Contextual Biometric Watermarking Of Fingerprint Images, Nikhil C. Tungala

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This research presents contextual digital watermarking techniques using face and demographic text data as multiple watermarks for protecting the evidentiary integrity of fingerprint image. The proposed techniques embed the watermarks into selected regions of fingerprint image in MDCT and DWT domains. A general image watermarking algorithm is developed to investigate the application of MDCT in the elimination of blocking artifacts. The application of MDCT has improved the performance of the watermarking technique compared to DCT. Experimental results show that modifications to fingerprint image are visually imperceptible and maintain the minutiae detail. The integrity of the fingerprint image is verified through …

Strength Evaluation Of Honeycomb Frp Sandwich Panels With Sinusoidal Core Geometry, An Chen

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In recent years, the demands in civil infrastructure have provided opportunities for development and implementation of Honeycomb Fiber-Reinforced Polymer (HFRP) sandwich panels, both in rehabilitation projects and new constructions.;This dissertation is the first study on strength evaluation of HFRP sandwich panels with sinusoidal core geometry. Core materials for sandwich structures are primarily subjected to out-of-plane compression and shear. Therefore, three major contributions are included in this dissertation: out-of-plane compression, out-of-plane shear, and study on facesheet laminates. Two analytical models, corresponding to pure compression and elastic buckling failure, respectively, are provided for panels subject to out-of-plane compression. The facesheet and core …

Software Risk Assessment Based On Uml Models, Kalaivani Appukkutty Dec 2004

Software Risk Assessment Based On Uml Models, Kalaivani Appukkutty

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Risk is the possibility of suffering loss. Risks identified during the early stages of software development are easier and cheaper to handle by making changes to the software architecture. This thesis presents methodologies to assess software risk using Unified Modeling Language (UML) specifications of the software from the early design stages. We present methodologies to assess two types of software risk: Requirements-based risk and Performance-based risk. In assessing requirements-based risk, each requirement is mapped to a specific operational scenario in UML. The risk factor of a scenario in a failure mode is obtained by combining the probability of failure of …

Shrinkage And Strength Characterizations Of Concrete Containing Supplementary Cementing Materials, Aniruddha Chatterjee Dec 2004

Shrinkage And Strength Characterizations Of Concrete Containing Supplementary Cementing Materials, Aniruddha Chatterjee

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Considerable differences in drying shrinkage strains and compressive strengths are observed in HPC containing supplementary cementing materials from normal concrete (without any supplementary cementing material). The differences in these properties due to addition of supplementary cementing materials occur because of different quantity of C-S-H gel formation. This limits the application to HPC of standard prediction equation for shrinkage and strength of normal concrete.;Therefore in this study a novel technique has been used to estimate the C-S-H gel for cement pastes containing supplementary cementing materials in varying replacement proportions and combinations. New shrinkage and compressive strength models have been developed using …

Anomaly Based Intrusion Detection For Network Monitoring Using A Dynamic Honeypot., Jeff Hieb Dec 2004

Anomaly Based Intrusion Detection For Network Monitoring Using A Dynamic Honeypot., Jeff Hieb

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis proposes a network based intrusion detection approach using anomaly detection and achieving low configuration and maintenance costs. A honeypots is an emerging security tool that has several beneficial characteristics, one of which is that all traffic to it is anomalous. A dynamic honeypot reduces the configuration and maintenance costs of honeypot deployment. An anomaly based intrusion detection system with low configuration and maintenance costs can be constructed by simply observing the egress and ingress to a dynamic honeypot. This thesis explores the design and implementation of a dynamic honeypot using a variety of publicly available tools. The main …

Probing The Properties Of The Second Coordination Sphere Of Biologically Relevant Metal Complexes Using Amide Function., Lionel E. Cheruzel 1976-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation deals with various imidazole compounds with emphasis on hydrogen bond interactions and weaker intermolecular forces. New amide functionalized polyimidazole metal binding pockets are able to form intramolecular six-membered hydrogen bonded rings with apical ligands bonded to the metal. The design of such ligands has been successful in the stabilization and characterization of mononuclear Cu-OH and Cu-OOH species. The end-on Cu-OOH species was characterized by UV-visible(band at 365 nm with e = 1500 M-1cm-1), EPR, ESI-MS and Raman spectroscopy (vO-O = 854 cm-1 which shifts by 46 cm-1 upon 18O substitution). Simple imidazole ligands were synthesized by general Mannich-type …

Cases Of University Faculty Conceptions And Practices Of Teaching, Assessment And Action Research., Carol Dianne Raubenheimer 1959- Dec 2004

Cases Of University Faculty Conceptions And Practices Of Teaching, Assessment And Action Research., Carol Dianne Raubenheimer 1959-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Conceptions of teaching and learning held by faculty in higher education broadly reflect two dominant approaches, those that are teacher-focused and content oriented, and those that are student-focused and learner oriented (Entwistle, Skinner, Entwistle & Orr, 2000). Conceptions of teaching may be reflected in the pedagogical choices and practices of instructors, but this has not been well established at college level. Thus, an examination of such conceptions may advance the understanding of good teaching at the college level (Fernandez-Balboa & Stiehl, 1995). Using a case study approach this research (a) examined conceptions of teaching and learning, assessment, and action research …

Consistency Results For The Roc Curves Of Fused Classifiers, Kristopher S. Bjerkaas Dec 2004

Consistency Results For The Roc Curves Of Fused Classifiers, Kristopher S. Bjerkaas

Theses and Dissertations

The U.S. Air Force is researching the fusion of multiple classifiers. Given a finite collection of classifiers to be fused, one seeks a new classifier with improved performance. An established performance quantifier is the Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve, which allows one to view the probability of detection versus the probability of false alarm in one graph. Previous research shows that one does not have to perform tests to determine the ROC curve of this new fused classifier. If the ROC curve for each individual classifier has been determined, then formulas for the ROC curve of the fused classifier exist …

Design And Model Verification Of An Infrared Chromotomographic Imaging System, Daniel A. Lemaster Dec 2004

Design And Model Verification Of An Infrared Chromotomographic Imaging System, Daniel A. Lemaster

Theses and Dissertations

A prism chromotomographic hyperspectral imaging sensor is being developed to aid in the study of bomb phenomenology. Reliable chromotomographic reconstruction depends on accurate knowledge of the sensor specific point spread function over all wavelengths of interest. The purpose of this research is to generate the required point spread functions using wave optics techniques and a phase screen model of system aberrations. Phase screens are generated using the Richardson-Lucy algorithm for extracting point spread functions and Gerchberg-Saxton algorithm for phase retrieval. These phase screens are verified by comparing the modeled results of a blackbody source with measurements made using a chromotomographic …

The Kinetics Following Photolysis Of Nitrosyl Bromide, Lori A. Mahoney Dec 2004

The Kinetics Following Photolysis Of Nitrosyl Bromide, Lori A. Mahoney

Theses and Dissertations

One candidate for the development of a tunable laser in the mid-infrared for use as a defensive countermeasure against passive sensors exploits the nitric oxide (NO) transition at 5.4 μm. However, the difficulty with this mechanism is that when bromine (Br2) and NO are present in a mixture, nitrosyl bromide (BrNO) is also created. The absorption bands present in BrNO complicate the design of such a laser. This thesis determines the forward and reverse rate constants of the reaction of Br2 and NO to form BrNO following the photolysis of BrNO using Fourier Transform Infrared absorption spectroscopy. …

Effects Of Variable Contact Load On Fretting Fatigue Behavior Of Shot-Peened And Un-Peened Titanium Alloy, Chia-Hawa Lee Dec 2004

Effects Of Variable Contact Load On Fretting Fatigue Behavior Of Shot-Peened And Un-Peened Titanium Alloy, Chia-Hawa Lee

Theses and Dissertations

Fretting fatigue occurs between two components in contact under relative motion and reduces fatigue life when compared with plain fatigue. Shot-peening, on the other hand, is the most commonly used cold working process to improve material fatigue resistance in aeronautical industries. Nearly all work accomplished to date has assumed a constant contact load while investigating fretting fatigue. The primary goal of this study was to explore fretting fatigue behavior under constant and variable contact load configurations using both shot-peened and un-peened specimens made up of Ti-6Al-4V alloy. Contact loads were applied with four different frequencies. Applied axial loads were also …

Non-Cooperative Detection Of Ultra Wideband Signals, Brett D. Gronholz Dec 2004

Non-Cooperative Detection Of Ultra Wideband Signals, Brett D. Gronholz

Theses and Dissertations

Techniques for the non-cooperative (non-matched filter) detection of impulse-like ultra wideband signals using channelized receiver architectures are developed and evaluated. Each technique considered is modeled and simulations conducted to characterize detection performance, the results of which are compared with the detection performance of three receivers: the matched filter receiver, which provides optimum detection performance in AWGN; the radiometer, or energy detector; and the multi-aperture cross correlation receiver. It is shown that a channelized receiver (with no downconversion) can provide approximately 2.5 dB improvement over the radiometer when performing detection using the temporal-temporal matrix (TTM). The TTM processing technique provides the …

The second objective develops system modeling tools aiding similar analysis by other users. These objectives were accomplished by evaluating a selected group of output parameters to include overall system cost, mass, and power consumption, as well as the minimum detectable input level, system spurious free dynamic range, and selected beam spoilage parameters caused by the use of discrete phase shifters. A fixed number of designs were evaluated using simulation. The evaluation process examined input parameter …

Forensic Analysis Of Digital Image Tampering, Jonathan R. Sturak Dec 2004

Forensic Analysis Of Digital Image Tampering, Jonathan R. Sturak

Theses and Dissertations

The use of digital photography has increased over the past few years, a trend which opens the door for new and creative ways to forge images. The manipulation of images through forgery influences the perception an observer has of the depicted scene, potentially resulting in ill consequences if created with malicious intentions. This poses a need to verify the authenticity of images originating from unknown sources in absence of any prior digital watermarking or authentication technique. This research explores the holes left by existing research; specifically, the ability to detect image forgeries created using multiple image sources and specialized methods …

Use Of Cre Recombinase And Sb Transposase To Engineer Transgenic Zebrafish, Jie Dong Dec 2004

Use Of Cre Recombinase And Sb Transposase To Engineer Transgenic Zebrafish, Jie Dong

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Current transgenesis has become easier for certain species due to the recent development of exogenous non site-specific recombination systems such as Sleeping Beauty (SB) transposon, and site-specific recombination systems such as Cre-loxP. Such recombination systems overcame two major problems caused by conventional transgenesis, position effect and copy number effect. SB is a reconstructed fish transposon that has shown to efficiently insert transgenes into heterologous mammalian chromosomes. The Cre-loxP system is frequently used to delete a given sequence from the genome or to target the integration of foreign DNA. The use of both systems in combination, however, has not yet been …

Field Evidence For Geophysical Detection Of Subsurface Zones Of Enhanced Microbial Activity, Eliot A. Atekwana, Estella A. Atekwana, Franklyn D. Legall, R. V. Krishnamurthy Dec 2004

Field Evidence For Geophysical Detection Of Subsurface Zones Of Enhanced Microbial Activity, Eliot A. Atekwana, Estella A. Atekwana, Franklyn D. Legall, R. V. Krishnamurthy

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Geochemical data from closely spaced vertical intervals in a hydrocarbon-impacted aquifer were used to assess the relationship between bulk conductivity and zones of enhanced microbial activity. The bulk conductivity was measured using in situ vertical resistivity probes. Microbial activity was verified using terminal electron acceptors (nitrate, sulfate, iron, and manganese), dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), and major ion chemistry. Peaks in bulk conductivity in the aquifer overlapped with zones where nitrates and sulfates were depleted, total petroleum hydrocarbon, iron, manganese, dissolved ions, and DIC were elevated, suggesting a link between higher electrical conductivity and zones of enhanced microbial activity stimulated by …
