Cetacean Brain Evolution: Multiplication Generates Complexity, Lori Marino
Cetacean Brain Evolution: Multiplication Generates Complexity, Lori Marino
Anatomy Collection
Over the past 55-60 million years cetacean (dolphin, whale, and porpoise) brains have become hyperexpanded so that modern cetacean encephalization levels are second only to modern humans. At the same time, brain expansion proceeded along very different lines than in other large-brained mammals so that substantial differences between modern cetacean brains and other mammalian brains exist at every level of brain organization. Perhaps the most profound difference between cetacean and other mammalian brains is in the architecture of the neocortex. Cetaceans possess a unique underlying neocortical organizational scheme that is particularly intriguing in light of the fact that cetaceans exhibit …

Scaling A Dataflow Testing Methodology To The Multiparadigm World Of Commercial Spreadsheets, Marc Randall Fisher Ii, Gregg Rothermel, Tyler Creelan, Margaret Burnett
School of Computing: Technical Reports
Spreadsheet languages are widely used by end users to perform a broad range of important tasks. Evidence shows, however, that spreadsheets often contain faults. Thus, in prior work we presented a dataflow testing methodology for use with spreadsheets, that provides feedback about the coverage of cells in spreadsheets via visual devices. Studies have shown that this methodology, which we call WYSIWYT (What You See Is What You Test), can be used cost-effectively by end-user programmers. To date, however, the methodology has been investigated across a limited set of spreadsheet language features. Commercial spreadsheet environments are multiparadigm languages, utilizing features often …
Daubechies And Quadratic B-Spline Wavelets For Automated Early Diagnosis Of Alzheimer's Disease, Genevieve Jacques
Daubechies And Quadratic B-Spline Wavelets For Automated Early Diagnosis Of Alzheimer's Disease, Genevieve Jacques
Theses and Dissertations
Alzheimer's disease is a neurological disorder characterized by nerve degeneration and neuronal death. The diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease at an early stage is a major concern due to the lack of a standard and effective diagnosis procedure available to community healthcare providers, as well as the increasing numbers of the elderly population affected. Clinical evaluation, the standard AD diagnostic procedure conducted at major university hospitals and research clinics, achieves, on average, a positive predictive value of 93%, with a sensitivity of 83%, specificity of 55% and an overall accuracy of 75%. An effective and objective tool for early diagnosis of …
Automated Evaluation Of Radiodensities In A Digitized Mammogram Database Using Local Contrast Estimation, Min Taek Kim
Automated Evaluation Of Radiodensities In A Digitized Mammogram Database Using Local Contrast Estimation, Min Taek Kim
Theses and Dissertations
Mammographic radiodensity is one of the strongest risk factors for developing breast cancer and there exists an urgent need to develop automated methods for predicting this marker. Previous attempts for automatically identifying and quantifying radiodense tissue in digitized mammograms have fallen short of the ideal. Many algorithms require significant heuristic parameters to be evaluated and set for predicting radiodensity. Many others have not demonstrated the efficacy of their techniques with a sufficient large and diverse patient database. This thesis has attempted to address both of these drawbacks in previous work. Novel automated digital image processing algorithms are proposed that have …
Vlsi Implementation Of An Efficient Method For The Computation Of Line Spectral Frequencies, David L. Reynolds
Vlsi Implementation Of An Efficient Method For The Computation Of Line Spectral Frequencies, David L. Reynolds
Theses and Dissertations
In speech coding applications using linear predictive techniques, the computation of line spectral frequencies (LSFs) from the predictor coefficients is an extremely computationally intensive task. The unique properties of the symmetric and antisymmetric polynomial roots limit the region which must be searched, however it is still necessary to perform a root-finding algorithm on a high-order polynomial.
Certain algorithms have been developed to reduce the complexity of the root finding exercise. One such algorithm, developed by Ramachandran and Kabal, takes advantage of certain properties of the symmetric and antisymmetric polynomials to map the upper portion of the unit circle onto the …
Three-Dimensional Shape Characterization For Particle Aggregates Using Multiple Projective Representations, Jonathan Paul Corriveau
Three-Dimensional Shape Characterization For Particle Aggregates Using Multiple Projective Representations, Jonathan Paul Corriveau
Theses and Dissertations
Shape descriptors are used extensively in computer vision/automated recognition applications such as fingerprint matching, robotics, character recognition, etc. The conventional two-dimensional shape descriptors used in these applications do not readily lend themselves to compact representations in three dimensions. The situation is even more challenging when one attempts to numerically describe the three-dimensional shapes of a mixture of objects such as in an aggregate mix.
The goal of this study is the design, development and validation of automated image processing algorithms that can estimate three-dimensional shape-descriptors for particle aggregates. The thesis demonstrates that a single set of numbers representing a composite …

Application Of Time-Series Analyses To The Hydrological Functioning Of An Alpine Karstic System: The Case Of Bange-L’Eau-Morte, T. Mathevet, M. L. Lepiller, A. Mangin
KIP Articles
This paper analyses the hydrological functioning of the Bange-L’Eau-Morte karstic system using classical and original techniques, recession curves, correlation and spectral analyses, noise analysis and wavelet analyses. The main characteristics that can be deduced are the recession coefficients, the dynamic volume of storage, the response time of the system, the quickflow and baseflow components and the snowmelt characteristics. The non-stationary and timescale-dependent behaviour of the system is studied and particular features of the runoff are shown. The step-by-step use of these different techniques provides a general methodology applicable to different karstic systems to provide quantifiable and objective criteria for differentiation …

A Comparison Between The Patellofemoral Function Scale And The Lequesne Index In Patients With Knee Osteoarthritis, Wei-Jang Yen, Tzy-Fang Chu, Ta-Shen Kuan, Mao-Huan Hung, Chang-Zern Hong
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Numerous therapeutic approaches are currently used to treat knee osteoarthritis. The relative efficacy of these approaches to the treatment of individual knees with osteoarthritis is not well understood. The main reason is that therapeutic outcome studies in osteoarthritis had been impeded by the lack of an objective, reproducible method for grading osteoarthritis of individual knee in order to compare the severity of the osteoarthritis between the two different sides. The Lequesne index has been used in most therapeutic trials on osteoarthritis of weight bearing joints. However, the ability of the Lequesne index to assess the status of individual knees with …

Sustained Pelvic Traction With Prone Position In The Treatment Of Sciatica, Baii-Jia Yang, Si-Huei Lee, Yun-Sheng Chen
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Sciatica due to herniated disc or degenerative disc disease is one of the most common problems in modern society. Management of the pain and disability with supine intermittent or sustained pelvic traction has long been used. However, some patients with severe back and referred leg pain cannot tolerate traction in a supine position. In this study, we applied sustained prone position pelvic traction to 14 patients with severe back and referred leg pain who were unable to tolerate supine position traction. Magnetic resonance imaging and electromyography studies revealed positive findings. Sustained prone position pelvic traction was set with one third …

Ankylosing Spondylitis Complicating With Spinal Epidural Hematoma: A Casereport, Hui-Lin Lin, Yen-Ho Wang, Huey-Wen Liang, Chi-Kai Chang
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is an inflammatory disease that most commonly affects vertebral and pelvic joints. It is characterized by ossification of all spinal ligaments, articular joints, and intervertebral discs in association with osteoporosis of the vertebral bodies, thus, rendering the spine prone to trauma, which, even if minimal, may cause serious neurologic complications.Spinal epidural hematoma (SEH) is a rare clinical condition. Etiologically, it may be traumatic or nontraumatic. Spontaneous SEHs occur more frequently than traumatic SEHs. Although rare, posttraumatic SEH occurs frequently in patients with AS. We report the case of a 71-year-old male patient who suffered from AS for …

Anti-Myelin-Associated Glycoprotein Antibody Neuropathy: A Casereport, Hsin-I Wu, Cheng-Liang Chou, Shun-Ping Cheng, Tcho-Jen Liu, Rai-Chi Chan
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Polyneuropathy is common in the field of rehabilitation medicine. Its symptoms include sensory impairment in the distal limbs, ataxia, tremor, and pinch weakness. Electrophysiology will show multiple neuropathies with distal involvement first. Sensory nerve impairment usually appears earlier than motor nerve impairment. In severe cases, muscle atrophy can also be seen.Due to the multiple etiologies of polyneuropathy, the treatments vary. We report a rare case of anti-MAG neuropathy. The patient is a 88-year-old retired veteran, who complained of bilateral lower leg weakness and numbness in the distal part of all limbs. He visited the neurology OPD and was diagnosed with …

Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing In Patients With Transmyocardial Laser Revascularization, Chen-Liang Chou, Po-Jung Pan, Wen-Tung Yang, Su-Ying Hung, Tcho-Jen Liu, Shian-Ting Lai, Li-Yun Kuo
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
For patients with symptomatic end-stage coronary artery disease, who have had a poor response to percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty or coronary artery bypass grafting, transmyocardial revascularization (TMR) seems to be an alternative to relieve disabling ischemic symptoms. The purpose of this study was to evaluate, by cardiopulmonary exercise testing, the cardiopulmonary capacity after TMR.Ten patients were enrolled in the study. None of them showed significant exacerbation in pulmonary function after TMR. Their average aerobic capacity was about 5MET5; a lower anaerobic threshold and high functional aerobic impairment revealed an insufficient cardiopulmonary capacity. The result of testing showed 1 normal(10%),5 abnormal(50%) …

Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program For A Patient With Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Complicated With Acute Infection, Lobar Atelectasis And Severely Restrictive Ventilatory Impairment: A Casereport, Ya-Wen Hsu, Jue-Long Wang, Jin-Shen Yang, Ko-Long Lin
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
An exact identification among the subsets of pulmonary lupus is important in planning efficacious therapy. Asymptomatic pulmonary lupus needs no specific treatment, while prompt and aggressive treatment is mandatory for the potential life-threatening pulmonary version. We present a case of systemic lupus erythematosus(SLE)with lobar atelectasis and severely restricted lung impairment and illustrate how a pulmonary rehabilitation program aided therapy during the acute infectious episode. An individualized pulmonary rehabilitation program for SLE patients compromised with chest distress may thus be a prudent course of action.

Acute Simultaneous Multiple Infarctions In One Cerebral Hemisphere: A Casereport, Ting-I Han, Mu-Jung Kao, Der-Yang Chou, Pey-Yu Yang
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Acute ischemic stroke is well known to be a single event. However, multiple simultaneous acute strokes involving more than one vascular territory are less studied. Large-artery disease of corresponding vessels and cardioembolism are thought to be the most important risk factors for multiple simultaneous infarctions. Diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI), which successfully discriminats acute from chronic infarct, is particularly useful in patients with multiple infarcts in more than one territory. The most common combinations of simultaneous multiple infarction in one cerebral hemisphere involve the territories of the anterior superficial middle cerebral artery (MCA) plus the posterior superficial MCA, and the territories of …

Lower-Leg Compartment Syndrome And Ischemic Spinal Cord With Lumbosacral Plexopathy After Aortic Dissection: A Casereport, Wen-Hsuan Hou, Huey-Wen Liang, Yen-Ho Wang, Fang-Yue Lin
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Aortic valve replacement (AVR) is a common surgical procedure to treat severe valvular heart disease. Major complications of AVR include perioperative myocardial infarction, thromboemboli, hemorrhage, prosthetic endocarditis, aortic dissection, prosthetic dehiscence, and prosthetic dysfunction. Ischemic myeloradiculopathy due to aortic dissection after AVR is another complication documented in the medical literature, but the combination of lower-extremity compartment syndrome and ischemic myeloradiculopathy is rarely reported. We describe the clinical course and recovery of a 57-year-old man with this unusual combination and discuss the proper management to reduce long-term disability.

Location And Type Of Vertebral Compression Fractures In Aged Women With Acute Back Pain, Ching-Kai Lin, Ta-Sen Wei, Po-Jen Yang
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
In many cases acute back pain in aged women is caused by vertebral compression fractures. Although the indirect mortality rate among these patients is not as high as in those with hip fractures, the effect of acute back pain on patients’ daily lives and social activities should not be underestimated. This study was performed to understand the distribution of the location and type of vertebral compression fractures in this particular group of women and their relations to bone mineral density. This retrospective study consisted of medical record and X-ray examinations of 126 women patients who complained of acute back pain, were …
