Images Of Naples: Class, Gender And The Southern Character In Hester Piozzi’S Observations And Reflections, Kelley A. Cason
Images Of Naples: Class, Gender And The Southern Character In Hester Piozzi’S Observations And Reflections, Kelley A. Cason
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
On the tenth of January 1786, Mrs. Hester Lynch Piozzi recorded her entrance into the city of Naples, Italy in her travel journal Observations and Reflections Made in the Course of a Journey Through France, Italy, and Germany. She emphasized the importance of her experience in Naples by stating that: "among all the new ideas I have acquired since England lessened to my sight upon the sea, those gained at Naples will be the last to quit me." This British woman's stay in Naples was but a brief period within her three year long Grand Tour, yet it represented …

An Analysis Of Key Deer Herbivory On Forest Communities In The Lower Florida Keys, Mark Allan Barrett
An Analysis Of Key Deer Herbivory On Forest Communities In The Lower Florida Keys, Mark Allan Barrett
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The Key deer (Odocoileus virginianus clavium) population has increased from less than 80 individuals in the 1950s to approximately 700 by 2000. Over two-thirds of the Key deer population resides on two islands out of a potential 26 islands within their range. The skewed distribution resulted in high deer densities on Big Pine, No Name, and Big Munson keys. The objective of the study was to evaluate the effects of Key deer herbivory in mangrove, buttonwood, hammock and pineland habitats between islands with low, medium, and high densities of deer. Host-plant choice trials were conducted to determine Key …
Transnational Social Movements And The War On Drugs, Ben Mostyn
Transnational Social Movements And The War On Drugs, Ben Mostyn
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This thesis discusses the growing body of work on transnational social movement theory. Transnational social movement theory is an attempt to adapt social movement theory to the changing nature of international relations. To further this theory, I test the hypothesis that "a transnational social movement has caused drug law reforms at the local and state level".
To test this hypothesis I undertake a case study of one local and one national drug law reform. The drug laws in the state of New South Wales, Australia were reformed in 1999 to allow heroin addicts to use a medical center to inject …

Grounding Design In Complexity., Silvia Pizzocaro
Grounding Design In Complexity., Silvia Pizzocaro
DRS Biennial Conference Series
As the frontier of present interdisciplinary sciences, complexity thinking can provide models to approach design research issues. Adaptation to the demands of a complex world requires to generate knowledge, and design knowledge, operating within a context of complexity, more than ever requires expanded and integrated ways of thought. Although the relationship between design and complexity has been explored for decades, the theory of complexity has only recently started to influence the debate in the professional community. Considering design as a wide dimension of making and planning disciplines, here it will be assumed not only that design theory and design thinking …

Putting Humpty Dumpty Back Together: Pricing In Anticommons Property Arrangements, Ben Depoorter, Sven Vanneste
Putting Humpty Dumpty Back Together: Pricing In Anticommons Property Arrangements, Ben Depoorter, Sven Vanneste
George Mason University School of Law Working Papers Series
Recently, a new theory has drawn considerable attention in the literature on common property. A number of scholars have pointed to the danger of excessive propertization in the context of what are termed "anticommons" property regimes. Although this theory has found its way into numerous legal and economic applications, the empirical and cognitive foundations of the theory of fragmentation remain unexplored. Based on experimental data, this Article conducts an investigation into the social and personal processes involved in the anticommons.
The results confirm the theoretical proposition that anticommons deadweight losses increase with the degree of complementarity between individual parts and …

The Design Of The Edge As Cultural Activity: Towards A Dislocation Of The Greek Logos., Konstantinos Ioannidis
The Design Of The Edge As Cultural Activity: Towards A Dislocation Of The Greek Logos., Konstantinos Ioannidis
DRS Biennial Conference Series
The vital relation between coastline and human emotion has been projected within every possible rhetoric means (from poetry and painting to literature and cinema) but never before had this relation played the most affective role to our behavior than nowadays where cities are determined to return these areas back to citizens and restore all these notions-meanings that have, so violently, been removed from the urban waterfront as a result of the socio-economic changes of the last decades. But in most times this effort is muddied by amateurish attempts at generalization with standardized architectural practices which develop more or less customary …
What Is The Future Of Interactive Multi-User Systems?, Mark Palmer
What Is The Future Of Interactive Multi-User Systems?, Mark Palmer
DRS Biennial Conference Series
The research objective concerns the creation of genuine multi-user systems. This work arises from the creation of immersive systems and the philosophical critique of the assumptions made by discourses that seek to understand the digital. Although in philosophical terms this has focused on an immanent rather than transcendent ontology it is also possible to understand this approach through the ‘discoveries’ of complexity theory; concepts through which research can develop practical strategies that can be employed in the creation of these systems.
The Creative Process In Practice Based Design Research., Kaja Tooming
The Creative Process In Practice Based Design Research., Kaja Tooming
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Design research, especially practice-based design research is a relatively new field. One of the most important inquiries in this area is how practical experiments can promote and develop theoretical enquiry. In particular, could the artistic or design experiment function as a legitimate "context of discovery" within research so that the practical results of that experimentation are both themselves an integral part of the research and, when analyzed as to their implications, contribute to theory-generation? My aim in this paper is to illuminate the possibility of practice-based design research by means of a concrete example where the experimental production of new …
A Compare Study On The Construction Principles Of Chinese Characters And The Product Semantics., Ya-Chen Kuo, Dengchuan Cai
A Compare Study On The Construction Principles Of Chinese Characters And The Product Semantics., Ya-Chen Kuo, Dengchuan Cai
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Both product semantics and construction principles of Chinese characters are techniques using for form creating. Product semantics was used for interpreting product meanings by product designers and was prospered since 1980s. The construction principles of Chinese characters were a set of methods for creating Chinese characters which were generalized by Xushen around 100 AD. Product semantics includes five principles: metaphor, simile, metonymy, allegory, and analogy, while the construction principles of Chinese characters are: physical resemblance principle (Xiang-Xing), indication principle (Zhi-Shi), implication principle (Hui-Yi), principle in combination with shape and pronunciation (Xing- Sheng), principle in combination analogy principle (Zhuan-Zhu), and substitute …
Architecture In The Space Between., Scott Gowans, Richard M Wright
Architecture In The Space Between., Scott Gowans, Richard M Wright
DRS Biennial Conference Series
The question for architects is always how to begin. This proposal attempts to illustrate a design methodology that is characterised by its attention to non-traditional generators. The focus of the paper is the definition of an innovative design process characterised by the production of an architectonic language through the observation of the ephemeral and the transitory (the quanta of place), and which pays cognisance to the realization of a three-dimensional narrative, placing value upon the products of investigation as well as the resultant design. As the title suggests the process outlined concerns itself with the examination of the ephemeral, the …
