The Effect Of An Altered Cytokinin Metabolism On Plant Development And C Ell Aging In Crop Plants, Ian Mcevoy Jan 2004

The Effect Of An Altered Cytokinin Metabolism On Plant Development And C Ell Aging In Crop Plants, Ian Mcevoy

Doctoral

Isopentenyl transferase (IPT) is an enzyme encoded by a bacterial gene that catalyzes the rate-limiting step in cytokinin biosynthesis. Under the control of senescence-associated promoter (pSAG12), isolated from Arabidopsis thaliana, it has been shown to delay senescence in several herbaceous species. Cytokinin synthesis begins at the onset of senescence and is then stopped when senescence ceases. This auto regulatory control of the transgene ensures normal development and morphology of the transformed plant, which may be affected in plants constitutively expressing ipt. In this study, it was investigated if an altered cytokinin metabolism, as a result of transformation by pSAG12: ipt, …

Multiple Experts: Scientific, Medical, Media And Lay Discourses On 'New Genetics', Clare Elizabeth Wilkinson Jan 2004

Multiple Experts: Scientific, Medical, Media And Lay Discourses On 'New Genetics', Clare Elizabeth Wilkinson

Other Faculty of Health Theses

The significance of public relationships with scientific and medical expertise has increasingly been highlighted as an area of importance in governmental policy formulation and scientific activities. Central to this relationship has been the role of the media, frequently depicted as increasing the strained communications between science, medicine and the public in the present UK 'crisis' of expertise. Sociological research has contributed to our understandings of science, medicine, the media and lay knowledge. The research presented in this thesis correlates these contributions. It focuses on 'new genetics' to elicit the views towards communication and understanding expressed by three groups; media professionals, …

Perceived Professional Needs Of Korean Science Teachers Majoring In Chemical Education And Their Preferences For Online And On-Site Training, Taehee Noh, Jeongho Cha, Sukjin Kang, Lawrence C. Scharmann

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

In this study, we investigated the perceived professional needs of Korean science teachers majoring in chemical education, and examined their preferences for online and on-site inservice teacher training programs. The results were also compared with those of preservice teachers. Participants were 120 secondary school teachers and 67 preservice teachers, whose majors were either chemical education or science education with emphasis in chemistry. A questionnaire consisting of a modified Science Teacher Inventory of Need and a section concerning respondents’ demographic information and their use of the Internet was administered. In contrast to previous studies, the perceived needs of Korean inservice and …

How Instructional Leadership Is Addressed In Educational Administration/Leadership Programs, Lolethia Jones Kibble Jan 2004

How Instructional Leadership Is Addressed In Educational Administration/Leadership Programs, Lolethia Jones Kibble

Dissertations

Problem

Instructional leadership is a major factor in school effectiveness and student achievement, yet it is not widely practiced by school principals. One of the contributing factors, identified in the literature, is a lack of skills and knowledge. Although there is a great deal of information about principal preparation programs, there is very little information on the preparation of school leaders in the practice of instructional leadership behaviors. The purpose of this study was to examine how instructional leadership is addressed in both traditional and restructured educational administration/leadership programs and to what extent this is related to institutional and demographic …

Environmental Snapshots From Ace‐Asia, Ralph Kahn, John Merrill, Et Al Jan 2004

Environmental Snapshots From Ace‐Asia, Ralph Kahn, John Merrill, Et Al

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

On five occasions spanning the Asian Pacific Regional Aerosol Characterization Experiment (ACE‐Asia) field campaign in spring 2001, the Multiangle Imaging Spectroradiometer spaceborne instrument took data coincident with high‐quality observations by instruments on two or more surface and airborne platforms. The cases capture a range of clean, polluted, and dusty aerosol conditions. With a three‐stage optical modeling process, we synthesize the data from over 40 field instruments into layer‐by‐layer environmental snapshots that summarize what we know about the atmospheric and surface states at key locations during each event. We compare related measurements and discuss the implications of apparent discrepancies, at a …

A Comparison Between Observations And Mm5 Simulations Of The Marine Atmospheric Boundary Layer Across A Temperature Front, Qingtao Song, Tetsu Hara, Peter C. Cornillon, Carl A. Friehe

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

Simulations, made with the fifth-generation Pennsylvania State University (PSU)–National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) Mesoscale Model (MM5), of the response of the marine atmospheric boundary layer (MABL) as air moves over a sharp SST front are compared with observations made during the Frontal Air–Sea Interaction Experiment (FASINEX) in the North Atlantic subtropical convergence zone. The purpose of undertaking these comparisons was to evaluate the performance of MM5 in the vicinity of an SST front and to determine which of the planetary boundary layer (PBL) parameterizations available best represents MABL processes. FASINEX provides an ideal dataset for this work in that …

Environmental Law, Eleventh Circuit Survey, Travis M. Trimble Jan 2004

Environmental Law, Eleventh Circuit Survey, Travis M. Trimble

Scholarly Works

In 2003 the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit decided two cases concerning the Clean Air Act, holding that provisions allowing the Environmental Protection Agency (“EPA”) to address compliance issues through the issuance of administrative compliance orders are unconstitutional2 and that the Clean Air Act does not waive the United States’ defense of sovereign immunity in an action for punitive penalties for past violations of air pollution laws. The court also considered for the first time the circumstances under which a state enforcement action would preempt a citizen suit under the Clean Water Act. This Article also …

Multi-Objective Conjunctive Use Optimization, H. C. Fayad, Richard C. Peralta Jan 2004

Multi-Objective Conjunctive Use Optimization, H. C. Fayad, Richard C. Peralta

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper presents a simulation/optimization model based on artificial neural networks and genetic algorithms for solving multi-objective conjunctive water use problems. The model simulates and optimizes water flows in a hydraulically connected reservoir-stream-aquifer system. It is a powerful tool to help water managers and authorities in developing conjunctive water management strategies and evaluating tradeoffs between conflicting goals.

Optimization Modeling For Groundwater And Conjunctive Use Water Policy Development, Richard C. Peralta, R. Shulstad Jan 2004

Optimization Modeling For Groundwater And Conjunctive Use Water Policy Development, Richard C. Peralta, R. Shulstad

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

Planners must sometimes decide how to restrict or reduce groundwater use to prevent unacceptable future problems. Often there are several alternatives (policies). Comparing policies can involve formulating a sustained groundwater yield optimization problem and computing an optimal groundwater pumping strategy for each. This is easy via the SOMOS simulation/optimization (S/O) model. Subsequent analysis can include: flow simulation to predict transient water level response to pumping; and economic evaluation to estimate costs and returns. Two examples predict the best consequences of potential physical and legal management policies for alluvial and valley basin fill aquifers hydraulically linked to surface waters. Results show …

Magnetic Resonance Imaging Of The Human Inferior Vena Cava During Lower Body Negative Pressure, Venu Madhav Pothini Jan 2004

Magnetic Resonance Imaging Of The Human Inferior Vena Cava During Lower Body Negative Pressure, Venu Madhav Pothini

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) was used to determine changes in the size of the Inferior Vena Cava (IVC) as a result of blood pooling induced by lower body negative pressure (LBNP). Images of the IVC of supine human subjects (10 males, 10 females) were obtained under four conditions: 1) steady-state 0 mmHg LBNP, 2) steady-state –35 mmHg LBNP, 3) ramping from 0 to –35 mmHg LBNP, 4) ramping from –35 to 0 mmHg LBNP. Volumes for a given IVC segment were obtained under the first two conditions during both end inspiration and end expiration breath-holds. Inferior Vena Cava widths were …

Sea Changes Ashore: The Ocean And Iceland's Herring Capital, Lawrence C. Hamilton, Steingrímur Jónsson, Helga Ögmundardóttir, Igor M. Belkin

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

The story of Siglufjörður (Siglufjordur), a north Iceland village that became the "Herring Capital of the World," provides a case study of complex interactions between physical, biological, and social systems. Siglufjörður's natural capital - a good harbor and proximity to prime herring grounds - contributed to its development as a major fishing center during the first half of the 20th century. This herring fishery was initiated by Norwegians, but subsequently expanded by Icelanders to such an extent that the fishery, and Siglufjörður in particular, became engines helping to pull the whole Icelandic economy. During the golden years of this "herring …

The Antebellum Political Background Of The Fourteenth Amendment, Garrett Epps Jan 2004

The Antebellum Political Background Of The Fourteenth Amendment, Garrett Epps

All Faculty Scholarship

Understanding the Fourteenth Amendment is the key question of Constitutional law, both as it pertains to individual rights and, in many areas, as it relates to questions of Congressional power as opposed to the reserved powers of the states. The Amendment is often disaggregated and read clause by clause - but the intellectual and political background of its framers suggests that the Amendment in fact forms a coherent whole and that reading it as a whole might be a fertile source of new meanings. The Amendment was written by politicians who had spent their careers deeply involved in anti-slavery politics. …
