Of Parts And Wholes: Self-Similarity And Synecdoche In Science, Culture And Literature, Dirk Vanderbeke
Of Parts And Wholes: Self-Similarity And Synecdoche In Science, Culture And Literature, Dirk Vanderbeke
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
[Editors' Introduction]
The discussion here centers on how self-similarity, or parts resembling a whole, has been a recurring aspect in the most diverse fields of human thinking from antiquity to the present. Primary examples are drawn from physics, biology, cybernetics, alchemy, philosophy, myth and, of course, language and literature. The author argues that self-similar patterns are one of the persistent ways in which the human mind structures its experience and knowledge of the world, and then examines some of the questions that arise when an almost ubiquitous concept, structure or linguistic and literary phenomenon resurfaces in a new guise in …
Application Of Queuing Theory And Procedure Time Estimation In A Local Healthcare System, Galina Tsoy
Application Of Queuing Theory And Procedure Time Estimation In A Local Healthcare System, Galina Tsoy
Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations
People in the United States pay more for their basic healthcare needs than do people in any other nation in the world. When we consider that the United States is the wealthiest nation in the world, controlling the majority of the world's resources, it seems only reasonable to ask: Why should it be this way?
In an effort to address this problem, this thesis examines two possible methods of improving health care efficiency in hospitals. The thesis is thus in two parts: the first part examines resource allocation in medical units using Queuing Theory, and the second part examines a …
Letters To John Lennon: A Play In Two Acts, Stacey Isom
Letters To John Lennon: A Play In Two Acts, Stacey Isom
English Theses & Dissertations
Letters to John Lennon is a two-act play about one woman's fantasies, nightmares, and memories that expose her desperate need to feel worthy of love. On the 20th anniversary of John Lennon's death, Kay plans to go public with her identity as Lennon's illegitimate daughter. She believes this will result in her sudden rise to fame, a new peace movement, and the consummation of her love with a rock star. Several disasters keep her from her goals, the biggest of which is the arrival of Maury, who claims to be her real father. When Maury's claim seems authentic, Kay's …

Theater In The Courtroom, The Chicago Conspiracy Trial, Pnina Lahav
Theater In The Courtroom, The Chicago Conspiracy Trial, Pnina Lahav
Faculty Scholarship
The Chicago Conspiracy Trial (otherwise known as the Chicago Seven Trial) is a Rorschach test of American society in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Following the riots at the Democratic Convention in Chicago in 1968, leaders of the antiwar movement, the counterculture and the Black Panthers were put on trial for a "conspiracy to cross state lines with intent to incite a riot." The trial has been too easily dismissed as a circus, not worthy of legal attention, when in fact it does contain important legal insights. This paper suggests that the theory of the theater provides the key …
