Lawrence And Garner: The Love (Or At Least Sexual Attraction) That Finally Dared Speak Its Name, Paris R. Baldacci
Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice
The article examines the legal evolution from *Bowers v. Hardwick* to Lawrence v. Texas, highlighting how the latter marked a pivotal shift in recognizing LGBTQ+ rights by emphasizing personal autonomy and dignity. It underscores the significance of narrative strategies in shaping judicial decisions, particularly in *Lawrence*, where the plaintiffs' personal stories influenced the Court's ruling.
Toward A Model Of Theatrical Curation, Lisa Scott-Murphy
Toward A Model Of Theatrical Curation, Lisa Scott-Murphy
Creative Connections Symposium @ BEAP2004 September 4, 2004
Our two main areas of investigation raise these questions: Can immersion theatre be used to expand currently available models of ‘experiential’ exhibition making in a museum context? Could such a theatrical curatorial approach be used to address contemporary debates about the relationship between the past and the present in Australian history?
Talking Arts Research With A British Accent, Lelia Green
Talking Arts Research With A British Accent, Lelia Green
Creative Connections Symposium @ BEAP2004 September 4, 2004
This paper reports upon contemporary arts research in Britain, taking as its main focus the research practices in seven Universities judged either ‘excellent’ or ‘internationally excellent’ in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) category Drama, Dance and Cinematics. Visits to academics representing research at Aberystwyth, Brighton, Bristol, Manchester, Nottingham Trent, Royal Holloway and Warwick Universities provided a range of perspectives and information that challenge the manner in which arts research is conceived and funded in Australia. This difference in research cultures partly reflects the workings of the United Kingdom’s RAE quality drivers, and the paper asks whether recent DEST policy …
Female Performances: Melodramatic Music Conventions And 'The Woman In White', Laura Vorachek
Female Performances: Melodramatic Music Conventions And 'The Woman In White', Laura Vorachek
English Faculty Publications
While the similarities between melodrama and sensation fiction are often noted, the similar use of music in each has been overlooked. Melodrama is characterized by excessive emotion, flat character types, a focus on plot at the expense of characterization and exaggerated expressions of right and wrong. As its name implies, it also relied heavily on musical accompaniment. For much of the first half of rhe nineteenth century, only the patent theatres were allowed to present drama with spoken dialogue due to grants from Charles II in 1660 giving to two royal favourites, Killigrew and Davenant, exclusive rights, which came to …

Colorization Revisited, Julie C. Van Camp
Colorization Revisited, Julie C. Van Camp
Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)
This article is both philosophical and practical in its intent. It endeavours to bring into focus an idea with an Ancient Greek lineage, poiesis, and determine whether it may revitalise our thinking about the 'making' of art. The art-making considered in this paper will concentrate exclusively on Western art and its historical and contemporary manifestations. I suggest that poiesis - that which "pro-duces or leads (a thing) into being'" - may enable practitioners in the varying art forms, and aestheticians who reflect upon them, to come to a deeper sense of how artworks work: that they realize themselves inter-dependently …

Sub-State Nationalism And International Law, Margaret Moore
Sub-State Nationalism And International Law, Margaret Moore
Michigan Journal of International Law
This Article explores the relationship between international law, defined broadly as the principles, norms, and rules governing the international order and the aspirations for collective self-government by minority national communities. It argues that there will be increasing challenges to the current international legal rules by minority nationalists, and that it is important to develop a principled response to this challenge. It also argues that the current system privileges state actors to a great extent, and that any attempt to channel self-determination claims in a more benign, non-secessionist direction needs to address the statecentric biases of the current rules.
