Provenance Of Sand In Periglacial Sand Wedges And Sheet Sand, Northeastern Nebraska, Usa, William J. Wayne Jan 2004

Provenance Of Sand In Periglacial Sand Wedges And Sheet Sand, Northeastern Nebraska, Usa, William J. Wayne

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Sand-wedge polygons on upland surfaces beneath thin loess in northeastern Nebraska record the existence of permafrost around the margin of the Wisconsinan glacier at its maximum advance. Strong unidirectional wind not only kept the upland surfaces free of snow, allowing frost to penetrate deeply and thermal contraction cracks to develop, but also dessicated the surface material so that frost action and sublimation of pore ice could loosen surface material. The strong NW-SE winds deflated soils from upland surfaces, made ventifacts of the cobbles in the lag that remained and created fields of yardangs oriented NW-SE. Sand derived from the soils …

High And Low Affinity Carbohydrate Ligands Revealed For Murine Sign-R1 By Carbohydrate Array And Cell Binding Approaches, And Differing Specificities For Sign-R3 And Langerin, Christine Galustian, Chaegyu Park, Wengang Chai

Publications

The number of receptors of the 'C-type' lectin family is greater than previously thought with a considerable proportion on cells (dendritic cells and macrophages) critical for innate immunity. Establishing that they bind carbohydrates, unravelling and comparing details of their ligands is crucial for understanding the molecular basis of the cell-cell and cell-pathogen interactions that they mediate. Here we use carbohydrate arrays as a new approach to discovering the ligands of three recently described C-type lectin-type receptors on antigen-presenting cells: murine SIGN-R1, SIGN-R3 and langerin. The arrays encompass an extensive panel including polysaccharides, glycoproteins, oligosaccharides and monosaccharides. These are probed with …

Roles For The E3 Ligase Itch In Immune Response Modulation, Sukhvinder Kaur Sahota Jan 2004

Roles For The E3 Ligase Itch In Immune Response Modulation, Sukhvinder Kaur Sahota

Student Theses and Dissertations

Cloning of the inversion breakpoints in the agouti mutant strain a has implicated the E3 ligase Itch in the spontaneous inflammation that occurs in these mice. 1 RH Anaylsis of a mice suggests that the inflammatory disease is due to a dysregulated T helper type-2 immune response. In order to verify the importance of Itch inactivation in the spontaneous inflammation of a mice and to determine which cell type is responsible for the pathology, the Itch gene has been targeted for conditional deletion in mice using the Cre-loxP system. The results presented in this thesis provide the first direct evidence …

Differential Screening In Immunodeficient Mice Reveals Bacterial Enzymes With Unexpected Roles In Host-Pathogen Interactions, Katherine B. Hisert Jan 2004

Differential Screening In Immunodeficient Mice Reveals Bacterial Enzymes With Unexpected Roles In Host-Pathogen Interactions, Katherine B. Hisert

Student Theses and Dissertations

Over centuries of co-existence with their hosts, microbes that are exclusively vertebrate pathogens have evolved mechanisms for manipulation of host cells and evasion of the immune system. Some pathogens dodge the immune response by altering the functions of and hiding within the very cells that should be consuming and digesting them: macrophages. The aim of these studies was to explore the dynamic interactions the host with two microbes that opt to live within the macrophage phagosome: Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) and Salmonella typhimurium. In order to identify bacterial genes that provide protection against specific host immune pathways, we have developed the …

Site And Mechanism Of Leptin's Antisteatotic And Insulin Sensitizing Actions In Lipodystrophic Liver, Esra Asilmaz Jan 2004

Site And Mechanism Of Leptin's Antisteatotic And Insulin Sensitizing Actions In Lipodystrophic Liver, Esra Asilmaz

Student Theses and Dissertations

An adipocyte hormone which functions as the afferent signal in a negative feedback loop regulating energy balance, has profound effects on glucose and lipid metabolisms. Lipodystrophic humans and mice have a complete or partial absence of adipose tissue and a secondary reduction of leptin. This is associated with insulin resistance and hepatic steatosis, which are corrected by leptin administration. This thesis aimed to define the site of leptin action and understand the molecular basis of leptin's insulin sensitizing and antisteatotic effects in lipodystrophy. To determine the site of leptin action, we treated lipodystrophic aP2-nSREBP-1c mice with a low dose of …

Molecular Basis Of Vertebrate Embryonic Migration, Paris A. Skourides Jan 2004

Molecular Basis Of Vertebrate Embryonic Migration, Paris A. Skourides

Student Theses and Dissertations

Embryology aims at understanding how a single fertilized cell develops into a complex multicellular organism. Initially the embryo is no more than a ball of cells where the three primordial layers, the ectoderm, mesoderm and the endoderm are one on top of the other. The three germ layers will go on to form all the tissues and organs of the embryo. For example, the ectoderm will give rise to epidermis and the nervous system; the mesoderm to muscles, the skeletal system, the dermis or inner layer of the skin, the circulatory, excretory, and reproductive systems; and, finally, the endoderm will …

Functional Analyses Of Htel2 And Trf2 Deltab: Insights Into The Role Of A New Dna Damage Pathway And Homologous Recombination In Mammalian Telomere Function, Richard Chih-Chien Wang Jan 2004

Functional Analyses Of Htel2 And Trf2 Deltab: Insights Into The Role Of A New Dna Damage Pathway And Homologous Recombination In Mammalian Telomere Function, Richard Chih-Chien Wang

Student Theses and Dissertations

Tel2 influences telomere length in S. cerevisiae and DNA-damage signaling in C. elegans. We found that endogenous human Tel2 (hTel2) localized in a diffuse, granular patter to the nuclei of human cells where it was enriched in PML nuclear bodies, but telomeres. Surprisingly, hTel2 also localized to centrosomes. Although hTel2 did not detectably interact with telomeric proteins or telomeric chromatin, the overexpression untagged hTel2 resulted in the slow elongation of telomeres in HTC75 and SK-HEP-1 cells. Furthermore, hTel2 overexpression suppressed the accumulation of cells in G2 after ionizing radiation. The depletion of hTel2 in HeLa cells by RNA interference resulted …

Resonant Detection Of Nano To Microscopic Objects Using Whispering Gallery Modes, Frank Vollmer Jan 2004

Resonant Detection Of Nano To Microscopic Objects Using Whispering Gallery Modes, Frank Vollmer

Student Theses and Dissertations

A micron sized glass sphere is able to confine light to its interior volume. The trapped light describes an orbital trajectory circumnavigating just below the microsphere surface. Whenever the light ray tries to escape it is sent back on its circular path by total internal reflection. The light orbit closes in on itself several thousand times and thus creates an optical resonance. The unprecedented narrow linewidth of such a microsphere resonance (Q factors of up to 3x10⁹) allows precise measurement of its frequency. Dielectric microspheres of very high Q are thus the ideal choice for a resonant molecular sensor. Although …

Above And Below The Water: Social/Ecological Transformation In Northwest Newfoundland, Lawrence C. Hamilton, Richard L. Haedrich, Cynthia M. Duncan Jan 2004

Above And Below The Water: Social/Ecological Transformation In Northwest Newfoundland, Lawrence C. Hamilton, Richard L. Haedrich, Cynthia M. Duncan

Sociology

Marine fisheries and fishing societies develop around the resources provided by a particular ecosystem. As they exploit these resources, fisheries transform the ecosystem, which pushes fishery and society to adapt in turn. This process is illustrated by fisheries, ecological and social data tracking dramatic changes on Newfoundland's Northern Peninsula and its adjacent marine ecosystem, the northern Gulf of St. Lawrence. There a longstanding fishery for cod and other groundfish collapsed in the 1990s, and was replaced by fisheries targeting invertebrates. The new invertebrate fisheries have different socioeconomic characteristics than the former groundfish fisheries. The shift in target species reflects deep …

Econometric Analyses Of U.S. Abortion Policy: A Critical View, Jonathan Klick Jan 2004

Econometric Analyses Of U.S. Abortion Policy: A Critical View, Jonathan Klick

Fordham Urban Law Journal

This article surveys, in non-technical language, various econometric studies on the correlation between changes in access to abortion (whether through legalization, increased public funding, increased safety, etc.) and social phenomena such as sexual activity, crime, and opportunities for women. It argues that many econometrics-based abortion studies are contentious, often yielding varying results depending on the stakes of those commissioning the studies, and often too technical to be useful to policy-makers. As a result of these shortcomings, the author calls for methodological soundness and publication for a more general audience for those social scientists who want to enter the reproductive rights …

Austria's Pre-War Brown V. Board Of Education, Maria L. Marcus Jan 2004

Austria's Pre-War Brown V. Board Of Education, Maria L. Marcus

Fordham Urban Law Journal

This article discusses the Austrian Constitutional Court's 1931 decision in which it held that the University of Vienna's regulations dividing students into ethnically based groups was unconstitutional. The article compares the similarities and differences between this case and later critical American equal opportunity cases including Brown v. Board of Education and suggests that an understanding of the current racial challenges is most effective by examining both global and American perspectives. This article explores the balance between maintaining universities autonomy and ensuring that racism does not foster in an institution free from judicial intervention. In discussing two cases, this article points …

Variable Effects Of Mitochondrial Inhibitors And Uncouplers Related To Feeding Times In Colonial Hydroids, Robert Fletcher Jan 2004

Variable Effects Of Mitochondrial Inhibitors And Uncouplers Related To Feeding Times In Colonial Hydroids, Robert Fletcher

Honors Capstones

The mitochondria of a cell are the centers of oxidative phosphorylation in aerobic organisms. Certain compounds have been found to perturb the proton gradient created during energy metabolism causing an increase or decrease in the consumption of oxygen by a colonial hydroid. Azide, an inhibitor has been shown to decrease the consumption of oxygen while dinitrophenol, an uncoupler, has been shown to increase oxygen consumption. In colonial hydroids on non-feeding days, the gastrovascular flow of the colonies is inactive and the mitochondria are less responsive to environmental cues such as the presence of these compounds. Therefore, larger concentrations of the …

Male Sexual Assault: Issues Of Arousal And Consent, Siegmund Fred Fuchs Jan 2004

Male Sexual Assault: Issues Of Arousal And Consent, Siegmund Fred Fuchs

Cleveland State Law Review

This Note argues that an erection under these circumstances does not indicate consent to engage in sexual activity. Part II of this Note explores the reality of male sexual assault and offers various medical, psychological, sociological, and cultural reasons to explain why a male victim may maintain an erection while being sexually assaulted and/or raped. Part II also explores the complex relationship between physical arousal and sexual desire. Part III provides a legal background to both the law's treatment of male sexual assault generally and in specific instances where the male victim maintained an erection during his assault. This part …
