Resource Allocation In A Breeding Program For Phosphorus Concentration In Maize Grain, Brandon M. Wardyn, W. Ken Russell Jan 2004

Resource Allocation In A Breeding Program For Phosphorus Concentration In Maize Grain, Brandon M. Wardyn, W. Ken Russell

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

When beef cattle (Bos taurus) are fed grain of maize (Zea mays L.) in which the concentration of phosphorus (P) exceeds the animal’s need for this element, the excess P is excreted in the feces. Spreading this manure on cropland increases the potential for P pollution of surface waters by run-off. Experiments were undertaken to determine the relative magnitudes of genotypic and nongenotypic variances of P concentration in maize grain (P-Gr) to assess the ability to select maize genotypes in which this trait more closely matches the dietary need of beef cattle. Genetic variability was found in …

Windbreaks In North American Agricultural Systems, James R. Brandle, Laurie Hodges, Xinhua H. Zhou Jan 2004

Windbreaks In North American Agricultural Systems, James R. Brandle, Laurie Hodges, Xinhua H. Zhou

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Windbreaks are a major component of successful agricultural systems throughout the world. The focus of this chapter is on temperate-zone, commercial, agricultural systems in North America, where windbreaks contribute to both producer profitability and environmental quality by increasing crop production while simultaneously reducing the level of off-farm inputs. They help control erosion and blowing snow, improve animal health and survival under winter conditions, reduce energy consumption of the farmstead unit, and enhance habitat diversity, providing refuges for predatory birds and insects. On a larger landscape scale windbreaks provide habitat for various types of wildlife and have the potential to contribute …

Measuring The Robustness Of A Resource Allocation, Shoukat Ali, A. A. Maciejewski, Howard Jay Siegel, Jong-Kook Kim

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Parallel and distributed systems may operate in an environment that undergoes unpredictable changes causing certain system performance features to degrade. Such systems need robustness to guarantee limited degradation despite fluctuations in the behavior of its component parts or environment. This research investigates the robustness of an allocation of resources to tasks in parallel and distributed systems. The main contributions are 1) a mathematical description of a metric for the robustness of a resource allocation with respect to desired system performance features against multiple perturbations in multiple system and environmental conditions, and 2) a procedure for deriving a robustness metric for …

Using Multi-Spectral Imagery To Evaluate Corn Grown Under Nitrogen And Drought Stressed Conditions, Shannon L. Osborne, James S. Schepers, Mike R. Schlemmer

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

The in-season estimation of crop stresses which have the potential of adversely affecting crop yield and/or quality could allow producers to make in-season management decisions to correct for the particular stress. A field study was conducted to evaluate the use of multispectral imagery for estimating corn (Zea mays L.) grain yield, in-season biomass and nitrogen (N) concentration under varying N and drought stresses. The experiment was a split-plot design with three replications using a factorial arrangement of treatments. Three irrigation (whole-plot) treatments included dry land, irrigation based on 0.5, and full evapotranspiration (ET). Sub-plot treatments included five N …

Stationkeeping Of An L₂ Libration Point Satellite With Θ-D Technique, Ming Xin, S. N. Balakrishnan, Henry J. Pernicka, Michael W. Dancer Jan 2004

Stationkeeping Of An L₂ Libration Point Satellite With Θ-D Technique, Ming Xin, S. N. Balakrishnan, Henry J. Pernicka, Michael W. Dancer

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A new method for L2 libration-point orbit stationkeeping is proposed in this paper using continuous thrust. The circular restricted three-body problem with Sun and Earth as the two primaries is considered. The unstable orbit about the L2 libration-point requires stationkeeping maneuvers to maintain the nominal path. In this study, an approach, called the "θ-D technique," based on optimal control theory gives a closed-form suboptimal feedback solution to solve this nonlinear control problem. In this approach the Hamiltonian-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equation is solved approximately by adding some perturbations to the cost function. The controller is designed such that the actual …

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Atrazine is one of the most commonly used herbicides in the United States, therefore it is a regulatory concern and is extensively monitored in the environment, especially in drinking water. Because of the higher costs of gas chromatography (GC) methods, utility managers and regulators are considering the increased use of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) methods for monitoring atrazine. an ELISA test kit was recently approved by the US Environmental Protection Agency. the research in this article points out potential biases and inaccuracies that may occur with such test kits. ELISA test kits for atrazine are typically precise (repeatable) but often …

A Physics-Based Model Of Sic-Based Mesfets, Sankha Mukherjee Jan 2004

A Physics-Based Model Of Sic-Based Mesfets, Sankha Mukherjee

Theses

Silicon Carbide (SiC) has been investigated as an alternative material to Silicon (Si) for enhancing the power-handling capability of semiconductor devices for simultaneous high-temperature and high frequency applications. Its high thermal conductivity, high bandgap, low permittivity, high saturation velocity, moderate mobility, material hardness and chemical inertness make it a prime candidate for power electronics, heat and light sensors, and MEMS applications. The MESFET is the most viable power transistor based on SiC. The performance of SiC MESFETs is limited by trapping and thermal effects. A physics-based analytical model of the SiC MESFET incorporating trapping and thermal effects is reported. The …

A Unique Fault-Tolerant Design For Flying Capacitor Multilevel Inverter, Xiaomin Kou, Keith Corzine, Yakov L. Familiant Jan 2004

A Unique Fault-Tolerant Design For Flying Capacitor Multilevel Inverter, Xiaomin Kou, Keith Corzine, Yakov L. Familiant

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents a unique design for flying capacitor type multilevel inverters with fault-tolerant features. When a single-switch fault per phase occurs, the new design can still provide the same number of converting levels by shorting the fault power semiconductors and reconfiguring the gate controls. The most attractive point of the proposed design is that it can undertake the single-switch fault per phase without sacrificing power converting quality. Future more, if multiple faults occur in different phases and each phase have only one fault switch, the proposed design can still conditionally provide consistent voltage converting levels. This paper will also …

Partial Discharge On-Line Monitoring For Hv Cable Systems Using Electrooptic Modulators, Paul L. Lewin, David Pommerenke, Simon J. Sutton, Yuan Tian, James S. Wilkinson Jan 2004

Partial Discharge On-Line Monitoring For Hv Cable Systems Using Electrooptic Modulators, Paul L. Lewin, David Pommerenke, Simon J. Sutton, Yuan Tian, James S. Wilkinson

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A technique for the remote inspection and monitoring of partial discharge (PD) activity using an optical network is described. The network uses a LiNbO3, modulator to modulate the intensity of the transmitted laser light approximately proportional to the voltage applied across the modulator. The laser light is transmitted along an optical fibre and measured remotely by a high-speed optical receiver. A capacitive coupler has been used to detect partial discharge activity and act as the modulator's input voltage source. The electro-optic modulator is passive and does not require a power supply at the site of the PD detection sensor. The …

Comparative Analysis Of Bragg Fibers, Shangping Guo, Sacharia Albin, Robert S. Rogowski Jan 2004

Comparative Analysis Of Bragg Fibers, Shangping Guo, Sacharia Albin, Robert S. Rogowski

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

In this paper, we compare three analysis methods for Bragg fibers, viz. the transfer matrix method, the asymptotic method and the Galerkin method. We also show that with minor modifications, the transfer matrix method is able to calculate exactly the leakage loss of Bragg fibers due to a finite number of H/L layers. This approach is more straightforward than the commonly used Chew’s method. It is shown that the asymptotic approximation condition should be satisfied in order to get accurate results. The TE and TM modes, and the band gap structures are analyzed using Galerkin method.

Are Microbubbles Necessary For The Breakdown Of Liquid Water Subjected To A Submicrosecond Pulse?, R. P. Joshi, J. Qian, G. Zhao, J. Kolb, K. H. Schoenbach, E. Schamiloglu, J. Gaudet Jan 2004

Are Microbubbles Necessary For The Breakdown Of Liquid Water Subjected To A Submicrosecond Pulse?, R. P. Joshi, J. Qian, G. Zhao, J. Kolb, K. H. Schoenbach, E. Schamiloglu, J. Gaudet

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Electrical breakdown in homogeneous liquid water for an ∼ 100 ns voltage pulse is analyzed. It is shown that electron-impact ionization is not likely to be important and could only be operative for low-density situations or possibly under optical excitation. Simulation results also indicate that field ionization of liquid water can lead to a liquid breakdown provided the ionization energies were very low in the order of 2.3eV. Under such conditions, an electric-field collapse at the anode and plasma propagation toward the cathode, with minimal physical charge transport, is predicted. However, the low, unphysical ionization energies necessary for matching …

Adaptive Critic Neural Network-Based Object Grasping Control Using A Three-Finger Gripper, Gustavo Galan, Jagannathan Sarangapani Jan 2004

Adaptive Critic Neural Network-Based Object Grasping Control Using A Three-Finger Gripper, Gustavo Galan, Jagannathan Sarangapani

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Grasping of objects has been a challenging task for robots. The complex grasping task can be defined as object contact control and manipulation subtasks. In this paper, object contact control subtask is defined as the ability to follow a trajectory accurately by the fingers of a gripper. The object manipulation subtask is defined in terms of maintaining a predefined applied force by the fingers on the object. A sophisticated controller is necessary since the process of grasping an object without a priori knowledge of the object's size, texture, softness, gripper, and contact dynamics is rather difficult. Moreover, the object has …

Learning To Learn-Concepts In A First Power Engineering Course, Badrul H. Chowdhury Jan 2004

Learning To Learn-Concepts In A First Power Engineering Course, Badrul H. Chowdhury

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Three well-known and widely accepted concepts in educational psychology are revisited. These are "inventory of learning styles," "taxonomy of educational objectives," and "metacognition." Relationships among these concepts are highlighted. Often, a student can develop his (or her) own learning style by the process of metacognition. Ideas are borrowed from these concepts for use in a first-level power systems course. It is beyond a doubt that both cognitive and metacognitive skills are necessary for students to succeed in any course. While a semester-long power systems course leaves little time for critical thinking and passive reflection for students, certain activities may very …

Characterization Of Human Metal Esd Reference Discharge Event And Correlation Of Generator Parameters To Failure Levels-Part Ii: Correlation Of Generator Parameters To Failure Levels, Kai Wang, David Pommerenke, Ramachandran Chundru, Thomas Van Doren, Jiu Sheng Huang, Federico Centola

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Most electrostatic discharge (ESD) generators are built in accordance with the IEC 61000-4-2 specifications. It is shown, that the voltage induced in a small loop correlates with the failure level observed in an ESD failure test on the systems comprised of fast CMOS devices, while rise time and derivative of the discharge current did not correlate well. The electric parameters of typical ESD generators and ESD generators that have been modified to reflect the current and field parameters of the human metal reference event are compared and the effect on the failure level of fast CMOS electronics is investigated. The …

Distribution Of Legumes Along Gradients Of Slope And Soil Electrical Conductivity In Pastures, John A. Guretzky, Kenneth J. Moore, C. Lee Burras, E. Charles Brummer Jan 2004

Distribution Of Legumes Along Gradients Of Slope And Soil Electrical Conductivity In Pastures, John A. Guretzky, Kenneth J. Moore, C. Lee Burras, E. Charles Brummer

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Legumes establish and persist on backslope landscape positions but fail on summits and toeslopes in southeastern Iowa pastures, suggesting that these pastures be managed site specifically. Visual delineation of landscape positions, however, can be difficult, and char- acterization of spatial variability through soil sampling is expensive. Creation of digital elevation models (DEM) and apparent soil electrical conductivity (ECa) mapping are inexpensive alternatives to de- scribing field conditions. Our objective was to examine the relationships of DEM-derived slope, soil ECa, and legume distribution in pastures. We examined these relationships across four 1.4-ha pastures. Each pasture was divided into …
