysed by the endonuclease RNase Z in vivo. Silencing of the JhI‐1 gene (RNase Z homolog) in vivo with RNAi in Drosophila S2 cultured cells causes accumulation of nuclear and mitochondrial pre‐tRNAs, suggesting that JhI‐1 encodes both forms of the tRNA 3′ endonuclease RNase Z, and establishing its biological role in endonucleolytic tRNA 3′ …

Analysis Of Process Controls In Land Surface Hydrological Cycle Over The Continental United States, Tajdarul Hassan Syed, Venkataraman Lakshmi, Evan Paleologos, Dag Lohmann, Kenneth Mitchell, James S. Famiglietti

Faculty Publications

The paper uses two years (1997–1999) of data from the North American Land Data Assimilation System at National Centers for Environmental Prediction to analyze the variability of physical variables contributing to the hydrological cycle over the conterminous United States. The five hydrological variables considered in this study are precipitation, top layer soil moisture (0–10 cm), total soil moisture (0–200 cm), runoff, and potential evaporation. There are two specific analyses carried out in this paper. In the first case the principal components of the hydrological cycle are examined with respect to the loadings of the individual variables. This helps to ascertain …

The Many Faces Of The Economic Substance's Two-Prong Test: Time For Reconciliation?, Yoram Keinan Nov 2004

The Many Faces Of The Economic Substance's Two-Prong Test: Time For Reconciliation?, Yoram Keinan

ExpressO

The fall of 2004 saw the occurrence of several important developments in relation to the ongoing debate on the application of the economic substance doctrine. It started with the issuance of the opinion in Long Term Capital Holding v. United States in the end of August, a case in which a District Court held that a transaction involving the contribution of stock with a built-in loss to a partnership lacked economic substance and had been entered into without any business purpose other than tax avoidance. The court upheld penalties assessed by the IRS despite the taxpayer’s argument that it obtained …

Articles

We use HST/ACS imaging of 100 early-type galaxies in the ACS Virgo Cluster Survey to investigate the nature of diffuse star clusters (DSCs). Compared to globular clusters (GCs), these star clusters have moderately low luminosities (MV > −8) and a broad distribution of sizes (3 < rh < 30 pc), but they are principally characterized by their low mean surface brightnesses which can be more than three magnitudes fainter than a typical GC (µg > 20 mag arcsec−2). The median colors of diffuse star cluster systems are red, 1.1 < g − z < 1.6, which is redder than metal-rich GCs and often as red as the galaxy itself. Most DSC systems thus have mean ages older than 5 Gyr or else have super-solar metallicities implying that diffuse star clusters are likely to be long-lived, surviving for significant fraction of a Hubble time. We find that 12 galaxies in our sample contain a significant excess of diffuse star cluster candidates. Nine of them are morphologically classified as lenticulars (S0s), and five of them visibly contain dust. We also find a substantial population of DSCs in the halo of the giant elliptical M49, associated with the companion galaxy VCC 1199. Most DSC systems appear to be both aligned with the galaxy light and associated with galactic disks, but at the same time many lenticular galaxies do not host substantial DSC populations, and environment and clustercentric radius do not appear to be good predictors of their existence. Diffuse star clusters in our sample share similar characteristics to those identified in other nearby lenticular, spiral, and dwarf galaxies. Unlike luminous GCs, whose sizes are constant with luminiosity, DSCs are bounded at the bright end by an envelope of nearly constant surface brightness. We suggest that populations of diffuse star clusters preferentially form, survive, and coevolve with galactic disks. Their properties are broadly consistent with those of merged star cluster complexes, and we note that despite being 3–5 magnitudes brighter than DSCs, ultra-compact dwarfs have similar surface brightnesses. The closest Galactic analogs to the DSCs are the old open clusters. We suggest that if a diffuse star cluster population did exist in the disk of the Milky Way, it would be very difficult to find.

Alu Element Mutation Spectra: Molecular Clocks And The Effect Of Dna Methylation, Jinchuan Xing, Dale J. Hedges, Kyudong Han, Hui Wang, Richard Cordaux, Mark A. Batzer

In primate genomes more than 40% of CpG islands are found within repetitive elements. With more than one million copies in the human genome, the Alu family of retrotransposons represents the most successful short interspersed element (SINE) in primates and CpG dinucleotides make up about 20% of Alu sequences. It is generally thought that CpG dinucleotides mutate approximately ten times faster than other dinucleotides due to cytosine methylation and the subsequent deamination and conversion of C→T. However, the disparity of Alu subfamily age estimations based upon CpG or non-CpG substitution density indicates a more complex relationship between CpG and non-CpG …

Comparison Of Pakistani Economy With Asean Economies, Ishrat Husain Dr. Nov 2004

Comparison Of Pakistani Economy With Asean Economies, Ishrat Husain Dr.

Faculty Research - Talks, Speeches, & Discourse

It is now widely accepted that the Asian economies have done extremely well in terms of economic growth and poverty reduction during the last three to four decades or so despite the crisis of 1997. Three decades ago, China was among the World’s poorest countries with 80 percent of the population having incomes less than US$1 per day and only a third of all adults able to read or write. By 2000 the proportion of the poor (income less than US$1 per day) had declined to around 16 percent. Korea and Pakistan had identical per capita incomes of $100 in …

Search For Doubly Charged Higgs Bosons Decaying To Dileptons In Pp̅ Collisions At √S =1:96 Tev, Darin Acosta, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

We present the results of a search for doubly charged Higgs bosons (H±±) decaying to dileptons (ll′ ) using ≈240 pb-1 of pp̅ collision data collected by the CDF II experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron. In our search region, given by same-sign ll′ mass mll′ >80 GeV/c2 (100 GeV/c2 for ee channel), we observe no evidence for H±± production. We set limits on σ (pp̅→ H++H--→l+l+l-l-) as a function of the mass of the H±± …
