台灣牙醫學教育評鑑準則之擬訂, 敏光 郭, 若松 王, 思光 陳, 萬烘 藍

Journal of Medical Education

Journal of Medical Education

Problem-based learning (PBL,) is a worldwide popular educational philosophy but in some institutions, it is considered a revolutionary teaching strategy to implement. The International Medical University (IMU) has utilized PBL as a key delivery tool of its medical programme and to encourage life-long learning amongst it s students. The university has also carried out faculty development in PBL since its inception in 1992. This is in order to improve PBL sessions, make sure faculty understand what is expected of them during these sessions and ensure our students derive the full benefit of PBL. The aim of this study is to …

Effect Of Coating Additives On The Rheological And Optical Properties Of Coated Papers, Burak Aksoy Dec 2004

Effect Of Coating Additives On The Rheological And Optical Properties Of Coated Papers, Burak Aksoy

Dissertations

Although additives are used in small amounts (below 2wt.% of the total solids) in a coating formulation, they play an important role in the runnability and end-use performance of the coating. Among coating additives, the use of insolubilizers and fluorescent whitening agents (FWA's) has increased due to theincrease in demand for higher quality graphic papers and packaging. Zirconium containing insolubilizers were studied for their rheological effects on silica ink jet coatings. Both zirconium species had an influence on the theological properties of the coating and its components. The interactions between thezirconium salts and the coating were found to be weak …

Assessing The Differential Outcomes Procedure With Children Diagnosed With Autism, Ivy M. Chong Dec 2004

Assessing The Differential Outcomes Procedure With Children Diagnosed With Autism, Ivy M. Chong

Dissertations

The differential outcomes effect (DOE) refers to the phenomenon whereby discrimination learning is enhanced when a correct response to a specific sample stimulus is followed by its own unique reward (Savage, 2001). According to some researchers, the DOE is a consistent and powerful effect that enhances the acquisition and retention of conditional discriminations (e.g., Urcuioli, 1990). This series of experiments sought to extend research on the DOE. In Experiment 1, we examined the differential outcomes procedure (DOP) with four children diagnosed with autism across various task types commonly used in early intervention. In Experiment 2, we examined the DOP with …

Measurement Of Handle Forces For Crimping Connectors And Cutting Cable In The Electric Power Industry, Richard W. Marklin, Lia Lazuardi, Jeremy R. Wilzbacher Dec 2004

Measurement Of Handle Forces For Crimping Connectors And Cutting Cable In The Electric Power Industry, Richard W. Marklin, Lia Lazuardi, Jeremy R. Wilzbacher

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Overhead and underground line work in the electric power industry is physically very strenuous and can expose workers to musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), particularly in the upper extremity. Crimping compression connectors—such as sleeve connectors and lugs—and cutting cables are two of the most frequent tasks that line workers perform. Line workers at many utilities in the US crimp connectors and cut cable with long-handled manual tools. However, the actual magnitude of the forces applied to the handles of these tools is not known. The objectives of this laboratory study were to measure the forces applied to the handles of a manual …

Steps To A Political Ecology Of Amazonia, Steven L. Rubenstein Dec 2004

Steps To A Political Ecology Of Amazonia, Steven L. Rubenstein

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

Many recent studies of Amazonia have documented the ways in which agents of the state or capital seek to colonize not only indigenous land and labor, but indigenous desires as well.  This colonization of the third kind has disastrous consequences: recently, William Fisher asked, “Why ... did it seem that Xikrin would sell their grandchildren’s environmental birthright just at the moment when reservations were finally being demarcated and boundaries guaranteed for generations to come?”  Here I argue that this sort of question must become one of the central concerns of Amazonian ethnology.   Drawing on work by Fisher and others, I …

Determinants Of Aggregate R&D, Role Of Fiscal Policy, And The Effects Of Government R&D On Economic Growth, Ashraf Galal Mohamed Eid Dec 2004

Determinants Of Aggregate R&D, Role Of Fiscal Policy, And The Effects Of Government R&D On Economic Growth, Ashraf Galal Mohamed Eid

Dissertations

This dissertation contains three essays on research and development (R&D): determinants, the role of fiscal policy, and the effects of government R&D on economic growth. The first essay is an attempt to study the determinants of aggregate R&D expenditure in both emerging and developed countries with special attention to patent rights protection and technology transfer. The main findings are: (1) patent protection helps R&D but overly burdensome protection can limit access to new innovations and thus slow down the rate of research and development, and (2) technology transfer, through imports and FDI, has a positive and significant effect only if …

Cfd Analysis Of 3-D Thermalhydraulics Flow Effects On Wall Concentration Gradient Profiles For Lbe Loop Fittings, Narain Armbya Dec 2004

Cfd Analysis Of 3-D Thermalhydraulics Flow Effects On Wall Concentration Gradient Profiles For Lbe Loop Fittings, Narain Armbya

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The objective of the thesis is to study the effects of thermalhydraulics flows on the wall concentration gradient profiles in LBE loop fittings. To that end detailed models of the fittings have been constructed to study these effects. These fittings include sudden expansion, sudden contraction, t-joint and elbow. The typical flow rates chosen for these simulations are typical of design criteria chosen for the loop with Reynolds numbers expected around 200,000 and the usual axial temperature profiles which are being characterized in the DELTA loop at LANL. STAR-CD is the simulation package used to make these predictions, which include detailed …

Efficiency Of Taiwanese Laptop Manufacturers, Yi-Horng Lai Dec 2004

Efficiency Of Taiwanese Laptop Manufacturers, Yi-Horng Lai

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

Taiwanese laptop manufacturers strive hard to maintain their high growth rates and positions as leaders in the industry. Michael E. Porter claimed that Taiwanese enterprises must increase industrial efficiency to secure competitive advantage. Hence, developing an effective means of measuring and comparing the efficiency of Taiwanese laptop manufacturers is essential. Increasing the production efficiency of inefficient companies will improve the average efficiency and global competitiveness of the Taiwanese laptop industry.

This investigation examines the efficiency of 12 Taiwanese laptop manufacturers in 2002. Although financial ratio analysis represents a conventional approach to measuring the performance of enterprises using financial reports, this …

Investment And Capital Flows Under Uncertainty And Capital Market Imperfection In Oil Producing Countries, Mohamed Gaber Hassan Elsayed Dec 2004

Investment And Capital Flows Under Uncertainty And Capital Market Imperfection In Oil Producing Countries, Mohamed Gaber Hassan Elsayed

Dissertations

This dissertation analyzes and estimates the interactions between domestic investment and each type of capital flow under uncertainty and capital market imperfection in 13 oil-producing countries from 1981 to 2003. First, we discuss the recent development in investment theories under uncertainty, irreversibility, and imperfect capital market. Secondly, decomposing uncertainty into permanent and transitory components--based on C-GARCH--we constructuncertainty measures of broad macroeconomic variables in addition to oil price.

Thirdly, a model of four simultaneous equations is developed to capture dynamic interactions. My contribution is twofold. First, not only do we consider the impact of uncertainty and credit market imperfection on investment, …

Phase Coherent Effects In The Speckle Correlation Of Light Scattered From Volume Disordered Media And Randomly Rough Surfaces, Bogdan Danila Dec 2004

Phase Coherent Effects In The Speckle Correlation Of Light Scattered From Volume Disordered Media And Randomly Rough Surfaces, Bogdan Danila

Dissertations

We present a study of the statistics of the intensity patterns produced when coherent light is scattered by random media (volume disorder) or randomly rough surfaces. Such a random, granular interference pattern is called speckle. Particular emphasis is on the statistical correlations arising between thefluctuations of the intensities corresponding to distinct scattering paths; which are quantified by the speckle correlation function. In the first part, we present results for the correlation function computed for volume-disordered media by means of numerical simulation. Our focus is on the sensitivity of the correlationfunction to statistical parameters characterizing the volume distribution of the refraction …

Effectiveness Of Teaching Modalities For Pre-College Level Mathematics Courses, Dorothy Latuszek Dec 2004

Effectiveness Of Teaching Modalities For Pre-College Level Mathematics Courses, Dorothy Latuszek

Dissertations

College educators are challenged with providing students with choices of teaching modalities that facilitate student achievement and success at a time when students are also seeking flexible scheduling and accommodation of their differing learning styles. This is certainly the case for college students who need to demonstrate proficiency for the content in pre-college level mathematics courses prior to enrolling in college-level mathematics courses. The term "pre-college level" is defined as courses in reading, writing, and mathematics for college students lacking those skills necessary to perform college-levelcoursework at two- or four-year college institutions (Parsad & Lewis, 2003).

Do certain teaching modalities …

Fumed Metallic Oxides And Conventional Pigments For Glossy Inkjet Paper, Hyunkook Lee Dec 2004

Fumed Metallic Oxides And Conventional Pigments For Glossy Inkjet Paper, Hyunkook Lee

Dissertations

Product development activity in the area of inkjet printing papers has accelerated greatly to meet the rapidly growing market for inkjet papers. Advancements in inkjet printing technology have also placed new demands on the paper substrate due to faster printing rates, greater resolution through increased drop volumes, and colorants added to the ink. To meet these requirements, papermakers are turning to pigmented size press formulations or pigmented coating systems. For inkjet coating applications, both the internal porosity of the pigment particles as well as the packing porosity of the coating affect print quality and dry time. Pores between the pigment …

The Relationship Between Locus Of Control And Nutrition Health Status Among Adult Wic Participants, Damita Jo Zweiback Dec 2004

The Relationship Between Locus Of Control And Nutrition Health Status Among Adult Wic Participants, Damita Jo Zweiback

Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between locus of control orientation and the nutrition health status of adult WIC participants in Michigan. The locus of control variable is defined as the degree to which an individual perceives reinforcement or outcomes as contingent upon his or her own behavior. It ranges from internal to external. Internal locus of control is the individual's belief that s/he is an actor and can determine one's fate within limits. External locus of control is the person's belief that s/he is controlled by forces outside of one's self (Lefcourt, 1976; Koger, 1999). …

Bergmann's Clines In Ectotherms: Illustrating A Life-History Perspective With Sceloporine Lizards, Michael J. Angilletta Jr., Peter H. Niewiarowski, Arthur E. Dunham, Adam D. Leache, Warren P. Porter

Biology Faculty Research

The generality and causes of Bergmann's rule have been debated vigorously in the last few years, but Bergmann's clines are rarely explained in the context of life-history theory. We used both traditional and phylogenetic comparative analyses to explore the causes of latitudinal and thermal clines in the body size of the eastern fence lizard (Sceloporus undulatus). The proximate mechanism for larger body sizes in colder environments is delayed maturation, which results in a greater fecundity but a lower survival to maturity. Life-history theory predicts that a higher survivorship of juveniles in colder environments can favor the evolution of a Bergmann's …

Eliminating Adversary Wmd: What's At Stake?, Rebecca K.C. Hersman

WMD Occasional Papers

The failure to find substantial evidence of nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons in Iraq has exposed serious weaknesses in the U.S. understanding of the weapons of mass destruction (WMD) threat posed by its adversaries as well as in its ability to deal effectively with these threats. A rancorous and highly politicized debate, primarily about the intelligence assessments of Iraqi WMD capabilities before Operation Iraqi Freedom, has dominated national discussion for months. Unfortunately, the current preoccupation with intelligence might mask other issues and shortcomings in the American ability to eliminate the threat posed by weapons of mass destruction in the hands …

Defense Horizons

Military transformation— “a process that shapes the changing nature of military competition and cooperation through new combinations of concepts, capabilities, people and organizations”— is on the minds and agendas of everyone dealing with the military. Many people talk about transformation; the two authors of this Defense Horizons have done something about it. In fact, they are among the few who have been responsible for shaping and implementing the concept. To get a better idea of what goes into this process, particularly the element of joint experimentation that is helping to identify and define the nature of change, Defense Horizons presents …
