Physical And Chemical Characteristics Of Water In Selected Locations In Lake Victoria, Tanzania, M A Kishe Dec 2004

Physical And Chemical Characteristics Of Water In Selected Locations In Lake Victoria, Tanzania, M A Kishe

Tanzania Journal of Science

A study conducted during the period of March/April 2002 aimed at measuring physical and chemical parameters in Tanzanian portion of Lake Victoria. Temperature and conductivity values were homogeneous among and within the study stations. Levels of dissolved oxygen (DO) ranged from 4 - 9 mgl-1 and there was significant difference between stations (P < 0.05). Water transparency was poor (< 2 m secchi depth) and differed from one sampling station to another. Ammonium nitrogen (NH4+-N), with few exceptions, showed the highest concentrations both at the bottom and near-surface followed by total phosphates (TP), nitrate nitrogen (NO2+NO3--N), nitrite nitrogen (NO2--N) and Soluble Reactive Silicon (SRSi). Concentrations of NH4+-N, TP and SRSi were high at bottom waters and the reverse was true for NO2+NO3--N and NO2--N. Differences in nutrients and physical water parameters among sampling stations were statistically significant (P < 0.05). However, temperature and nutrient levels at studied areas were higher than that of 50 years ago and the trend reversed for DO and transparency. This indicates that Lake Victoria is receiving organic materials from the catchment area leading to the decline of water quality. Long-term efforts for rehabilitation, conservation and sustainable management of the lake are suggested.

Levels Of Pesticide Residues And Metabolites In Soil At Vikuge Farm, Kibaha District, Tanzania – A Classic Case Of Soil Contamination By Obsolete Pesticides, M A Kishimba, M J Mihale

Tanzania Journal of Science

The paper reports on the state of soil contamination by obsolete pesticides at Vikuge State Farm, Coast Region, Tanzania, where, in 1986, a 170 m3 “donation” of partially expired pesticides were stored in an open shed that eventually collapsed. Analyses of soil samples collected in 2000 from the old storage site at the farm for 80 different pesticide residues and metabolites have revealed alarmingly high concentrations of pesticide residues to qualify Vikuge as one of the most contaminated sites in the world. Most of the residues found in the soil at high concentrations were organochlorines, their concentrations being up to …

Biology Faculty Publications

The phylogenetic relationships of microhylid frogs are poorly understood. The first molecular phylogeny for continental African microhylids is presented, including representatives of all subfamilies, six of the eight genera, and the enigmatic hemisotid Hemisus. Mitochondrial 12S and 16S rRNA sequence data were analysed using parsimony, likelihood and Bayesian methods. Analyses of the data are consistent with the monophyly of all sampled subfamilies and genera. Hemisus does not nest within either brevicipitines or non-brevicipitines. It is possibly the sister group to brevicipitines, in which case brevicipitines might not be microhylids. Phrynomantis and Hoplophryne potentially group with non-African, non-brevicipitine microhylids, in …

Shaping U.S. Policy On Africa: Pillars Of A New Strategy, Johnnie Carson Sep 2004

Shaping U.S. Policy On Africa: Pillars Of A New Strategy, Johnnie Carson

Strategic Forums

In the four decades since most African states achieved independence, the continent has never been a foreign policy priority for the United States. During the early years of American engagement with Africa, Washington focused its attention on preventing communist countries from gaining major military bases or monopolistic concessions over any of the continent’s important strategic minerals. Although the United States provided large amounts of development assistance and food aid to a number of African states, most American interest and support was directed toward African countries and leaders who were regarded as Cold War allies. In those countries still struggling for …

It is the overall goal of this article to assess and evaluate concepts of universal jurisdiction and the interrelated right to a fair trial within the capsule of Prosecutor v. Niyonteze. This article analyzes the Niyonteze trial both within a framework of comparative law and against contemporary international law theories of universal jurisdiction and fair trial standards. In this article the term "due process" is subsumed into the larger concept of a fair trial. Likewise, a specific theory of universal jurisdiction is adopted. While universal jurisdiction and the right to a fair trial are often seen as exclusive areas, this …

Mathematical Simulation Of The Influence Of Volatile Ma•Rrer Cloud On Heterogeneous Ignition Of Single Coal Particles, Hassan Ratal Ambula

Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)

Asimple model has been developed to predict the heterogeneous ignition temperature for single coal particles under conditions of negligible, natural and forced convections. These conditions cause different sizes Of volatile matter cloud that surround the coal particle. The model is based on the ignition Of a single coal particle heated by irradiation from spot heaters in a cold (ambient) surrounding. Energy from the particle surface oxidation, volatile matter combustion and physical heating from the spot heaters are all included in rhe particle energv balance. General ignüion criterion is used to determine the ignition point. The agreement between the experimental and …

Importance Of Structural Fire Protection In Reinforced Concrete Buildings: A Case Study Of Ex-Nasaco Building In Dar Es Salaam, I Rubaratuka

Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)

Reinforced concrete is concrete that is internally reinforced with steel bars or mesh. This gives rhe malerial the compressive strength of concrete along wilh the tensile strength Of steel. Reinforced concrete does not perform well under fire conditions as it spalls and loses strength. Heating Causes a failure Of the bond between concrele and sleels bars and this results in reduction of strength of concrele. Strength of concrete decreases With increase in temperature and increase With time. In order to provide fire resistance to structural components/elements in buildings, it is important Io consider the type of aggregates to be used. …
