Global Changes In Regulating Corporate Auditors: A Comparative Assessment, Richard Thompson Ainsworth

Auditor independence was a global concern of financial regulators in the 1990's. Some observers saw this in a positive light, a natural development. Adjusting auditor independence rules was a manifestation of global convergence in corporate governance structures. New rules, especially rules leaning toward a harmonized system were welcome.

There was a more sobering view. This view held that global regulators were less concerned with convergence than they were with a sense of impending disaster. Things had gone too far. Significant, maybe even radical change was needed. The independence of corporate auditors had eroded; trust had been fundamentally compromised in the …

Five resorts in East Tennessee--Montvale Springs and the Wonderland Hotel in the Smokies, Tate Spring in the Holston River Valley, Unaka Springs on the Nolichucky River, and the Cloudland Hotel at the summit of Roan Mountain--stand testament to the proposition that their region engaged fully with areas outside southern Appalachia. Their origins, clientele, and health and leisure offerings followed those of other resorts of the same time period. Moreover, the effects of national socioeconomic trends on the hotels serve as a contradiction to the stereotype of southern Appalachia as an isolated region barricaded from the outside world by mountainous topography. …

This study examined the use of historical names vs. corporate names of stadiums by newspapers in Major League Baseball game stories. The study includes a sample of stories from seven major league teams from the first season that each team played in a corporate-named stadium after playing the preceding year in a historically-named park. A content analysis of 725 newspaper articles was performed. Spectroscopic studies have been used to describe the mechanism of the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide by solutions of a dimeric Cu(II) complex of a dissymetric Schiff base, [CuSALAD]₂.H₂O, and imidazole or methyl substituted imidazoles, B, which form monomeric CuSALAD.B₂ complexes, in aqueous ethanol solvent. Freezing point depression and vapor pressure lowering studies were carried out to confirm the dimeric nature of the [CuSALAD]₂.H₂O complex that had been previously reported. In the United States, osteoporosis results in about 1.5 million annual fractures, costing approximately $15 billion. Calcitonin is safe and effective in slowing osteoporotic bone loss, but its effect is transient. The current studies were designed to explore the dose-dependent effects of salmon calcitonin on bone turnover in ovariectomized rats and to determine if the decrease in therapeutic effectiveness of calcitonin demonstrated over time with higher doses is due to oversuppression of bone turnover. Doses of 5, 15, & 50 IU/kg BW/day of calcitonin were compared to placebo in 12-week-old ovariectomized and sham-ovariectomized Sprague-Dawley rats for 24 weeks. The spinal …

The practice of using anesthetized patients to teach pelvic exams on female patients in university hospitals has been well documented for years. A 1992 study showed that 37 percent of U.S. and Canadian medical schools allowed students to use anesthetized women without their consent to learn how to perform pelvic exams. Anecdotal accounts in the U.S. confirm that men are not immune from such indignities. Some of today's most important questions regard complex dynamical systems with many interacting components. Network models provide a means to gain insight into such systems. This thesis focuses on a network model based upon the Gray-Scott cubic autocatalytic reaction-diffusion system that manifests transient spatiotemporal chaos. Motivated by recent studies on the small-world topology discovered by Watts and Strogatz, the network's original regular ring topology was modified by the addition of a few irregular connections. A survey of ecotourists in the Valdivian Temperate Forests ecoregion of southern Chile is used to determine if the experience and activity preferences of the market match what is being developed at local community-based ecotourism projects. It also compares the motivations of the same market with the motivations outlined in the definition of ecotourism. Survey design was based on a literature review, and observations and key-informant interviews collected in the study area. The Alaska North Slope is a potential candidate for the Gas to Liquid (GTL) technology. With over 38 TCF of natural gas reserves stranded on the Alaska North Slope, the GTL technology is considered as a possible method of harnessing the abundant resources. Measurement Of Electron Density In The Earth's Magnetosphere Using Discrete Whistler Mode Echoes Observed On The Image Satellite, Jingbo Li

In this thesis, a new whistler mode sounding method has been developed to measure magnetospheric electron density using the RPI instrument on the IMAGE satellite. During the 2000-2002 period, RPI frequently recorded discrete whistler mode (WM) echoes in the ~10-400 kHz frequency range when IMAGE was at low altitudes (<7000 km) in the inner plasmasphere or near its perigee in the southern hemisphere. Most discrete cases were observed in the wintertime in the southern hemisphere during the local morning or nighttime. Ray tracing simulations indicate that the discrete echoes may result from reflections of RPI signals from the earth-ionosphere boundary. By comparing the measured and calculated time dispersion of discrete WM echoes, it is possible to determine the plasma density along the ray path as well as the nonducted or ducted modes of propagation. The ray tracing simulations were carried out for 8 cases observed in the year 2002 when discrete echoes were accompanied by Z mode echoes. The 8 cases were chosen to cover the maximum and minimum local electron densities, which varied from ~300 - 4000 el/cc at the satellite location as measured from Z mode echoes. The simulations showed that the electron densities at the F2 layer peak (~250 km altitude) varied from 1 x 10⁵ to 7 X 10⁵ el/ cc for all the cases. The extrapolated electron density of the calculations at ~4000 km altitude varied from ~200 - 2000 el/cc (L <4) and ~60 - 1000 el/cc (L> 4). The extrapolated electron density at ~8000 km altitude ranged from ~100 -1000 el/cc (L <4) and from 20 - 60 el/cc (L> 4). These results are in general consistent with previous observations of plasma density in the low altitude magnetosphere. The northern foothills of the Alaska Range form a northward-convex salient at the apex of this orogen and the Denali fault. Despite the proximity of the northern foothills to the Denali fault and several historic large-magnitude earthquakes, the tectonic framework of this region has not been well-studied. A distinct pattern of east-trending folds and faults exists in both the bedrock and the geomorphic features. To assess the active structures of the region, I interpreted previous geologic mapping, developed cross-sections across the foothills belt, analyzed topographic and stream profiles, mapped the sequence of Quaternary fluvial terraces, and performed GPS transects across …

The non-protein amino acid a-aminoisobutyric acid (Aib) occurs naturally in soil. Burkholderia cepacia utilizes Aib as a sole nitrogen source by virtue of a 2,2-dialkylglycine decarboxylase, which is encoded by the dgdA gene. In this study, 30 prokaryotes were cultured on minimal media containing Aib as the sole nitrogen source and identified by 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Several attempts were made to clone dgd genes from these organisms. Plasmid libraries were constructed in E. coli from DNA isolated from four Aib-utilizing bacteria. Libraries were screened for clones which demonstrated the ability to grow on Aib containing media and therefore contained …

In the Alaskan boreal forest, black spruce (Picea mariana) is the forest type most severely limited by nitrogen mineralization. Nitrogen cycling in upland black spruce forests of the Interior is affected by the interactions between permafrost, soil climate, and litter quality. Permafrost and soil climate also play a significant role in nitrogen acquisition of shrubs, which are important for biomass turnover and element cycling in the understory.
