Invisible Points Of Departure: Reading Rothko’S Christological Imagery, Andrea Pappas Dec 2004

Invisible Points Of Departure: Reading Rothko’S Christological Imagery, Andrea Pappas

Art and Art History

Jewish identity increasingly figures in new histories of modernism in general, analyses of American art, and, recently, abstract expressionism.1 Although abstract paintings have signified “Jewishness” only since the late sixties, this essay looks at the antecedents of such re-identification in one canonical figure, Mark Rothko, examining three paintings from a narrow range of time in the early days of World War II. His Antigone of 1940 (Figure 1) remains one of his most familiar paintings from the formative period spanning 1940 to mid-1943. It is one of a small handful of works canonized from his early production: paintings that traditionally …

Spaceborne Microwave Remote Sensing Of Seasonal Freeze-Thaw Processes In The Terrestrial High Latitudes: Relationships With Land-Atmosphere Co2 Exchange, Kyle C. Mcdonald, John S. Kimball, Maosheng Zhao, Eni G. Njoku, Reiner Zimmermann, Steven W. Running Dec 2004

Spaceborne Microwave Remote Sensing Of Seasonal Freeze-Thaw Processes In The Terrestrial High Latitudes: Relationships With Land-Atmosphere Co2 Exchange, Kyle C. Mcdonald, John S. Kimball, Maosheng Zhao, Eni G. Njoku, Reiner Zimmermann, Steven W. Running

Numerical Terradynamic Simulation Group Publications

Landscape transitions between seasonally frozen and thawed conditions occur each year over roughly 50 million square kilometers of Earth's Northern Hemisphere. These realtively abrupt transitions represent the closest analog to a biospheric and hydrologic on/off switch existing in nature, affecting surface meteorological conditions, ecological trace gas dynamics, energy exchange and hydrologic activity profoundly. We utilize time series satellite-borne microwave remote sensing measurements from the Special Sensor Microwave Imager (SSM/I) to examine spatial and temporal variability in seasonal freeze/thaw cycles for the pan-Arctic basin and Alaska. Regional measurements of spring thaw timing are derived using daily brightness temperature measurements from the …

George Mason: Slave Owning Virginia Planter As Slavery Opponent?, Louis Bellamy Dec 2004

George Mason: Slave Owning Virginia Planter As Slavery Opponent?, Louis Bellamy

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The present work investigates the often cited, but poorly supported, notion that Founding Father George Mason was a wealthy, slave-owning Virginian who vehemently opposed slavery. Utilizing Mason's state papers, letters, and other documents, as well as contemporaries' accounts of his speeches, this work will analyze those records' contextual construction, and it will deconstruct both Mason's written and spoken words and his actions and inactions relative to slavery. The goal of this effort is to determine whether Mason, who ostensibly played such an instrumental role in the development of the "rights" of Americans, and who remained a slaveholder—thereby trampling the rights …

Water Loss Estimates For Five Recently Transplanted Landscape Tree Species In A Semi-Arid Climate, Thayne Montague, Roger Kjelgren, Rick Allen, David Wester Dec 2004

Water Loss Estimates For Five Recently Transplanted Landscape Tree Species In A Semi-Arid Climate, Thayne Montague, Roger Kjelgren, Rick Allen, David Wester

Plants, Soils, and Climate Faculty Publications

Over three growing seasons (1994-1996), water loss of five recently transplanted, balled and burlaped (B&B) tree species was investigated using below-ground, electronic weighing lysimeters. For each species, actual tree water loss was correlated with reference evapotranspiration (ETo) to create a water loss multiplier. At the beginning of each growing season a single tree was planted into each lysimeter. Selected species were London planetree (Platanus x acerifolia 'Bloodgood'), corkscrew willow (Salix matsudana 'Tortuosa'), littleleaf linden (Tilia cordataI 'Greenspire'), Norway maple (Acer platanoides 'Emerald Queen'), and green ash (Fraximus pennsylvanica 'Patmore'). Throughout each growing season, tress were well-watered and lysimeter mass and …

European Principles Governing National Administrative Proceedings, Claudio Franchini Dec 2004

European Principles Governing National Administrative Proceedings, Claudio Franchini

Law and Contemporary Problems

It is critical that the process of developing general principles of Community administrative law continue, notwithstanding the marked diversity of supranational administrative proceedings. Because Community law has traditionally been focused on activities relevant to the common market, an asymmetry between the regulation of market-related administrative proceedings and other types of administrative proceedings has developed.

Discovery Of Co Gas In The Inner Disk Of Tw Hydrae, Terrence W. Rettig, Joe Haywood, Theodore Simon, Sean D. Brittain, Erika Gibb Dec 2004

Discovery Of Co Gas In The Inner Disk Of Tw Hydrae, Terrence W. Rettig, Joe Haywood, Theodore Simon, Sean D. Brittain, Erika Gibb

Publications

We report the detection of rovibrationally excited CO emission from the inner disk of the classical T Tauri star (cTTS) TW Hya. We observe ~6 × 1021 g of CO gas with a rotational temperature of 430 ± 40 K. The linearity of the excitation plot suggests that the CO is optically thin. Atypical for cTTSs, hot CO was not detected, implying that TW Hya has cleared its inner disk region out to a radial distance of ~0.5 AU. We discuss implications for the structure of the disk as it relates to replenishment and planet formation.

Seasonal Variations Of The Gravity Wave Momentum Flux In The Antarctic Mesosphere And Lower Thermosphere, P. J. Espy, G. O.L. Jones, G. R. Swenson, J. Tang, Michael J. Taylor Dec 2004

Seasonal Variations Of The Gravity Wave Momentum Flux In The Antarctic Mesosphere And Lower Thermosphere, P. J. Espy, G. O.L. Jones, G. R. Swenson, J. Tang, Michael J. Taylor

All Physics Faculty Publications

Airglow imager and dynasonde/imaging Doppler interferometer (IDI) radar wind measurements at Halley Station, Antarctica (75.6S, 26.6W) have been used to estimate the seasonal variation of the vertical fluxes of horizontal momentum carried by highfrequency atmospheric gravity waves. The cross-correlation coefficients between the vertical and horizontal wind perturbations were calculated from sodium (Na) airglow imager data collected during the austral winter seasons of 2000 and 2001. These were combined with wind velocity variances from coincident radar measurements to estimate the daily averaged upper limit of the vertical flux of horizontal momentum due to gravity waves. The resulting momentum flux at the …

Late Payments In Accession Countries: Causes And International Comparison, Janez Prašnikar, Marko Pahor, Andreja Cirman

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

In developed countries in everyday business, payment delays often present a problem. Payment delays have already been a matter of discussion in Slovenia for several years. Irrespective of some positive movements in the past years, the state of payment discipline in Slovenia is not at a satisfactory level. In this area, Slovenia could be classified among the less successful countries when compared to other countries in Europe. Our paper determines factors behind this fact. The findings are important not only for Slovenia, but also for other EU candidate countries faced with similar problems of transition. The paper has led to …

Evaluating Flexibility In Small Firm Financing, Andrey Pavlov, Panikkos Poutziouris, Khaled Soufani Dec 2004

Evaluating Flexibility In Small Firm Financing, Andrey Pavlov, Panikkos Poutziouris, Khaled Soufani

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

The choice of financing source is particularly difficult for a small firm due to the high uncertainty about future liquidity requirements. We show that the techniques of continuous time arbitrage and stochastic control theory may be used not only to value such firms but also to determine the optimal financing policies. In particular, we investigate the choice between liquid, but more expensive, forms of financing and restrictive, but cheaper, sources of capital. In addition to developing an optimal financing policy for a typical firm, we estimate the value of flexibility in a financing arrangement. This, in turn, provides a rational …

Venture Backed Ipo's In India: Issues Of Certification And Underpricing, A. Vinay Kumar

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

Indian venture capital industry is now considered as one of the predominant players among South Asian countries. As India started emerging as a country which is considered as a hi-tech and global outsourcing center, Indian venture capital industry started looking up with new investment opportunities. New funds have opened their shop here in India and are continuing to bring in more and more funds. Indian research on initial public offerings is sparse. Previous studies have highlighted the presence of significant underpricing in IPOs. Studies also review the aftermarket performance of these IPOs but the aspect of venture backed IPOs and …

Making A Cyber Literacy Connection From The Storage Room To The College Room, Paula Boxie Dec 2004

Making A Cyber Literacy Connection From The Storage Room To The College Room, Paula Boxie

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

What roles can colleges and universities play in serving the many young adults whom our public school systems fail? This article sheds light on how one university was able to make a literacy connection with students attending an Alternative High School (AHS). This connection enabled AHS students and teacher candidates to effectively carry out a writing project in cyberspace. Data indicated that as the AHS students worked closely with their mentors, they became more aware of literacy strategies they needed to construct meaning and were able to recognize and appreciate quality writing. Thus, creating more partner-ships between higher institutions and …

Letter From The Editor-In-Chief, Allan Young

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

The study and practice of entrepreneurial finance and its associated relevance for the field of business venturing is now at long last secure in its place in the pantheon of well respected academic and professional disciplines. While initially perhaps thought of as no more than grist for the mill of those involved with personal self-enrichment and beyond the pale of concern with the scholarly dissemination of the world’s accumulated valued wisdom, areas such as the study of venture capital, micro-financing, entrepreneurship management and other related pursuits have now established themselves as well worth the interest of those intimately pursuing serious …

Microfinance: A Comprehensive Review Of The Existing Literature, James C. Brau, Gary M. Woller

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

Although the word finance is in the term microfinance, and the core elements of microfinance are those of the finance discipline, microfinance has yet to break into the mainstream or entrepreneurial finance literature. The purpose of this article is to introduce the finance academic community to the discipline of microfinance and microfinance institutions (MFIs). We provide a comprehensive review of over 350 articles and address the issues of MFI sustainability, products and services, management practices, clientele targeting, regulation and policy, and impact assessment.

Letter From The Guest Editor, Arthur Wilson

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

This year's Academy of Entrepreneurial Finance Conference at George Washington University last April was well attended and well worth attending. We were treated to a variety of good papers along numerous lines of enquiry, of which the following are examples. If there is a consistent theme to these selections (perhaps by accident?) it is in innovative explorations of new and interesting databases.

Which Loans Are Relationship Loans? Evidence From The 1998 Survey Of Small Business Finances, Karlyn Mitchell, Douglas K. Pearce Dec 2004

Which Loans Are Relationship Loans? Evidence From The 1998 Survey Of Small Business Finances, Karlyn Mitchell, Douglas K. Pearce

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

Despite financial economists' long-standing interest in the role of lender-borrower relationships in increasing the availability of funds to small businesses, many questions remain unanswered. Numerous empirical studies investigate the effect of relationships on the availability and terms of credit to small businesses (Petersen and Rajan (1994), Berger and Udell (1995), Blackwell and Winters (1997), Cole (1998), Harhoff and Körting (1998), Elsas and Krahnen (1998), Angelini et al.(1998), Degryse and van Cayseele (2000), Bodenhorn (2003)) and many find that relationships improve the availability of credit for some categories of small businesses. But the studies present mixed results on how relationships affect …

The "Liability Of Newness" And Small Firm Access To Debt Capital: Is There A Link?, Susan Coleman Dec 2004

The "Liability Of Newness" And Small Firm Access To Debt Capital: Is There A Link?, Susan Coleman

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

Literature pertaining to the “liability of newness” contends that newer firms face particular difficulties and a greater risk of failure. This article seeks to determine if “newness” is also a disadvantage in the acquisition of debt capital. Results indicate that newer firms were significantly less likely to have lines of credit and were also significantly more likely to have been turned down for their most recent loan. Even when we control for length of relationship with the primary financial services provider, personal guarantees, and collateral, younger firms were still more likely to be turned down for loans. Small firms are …

Does Corporate Governance Influence Firm Value? Evidence From Indian Firms, Jayesh Kumar Dec 2004

Does Corporate Governance Influence Firm Value? Evidence From Indian Firms, Jayesh Kumar

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

This paper examines empirically the effects of ownership structure on the firm performance for a panel of Indian corporate firms, from a corporate governance perspective. We examine the effect of interactions between corporate, foreign, institutional, and directorial ownership on firm performance. Using firm level panel data framework, we show that a large fraction of cross-sectional variation, in firm performance, can be explained by unobserved firm heterogeneity. We also provide evidence that the shareholding by institutional investors and managers affect firm performance non-linearly, after controlling for observed firm characteristics and unobserved firm heterogeneity. Institutional investors monitor the firm once their stake …

Annualized Returns Of Ventured-Backed Public Companies Stratified By Decades And By Stages Of Financing, Emanuel Shachmurove, Yochanan Shachmurove Dec 2004

Annualized Returns Of Ventured-Backed Public Companies Stratified By Decades And By Stages Of Financing, Emanuel Shachmurove, Yochanan Shachmurove

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

This paper investigates the actual performance of 2,678 Initial Public Offerings (IPOs) of companies that were backed by venture capital from 1969 to 2002. The main purpose is to compare the annual returns of the venture capital industry during the 1980s and 1990s. Comparisons between the decades provide some reasoning for the increased media coverage of the industry. There is no doubt that the media is fascinated by the release of any good news concerned with venture capital. For example, many people are familiar with the recent venture-backed Initial Public Offering (IPO) of Google, which brought in $1.7 billion on …

Letter From The Editor-In-Chief, Allan Young Dec 2004

Letter From The Editor-In-Chief, Allan Young

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

This issue of The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance and Business Ventures is devoted exclusively to research on venture capital. As such, the issue seeks to develop and analyze research concerns relevant to an area which has come to be recognized as perhaps the singly most important lifeblood concern with respect to entrepreneurship. The financing of business ventures at the germination of idea, start-up, early growth, and public financing stages are all vital to the success of an entrepreneurial venture. Since venture capital participation is almost always essential in each of these phases of entrepreneurial development, work studying the operations of …
