Jesus And Transformation, Paul N. Anderson Jan 2004

Jesus And Transformation, Paul N. Anderson

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

Transformational leadership differs greatly from transactional leadership. Transactional leadership conditions others to think in terms of penalties and rewards, thus motivating actions and reactions according to the interests of the individual. It is self-oriented, conditioning others along the lines of desired outcomes, but, as the motivating factors are external, adherence to those values and behaviors is tied to their reinforcement. When the systems of reward diminish, so do corollary commitments. In that sense, transactional leadership is situational and reward specific.

Pioneering The Restoration Of Peace: A Narrative Of The Life And Work Of Shreen Abdul Saroor Of Sri Lanka, Donna Chung

Kroc IPJ Research and Resources

Women on the frontline of efforts to end violence and secure a just peace seldom record their experiences, activities and insights – as generally there is no time or, perhaps, they do not have formal education that would help them record their stories. The Women PeaceMakers Program is a selective program for leaders who want to document, share and build upon their unique peacemaking stories. Selected peacemakers join the IPJ for an eight-week residency.

Women PeaceMakers are paired with a Peace Writer to document in written form their story of living in conflict and building peace in their communities and …

A Conceptual Model Of Psychological Distress In Native Americans., Shari Ann Robinson Jan 2004

A Conceptual Model Of Psychological Distress In Native Americans., Shari Ann Robinson

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The aim of the current study was to utilize a structural model to examine simultaneously the relationships among socioeconomic status (SES), anxiety sensitivity, stress, psychological problems, Native American identity, cultural related anxiety, and coping. The proposed structural equation model was tested using AMOS (Analysis of Moment Structures). The social stress literature provided a theoretical framework; it suggests that SES-linked social stressors that result in higher levels of psychological disorders adversely affect people from lower SES backgrounds. Data were gathered from 150 Native American attendees at a Pow-Wow. SES was hypothesized to impact negatively on anxiety sensitivity. Anxiety sensitivity was predicted …

Educating Without Borders: The Influence Of International Cross-Cultural Experiences On Teaching With A Global Perspective In Higher Education., Nicholas A. Ciccarello

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Global issues, as well as multicultural and global education, are receiving national and international attention, not only within the educational community, but also within society at large. Global education is fast becoming the subject of a growing body of literature, and both K–12 and postsecondary schools have begun to place importance on the successful incorporation of global perspectives in education. The purpose of this study was to examine the various perceived effects of international cross-cultural experiences on the subsequent curricula and instruction of higher education faculty. This phenomenological study utilized data collection methods which included logistical data, recorded interviews, follow-up …

Parallel Structures And Binary Oppositions In Andre Gide's "L'Immoraliste" And "La Porte Etroite"., Jennifer Lawrence Jan 2004

Parallel Structures And Binary Oppositions In Andre Gide's "L'Immoraliste" And "La Porte Etroite"., Jennifer Lawrence

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Two of André Gide’s books, L’Immoraliste and La Porte étroite, exemplify the ethical struggles that defined the author’s life through the codependence of their singular message. By submitting these two intrinsically similar works to a structuralist analysis of the binary oppositions that exist between them, the relationship between good and evil becomes solidified through the structures and semiotic codes of the novels, the opposition of the protagonists, and the motifs of geography, personal relationships, nature, and religion.

The Effects Of Age, Estrogen And Environmental Enrichment On Neurogenesis, Dendritic Spine Density And Synaptogenesis In The Hippocampus., Tina Marie Sager

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Over 43 million women today are nearing or have passed menopause and 21 million more will be entering their climacteric period over the next decade. Cognitive symptoms such as poor memory and the inability to concentrate have been reported in perimenopausal and menopausal women. The goal of this study was to determine both the single and combined effects that age, estrogen and environmental enrichment have on neurogenesis, synapotgenesis, and dendritic spine density in the hippocampus region of the female rat brain. Ovariectomized, female Sprague-dawley rats were administered either estrogen replacement or a vehicle. The rats were then subjected to either …

Coaches And Sport Psychology: Factors Influencing Intentions To Use Sport Psychology Consultation., Rebecca Zakrajsek Jan 2004

Coaches And Sport Psychology: Factors Influencing Intentions To Use Sport Psychology Consultation., Rebecca Zakrajsek

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The purpose of this study was twofold. First, the Sport Psychology AttitudeRevised Coaches (SPA-RC) form, modified from the Sport Psychology Attitude-Revised Form (Martin et al., 2002), was developed for coaches and examined through exploratory factor analysis procedures. Second, a theoretical model was developed using the SPA-RC and additional variables (previous exposure and expectations of the process) hypothesized to influence coaches’ use of sport psychology consultants (SPC). A total of 374 coaches were surveyed regarding attitude, previous exposure, expectations of the process, and intentions to use SPCs. Exploratory Factor Analyses with the SPA-RC revealed a 3-factor solution (stigma tolerance, confidence in …

A Spatial-Temporal Optimization Approach To Watershed Management: Amd Treatment In The Cheat River Watershed, West Virginia., Xiaobing Zhao Jan 2004

A Spatial-Temporal Optimization Approach To Watershed Management: Amd Treatment In The Cheat River Watershed, West Virginia., Xiaobing Zhao

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Most water management studies concentrate on the inter-temporal allocation problem or, more recently, spatial dynamics—but not both. While early spatial-temporal studies focused on the allocation of water quantity, this paper presents an approach to water quality analysis that incorporates both spatial and temporal dynamics in a watershed framework. The model developed is an explicit economic watershed optimization model built upon an underlying water quality model where pollution loads are driven by pollution sources and alternative control strategies. It reflects the spatial aspects of pollution loads and treatment and the way the system reacts over time to management options and natural …

The Journey From Brown V. Board Of Education To Grutter V. Bollinger: From Racial Assimilation To Diversity, Harry T. Edwards Jan 2004

The Journey From Brown V. Board Of Education To Grutter V. Bollinger: From Racial Assimilation To Diversity, Harry T. Edwards

Michigan Law Review

Fifty years ago, in Brown v. Board of Education, the Supreme Court confronted a precise and straightforward question: "Does segregation of children in public schools solely on the basis of race, even though the physical facilities and other 'tangible' factors may be equal, deprive the children of the minority group of equal educational opportunities?" The Court's answer was precise and straightforward: "We conclude that in the field of public education the doctrine of "separate but equal" has no place. Separate educational facilities are inherently unequal. Therefore, we hold that the plaintiffs ... are, by reason of the segregation complained of, …

Professor Yale Kamisar: "Awesome", Harry T. Edwards Jan 2004

Professor Yale Kamisar: "Awesome", Harry T. Edwards

Michigan Law Review

Yale Kamisar arrived in Ann Arbor in the fall of 1965, just after I graduated from the University of Michigan Law School, so I never had him as a teacher. We were colleagues, however, for almost ten years during the 1970s when we were both members of the Michigan faculty. And we have remained good friends ever since. When the editors of the Michigan Law Review asked me if I would submit a "tribute" to Professor Kamisar commemorating his retirement from the faculty, I was happy to accept the invitation. Yale is one of my heroes in the academy - …

On Kamisar, Killing, And The Future Of Physician-Assisted Death, Norman L. Cantor Jan 2004

On Kamisar, Killing, And The Future Of Physician-Assisted Death, Norman L. Cantor

Michigan Law Review

Tens - perhaps hundreds - of thousands of trees could have been spared over the last forty-five years had opponents of physician-assisted death only been content to let Yale Kamisar be their exclusive spokesperson. Their movement would have lost no significant substance or persuasive force, for Kamisar's 1958 article - Some Non-Religious Views Against Proposed 'Mercy-Killing' Legislation - presaged the shape and content of the subsequent forty-five year debate over legalizing physician-assisted death ("PAD" ). Kamisar's article preceded by years the development of a whole jurisprudence relating to the withholding/withdrawing of life-sustaining medical treatment ("LSMT") and the administration of pain-relief …

The Illusion Of Law: The Legitimating Schemas Of Modern Policy And Corporate Law, Ronald Chen, Jon Hanson Jan 2004

The Illusion Of Law: The Legitimating Schemas Of Modern Policy And Corporate Law, Ronald Chen, Jon Hanson

Michigan Law Review

This Article is about some of the schemas and scripts that form and define our lives. It is about the knowledge structures that shape how we view the world and how we understand the limitless information with which we are always confronted. This Article is also about the "evolution of ideas" underlying corporate law and all of modern policymaking. It is about the ways in which schemas and scripts have influenced how policy theorists, policymakers, lawyers, and many others (particularly in the West) understand and approach policymaking generally and corporate law specifically. It is about both the invisibility and blinding …

Colin Powell's 2000 Keynote Address: Compassionate Conservatism In An Age Of Cynicism, Kehrin Kercher Thomas

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Colin Powell faced significant rhetorical challenges when he delivered his keynote address at the 2000 Republican National Convention, including the existing political atmosphere and public sentiment, the political implications of a Republican victory, the influence of technology on campaign rhetoric, and audience attitude toward him. Despite rhetorical identification as a significant part of our national conversation and one of the few convention events receiving significant media coverage, little analysis has been generated on the keynote address. This study attempts to fill a gap and influence future research on a communicative act that has undergone, and may continue to undergo, significant …

A Policy Analysis Of Nevada's Middle School Retention Legislation, Julie Ann Abeyta Jan 2004

A Policy Analysis Of Nevada's Middle School Retention Legislation, Julie Ann Abeyta

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

In 1997, the Nevada State Legislature passed Assembly Bill 376 permitting the State Board of Education to adopt credit requirements that students must meet prior to being promoted from eighth grade to high school. A resulting State Board of Education regulation requires that a student earn one-and-one-half credits in language and one-and-one-half credits in mathematics during seventh and eighth grades to merit promotion to high school; While much attention has been given to the issue of retention and social promotion in large urban school districts such as Chicago and New York City, little investigation has been directed to smaller, rural …
