Applying Intermediate Microeconomics To Terrorism, Charles Anderton, John Carter Dec 2004

Applying Intermediate Microeconomics To Terrorism, Charles Anderton, John Carter

Economics Department Working Papers

The authors show how microeconomic concepts and principles are applicable to the study of terrorism. The utility maximization model provides insights into both terrorist resource allocation choices and government counterterrorism efforts, while basic game theory helps characterize the strategic interdependencies among terrorists and governments.

Evaluation Of The Biological Sampling Kit (Biskit) For Large-Area Surface Sampling, Mark P. Buttner, Patrica Cruz, Linda Stetzenbach, Amy Klima-Comba Dec 2004

Evaluation Of The Biological Sampling Kit (Biskit) For Large-Area Surface Sampling, Mark P. Buttner, Patrica Cruz, Linda Stetzenbach, Amy Klima-Comba

Environmental & Global Health Faculty Research

Current surface sampling methods for microbial contaminants are designed to sample small areas and utilize culture analysis. The total number of microbes recovered is low because a small area is sampled, making detection of a potential pathogen more difficult. Furthermore, sampling of small areas requires a greater number of samples to be collected, which delays the reporting of results, taxes laboratory resources and staffing, and increases analysis costs. A new biological surface sampling method, the Biological Sampling Kit (BiSKit), designed to sample large areas and to be compatible with testing with a variety of technologies, including PCR and immunoassay, was …

Hybrid Or Counterpoise? A Study Of Transitional Trebuchets, Michael J. Basista Dec 2004

Hybrid Or Counterpoise? A Study Of Transitional Trebuchets, Michael J. Basista

Masters Theses

This study investigates the engineering and use of a proposed type of trebuchet in the Middle Ages. A study by a prominent historian has suggested the existence of a type of siege weapon that made use of both human and gravitational forces to fire its projectile. My research will investigate this claim by examining select sources, reviewing the engineering principles involved, and determining the viability of such a machine.

After dealing with this theory I will offer my own new interpretation made from the sources. This interpretation will center on the application of ancient technology to make trebuchets more efficient. …

Castles In The Crusader Kingdom Of Valencia, 1257-1276, Marius Nielsen Dec 2004

Castles In The Crusader Kingdom Of Valencia, 1257-1276, Marius Nielsen

Masters Theses

For my thesis I proposed to study the registered charters of James I (1208-1276), King of Aragon, to examine how castles were distributed and utilized in the Crusader Kingdom of Valencia for the period 1257-1276. A little over two thousand register charters were issued for Valencia during this period. Around 250 of the two thousand charters mention castles indicating the importance of castles in the administration of the Crusader Kingdom of Valencia. Although there are many works on Western European castles the majority focus on castles in France, Britain and the Crusader States in the Middle East and rely on …

Steps To A Political Ecology Of Amazonia, Steven L. Rubenstein Dec 2004

Steps To A Political Ecology Of Amazonia, Steven L. Rubenstein

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

Many recent studies of Amazonia have documented the ways in which agents of the state or capital seek to colonize not only indigenous land and labor, but indigenous desires as well.  This colonization of the third kind has disastrous consequences: recently, William Fisher asked, “Why ... did it seem that Xikrin would sell their grandchildren’s environmental birthright just at the moment when reservations were finally being demarcated and boundaries guaranteed for generations to come?”  Here I argue that this sort of question must become one of the central concerns of Amazonian ethnology.   Drawing on work by Fisher and others, I …

Lumbee Origins: The Weyanoke-Kearsey Connection, J. Cedric Woods Dec 2004

Lumbee Origins: The Weyanoke-Kearsey Connection, J. Cedric Woods

Southern Anthropologist

To determine the historic Virginia tribe or tribes from which the Lumbee may be descended, I have decided to search the records of North Carolina and Virginia and see where surnames linked to the Lumbee in the eighteenth, nineteenth, and early twentieth centuries appear. My goal is to see which, if any, have documented ties to specific Virginia Indian communities.

Sounds Of Survival: Language Loss, Retention, And Restructuring Among American Indian Peoples In The Southeast, Clare Dannenberg Dec 2004

Sounds Of Survival: Language Loss, Retention, And Restructuring Among American Indian Peoples In The Southeast, Clare Dannenberg

Southern Anthropologist

This paper investigates indigenous language loss in the Southeastern United States, involving the Eastern Cherokee, Occaneechi, Chickahominy, Haliwa-Saponi, Nansemond, Pamunkey, Catawba, the Monacan tribes, and particularly considers the Lumbee. As will be evident, the resiliency of Native peoples is symbolically manifested in cases like the Lumbee, where ancestral languages have been lost or simply forgotten.

Analysis Of Hostile Network Reconnaissance To Anticipate And Mitigate Network Attacks, Luis Angel Rivera Dec 2004

Analysis Of Hostile Network Reconnaissance To Anticipate And Mitigate Network Attacks, Luis Angel Rivera

Theses and Dissertations

Network security systems today such as current intrusion detection systems, intrusion prevention systems and firewalls are good at reacting to attacks as they occur or shortly after they occur. Current security systems lack the ability to identify and detect the activity that usually precedes an attack. This activity is known as network reconnaissance. In this thesis we have developed a technique that can assist current security systems to detect hostile network reconnaissance to anticipate and mitigate network attacks.

Deception 101--Primer On Deception, Joseph W. Caddell Dr. Dec 2004

Deception 101--Primer On Deception, Joseph W. Caddell Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

The author reviews the basic concepts related to "deception." Dr. Joseph Caddell defines terms, provides historical examples, and discusses problems associated with deception. He provides a general overview, a "primer" which is not directed at those who already possess a working knowledge of deception operations. Nevertheless, given the complex and everchanging nature of deception in the political-military environment, it may serve as a useful reminder of the basic assumptions and methods concerning the subject.

You Were Hired To Teach! Ideological Struggle,Education, And Teacher Burnout At The New Prison For Women, Randall L. Wright Dec 2004

You Were Hired To Teach! Ideological Struggle,Education, And Teacher Burnout At The New Prison For Women, Randall L. Wright

The Qualitative Report

Critical theorists consider schools as sites of ideological struggle. The following is an account of Suzettes (pseudonym) attempts to define the educational practices in a women’s prison according to the democratic principles suggested in the Task Force Report on Federally Sentenced Women: Creating Choices, (Correctional Service of Canada, 1990). This report led to the construction of five new prisons for women across Canada. Suzettes case illustrates how ideological struggles are experienced personally, and how they contribute to her burnout disillusionment and resignation. Habermass critical research program and his concept of system and lifeworld undergirds this interpretation of this teachers resistance …

Sharing Sovereignty: Non-State Associations And The Limits Of State Power, Franklin G. Snyder Dec 2004

Sharing Sovereignty: Non-State Associations And The Limits Of State Power, Franklin G. Snyder

Faculty Scholarship

The subject of mediating associations and voluntary associations have received much attention in recent years. Both conservative and liberal scholars have invoked the idea that certain institutions that fall somewhere on the spectrum between the State and the Individual play a significant role in society and that they therefore ought to be protected and even cultivated. But much of this work proceeds from a flawed premise, and leads to an instrumental view of these non-State associations that requires that these institutions be justified based on their social utility. This view means that the utility of any given institution usually seems …

Applications Of Power Electronics-Based Systems In Vehicular Technology: State-Of-The-Art And Future Trends, R. Jayabalan, Babak Fahimi, A. Koenig, Steven Pekarek Nov 2004

Applications Of Power Electronics-Based Systems In Vehicular Technology: State-Of-The-Art And Future Trends, R. Jayabalan, Babak Fahimi, A. Koenig, Steven Pekarek

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Power electronics-Based systems and components have been increasingly used in land, air, and sea vehicles over the past decade. This has turned the vehicular products into a primary market for power electronics applications. Moreover, the existing trend in more electrification of the vehicles represents an even bigger potential for an increase in the existing demand. Although the primary incentive for introduction of multi-converter systems into vehicular technologies was to enhance fuel economy and environmental issues associated with vehicles; today, improvement of fault tolerance, cost, and compactness have boosted the motivation for development of the more electric vehicles. the use of …

Strange Manifestations Of Three-Dimensional Intelligence In The Digital Era., Martin John Richardson, Steven Brown Nov 2004

Strange Manifestations Of Three-Dimensional Intelligence In The Digital Era., Martin John Richardson, Steven Brown

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Digital holography is arguably the most advanced form of visual recording to date. But are holograms "mere" recordings of objective visual reality or creative artefacts capable of expression, interpretation and deception? The same question was asked of photography in the early 19th century. Dismissed originally by artists as a mechanical recording medium, it became in the hands of pioneers such as Bresson and Brandt a subtle artistic tool capable of the most delicate expression and artful deception. Skilfully selective framing of the image, manipulation of objects and lighting in the scene can transform the banal into the dramatic or reduce …

Interpreting Graphic Design: Cultural Imaginaries And Social Productions., Raymond Donovan, Leong K Chan Nov 2004

Interpreting Graphic Design: Cultural Imaginaries And Social Productions., Raymond Donovan, Leong K Chan

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Graphic design influences and shapes the production and interpretation of cultural information and visual knowledge. The Australian Socio-Graphic AIDS Project (AGAP) locates graphic design as a social process in the production of epidemic knowledge, applying a textual-visual analysis to the images and messages of public health prevention campaigns, including brochures, posters and videos. It documents the influence of government policies and community-sector ideologies in the formulation of safer sex campaigns: how campaigns shape public knowledge of the epidemic; how graphic images generate social meanings about the epidemic; and how cultural responses influence designers in a morally charged arena. The research …

Non-State Actors In Sri Lanka, Cisr Jmu Nov 2004

Non-State Actors In Sri Lanka, Cisr Jmu

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

What happens when an irresistible force hits an immovable object? Something gives. Or does it? In the war-torn country of Sri Lanka, there remains a constant clash between the country's government and non-state actor (NSA) groups that terrorize the region and its people. The chief NSA that opposes the government is the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), an insurgency group whose goal is to form an independent state for the 3.2 million Tamil people that make up the minority ethnic community.

Non-State Actors In Colombia, Guatemala And Nicaragua, Cisr Jmu Nov 2004

Non-State Actors In Colombia, Guatemala And Nicaragua, Cisr Jmu

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

The majority of wars fought in the last 50 years have involved non-state, anti-state or stateless actors. These groups, commonly referred to as insurgents, dissidents, freedom fighters, rebel groups or guerillas, act independently from recognized governments. These non-state actors (NSAs) typically use low-tech, homemade weapons, such as landmines, improvised explosive devices (IEDs), and other small arms and light weapons to wage guerilla warfare. Civil war, economic instability and a booming illegal drug trade have resulted in a build-up of arms and have thus empowered Latin American NSAs. Due in part to growing insurgent strength, parts of Latin America has been …
