Expression Of The Glossina Proteolytic Lectin (Gpl) Gene In Tsetse Flies And Other Haematophagous Arthropods, Marion Burugu Warigia Jan 2004

Expression Of The Glossina Proteolytic Lectin (Gpl) Gene In Tsetse Flies And Other Haematophagous Arthropods, Marion Burugu Warigia

All Master’s Theses

African animal trypanosomosis, transmitted by the tsetse fly (Glossina spp.) remains a major constraint to food security in areas of Africa that hold the continent's greatest potential for expanded agriculture production. The flies also transmit the parasite responsible for human sleeping sickness. Other haematophagous arthropods like stable flies also transmit trypanosomes mechanically. Mechanical transmission only accounts for a small percentage (-16 % ) of the trypanosomes transmission since the haematophagous arthropods do not provide an environment for tr)-panosome development within their tissues unlike in tsetse flies. The life cycle of the parasitic African trypanosome in its invertebrate vector begins when …

Efficacy Of Xanthopimpla Stemmator Against Selected Lepidopteran Pest And Its Interaction With Pupal Endoparasitoid Pediobius Furvus In Graminaceous Plants In Kenya, Jamleck Muturi Jan 2004

Efficacy Of Xanthopimpla Stemmator Against Selected Lepidopteran Pest And Its Interaction With Pupal Endoparasitoid Pediobius Furvus In Graminaceous Plants In Kenya, Jamleck Muturi

All Master’s Theses

Chilo partellus (Swinhoe) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) is a major pest and a threat to cultivated poaceous plants in many parts of Africa. The adverse ecological and environmental effects as well as the cost of chemical insecticides commonly used in its control, besides its limitations makes it necessary to explore environmentally friendly control methods. Classical biological control is one important approach in the . control of exotic pests. A larval parasitoid Cotesia flavipes Cameron (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) was introduced in Kenya from Pakistan against C. partellus. Though, it has reduced borer density in overall by 32% and by 55% for C. partellus, its …

Management Of Marine Wildlife Disturbance, C. Kelly, G. A. Glegg, C. D. Speedie Jan 2004

Management Of Marine Wildlife Disturbance, C. Kelly, G. A. Glegg, C. D. Speedie

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

In recent years, concerns have been raised about the health and status of a range of marine species in UK waters, including the bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) and basking shark (Cetorhinus maximus). Disturbance and harassment from increasing inshore leisure traffic and a fascinated public have been identified as potential threats to these large marine species. This concern is coupled with a legislative framework that is perceived to be less effective in protecting key species than it could be, and difficult to enforce. This study examined the extent of anthropogenic disturbance to a range of marine wildlife in inshore waters around …

Yale Kamisar: Warrior Scholar, Francis A. Allen Jan 2004

Yale Kamisar: Warrior Scholar, Francis A. Allen

Michigan Law Review

My association with Yale Kamisar dates back to the 1950s. At that time I became aware of the interesting publications of a young faculty member at the University of Minnesota. The articles were well done, most of them dealing with the Supreme Court's notable expansion of constitutional doctrine relating to criminal procedure, then at full tide, a field in which I also was writing. In addition, Yale had published a remarkable article on the subject of euthanasia, impressive for the thoroughness of its research and the clarity and force of its argument. Fortunately, I decided to write to Yale and …

Yale Kamisar: Collaborator, Colleague, And Friend, Jesse H. Choper Jan 2004

Yale Kamisar: Collaborator, Colleague, And Friend, Jesse H. Choper

Michigan Law Review

Yale Kamisar was absent when I was first interviewed by a number of faculty members from the University of Minnesota Law School where he was then teaching. These sessions took place between Christmas and New Year's in 1959 (when I was a third-year student at Penn), at the annual meeting of the Association of American Law Schools, that year in St. Louis. Yale had planned to be there, I was told, but cancelled because he was behind schedule in completing an article. So while I didn't meet him on that occasion, I surely learned what would ring familiar many times …

Northern Range Extensions For Caprella Scaura Templeton, 1836 (Crustacea: Amphipoda: Caprellidae) On The Florida Gulf Coast And In South Carolina, John M. Foster, Richard W. Heard, David M. Knott Jan 2004

Northern Range Extensions For Caprella Scaura Templeton, 1836 (Crustacea: Amphipoda: Caprellidae) On The Florida Gulf Coast And In South Carolina, John M. Foster, Richard W. Heard, David M. Knott

Gulf and Caribbean Research

Previous northwestern Atlantic records for the caprellid amphipod Caprella scaura Templeton, 1836 were confined to St. Croix (US Virgin Islands), St. Barthélemy, and Puerto Rico, islands bordering the northern Caribbean Sea. Based on recent collections, C. scaura is now reported from the Gulf of Mexico (St. Andrew Bay, Florida) and the US east coast (Charleston Harbor, South Carolina). These constitute the first records for this apparently non-indigenous species in waters of the continental eastern United States, establishing considerable northern range extensions for C. scaura in the northwest Atlantic.

The Determinants And Implications Of Customer Satisfaction And Loyalty In Web-Based Commerce: An Empirical Analysis, Samuel Otim Jan 2004

The Determinants And Implications Of Customer Satisfaction And Loyalty In Web-Based Commerce: An Empirical Analysis, Samuel Otim

Theses

The study was undertaken to categorize and assess the relative importance of various factors in determining customers' evaluation of the overall online shopping experience (customer satisfaction) and their intention to provide continued patronage (remain loyal) to the pertinent online stores. Furthermore, the study also investigated the effects of customer loyalty and satisfaction on revenue. Various hypotheses were formulated and tested using empirical methods. The results from the study imply that web site design factors may lead to discretionary customer loyalty but have no significant effect in fostering customer satisfaction. Discretionary customer loyalty is a product of shopping convenience; thus, web …

Institutional Development Of Water Users Associations In Kyrgyzstan, Aida Alymbaeva Jan 2004

Institutional Development Of Water Users Associations In Kyrgyzstan, Aida Alymbaeva

Theses

Irrigation is of great importance for the agriculturally-predominant country of Kyrgyzstan, and the adequate operation and maintenance (O&M) of irrigation systems is required to support agricultural productivity in the country. A process of irrigation management transfer from the government to farm-based Water Users Associations (WUAs) has been pursued in the country for about a decade, but the results of institutionalization of WUAs are mixed. This thesis aims to explore the factors enabling the development of WUAs to manage O&M of irrigation infrastructure and ensure equitable and reliable water distribution to farmers. The research results show that WUAs are still too …

On Kamisar, Killing, And The Future Of Physician-Assisted Death, Norman L. Cantor Jan 2004

On Kamisar, Killing, And The Future Of Physician-Assisted Death, Norman L. Cantor

Michigan Law Review

Tens - perhaps hundreds - of thousands of trees could have been spared over the last forty-five years had opponents of physician-assisted death only been content to let Yale Kamisar be their exclusive spokesperson. Their movement would have lost no significant substance or persuasive force, for Kamisar's 1958 article - Some Non-Religious Views Against Proposed 'Mercy-Killing' Legislation - presaged the shape and content of the subsequent forty-five year debate over legalizing physician-assisted death ("PAD" ). Kamisar's article preceded by years the development of a whole jurisprudence relating to the withholding/withdrawing of life-sustaining medical treatment ("LSMT") and the administration of pain-relief …

Stories About Miranda, George C. Thomas Iii Jan 2004

Stories About Miranda, George C. Thomas Iii

Michigan Law Review

It is no exaggeration to say that Yale Kamisar was present at the creation of Miranda v. Arizona. To be sure, the seeds of Miranda had been sown in earlier cases, particularly Escobedo v. Illinois, but Escobedo was a Sixth Amendment right to counsel case. Professor Kamisar first saw the potential for extending the theory of Escob edo to the Fifth Amendment right against compelled self-incrimination. Escob edo theorized that a healthy criminal justice system requires that the accused know their rights and are encouraged to exercise them. The Escobedo Court read history to teach that no system …
