Sea Changes Ashore: The Ocean And Iceland's Herring Capital, Lawrence C. Hamilton, Steingrímur Jónsson, Helga Ögmundardóttir, Igor M. Belkin

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

The story of Siglufjörður (Siglufjordur), a north Iceland village that became the "Herring Capital of the World," provides a case study of complex interactions between physical, biological, and social systems. Siglufjörður's natural capital - a good harbor and proximity to prime herring grounds - contributed to its development as a major fishing center during the first half of the 20th century. This herring fishery was initiated by Norwegians, but subsequently expanded by Icelanders to such an extent that the fishery, and Siglufjörður in particular, became engines helping to pull the whole Icelandic economy. During the golden years of this "herring …

The Antebellum Political Background Of The Fourteenth Amendment, Garrett Epps Jan 2004

The Antebellum Political Background Of The Fourteenth Amendment, Garrett Epps

All Faculty Scholarship

Understanding the Fourteenth Amendment is the key question of Constitutional law, both as it pertains to individual rights and, in many areas, as it relates to questions of Congressional power as opposed to the reserved powers of the states. The Amendment is often disaggregated and read clause by clause - but the intellectual and political background of its framers suggests that the Amendment in fact forms a coherent whole and that reading it as a whole might be a fertile source of new meanings. The Amendment was written by politicians who had spent their careers deeply involved in anti-slavery politics. …

Self(Ish)-Fusion Thinking And Practice- A (Mainly) Visual Investigation Of Poly-Modal Art-Making, Pauline Amos Jan 2004

Self(Ish)-Fusion Thinking And Practice- A (Mainly) Visual Investigation Of Poly-Modal Art-Making, Pauline Amos

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

If it could be seen that a 'body of training' has a crucial impact on a creative practice, my own history of 'training' would be difficult to trace within any specific discipline or mode of self-expression. I have been 'trained' as a visual artist, actor, performance-artist, and to some extent, musician/sonic performer. This coexistence of modalities with associated meta-praxis, has in fact created a set of parallel dimensions embodied within a collective of theories as well as practices. On the one hand, this collective of practices has involved a view of myself (and what I make) as a form of …

Designing The Performative Object: A Study In Designing Mindful Interaction Through Artefacts, Kristina Niedderer Jan 2004

Designing The Performative Object: A Study In Designing Mindful Interaction Through Artefacts, Kristina Niedderer

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This thesis investigates the potential of design to intentionally mediate social interaction in ethical (mindful) ways. The subject of the study has evolved from observations and reflections on my own practice. In using the drinking vessel to explore the mediation of human face-to-face interaction through the artefact, the question arose whether some objects can influence interaction more actively than others. In particular, the question was whether and how an artefact can stimulate the user's behaviour by means of its function, and whether this stimulation can cause mindful reflection and interaction. The aim was to understand better the characteristics of this …

Licensing Health Care Professionals: Has The United States Outlived The Need For Medical Licensure?, Gregory Dolin Jan 2004

Licensing Health Care Professionals: Has The United States Outlived The Need For Medical Licensure?, Gregory Dolin

All Faculty Scholarship

With an expanding market for what is now known as "complimentary and alternative" medicine (CAM), states are increasingly facing the issue of who can and who should be allowed to practice medicine. Of necessity, this question also concerns whom patients may see to treat their ailments.

This paper will argue that the struggle to define who is and who is not licensed to practice medicine is rather fruitless and will always leave patients with less choice than they desire. Part II will review the history of licensure in the United States. Parts III and IV will focus on benefits and …

Time To Enter A "Do Not Resuscitate" Order On The National Resident Matching Program's Chart, Gregory Dolin Jan 2004

Time To Enter A "Do Not Resuscitate" Order On The National Resident Matching Program's Chart, Gregory Dolin

All Faculty Scholarship

This article focuses on the NRMP system and argues that the process is neither efficient nor pro-competitive. This article argues that Congress erred in bestowing an antitrust exemption on the NRMP and the participating institutions.

This article suggests that although the system may have been necessary to check the problem of early recruiting that was pervasive in the 1950s (similar to the one that plagued the federal judiciary until just two years ago), the system has outlived its usefulness. Part II will explain the Match's history and function and will discuss how the system makes participation in the Match inevitable …

Performance Estimation Of A Sip Based Push-To-Talk Service For 3g Wireless Networks, Eoin O'Regan Jan 2004

Performance Estimation Of A Sip Based Push-To-Talk Service For 3g Wireless Networks, Eoin O'Regan

Theses

Push To Talk (PTT) services have been in existence for several decades providing dispatch services via two-way radio such as walkie-talkies. For a number of years now PTT services have been available for use over mobile phone networks. These mobile PTT services have occupied a niche market with business users and have been provided on proprietary networks that do not enable roaming.

Over the past year there has been an explosion of interest in the concept of PTT provided over mobile networks using Internet Protocol (IP) technology. This service uses cellular access and radio resources more efficiently than circuit-switched cellular …

A Service-Based Architecture For Learning Management Systems Which Supports Personalisation And Collaboration, Markus Schmid Jan 2004

A Service-Based Architecture For Learning Management Systems Which Supports Personalisation And Collaboration, Markus Schmid

Theses

This work develops a service-based architecture for an extensible and customisable learning management system (LMS) runtime environment. The architecture mainly defines interfaces for the interaction of functional system components represented by loosely coupled distributed services. Services that represent functional components of the distributed LMS are called e-leaming services. In addition, underlying infrastructure services provide supportive functionality such as service-lookup within an institution. Users access the system using an LMS portal component that acts as a front-end for the LMS services.

While existing e-leaming environments provide a relatively good coverage of most of the functional requirements defined in this work, they …

Constructive Habituation As An Educational Approach To Process-Object Reification In Mathematics, Alonzo F. Peterson Jan 2004

Constructive Habituation As An Educational Approach To Process-Object Reification In Mathematics, Alonzo F. Peterson

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Sfard and Thompson (1994) state that what matters most is that educators develop ways of thinking, teaching, and learning mathematics. This study introduced constructive habituation, a new strategy developed to aid both students and teachers in the thinking, teaching, and learning of mathematics. Constructive habituation attempts to unite constructivist teaching methods aimed at supporting students’ conceptual understanding of content and habituationist teaching method aimed at establishing routine responses to routine tasks. This study is exploratory in nature, designed to investigate if constructive habituation is a more effective means than a traditional teaching method in helping students reach process-object reification as …

Optimization Of A Skewed Logistic Distribution With Respect To The Kolmogorov-Smirnov Test, James Charles Finney Jan 2004

Optimization Of A Skewed Logistic Distribution With Respect To The Kolmogorov-Smirnov Test, James Charles Finney

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The four-parameter kappa distribution (Hosking 1994) was analyzed with respect to the various possible shapes of the probability density function. The general form for the cumulative distribution function when both h and k are non-zero is: F(x) = { 1 - h [ 1 - k ( x - ξ ) / α ]1/k }1/h. The parameters h and k work together to define the function's shape, ξ affects location, and α is the scale parameter. A method of selecting parameters to minimize the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test statistic, D, was developed. The technique was first described for the …

An Integrative Model Of Clients' Decision To Adopt An Application Service Provider, Yurong Yao Jan 2004

An Integrative Model Of Clients' Decision To Adopt An Application Service Provider, Yurong Yao

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Application Services Providers (ASPs) exploit the economics of delivering commercial off-the-shelf software over the Internet to many dispersed users, but the decision-making process to adopt the ASP business model can be complex requiring a comprehensive consideration of various factors. As a new form of outsourcing, the ASP business model differs from traditional outsourcing models with respect to the attributes associated with vendors, clients, and applications. These differences are expected to demand decision models that are distinct from those in the traditional IS outsourcing. In this study, an integrative model for ASP adoption that incorporates economic determinants, strategic determinants, and social …

Ceria-Zirconia Oxide High Temperature Desulfurization Sorbent, Kwang Bok Yi Jan 2004

Ceria-Zirconia Oxide High Temperature Desulfurization Sorbent, Kwang Bok Yi

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

High temperature desulfurization of highly reducing coal-derived gases using ceria and ceria-zirconia sorbents is the primary object of this dissertation research. If H2S concentration is reduced to less than 1 ppmv the product gas may be used with fuel cells and downstream catalytic process. CeO2 is reduced to a non-stoichiometric oxide, which is superior to CeO2 in removing H2S. Moreover, ZrO2 addition to CeO2 to form a solid solution, Ce1-xZrxO2, increases the reducibility of CeO2. This should also result in improved desulfurization performance. Pure CeO2 and sorbents, both commercially available and prepared at LSU, were tested. XRD analysis indicated that …

A Historical Study Of The Emergence Of Social Movements: Case Study Of The Sierra Leone Women's Forum In The 1990s, Agnes Mariama Farma Jan 2004

A Historical Study Of The Emergence Of Social Movements: Case Study Of The Sierra Leone Women's Forum In The 1990s, Agnes Mariama Farma

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The emergence of the Women's Forum during the 1990's in Sierra Leone is analyzed using the political process model proposed by Douglas McAdam. The strength of the indigenous organizations, the political opportunities presented by the civil strife of the period and the emergence of insurgency consciousness on the part of the women of Sierra Leone were identified as significant in contributing to the success of the movement in bringing an end to the civil war and influencing the peace process to address women's issues, indicating the usefulness of this model in analyzing the emergence of social movements in the Sierra …

Modeling The Effects Of Rainfall Intensity And Deep Chiseling On Infiltration And Runoff Within Drainmod For Alluvial Soils, Daniel Nyabiba Moriasi Jan 2004

Modeling The Effects Of Rainfall Intensity And Deep Chiseling On Infiltration And Runoff Within Drainmod For Alluvial Soils, Daniel Nyabiba Moriasi

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Accurate hydrologic models are needed to aid engineers and researchers design, install and evaluate efficient and cost-effective agricultural water management systems to reduce risks associated with food production, and to reduce soil erosion and water pollution. One model used for the alluvial soils of Louisiana is DRAINMOD. This model does not accurately predict infiltration and runoff for the crusting-prone alluvial soils of Louisiana. The main goal of this study was to modify the current DRAINMOD model to incorporate the effects of rainfall intensity and deep chiseling to improve its estimation of infiltration and surface runoff. The second goal was to …

The Later Heidegger And Contemporary Theology Of God, Daniel Martino Jan 2004

The Later Heidegger And Contemporary Theology Of God, Daniel Martino

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Martin Heidegger was a central figure in 20th century Western philosophy. In evaluating his work from the perspective of the early 21st century it is clear that his influence crossed disciplinary lines. This work aims to address one area where Heidegger's thinking has had tremendous impact -- theology. Specifically, Heidegger's later writings are selectively examined in order to determine the bearing they have on the issue of God.

The route to God, in a strict confessional sense, is neither easy nor direct in the Heideggerian corpus. As a result, the first methodological tack used throughout this study establishes Heidegger's abiding …

An Assessment And Analysis Of Using Dedicated Short-Range Communications (Dsrc) Technology For Incident Detection On Rural Freeways, Joseph D. Crabtree Jan 2004

An Assessment And Analysis Of Using Dedicated Short-Range Communications (Dsrc) Technology For Incident Detection On Rural Freeways, Joseph D. Crabtree

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

This report describes an assessment of using dedicated short-range communications(DSRC) technology to perform travel time monitoring and automated incident detectionon a segment of rural freeway. The assessment used the CORSIM traffic simulation toolto simulate traffic and incidents on a segment of rural freeway. Output data from thesimulation was subjected to post-processing to produce the "probe and beacon" data thatwould be produced by a DSRC-based system. An incident detection algorithm wasdeveloped, which used a travel time threshold and a counter. Travel times exceeding thethreshold incremented the counter, while travel times below the threshold decrementedthe counter (unless it was at zero). An …

Probabilistic Databases And Their Applications, Wenzhong Zhao Jan 2004

Probabilistic Databases And Their Applications, Wenzhong Zhao

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Probabilistic reasoning in databases has been an active area of research during the last twodecades. However, the previously proposed database approaches, including the probabilistic relationalapproach and the probabilistic object approach, are not good fits for storing and managingdiverse probability distributions along with their auxiliary information. The work in this dissertation extends significantly the initial semistructured probabilistic databaseframework proposed by Dekhtyar, Goldsmith and Hawkes in [20]. We extend the formal SemistructuredProbabilistic Object (SPO) data model of [20]. Accordingly, we also extend the SemistructuredProbabilistic Algebra (SP-algebra), the query algebra proposed for the SPO model.Based on the extended framework, we have designed and implemented …

Optimization Of Blowing And Suction Control On Naca0012 Airfoil Using Genetic Algorithm With Diversity Control, Liang Huang Jan 2004

Optimization Of Blowing And Suction Control On Naca0012 Airfoil Using Genetic Algorithm With Diversity Control, Liang Huang

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Active control of the flow over an airfoil is an area of heightened interest in the aerospace community. Previous research on flow control design processes heavily depended on trial and error and the designers knowledge and intuition. Such an approach cannot always meet the growing demands of higher design quality in less time. Successful application of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to this kind of control problem critically depends on an efficient searching algorithm for design optimization. CFD in conjunction with Genetic Algorithms (GA) potentially offers an efficient and robust optimization method and is a promising solution for current flow control …
