Life-History Divergence In Chinook Salmon: Historic Contingency And Parallel Evolution, Robin Waples, David J. Teel, James M. Myers, Anne R. Marhsall
Life-History Divergence In Chinook Salmon: Historic Contingency And Parallel Evolution, Robin Waples, David J. Teel, James M. Myers, Anne R. Marhsall
United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications
By jointly considering patterns of genetic and life-history diversity in over 100 populations of Chinook salmon from California to British Columbia, we demonstrate the importance of two different mechanisms for life history evolution. Mapping adult run timing (the life-history trait most commonly used to characterize salmon populations) onto a tree based on the genetic data shows that the same run-time phenotypes exist in many different genetic lineages. In a hierarchical gene diversity analysis, differences among major geographic and ecological provinces explained the majority (62%) of the overall GST, whereas run-time differences explained only 10%. Collectively, these results indicate …

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Light Therapy, And Their Combination In Treating Seasonal Affective Disorder, Kelly J. Rohan, Kathryn Tierney Lindsey, Katheryn A. Roecklein, Timothy J. Lacy
Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences
Background: The need to develop supplementary or alternative treatments for seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is underscored by the significant minority (47%) of SAD patients that is refractory to light therapy, the persistence of residual symptoms despite light treatment, and poor long-term compliance with light use. Because preliminary studies suggest that cognitive and behavioral factors are involved in SAD, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) warrants investigation as a possible treatment option. Methods: We piloted a 6-week randomized clinical trial to compare a standard light therapy protocol; a novel, SAD-tailored, group CBT intervention; and their combination in ameliorating and remitting a current SAD episode …
Functional Characterization Of The Arabidopsis Thaliana Orthologue Of Tsc13p, The Enoyl Reductase Of The Yeast Microsomal Fatty Acid Elongating System, Kenneth Gable, Sarah Garton, Johnathan A. Napier, Teresa M. Dunn
Dunn
Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences
The protein encoded by the Arabidopsis At3g55360 gene was selected as a candidate for the enoyl reductase of the microsomal elongase system based on its homology to the Tsc13p protein of S. cerevisiae. The studies presented here demonstrate that heterologous expression of At3g55360 functionally complements the temperature-sensitive phenotype of a yeast tsc13 mutant that is deficient in enoyl reductase activity. Furthermore, AtTSC13 is shown to interact physically with the Elo2p and Elo3p components of the yeast elongase complex. At3g55360 apparently encodes the sole enoyl reductase activity associated with microsomal fatty acid elongation in Arabidopsis. Consistent with this conclusion, …

Structure Of Shiga Toxin Type 2 (Stx2) From Escherichia Coli O157:H7, Marie E. Fraser, Masao Fujinaga, Maia M. Cherney, Angela R. Melton-Celsa, Edda M. Twiddy, Alison D. O'Brien, Michael N. G. James
Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences
Several serotypes of Escherichia coli produce protein toxins closely related to Shiga toxin (Stx) from Shigella dysenteriae serotype 1. These Stx-producing E. coli cause outbreaks of hemorrhagic colitis and hemolytic uremic syndrome in humans, with the latter being more likely if the E. coli produce Stx2 than if they only produce Stx1. To investigate the differences among the Stxs, which are all AB5 toxins, the crystal structure of Stx2 from E. coli O157:H7 was determined at 1.8-Å resolution and compared with the known structure of Stx. Our major finding was that, in contrast to Stx, the active site of …

Stable Hydrogen Isotope Analysis Of Bat Hair As Evidence For Seasonal Molt And Long-Distance Migration, Paul M. Cryan, Michael A. Bogan, Robert O. Rye, Gary P. Landis, Cynthia L. Kester
Stable Hydrogen Isotope Analysis Of Bat Hair As Evidence For Seasonal Molt And Long-Distance Migration, Paul M. Cryan, Michael A. Bogan, Robert O. Rye, Gary P. Landis, Cynthia L. Kester
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Although hoary bats (Lasiurus cinereus) are presumed to be migratory and capable of long-distance dispersal, traditional marking techniques have failed to provide direct evidence of migratory movements by individuals. We measured the stable hydrogen isotope ratios of bat hair (∂Dh) and determined how these values relate to stable hydrogen isotope ratios of precipitation (∂Dp). Our results indicate that the major assumptions of stable isotope migration studies hold true for hoary bats and that the methodology provides a viable means of determining their migratory movements. We present evidence that a single annual molt occurs in L. cinereus …
Genetic Structure Of Cougar Populations Across The Wyoming Basin: Metapopulation Or Megapopulation, Charles R. Anderson Jr., Federick G. Lindzey, David B. Mcdonald
Genetic Structure Of Cougar Populations Across The Wyoming Basin: Metapopulation Or Megapopulation, Charles R. Anderson Jr., Federick G. Lindzey, David B. Mcdonald
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
We examined the genetic structure of 5 Wyoming cougar (Puma concolor) populations surrounding the Wyoming Basin, as well as a population from southwestern Colorado. When using 9 microsatellite DNA loci, observed heterozygosity was similar among populations (HO = 0.49–0.59) and intermediate to that of other large carnivores. Estimates of genetic structure (FST = 0.028, RST = 0.029) and number of migrants per generation (Nm) suggested high gene flow. Nm was lowest between distant populations and highest among adjacent populations. Examination of these data, plus Mantel test results of genetic versus geographic distance (P ≤ 0.01), suggested both isolation …

New Distributional Record Of The Nothern Redbelly Dace In The Northern Great Plains, Nathan M. Morey, Charles R. Berry Jr.
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
The range of the northern redbelly dace (Phoxinus eos) is grouped into two regions in central North America (Stasiak 1980). In the northern Great Plains, the species is distributed throughout the upper Missouri River drainage in Montana and Canada (Brown 1971, Scott and Crossman 1973). In the Central Lowlands, the northern redbelly dace is distributed through northern Minnesota, Wisconsin, Canada, and the Great Lakes region (Hubbs and Cooper 1936, Eddy and Underhill 1976, Becker 1983). The present distribution of northern redbelly dace has shifted northward from a more southerly distribution during Pleistocene glaciation (Cross et al. 1986). Relict …

Reproduction And Seasonal Activity Of Silver-Haired Bats In Western Nebraska, Keith Geluso, Jeffrey J. Huebschman, Jeremy A. White, Michael A. Bogan
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Silver-haired bats (Lasionycteris noctivagans) were thought only to migrate through Nebraska; however, recent surveys in eastern Nebraska report summer records of females and their young. Our study in western Nebraska also shows that silver-haired bats are summer residents. We discovered the 1st reproductively active L. noctivagans in this part of the state. We caught lactating females and volant young in riparian forests along the North Platte River and in forested areas of the Pine Ridge. Previously, adult males were not known from Nebraska in summer, and only 4 records of L. noctivagans were known from western Nebraska during …
Record Of Late Pleistocene Glaciation And Deglaciation In The Southern Cascade Range. I. Petrological Evidence From Lacustrine Sediment In Upper Klamath Lake, Southern Oregon, Richard L. Reynolds, Joseph G. Rosenbaum, Josh Rapp, Michael W. Kerwin, J. Platt Bradbury, David Adam, Steven Colman
Record Of Late Pleistocene Glaciation And Deglaciation In The Southern Cascade Range. I. Petrological Evidence From Lacustrine Sediment In Upper Klamath Lake, Southern Oregon, Richard L. Reynolds, Joseph G. Rosenbaum, Josh Rapp, Michael W. Kerwin, J. Platt Bradbury, David Adam, Steven Colman
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Petrological and textural properties of lacustrine sediments from Upper Klamath Lake, Oregon, reflect changing input volumes of glacial flour and thus reveal a detailed glacial history for the southern Cascade Range between about 37 and 15 ka. Magnetic properties vary as a result of mixing different amounts of the highly magnetic, glacially generated detritus with less magnetic, more weathered detritus derived from unglaciated parts of the large catchment. Evidence that the magnetic properties record glacial flour input is based mainly on the strong correlation between bulk sediment particle size and parameters that measure the magnetite content and magnetic mineral freshness. …
Mercury And Methylmercury Concentrations And Loads In The Cache Creek Watershed, California, Joseph L. Domagalski, Charles N. Alpers, Darell G. Slotton, Thomas H. Suchanek, Shaun M. Ayers
Mercury And Methylmercury Concentrations And Loads In The Cache Creek Watershed, California, Joseph L. Domagalski, Charles N. Alpers, Darell G. Slotton, Thomas H. Suchanek, Shaun M. Ayers
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Concentrations and loads of total mercury and methylmercury were measured in streams draining abandoned mercury mines and in the proximity of geothermal discharge in the Cache Creek watershed of California during a 17-month period from January 2000 through May 2001. Rainfall and runoff were lower than long-term averages during the study period. The greatest loading of mercury and methylmercury from upstream sources to downstream receiving waters, such as San Francisco Bay, generally occurred during or after winter rainfall events. During the study period, loads of mercury and methylmercury from geothermal sources tended to be greater than those from abandoned mining …

The H4iie Cell Bioassay As An Indicator Of Dioxin-Like Chemicals In Wildlife And The Environment, J. J. Whyte, Christopher J. Schmitt, D. E. Tillitt
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
The H4IIE cell bioassay has proven utility as a screening tool for planar halogenated hydrocarbons (PHHs) and structurally similar chemicals accumulated in organisms from the wild. This bioassay has additional applications in hazard assessment of PHH exposed populations. In this review, the toxicological principles, current protocols, performance criteria, and field applications for the assay are described. The H4IIE cell bioassay has several advantages over the analytical measurement of PHHs in environmental samples, but conclusions from studies can be strengthened when both bioassay and analytical chemistry data are presented together. Often, the bioassay results concur with biological effects in organisms and …
An Association Of Benthic Foraminifera And Gypsum In Holocene Sediments Of Estuarine Chesapeake Bay, Usa, John Cann, Thomas Cronin
An Association Of Benthic Foraminifera And Gypsum In Holocene Sediments Of Estuarine Chesapeake Bay, Usa, John Cann, Thomas Cronin
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Two cores of Holocene sediments recovered from the Cape Charles Channel of Chesapeake Bay yielded radiocarbon ages of about 6.8 to 5.8 ka for the lower intervals. Fossil foraminifera preserved in these lower sediments are dominated by species of Elphidium, which make up about 90% of the assemblage throughout, and probably signify deposition in hypersaline waters. Buccella frigida and Ammonia beccarii are the only other species commonly present. Hypersalinity of bottom waters seems to have been maintained by water-density stratification in a basin-like section of the channel. In core PTXT -4-P-I transition to modem Chesapeake conditions, in which numbers …

Chronology Of Sediment Deposition In Upper Klamath Lake, Oregon, Steven M. Colman, J. Platt Bradbury, John P. Mcgeehin, Charles W. Holmes, David Edginton, Andrei M. Sarna-Wojcicki
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
A combination of tephrochronology and 14C, 210Pb, and 137Cs measurements provides a robust chronology for sedimentation in Upper Klamath Lake during the last 45 000 years. Mixing of surficial sediments and possible mobility of the radio-isotopes limit the usefulness of the 137Cs and 210Pb data, but 210Pb profiles provide reasonable average sediment accumulation rates for the last 100–150 years. Radiocarbon ages near the top of the core are somewhat erratic and are too old, probably as a result of detrital organic carbon, which may have become a more common component in recent times as …
Grassland Vegetation And Bird Communities In The Southern Great Plains Of North America, Robert N. Chapman, David M. Engle, Ronald E. Masters, David M. Leslie Jr.
Grassland Vegetation And Bird Communities In The Southern Great Plains Of North America, Robert N. Chapman, David M. Engle, Ronald E. Masters, David M. Leslie Jr.
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Structure and composition of vegetation and abundance of breeding birds in grasslands seeded to Old World bluestem (Bothriochloa ischmaeum) were compared to native mixed prairie in the southern Great Plains of North America. Abundance of birds was determined using fixed-radius point counts. Detrended correspondence analysis was used to compare plant community composition and canonical correspondence analysis was used to examine the relationships between plant species composition and vegetation structure with the bird community. Plant species composition differed distinctly between seeded grassland and native mixed prairie, but the differences were not reflected in habitat structure, bird community composition, or …

Do Maternal/Paternal Child Relationships Have A Similar Pattern When The Child Has Tourette's Syndrome? A Case Study, Judy Olson Ph.D.
Electronic Journal for Inclusive Education
Although I did not realize it at the time, my first experiences in parenting evolved around a child who was diagnosed with onset pervasive developmental disorder by age five. Due to his hyperactivity, he was prescribed Ritalin. Within two weeks after being given this medication, he developed motor and vocal tics and was diagnosed with Tourette’s syndrome (TS) by the time he reached nine years of age. Subsequently, I began a teaching career in special education. During this time, I had guidance by a psychologist and two physicians who taught me a great deal about Tourette’s syndrome (TS). In the …

Overview Of Metal-On-Polyethylene, Metal-On-Metal, And Ceramic Hip Wear Mechanisms, A. Buford, Tarun Goswami
Biomedical, Industrial & Human Factors Engineering Faculty Publications
Premature failure of orthopaedic hip implants caused by multiple wear mechanisms is the primary failure mode of prosthetic hips. Wearing of the implants may lead to aseptic loosening, biological incompatibilities, and mechanical failure of the implant. In order to prevent or restrict the effects of the wear mechanisms, multiple laboratory studies are being conducted in order to determine each mechanism and its contribution to increased wear rates. This paper combines previous laboratory studies related to the wear of metal-onpolyethylene, metal-on-metal, and ceramic materials. The bulk quantity materials discussed include cobalt chromium alloys, stainless steels, zirconium oxide ceramics, and polyethylene materials …

Freedom From Fear: Prosecuting The Iraqi Regime For The Use Of Chemical Weapons, Margaret Sewell
St. Thomas Law Review
This paper will introduce the Iraqi regime and explore its use of chemical weapons against Iran during the Iran-Iraq War and the Kurdish population in northern Iraq. The effect of the Iraqi regime's use of chemical weapons against these individuals was debilitating, irreversible and, in some instances, is just recently coming to light. This paper will also set forth the relevant evidence that will be used in a prosecution of Hussein and his "most-wanted" associates. A vast array of data has been collected over the past two decades by the United States government, the United Nations and various non-governmental organizations, …

The Terminator Patent And Its Discontents: Rethinking The Normative Deficit In Utility Test Of Modern Patent Law, Ikechi Mgbeoji
St. Thomas Law Review
For clarity of analysis, this article is divided into three parts. In the first part, I introduce the technologies of GURTs (Genetic Use Restriction Technologies) and their main characteristics. In the second part, I examine the origins and policy foundations of the patent system, particularly how the courts in various jurisdictions have defined the concept of utility. The second part also explores the evolution of the requirement of utility and its contemporary emergence as a secular, technical test with emphasis on mechanical operability of inventions. The third part of this article explores the nature of GURT patents vis-a-vis their compatibility …
Selling Agricultural Commodities To Cuba - What Happens Next, Michael C. Mcclintock
Selling Agricultural Commodities To Cuba - What Happens Next, Michael C. Mcclintock
St. Thomas Law Review
For forty-two years, the United States has maintained a comprehensive embargo of Cuba. Its multifaceted prohibitions derive from various enactments and much regulatory minutiae. Not surprisingly, a United States national may not import goods from Cuba or make any kind of foreign investment there. Administrative rules permit only a narrow range of transactions such as travel to Cuba for educational activities provided detailed licensing requirements are satisfied. Few realize, however, that travel to Cuba for tourist purposes is now totally prohibited. In the 2000 Trade Sanctions Reform Act (TSRA), Congress expressly authorized the sale of agricultural commodities including medically-related items …

Fire In Southern Appalachians: Fuels, Stand Structure And Oaks, David L. Loftis, Mary A. Arthur, Rex Mann, Jeffrey Lewis
Joint Fire Science Program Research Project Reports
Managers responsible for maintaining the diversity and productivity of Southern Appalachian forests are increasingly turning to prescribed fire as an important management tool in oak dominated forests. The decision to use fire with increasing frequency and spatial extent is based, in part, on an emerging sense of the prehistoric significance of fire in this landscape and its potential to control the proliferation of fire-sensitive competitors in contemporary forests. While it is well documented that fire has been an important ecological force in Southern Appalachian forests for a very long time, there has been little research to demonstrate that prescribed fire …

A Brief History and Background of the EPA CAFO Rule
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rules affecting animal feeding operations (AFOs) have evolved from the 1972 Federal Clean Water Act (CWA). Section 502 of the CWA specifically defined “feedlots” as “point sources” along with dozens of other industries such as meat processing and fertilizer manufacturing. The goal of the 1972 CWA was to restore “fishable, swimmable” quality of lakes, streams, and estuaries in the United States.
A federal permit program termed the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) was created for point sources that discharged into “waters of the United …
Response Of Nebraska Sand Hills Natural Vegetation To Drought, Fire, Grazing, And Plant Functional Type Shifts As Simulated By The Century Model, Jennifer Mangan, Jonathan T. Overpeck, Robert S. Webb, Carol Wessman, Alexander Goetz
Response Of Nebraska Sand Hills Natural Vegetation To Drought, Fire, Grazing, And Plant Functional Type Shifts As Simulated By The Century Model, Jennifer Mangan, Jonathan T. Overpeck, Robert S. Webb, Carol Wessman, Alexander Goetz
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
The Nebraska Sand Hills exist in a semi-arid climatic environment and the land surface is grassland growing on sandy soils. These soils have been periodically active throughout the Holocene, but are currently stabilized by the vegetation. However, a shift in climate could cause grassland death and eventual sand dune remobilization. Our studies used the CENTURY nutrient cycling and ecosystem model to investigate the impacts of drought, plant functional type, fire, grazing, and erosion on Nebraska Sand Hills vegetation and dune stability. Fire and grazing alone had little impact on the vegetation, but when combined with mild drought, biomass decreased. Overall …

Identification Of Protein Interaction Between The Drosophila Runx1 Transcription Factor Lozenge And Ets-1 Factor Pointed Using Site Directed Mutagenesis And Yeast Two-Hybrid Analysis, Shalini Singh
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Many classes of transcriptional regulatory proteins are known to function in both cell proliferation and differentiation. Runx1 proteins one such family of transcription factors, plays critical roles in hematopoiesis, osteogenesis and leukemogenesis and act as promoter organizers that cooperate with other transcription factors such as Ets-1 in the regulation of gene activation or repression. Genes that are regulated by the Runx1-Ets1 complex, frequently have multiple, adjacent consensus binding sites in their promoters. I have investigated a similar interaction in developing fly eye. Lozenge (DmRunx1) and Pointed P2 (DmEts-1) cooperate to upregulate expression of prospero, which has multiple Lz and Ets …
