Discrete-Time Fractional Differentiation From Integer Derivatives, Hany Farid

Computer Science Technical Reports

Discrete-time fractional derivative filters (1-D and 2-D) are shown to be well approximated from a small set of integer derivatives. A fractional derivative of arbitrary order (and, in 2-D, of arbitrary orientation) can therefore be efficiently computed from a linear combination of integer derivatives of the underlying signal or image.

Diese Schrift dient dem Bericht uber die Hauptaspekte meiner Forschertatigkeit an der TU Dresden seit der Promotion. In diesen dreieinhalb Jahren war es mein Bestreben, selbststandig aktuelle, theoretisch fundierte und anwendungsbezogene Fragestellungen zu entwickeln und zu verfolgen.

Naturgemaß war meine Forschung in dieser Zeit vor allem zu Anfang sehr explorativ. Meine Suche konzentrierte sich dabei auf das Herausarbeiten theoretischer Zusammenhange. Ob ich einen Ansatz dann weiterverfolgte entschied sich anschließend aufgrund einer Evaluation aus angewandter Sicht.

A Reconstruction Of Moreau Chambers' 1937 Excavation Of A Chickasaw Village In Northeastern Mississippi, Ladonna F. Brown

An analysis of the archival data relating to the earliest professional investigation of a Chickasaw village site was done in order to reconstruct the excavation and place the artifacts in their appropriate context. A progress report written near the beginning of the project, excavation photographs with annotations and catalogue entries for the primary documentation were available to begin reconstruction. The original field notes have been lost but there were a limited amount of data that were abstracted from them by an earlier researcher. Juju And Justice At The Movies: Vigilantes In Nigerian Popular Videos, John C. Mccall

This article examines the rise of vigilantism in southeastern Nigeria. Two opposing discourses on Nigerian vigilantism are examined. The first is characterized by the valorization of vigilantes as heroes in popular Nigerian video movies. The second is represented by a recent Human Rights Watch (HRW) report denouncing the vigilantes as criminals. My research utilizes ethnographic research to contextualize the video movies as a means toward understanding the ideological gap between these discourses. A close analysis of the Issakaba video series reveals a subtle treatment of the vigilante phenomenon designed to appeal to an indigenous perspective that is cognizant of the …

The increasing uses of FRP materials for the strengthening and upgrade of buildings has motivated the international engineering community to produce guidelines for the proper design, handling and installation of the externally bonded FRP systems. Thus, independent efforts coordinated by different organizations such as the Japan Building Disaster Prevention Association (JBDPA) and the American Concrete Institute (ACI) have led to implementing appropriate provisions. the JBDPA guidelines mainly focus on seismic retrofitting of structural elements, which implies the strengthening for shear of deficient structural elements. The Influence of Trait Personality and Organizational Commitment on Organizational Citizenship Behavior. Team effectivity is determined by it’s members ability to communicate, collaborate, share information, and tolerate differences among them. All the abilities are examples of organizational citizenship behavior (OCB). The purpose of this research is to investigate antecedents of OCB on employees in a process industry in Indonesia. The result showed the significant effects of trait personality and organizational commitment on OCB in Indonesia.

Vortices In Spatially Inhomogeneous Superfluids, Daniel E. Sheehy, Leo Radzihovsky

Vortices in a radially inhomogeneous superfluid, as realized by a trapped degenerate Bose gas in a uniaxially symmetric potential was analyzed. It was found that in contrast to a homogeneous superfluid, an off-axis vortex corresponds to an anisotropic superflow whose profile strongly depends on the distance to the trap axis. The minimum-energy vortex density was computed in the complementary regime of a finite prescribed rotation, showing that in the rapid-rotation limit it is extremely uniform, despite a strongly inhomogeneous Thomas-Fermi condensate density. We report on the optical spectroscopy of the eclipsing halo low-mass X-ray binary 2S 0921 - 630, which reveals the absorption-line radial velocity curve of the K0 III secondary star with a semiamplitude K2 = 92.89 ± 3.84 km s-1, a systemic velocity γ = 34.9 ± 3. 3 km s-1, and an orbital period Porb of 9.0035 ± 0.0029 days (1 σ). Given the quality of the data, we find no evidence for the effects of X-ray irradiation. Using the previously determined rotational broadening of the mass donor and applying conservative limits on the orbital inclination, we constrain the …

The intuitive classical space-time picture breaks down in quantum gravity, which makes a comparison and the development of semiclassical techniques quite complicated. Using ingredients of the group averaging method to solve constraints one can nevertheless introduce a classical coordinate time into the quantum theory, and use it to investigate the way a semiclassical continuous description emerges from discrete quantum evolution. Applying this technique to test effective classical equations of loop cosmology and their implications for inflation and bounces, we show that the effective semiclassical theory is in good agreement with the quantum description even at short scales.

Ultraviolet Extinction Properties In The Milky Way, Lynne A. Valencic, Geoffrey C. Clayton, Karl D. Gordon

We have assembled a homogeneous database of 417 ultraviolet (UV) extinction curves for reddened sight lines having International Ultraviolet Explorer spectra. We have combined these with optical and Two Micron All Sky Survey photometry, allowing estimates of the ratio of total-to-selective extinction, RV, for the entire sample. Fitzpatrick-Massa (FM) parameters have also been found for the entire sample. This is the largest study of parameterized UV extinction curves yet published, and it covers a wide range of environments, from dense molecular clouds to the diffuse interstellar medium, with extinctions AV ranging from 0.50 to 4.80. Type II inositol polyphosphate 5-phosphatases (5PTases) in yeast and animals have been known to regulate the level of phosphoinositides and thereby influence various cellular activities, such as vesicle trafficking and actin organization. In plants, little is known about the phosphatases involved in hydrolysis of phosphoinositides, and roles of type II 5PTases in plant cellular functions have not yet been characterized. In this study, we demonstrate that the FRAGILE FIBER3 (FRA3) gene of Arabidopsis thaliana, which encodes a type II 5PTase, plays an essential role in the secondary wall synthesis in fiber cells and xylem vessels. The magnetic phase transitions in the FeMnP_1-xAs_x compounds with x= 0.25, 0.35, 0.45, 0.50, and 0.55, have been studied by iron-57 Mössbauer spectroscopy. The ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic spectra have been analyzed with a model that takes into account the random distribution of the P and As near-neighbor anions of a given iron site. This distribution is a binomial distribution of the contributions to the spectra of each iron with n As near neighbors. A magnetostriction model has been used to characterize the temperature induced paramagnetic to ferromagnetic first-order phase transition and order parameters, η_F=2.6, 2.3, …

Colonisation in Australia entailed the establishment of legal institutions, but very often lagging the extension of the boundaries of settlement. As a common-law institution of ancient lineage the inquest was an important means of exploring reasons for unexplained deaths, even leading to prosecutions. Yet the protections afforded by rule of law institutions were nugatory where they affected Aboriginal people in conflict with settler society, as shown in this study of the many inquiries in which deaths were attributed to the actions of the police in colonial Queensland.

The incoherent inelastic part of the resonance fluorescence spectrum of a laser-driven atom is known as the Mollow spectrum [B. R. Mollow, Phys. Rev. 188, 1969 (1969)]. Starting from this level of description, we discuss theoretical foundations of high-precision spectroscopy using the resonance fluorescence light of strongly laser-driven atoms. Specifically, we evaluate the leading relativistic and radiative corrections to the Mollow spectrum, up to the relative orders of ( Z α )² and α ( Z α )² , respectively, and Bloch-Siegert shifts as well as stimulated radiative corrections involving off-resonant virtual states.
