Minimizing Truck-Car Conflicts On Highways, Srinivas Peeta, Weimin Zhou Jan 2004

Minimizing Truck-Car Conflicts On Highways, Srinivas Peeta, Weimin Zhou

JTRP Technical Reports

Trucks represent the predominant form of domestic freight movement. Due to the substantial increase in freight truck traffic on the nation’s highways, its influence on traffic flow performance, safety, and quality of travel experience, is garnering increased attention. Several existing studies have addressed the impacts of trucks on highway traffic flow conditions and crashes. This research models the behavior of non-truck drivers vis-à-vis their interactions with trucks by associating a “discomfort level” with every non-truck driver. This discomfort of non-truck drivers in the vicinity of trucks is assumed to be affected by situational factors such as time-of-day, weather, and ambient …

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

This applied dissertation developed an entrepreneurial training seminar to fill a gap between an existing 3-hour workshop and a semester-long FastTrac™ class. The existing 3-hour workshop, required by contract between the UNF SBDC and the U.S. SBA, serves as a screening mechanism to identify potential entrepreneurs. The FastTrac™ class is designed for existing business owners and assumes significant understanding of business concepts. The new seminar will act as a bridge and be a prerequisite for the semester-long class.

The writer developed lesson plans, an instructor’s manual, a strategy for multicounty implementation using local area presentation partners, and an implementation plan. …

Implementing Hands-On Training For Social Workers Working With Psychologically Vulnerable Families, Lana J. Mcclain

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

This applied dissertation was designed to provide Child Welfare Specialists (CWS) with hands-on, home-management skills that were necessary in providing comprehensive services to the Court and Permanency Services (CAPS) clients. The CWS lacked the skills to provide clients with the necessary tools to be successful parents. The CAPS clients previously received parenting instruction that was limited to child discipline and guidance, child safety, development, and nutrition and health. The Role Of Dopamine In Motivational And Receptive Aspects Of Female Mouse Sexual Behavior, Amber Bradshaw Hodges

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

A pacing paradigm investigated the modulatory role of monoamines in the mesolimbic dopamine system on copulatory behavior in female mice. Specifically whether there is a distinction between the neural regulatory mechanisms of pacing behavior and receptive behavior was determined. Pacing measures motivational and rewarding components of copulation by the female's contacts and withdrawals from the male, while receptivity is the willingness to engage in copulations and is measured by the number of sexual stimulations received. A pacing paradigm was established and female mice were observed to pace in a similar manner, but at a lesser rate, than female rats.

Dopamine …

Sundowning refers to the exacerbation of symptoms of arousal or impairment in the late afternoon, evening, or night among older adults with dementia. Because sundowning is associated with immense burden on family caregivers and institutional nursing staff, determining its etiology remains an important goal so that appropriate interventions may be developed. The current study examined the association between sundowning and variables representing he primary etiological theories of sundowning in a sample of 20 nursing home patients with Alzheimer's disease. Specifically, theories relating sundowning to circadian rhythm disturbances, sleep disruption, and overstimulation were tested. Sundowners were found to have a later …

As important, and difficult, as it is to offer new law students clearand helpful frameworks for the interpersonalwork of lawyering, do-ing so is only part of what a clinical textbook may aspire to. In ourtextbook-in-progress, we hope to offer both frameworks and support for students' sense of the incompleteness of every framework and for their recognition of the need for careful, flexible response to each in-dividual client. Even care and flexibility by themselves are notenough, however, and every text must choose which aspects of law- yer-client relationshipsit will emphasize most. In the sections thatfol-low, we focus on lawyers' development of "connection in …

Reading Others’ Emotions: The Role Of Intuitive Judgments In Predicting Marital Satisfaction, Quality And Stability, Robert J. Waldinger, Marc S. Schulz, Stuart T. Hauser, Joseph P. Allen, Judith A. Crowell

Psychology Faculty Research and Scholarship

This study examined links between emotion expression in couple interactions and marital quality and stability. Core aspects of emotion expression in marital interactions were identified using naïve observational coding by multiple raters. Judges rated 47 marital discussions using 15 emotion descriptors. Coders’ pooled ratings yielded good reliability on four types of emotion expression: hostility, distress, empathy, and affection. These four types were linked with concurrent marital satisfaction and interviewer ratings of marital adjustment, as well as with marital stability at 5-year follow-up. The study also examined the extent to which naïve judges’ ratings of emotion expression correspond to “expert” ratings …

Speech And Strife, Robert L. Tsai Jan 2004

Speech And Strife, Robert L. Tsai

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

The essay strives for a better understanding of the myths, symbols, categories of power, and images deployed by the Supreme Court to signal how we ought to think about its authority. Taking examples from free speech jurisprudence, the essay proceeds in three steps. First, Tsai argues that the First Amendment constitutes a deep source of cultural authority for the Court. As a result, linguistic and doctrinal innovation in the free speech area have been at least as bold and imaginative as that in areas like the Commerce Clause. Second, in turning to cognitive theory, he distinguishes between formal legal argumentation …

Protecting Us From Pictures: Gender And Support For Legal Restrictions On Pornography, Elizabeth Lynne Chivers Jan 2004

Protecting Us From Pictures: Gender And Support For Legal Restrictions On Pornography, Elizabeth Lynne Chivers

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Research and debate concerning pornography has been controversial, primarily focusing on the perceived harmful effects. The current study addresses support for legal restrictions and the effect of gender on this support. Based on the internalization of gender roles, perspectives, and identities through socialization, gender is constructed differently for men and women. Because this socialization is constructed around an oppositional male-female dichotomy, men and women experience the world differently. While there have been previous research addressing gender differences, the gendered nature of attitudes merits further study. The current study is based on data collected for 451 undergraduate students at the University …

Investing The Wealth: Intentional Strategies For Psychology Training In Developing Countries, Mark R. Mcminn, Vitaliy L. Voytenko

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

The knowledge and skills of psychology can be useful in developing countries where indigenous mental health resources are sometimes scarce. Although it may be useful for psychologists to provide short-term training in developing countries, the potential for long-term change is best accomplished by investing in training students from developing countries, especially those committed to returning to their homeland after completing their training. Three “investment strategies” are suggested for training students from developing countries: faculty awareness, intentional mentoring, and facilitated launching. Challenges and implications for professional psychologists are discussed.
