Road Crack Condition Performance Modeling Using Recurrent Markov Chains And Artificial Neural Networks, Jidong Yang

Timely identification of undesirable pavement crack conditions has been a major task in pavement management. Up to date, myriads of pavement performance models have been developed for forecasting pavement crack condition with the traditional preferred techniques being the use of regression relationships developed from laboratory and/or field statistical data. However, it becomes difficult for regression techniques to predict the crack performance accurately and robustly in the presence of a variety of tributary factors, high nonlinearity, and uncertainty. Ecotourism has been promoted globally as a model for sustainable development because it simultaneously benefits the environment and the residents of the given destination. However, many conservationists have questioned the long term sustainability of ecotourism as it is difficult to mitigate the impact of even low levels of tourism on a particular ecosystem. Further, social scientists including anthropologists have similarly questioned whether most residents of a particular destination actually benefit significantly from the alternative tourism economy.

The focus of this study is Lily Bart and how she maneuvers in the cold, competitive world of upper class New York. To create a framework for my investigation, I draw upon naturalistic readings of the story which portray Lily as an outsider or "other" in her society. Lily's ethical principles lead to her destruction. Her marriage problem is just an example of her rejection of the life that her society expects her to lead. As she becomes more aware of a different philosophy of life--characterized by Selden's "republic of the spirit"--she finds it impossible to abide by the rules …

Prescribed self-management behaviors have been found to be important factors affecting the rates of morbidity and mortality in multiple medical conditions including chronic diseases such as diabetes, a condition that disproportionately affects high health risk populations such as African Americans.

This study focused on understanding health behaviors, beliefs, and associated factors such as support systems and access to care that played a role in diabetes self-management and glucose control. The study also explored diabetes self-management education and its role in diabetes self-management. The research conducted in Pinellas and Hillsborough counties in Florida, included twenty-five African American women between the ages …

The Virginia Department of Education solicited proposals from colleges and universities with approved programs in special education to provide coursework and activities for teachers to gain competencies required for special education endorsements. The department was specifically interested in innovative delivery formats that addressed special education personnel needs while being responsive to the demands of working professionals. Liberty University was one of the eligible applicants of this grant as they offered courses through distance learning for teachers across the Commonwealth to complete the requirements for standard special education licensure. Different Perspectives on Majority Rules: 9th Annual Conference (2004)

"My supervisor is nice, but she/he just doesn't understand me!" This statement may help explain some of the mixed success for predominantly white workplaces in retaining people of color. This presentation outlines a dissertation study exploring the relationship between intercultural sensitivity of leaders, and followers' ratings of workplace fairness. Demographic similarity or difference between supervisor and supervisee will also be considered as a moderating variable. Findings may help us to better understand how workplace relationships impact issues related to retention.

A unique index line of pigs created by long-term selection ovulates on average 6.7 more ova than its randomly selected control line. Expression profiling experiments were conducted to identify differentially expressed genes in ovarian tissues of the index and control lines during days 2–6 of the follicular phase of the estrous cycle. Fluorescently labeled cDNAs derived from ovary and follicle RNA were cohybridized on microarray slides (n = 90) containing 4608 follicle-derived probes printed in duplicate. Statistical analysis of the resulting ~1.6 million data points with a mixed-model approach identified 88 and 74 unique probes, representing 71 and 59 …

Summary: We study a binary regression model where the response variable $\Delta$ is the indicator of an event of interest (for example, the incidence of cancer) and the set of covariates can be partitioned as $(X,Z)$ where $Z$ (real valued) is the covariate of primary interest and $X$ (vector valued) denotes a set of control variables. For any fixed $X$, the conditional probability of the event of interest is assumed to be a monotonic function of $Z$.
