This amicus brief was filed in DOL v. Sun Valley Orchards by Professors Alan Morrison, Rob Glicksman, Richard Pierce, Peter Strauss and Jeffrey Lubbers. Amici argue that the Supreme Court should reverse the Third Circuit’s decision that DOL lacks the power to adjudicate disputes involving the safety and adequacy of the housing, food, and transportation provided by employers to non-citizen temporary agricultural workers. The Third Circuit’s holding was based on its belief that the constitution confers the power to adjudicate such disputes exclusively on Article III courts.

With increasing frequency and intensity, courts and commentators have advanced a doctrine of church autonomy that shields matters of internal church affairs from judicial scrutiny. Judges and scholars have invoked the doctrine in cases that involve disputes over property, employment, and governance of religious institutions. When applied, the doctrine ordinarily requires the dismissal of suits by aggrieved employees, congregants, or affiliated religious entities, thereby leaving employment and property disputes to unreviewable resolution by church authorities.

Precise calibration of radio telescope beams and gains is a central requirement for 21 cm intensity mapping experiments, which aim to measure large scale cosmological structure through the redshifted emission line of neutral hydrogen. Bright astrophysical foregrounds dominate the sky at these frequencies, and separating them from the cosmological signal demands precise control over instrumental systematics, particularly the telescope beam and its frequency-dependent response. Existing aerial calibration sources are incoherent broadband emitters, detectable only as total power. They provide no direct phase information and suffer from poor sensitivity in low signal-to-noise regimes.

Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from grazing ruminants represent a significant component of U.S. agricultural emissions. However, enteric methane (CH4) from cow– calf systems on extensive rangelands pose substantial measurement and management challenges. The Northern Great Plains (NGP) supports nearly one-quarter of the U.S. beef cow population, yet regionally representative, herd-level enteric emission data from commercial ranches remain limited. Metallic materials exhibit process–structure–property relationships that arise from physical mechanisms operating across multiple length and time scales. Atomistic processes control diffusion, thermal response, and interfacial behavior; mesoscale mechanisms govern grain morphology, interface migration, and microstructure evolution; full-field crystal-plasticity calculations resolve heterogeneous mechanical fields; and continuum-scale finite-element (FE) models connect material response to component-level deformation, damage, and performance. Because no single simulation method can resolve all of these mechanisms, predictive modeling requires a framework in which information obtained at one scale can be transferred to the next. Background: Postoperative seroma formation represents a significant complication following posterior lumbar spine decompression (PLSD) that can compress neural structures, cause radiculopathy, and serve as potential infection sources. This study evaluated the clinical characteristics and therapeutic approaches for seroma formation after posterior lumbar decompression procedures.

Methods: An observational study was conducted on 140 patients aged 18 years and older who underwent elective PLSD. Physical restoration of damaged photographic film causes more damage. Also, existing non-invasive digital restoration of film negatives does not produce print-quality optical images. Instead, they produce X-ray projections, which are not the same as optical projections. This thesis addresses these problems and establishes a framework that can digitally restore old, damaged films without the need to open them physically. Virtual Unwrapping is an existing pipeline that has proven itself over the last couple of decades to work on unopenable papyrus scrolls, like the Herculaneum Scrolls. As modern society becomes more dependent on these systems, understanding and mitigating the impacts of space weather has become increasingly important. The widespread proliferation of hate speech on social media platforms poses significant challenges for content moderation and user safety, requiring automated systems that are simultaneously accurate, efficient, and capable of fine-grained distinctions. This thesis investigates hate speech detection through five published manuscripts organized into two complementary threads: binary detection (hateful vs. non-hateful) and multiclass detection across demographic targeting categories. The United States Attorney  General, state attorneys general, and high-ranking officials in their offices, like all lawyers, are subject to rules of professional conduct.  Increasingly,  when they  push the  boundaries of  these  rules and other well-established  professional  norms,  individuals  and  organizations  are  filing state  lawyer  disciplinary  grievances  against  them.  While  some  see  troubling conduct  by  these  high-ranking  legal  officers,  others  view  these  disciplinary grievances  as  politically  motivated.  State  lawyer  disciplinary  authorities  often try to avoid addressing these grievances. Pregnancy physiology may impact indicators of hydration, affecting exposure assessment in gestational studies with urinary chemical biomarkers.

Methods:

We aimed to characterize hydration and demonstrate the impact of different methods for standardizing urinary chemical biomarker concentrations on exposure descriptives in the Human Placenta and Phthalates Study (n = 303, 2017-2020), a prospective pregnancy cohort with eight study visits between 12 and 38 weeks of gestation. We assessed trajectories and predictors of hydration using urine flow rate (UFR) and specific gravity (SG). Quantum machine learning (QML) has become an optimistic avenue of harnessing quantum computation in data-driven modeling, especially of issues with high dimensionality and complicated correlations. Current methods are generally based on fixed or over-parameterized quantum circuits, and hence restricted to scalability as well as unproductive optimization in real-world hardware. This chapter introduces a hybrid quantum-classical learning system that is adaptive and provides principled quantum data encoding, architecture-conscious variational circuit design and resource-optimal optimization. Deeply virtual exclusive scattering processes (DVES) serve as precise probes of nucleon quark and gluon distributions in coordinate space. These distributions are derived from generalized parton distributions (GPDs) via Fourier transform relative to proton momentum transfer. QCD factorization theorems enable DVES to be parameterized by Compton form factors (CFFs), which are convolutions of GPDs with perturbatively calculable kernels. Accurate extraction of CFFs from DVCS, benefiting from interference with the Bethe–Heitler (BH) process and a simpler final state structure, is essential for inferring GPDs. The increasing abundance of ticks poses a growing public health concern due to heightened human exposure to tick bites. The lone star tick (Amblyomma americanum: Ixodida: Ixodidae), a common human-biting species in the United States, has expanded its range in recent years. However, how its different life stages vary across time, habitats, and locations remains insufficiently understood. We analyzed tick abundance data collected in southeastern Virginia between 2009 and 2018, focusing on larval, nymphal, and adult life stages. This article poses an alternative non-Anglophone starting point for twenty-first century maximalism through the Latin American Boom and “la novela total” that is its crowning achievement. Among such works are Gabriel García Márquez’s One Hundred Years of Solitude (1967) and Carlos Fuentes’s Terra Nostra (1975). The term’s 1960s conception by Peruvian author Mario Vargas Llosa predates Thomas Pynchon as figurehead for maximalist theorizing within First World academic environments that control the conversation. Contemporary societal trends indicate many young adults rely on their families for financial and other support for longer than in the past, often well into their 20s. Youth leaving the child welfare system, however, do not have similar supports to rely on when they reach the age of majority (eighteen in Ontario). In bail court, the experiences of those who have familial support differ markedly from those who do not. An Act respecting First Nations, Inuit and Métis children, youth and families came into force in January 2020 with the stated objectives of affirming Indigenous jurisdiction over child and family services, reducing the overrepresentation of Indigenous children in state care, and advancing Canada’s commitments under the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. Central to achieving these objectives are the Act’s National Standards, which are intended to ensure Indigenous communities are meaningfully included in decision-making processes. Little attention has been paid to French-Canadian settler colonialism in French-Canadian minority provinces such as Ontario. Although women and racialized lawyers comprise significant proportions of the Canadian bar, they and other equity-deserving lawyers remain markedly underrepresented among counsel making oral submissions before the Supreme Court of Canada. This article presents findings from a five-year empirical study (2017–2021) examining who appears before the Court through an observational analysis of 273 cases and a survey of 279 counsel. The research reveals that presenting counsel are predominantly white, cis-male, and have extensive experience at the bar: e.g., women account for only 26.9% of appearing counsel, while racialized lawyers comprise 12.8%. This thesis examines Florida's manufactured housing communities through the intersecting frameworks of energy justice, critical heat studies, and housing displacement scholarship, centering how structural, political, and economic forces shape uneven exposure to thermal insecurity and housing precarity. Using a mixed-methods approach combining statistical regression analysis of American Community Survey microdata (2019-2023) and spatial case study of Miami-Dade County's heat governance and The Li'l Abner Mobile Home Community’s displacement, this research investigates how manufactured housing residents experience compounded exclusions across energy systems, urban heat governance, and housing security. Context: Meditation and mindfulness practices offer promising non-pharmacological alternatives for individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI) to improve their health and well-being, but integrating such practices into daily routines can be challenging.

Objectives: This survey study aims to identify motivators and barriers to engagement with meditation and mindfulness interventions among individuals with SCI.

Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among adults with SCI (N = 94) from a single large acute rehabilitation center in the United States.

The term "safe space" appears frequently across academic, organizational, therapeutic, and social contexts, yet lacks conceptual clarity. While originating from LGBTQ+ and women's activist movements, contemporary usage has expanded without theoretical development, making it confusing and challenging to effectively implement for researchers and practitioners alike. This two-phase qualitative study examined how individuals define safe spaces. Phase 1 employed an open-ended questionnaire with 62 general population participants. Phase 2 involved semi-structured interviews with 22 self-identified LGBTQ+ individuals. Data were analyzed using a constructivist grounded theory methodology.
