Life history research creates a broader understanding of teaching by providing illustration of the relationships among various aspects of teachers’ lives and their teaching practice, both inside and beyond the classroom. This article focuses on the life history of Munazza, a young science teacher at the Karachi Model Secondary School (KMSS), a private, co‐educational, English‐medium school for children from middle‐income families. Narragansett Bay is an important resource to the state of Rhode Island for recreational and commercial use. Eutrophication of coastal waters and its associated oxygen demand are of increasing concern for Narragansett Bay. This project focused on continuous in situ measurements and three-dimensional model simulations to better understand the physical, biological and chemical processes which occur in the Bay. Measurements of temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, pH, chlorophyll and depth were obtained to gain insight into the process that contribute to phytoplankton production and hypoxia in the Bay. Corals and macroalgae often co-occur on temperate reefs, where macroalgae provide a majority of the bio-complexity and small scleractinian corals occur in low abundance. Macroalgae typically outcompete adjacent organisms for resources such as space, light, and nutrients, and one mechanism for this competitive success is abrasion. This study explores factors that may influence the interactions between corals and macroalgae, in particular macroalgal abrasion, on a temperate reef in Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island. This dissertation addresses the variability in settlement behavior, growth and development during metamorphosis of summer flounder. There were three objectives: (1) Expand basic knowledge of hormonal and environmental factors that regulate timing of metamorphosis, (2) develop hormonal and environmental techniques that promote synchronization of metamorphic growth and settling behavior in order to eventually reduce cannibalism in juveniles, and (3) identify stressful culture practices and evaluate their long-term effects on growth in juvenile flounder. From these relationships, it is possible to build predictive models of estuarine condition. In this study, I examined issues of data quality, scale, and statistical approach to developing predictive models of estuarine sediment metal concentrations in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States. Glycerophosphoinositol is produced through deacylation of the essential phospholipid phosphatidylinositol. In Saccharomyces cerevisiae, when inositol is limiting in the extracellular environment, the glycerophosphoinositol can be transported into the cell through the permease encoded by GIT1 . In this study, Northern blotting and GIT1 promoter activity were analyzed to assess the nutritional factors responsible for the regulation of GIT1 transcription. Here, I report that GIT1 transcript levels are greater in cells starved for phosphate, with or without inositol limitation, than in cells only limited for inositol. The central proposal of this dissertation is that now, in the wake of the Second Vatican Council (1962-5), official Roman Catholic teaching on sin and sacramental reconciliation is not, but ought to be, based upon a contemporary paradigm of sin and reconciliation--i.e. a paradigm which is concordant with, and adequate in light of, the teachings and goals of this Council. According to the author, an existing "liturgical-narrational" model of sin and reconciliation ought to be elevated to the status of such a paradigm or supermodel.

To date, eighteen phylogenetically diverse prokaryotes have been found to utilize arsenic as the terminal electron acceptor in anaerobic respiration, converting arsenate into the more toxic and mobile arsenite. This process can lead to ground water contamination, making it imperative to detect in situ, active arsenate-respiring prokaryotes.

A biochemical probe that targets the catalytic subunit (ArrA) of the respiratory arsenate reductase (Arr) from Bacillus selenitireducens strain MLS10 was developed. There are different factors that influence treatment outcome after ovarian stimulation and timed-intercourse or intrauterine insemination (IUI). After patient age, it has been suggested that timing of insemination in relation to ovulation is probably the most important variable affecting the success of treatment. Minocycline, a semi-synthetic tetracycline antibiotic, is an effective neuroprotective agent in animal models of cerebral ischemia when given in high doses intraperitoneally. The aim of this study was to determine if minocycline was effective at reducing infarct size in a Temporary Middle Cerebral Artery Occlusion model (TMCAO) when given at lower intravenous (IV) doses that correspond to human clinical exposure regimens.

The presence of more ATP-dependent potassium channels in females has been thought to play an important role in protection against myocardial ischemia. In this study, we investigated whether there is a difference in the severity of ischemia and reperfusion induced arrhythmias due to sex and, if there is, what the role of ATP-dependent potassium channel in this difference is. The left anterior descending coronary artery in rats was ligated and arrhythmias were recorded in ECG during 6 min. of ischemia and reperfusion. This paper deals with necessary optimality conditions for optimal control systems governed by constrained functional-differential inclusions of neutral type. While some results are available for smooth control systems governed by neutral functional-differential equations, we are not familiar with any results for neutral functional-differential inclusions, even with smooth cost functionals in the absence of endpoint constraints. Developing the method of discrete approximations and employing advanced tools of generalized differentiation, we conduct a variational analysis of neutral functional-differential inclusions and obtain new necessary optimality conditions of both Euler-Lagrange and Hamiltonian types.

The purpose of this investigation was to describe the lived experience of being confronted with the prospect of taking medications for a psychological complaint, namely a depressive disorder. Descriptions of such experiences were obtained from adult participants and were analyzed qualitatively in order to explicate the themes and meanings that were most significant to forming the experience as such.

The findings of this study were dialogued with literature on medication taking, the doctor-patient relationship, dialogic psychology and the construction of the self, and theories of willing, motivation and identity. This analysis contributes to the current literature by illuminating the lived …

This study provides empirical support for the comprehensive theoretical model of aggression proposed by Meloy (2001) by examining characteristics of children who have a longstanding history of aggression across home and educational settings. The theoretical model first proposed by Meloy (2001) found attachment, anxiety, and attention difficulties in adults who evidenced severe aggression problems. The current study clarified how the adult model applies to children. That is, this study examined how attachment, anxiety, and attention are related to the overall functioning of children requiring treatment for aggression. A new class of dithiolene ligand containing a pyran ring that mimics a biologically important MPT (molybdopterin) have been proposed and the key reactions have been established to synthesize this ligand. Along with that, new dithiolene complexes of nickel [Ni(dt)2]n, where dt=dithiolene ligand, n=charge, have been synthesized and characterized by several spectroscopic techniques. A characteristic low energy charge transfer band in UV-visible spectra is found to be the good indicator of purity as well as the anionic states of the nickel complexes.
