ETSU Today [magazine]
The legislative session that concluded in the spring of 2004 brought much-needed hope and some tangible results to higher education in Tennessee. Realizing that work still must be done, we are greatly appreciative of the salary improvements that were approved for our faculty and staff. ETSU also succeeded in acquiring some $11 million in capital outlay funding to renovate the old Sherrod Library, providing critically needed space for our College of Nursing. We have the largest nursing enrollment in Tennessee, and we have plans to increase enrollment in the B.S.N. program by 50 percent, a major step in our continued …

Pain Relief Using Continuous Bupivacaine Infusion In The Paravertebral Space After Loin Incision, Ziad M. Awwad, Bashir A. Atiyat
Saudi Medical Journal
OBJECTIVE: Continuous bupivacaine paravertebral nerve block after thoracotomy has been shown to reduce postoperative pain. This study was designed to determine whether paravertebral nerve block using bupivacaine infused through a catheter placed intraoperatively, can reduce postoperative pain, and analgesia requirements after loin incision. METHODS: Thirty-four patients undergoing renal surgery through loin incision at Jordan University Hospital, Amman, Jordan, from October 2001 to March 2003, were randomized either to receive bupivacaine 0.5% or normal saline through a catheter positioned intraoperatively against the costovertebral joints in the paravertebral space. The infusions were continued until the evening of the third postoperative day. Patients …

Development And Validation Of A Facebook Relational Maintenance Measure, B. Mcewan, J. Fletcher, J. Eden, Erin M. Bryant
Human Communication and Theatre Faculty Research
This manuscript details the construction of a measure of Facebook relational maintenance behaviors. The first study generated an item pool by drawing from previous qualitative investigations and adapting an established relational maintenance scale. Participants were then invited to evaluate these items in order to establish face validity. During study two, participants were asked how often they used the behaviors represented in these items to maintain a specific friendship. Exploratory factor analysis was conducted to determine the underlying structure of these items; three latent factors emerged, social contact, response-seeking, and relational assurances. This factor structure was then assessed using confirmatory factor …

Playhouse Square Center: Economic Impact And Contribution To Northeast Ohio, Robert Sadowski, Jill Norton, Ziona Austrian, Mark Rosentraub
All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications
This study reports on the contribution made by Playhouse Square Center to Northeast Ohio. The contribution comes in various forms, which are reflected in the report’s different sections. The first uses a traditional economic model to estimate the economic impact of Playhouse Square Center. It calculates how each dollar spent by, or due to the presence of, Playhouse Square generates additional spending and jobs in the local economy. The second type of contribution is through the various educational programs and events aimed at increasing interest and involvement in the arts. Although the value of these activities is difficult to quantify, …

Mel Gibson's The Passion Of The Christ: Market Segmentation, Mass Marketing And Promotion, And The Internet, Peter A. Maresco
WCBT Faculty Publications
The pre-release publicity surrounding the Mel Gibson film, The Passion of the Christ, warrants an in-depth look at the role that market segmentation and marketing promotion, including use of the Internet, have played in the overall success of the film. As background, films commonly classified as biblical epics are referenced in order to construct a framework that will demonstrate how the promotion of this genre of film, with the exception of the Internet, has essentially changed very little over time. This paper is not a review of the film nor is it intended to be a brief course in marketing. …
