Spatial Diffusion Model For Simulation Of Urban Land Cover Change, Yuming Wen Jan 2004

Spatial Diffusion Model For Simulation Of Urban Land Cover Change, Yuming Wen

Open Access Dissertations

Spatial diffusion is a stochastic spatio-temporal process. Spatial diffusion phenomena occur because of the existence of a concentration gradient of information or material flow. At a regional level, most human-induced land-use and land-cover change, including urban land-cover change, can be considered as a spatial diffusion process. In this research, a spatial diffusion (SDIF) model has been developed to simulate urban land cover change at a regional level. This research aims to establish a theoretical framework for spatial diffusion modeling and build a spatial diffusion modeling system for simulation of urban land-cover change. The Chicago metropolitan region was selected as the …

Ecological Determinants Of Lyme Disease In An Endemic Community, Neeta N. Pardanani Jan 2004

Ecological Determinants Of Lyme Disease In An Endemic Community, Neeta N. Pardanani

Open Access Dissertations

We investigated potential risk factors for Lyme disease at the level of a southern Rhode Island community where vector ticks ( Ixodes scapularis Say) and human Lyme disease are endemic. We recruited homeowners with and without household histories of Lyme disease that would permit sampling of ticks and small mammals around the wooded edge of their properties. Entomologic factors including nymphal tick abundance, rates of tick infection with Lyme disease-causing bacteria (Borrelia burgdorferi ), and the density of infected nymphs were measured. We evaluated the relationship between these variables and the history of Lyme disease cases within households. The relationship …

Morphology Predicts Suction Feeding Performance In Centrarchid Fishes, Andrew M. Carroll, Peter C. Wainwright, Stephen H. Huskey, David C. Collar, Ralph G. Turingan Jan 2004

Morphology Predicts Suction Feeding Performance In Centrarchid Fishes, Andrew M. Carroll, Peter C. Wainwright, Stephen H. Huskey, David C. Collar, Ralph G. Turingan

Ocean Engineering and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Suction feeding fish differ in their capacity to generate subambient pressure while feeding, and these differences appear to relate to morphological variation. We developed a morphological model of force transmission in the fish head and parameterized it with measurements from individual fish. The model was applied to 45 individuals from five species of centrarchid fishes: Lepomis macrochirus, Lepomis punctatus, Lepomis microlophus, Micropterus salmoides and Pomoxis nigromaculatus. Measurements of epaxial cross-sectional area, epaxial moment arm, buccal area and buccal area moment arm were combined to estimate pressure generation capacity for individual fish. This estimation was correlated with pressure measured in fish …

Recent Occurrence Of The Smalltooth Sawfish, Pristis Pectinata (Elasmobranchiomorphi: Pristidae), In Florida Bay And The Florida Keys, With Comments On Sawfish Ecology, Gregg R. Poulakis, Jason C. Seitz

Ocean Engineering and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Encounters with the smalltooth sawfish, Pristis pectinata, in Florida Bay and the Florida Keys were documented by soliciting information from anyone who might have encountered them in these areas. Each person who had information was asked the same series of questions to determine the date and location of the encounter, estimated total length (ETL), and habitat characteristics. A total of 1,632 sawfish encounters occurring between 1990 and 2002 were reported to us (89% occurred between 1998 and 2002). Sawfish were encountered during the day and night. Most sawfish were probably immature when encountered. The smallest sawfish (<1 m ETE) were found in <2.4 m of water and virtually all larger immature sawfish (1.1-2.9 m ETE) were found in <10 m of water. The largest sawfish (>3 m ETE) …

A Role For Tbx5 In Proepicardial Cell Migration During Cardiogenesis, Cathy J. Hatcher, Nata Diman, Minsu Kim, David Pennisi, Yan Song, Marsha M. Goldstien, Takashi Mikawa, Craig T. Basson

PCOM Scholarly Works

Transcriptional regulatory cascades during epicardial and coronary vascular development from proepicardial progenitor cells remain to be defined. We have used immunohistochemistry of human embryonic tissues to demonstrate that the TBX5 transcription factor is expressed not only in the myocardium, but also throughout the embryonic epicardium and coronary vasculature. TBX5 is not expressed in other human fetal vascular beds. Furthermore, immunohistochemical analyses of human embryonic tissues reveals that unlike their epicardial counterparts, delaminating epicardial-derived cells do not express TBX5 as they migrate through the subepicardium before undergoing epithelial-mesenchymal transformation required for coronary vasculogenesis. In the chick, Tbx5 is expressed in the …

Economic Analysis Of Cellulase Production By Clostridium Thermocellum In Solid State And Submerged Fermentation, Jun Zhuang Jan 2004

Economic Analysis Of Cellulase Production By Clostridium Thermocellum In Solid State And Submerged Fermentation, Jun Zhuang

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Dependence on foreign oil remains a serious issue for the U.S. economy. Additionally, automobile emissions related to petroleum-based, fossil fuel has been cited as one source of environmental problems, such as global warming and reduced air quality. Using agricultural and forest biomass as a source for the biofuel ethanol industry, provides a partial solution by displacing some fossil fuels. However, the use of high cost enzymes as an input is a significant limitation for ethanol production.Economic analyses of cellulase enzyme production costs using solid state cultivation (SSC) are performed and compared to the traditional submerged fermentation (SmF) method. Results from …

First Steps Toward Change In Teacher Preparation For Elementary Science, C. Klevickis, R. Kolvoord, M. Handley, K. Giovanetti, D. Peterson, T. Daughtrey, S. Fairchild

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

Unless introductory undergraduate science classes for prospective elementary teachers actively incorporate the philosophy of inquiry-based learning called for in K-l2 science education refom little will change in elementary science education. Thus, at James Madison University, we have developed a new integrated science core curriculum called Understanding our World [1]. This course sequence was not only designed to fulfill general education science requirements. but also to focus on content areas our students will need to know as teachers. The objectives of these courses are based on the National Science Education Standards and Virginia’s Science Standards of Learning, including earth and space …

Paths Diverging? The Next Decade In The U.S.-Japan Security Alliance, William E. Rapp Ltc

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

The author explores the changing nature of Japanese security policy and the impact of those changes on the U.S.-Japan security alliance. He begins his analysis by acquainting the reader with an insider's view of the conflicted Japanese conceptions of security policy and the various ideational and structural restraints on expanding the role of the military. Next, he explores the events of the past decade that have caused huge shifts in security policy and posture and predicts the future vectors of those changes within Japan. Finally, the author overlays the likely Japanese security future on the alliance and concludes that changes …

Salesperson Listening: A Replication And Extension Of The Ilps Scale, Stephen B. Castleberry, Rick Ridnour, C. David Shepherd

Faculty Articles

The primary purpose of this study was further testing of the ILPS scale (Castleberry, et al. 1999). The sample consisted of 101 salespeople from three business-to-business farms in the Midwest. In addition to the ILPS exhibiting good reliability, results are consistent with prior research indicating a significant positive relationship between listening ability and salesperson performance. Results also found a significant positive relationship between listening ability and adaptability and age. Contrary to past salesperson listening research, females were found to be better listeners than men, and there was no significant relationship between listening and salesperson experience. Implications for managers and researchers …

Checking Iran's Nuclear Ambitions, Patrick Clawson Mr., Henry D. Sokolski Mr. Jan 2004

Checking Iran's Nuclear Ambitions, Patrick Clawson Mr., Henry D. Sokolski Mr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

Were Iran to acquire nuclear weapons, there is a grave risk it would be tempted to provide them to terrorists. After all, mass casualty terrorism done by proxies has worked well for Iran to date. The fear about what Iran might do with nuclear weapons is fed by the concern that Tehran has no clear reason to be pursuing nuclear weapons. The strategic rationale for Iran's nuclear program is by no means obvious. Unlike proliferators such as Israel or Pakistan, Iran faces no historic enemy who would welcome an opportunity to wipe the state off the face of the earth. …

Physical Mechanism Of Calcium Ion-Atpase Regulation By Phospholamban., Jason Robert Waggoner Jan 2004

Physical Mechanism Of Calcium Ion-Atpase Regulation By Phospholamban., Jason Robert Waggoner

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The goal of this research project was to elucidate the physical mechanism of Ca2+-ATPase regulation by phospholamban in cardiac muscle. The Ca2+-ATPase transports calcium into the sarcoplasmic reticulum in order to promote muscle relaxation. Phospholamban regulates the Ca 2+-ATPase in the heart by decreasing the apparent calcium affinity of the Ca2+-ATPase, resulting in an inhibition of Ca 2+-ATPase activity. At present, the physical mechanism by which phospholamban regulates the Ca2+-ATPase is unknown. Our central hypothesis was that phospholamban disrupts the Ca2+-ATPase conformational transition from the low Ca2+ affinity state (the E2 intermediate) to the high Ca2+ affinity state (the E1 …

Methods Development And Application Of Two Dimensional Chromatography And Tandem Mass Spectrometry In Proteomics, Brett Romain Wenner

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Although molybdenum blue solutions have been known for more than twocenturies, an understanding of their chemical nature is only beginning to emerge. This dissertation aimed at elucidating the structural nature of the polydisperse, nanoscopic components in the solution phases and the solid states of partiallyreduced polyoxomolybdate (Mo-POM). The study offered at least fourcontributions to the area: (1) a rational protocol for the molecular recognition ofMo-POM with de novo organic hosts. (2) demonstration of kinetic precipitation ofa dynamic mixture of polyoxomolybdates and application of the technique to thestudy of the dynamic mixture by TEM (3) characterization of the Mo-POMnanostructures by an unusual combination …

Atrazine Induction Of A Family 4 Cytochrome P450 Gene In Chironomus Tentans (Diptera: Chironomidae), Diana K. Londono, Blair D. Siegfried, Michael J. Lydy Jan 2004

Atrazine Induction Of A Family 4 Cytochrome P450 Gene In Chironomus Tentans (Diptera: Chironomidae), Diana K. Londono, Blair D. Siegfried, Michael J. Lydy

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Cytochrome P450-dependent microsomal monooxygenase (P450) activity was measured in control and atrazine-exposed third instar midge larvae, Chironomus tentans. Significantly elevated O-demethylase activity was observed in gut homogenates taken from midges exposed to atrazine concentrations from 1 to 10 ppm for 90 h. No significant induction was observed at atrazine concentrations below 1 ppm. A region of a cytochrome P450 family 4 gene was amplified and sequenced from C. tentans larvae. Alignments of inferred amino acid sequences with other insect CYP4 gene homologues indicate a high degree of similarity. Northern blot analysis employing the CYP4 gene fragment as a …

Within-Field Distribution Of The Sunflower Midge (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae), E. W. Hodgson, I. V. Macrae, Gary J. Brewer

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

The sunßower midge, Contarinia schulzi Gagne (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae), is a pest of cultivated sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.). Larval feeding can cause damage and yield loss to the sunflower head. Adult emergence is extended and larvae are well protected in the sunflower receptacle, making chemical control methods difficult and expensive. Sunflower midge enter sunflower fields at the edges but fieldwide distributions occur, although the dynamics are not fully understood. Two commercial fields in 1999 and one field in 2000 were systematically sampled by dividing each field into fixed sample points. Mean egg and larval densities from each sample point were …
