Empirical Measurement Of Parasite Transmission Between Groups In A Colonial Bird, Charles R. Brown, Mary Bomberger Brown Jan 2004

Empirical Measurement Of Parasite Transmission Between Groups In A Colonial Bird, Charles R. Brown, Mary Bomberger Brown

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

While epidemiological models have suggested that the spread of parasites
and infectious diseases often depends critically on the extent of movement by infected
individuals between populations, there is little empirical information for any organism on
the frequency of between-group parasite transmission or how it varies spatially. The transmission
of parasites between discrete social groups or populations may also help determine
a host’s total parasite or pathogen exposure. We measured the introduction of parasitic bugs
(Oeciacus vicarius) into colonies of Cliff Swallows (Petrochelidon pyrrhonota) by transient
birds from outside each group. The transmission of bugs increased strongly …

The Impact Of Traditional Shona Beliefs On Hiv/Aids Intervention Work In Zimbabwe, Brian Goercke Jan 2004

The Impact Of Traditional Shona Beliefs On Hiv/Aids Intervention Work In Zimbabwe, Brian Goercke

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the relationship between secondary students in the rural and peri-urban areas of Mashonaland in Zimbabwe and their tendencies to agree or disagree with traditional Shona attitudes, beliefs and practices as they related to the HIV/AIDS pandemic. A convenience, cluster sample was used to identify the 482 students who participated in this study. A questionnaire composed of demographics, hypothetical and open-ended questions was administered to these students within the regular classrooms of their respective schools.

A notable finding in this study was that traditional Shona beliefs appear to be stronger in the rural areas. However, the students surveyed …

The Importance Of Cmos Sensor Surface Topography In The Attachment, Proliferation, And Differentiation Of Human Adult Mesenchymal Stem Cells, Christa Y. Heyward Jan 2004

The Importance Of Cmos Sensor Surface Topography In The Attachment, Proliferation, And Differentiation Of Human Adult Mesenchymal Stem Cells, Christa Y. Heyward

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Osteoblasts and osteoblast precursor cells (mesenchymal stem cells) respond to the surface topography of metal implants by aligning along surface features in order to minimize shear stress. While several previous studies have investigated the morphology, attachment and proliferation of both osteoblasts and mesenchymal stem cells along grooved surfaces, the current study investigates the cellular response to depressions and peaks in surface topography, as well as surfaces that contain alternating combinations of depressions and peaks. The Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS) sensor is a transducer fabricated from silicon and sputter coated with titanium. The CMOS sensor is designed to utilize piezoresistive …

Analysis Of Specific Cis-Acting Dna Sequences Of The Himar1 Mariner Transposon, Beth Berta Jan 2004

Analysis Of Specific Cis-Acting Dna Sequences Of The Himar1 Mariner Transposon, Beth Berta

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Himar1, found in the horn fly Haematobia irritans, belongs to the mariner family of transposable elements. Mariners are a diverse and widespread family of eukaryotic transposons that transpose via a cut-and-paste mechanism. Mariner transposition not only requires the transposase, but also specific cis-acting DNA sequences known as inverted terminal repeats (ITRs). Very little is known about the fine structure of mariner ITRs, particularly which bases are important for transposition. A mariner family ITR sequence logo representing 20 different mariners from six different subfamilies suggests that more conserved regions of the logo are required for transposase binding while the more variable …

Age And Sex-Specific Rates Of Leaf Regeneration In The Mojave Desert Moss Syntrichia Caninervis, Lloyd Stark, L. Nichols, Nicholas N. Mcletchie, S. D. Smith, C. Zundel Jan 2004

Age And Sex-Specific Rates Of Leaf Regeneration In The Mojave Desert Moss Syntrichia Caninervis, Lloyd Stark, L. Nichols, Nicholas N. Mcletchie, S. D. Smith, C. Zundel

Life Sciences Faculty Research

The extremely skewed female-biased sex ratio in the desert moss Syntrichia caninervis was investigated by assessing the regeneration capacity of detached leaves. Juvenile, green, yellow-green, and brown leaves equating to approximately 0, 2, 6, and 12 yr of age, respectively, were detached from individuals of S. caninervis collected from 10 field populations and grown in a growth chamber for 58 d at a light intensity of 33–128 µmol · m–2 · s–1. Younger leaves (0–2 yr old) tended to have a greater viability, regenerate more quickly, extend their protonemal filaments farther, produce shoots (gametophores) more quickly, produce more shoots, and …

Microbial Endemism And Biogeography, Brian P. Hedlund, James T. Staley Jan 2004

Microbial Endemism And Biogeography, Brian P. Hedlund, James T. Staley

Life Sciences Faculty Research

The topic of microbial biogeography is almost 100 years old, however, when confronted with questions about the existence and extent of endemism in the microbial world, many microbiologists respond with opinions and theoretical arguments rather than examples of well-conducted studies. We begin this chapter with an overview of this debate as it applies to free-living prokayotes in part because there are relatively few good microbial biogeography studies. Furthermore, the arguments help to frame microbial biogeography in the larger context of biodiversity in that if endemism is common, then many more species exist.

Distributions Of Z-Dna And Nuclear Factor I In Human Chromosome 22: A Model For Coupled Transcriptional Regulation, P. Christoph Champ, Sandor Maurice, Jeff Vargason, Tracy Camp, P. Shing Ho Jan 2004

Distributions Of Z-Dna And Nuclear Factor I In Human Chromosome 22: A Model For Coupled Transcriptional Regulation, P. Christoph Champ, Sandor Maurice, Jeff Vargason, Tracy Camp, P. Shing Ho

Faculty Publications - Department of Biological & Molecular Science

An analysis of the human chromosome 22 genomic sequence shows that both Z-DNA forming regions (ZDRs) and promoter sites for nuclear factor-I (NFI) are correlated with the locations of known and predicted genes across the chromosome and accumulate around the transcriptional start sites of the known genes. Thus, the occurrence of Z-DNA across human genomic sequences mirrors that of a known eukaryotic transcription factor. In addition, 43 of the 383 fully annotated chromosomal genes have ZDRs within 2 nucleosomes upstream of strong NFIs. This suggests a distinct class of human genes that may potentially be transcriptionally regulated by a mechanism …

Critical Digital Infrastructure Protection: An Investigatoin Into The Intergovernmental Activities Of Information Technology Directors In Florida Counties, Joah Nicole Devenny

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As cyber attacks become more sophisticated, the risk to all networked computer systems increases. Whether public or private, whether federal, state, or local, the threat is equally real. Consequently, local governments must respond accordingly to understand the threats, take measures to protect themselves, and determine how to respond in the event of a system breach. Additionally, since cyber criminals do not respect geographic or administrative boundaries, local leaders must be prepared to instantly interact with other governments, agencies, and departments to suppress an attack. Guided by the theory of intergovernmental management (IGM), this exploratory research investigated how Information Technology (IT) …

Assessing Job Satisfaction And Emotional Intelligence In Public School Teachers, Brandy Cobb

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

ASSESSING JOB SATISFACTION AND EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE IN PUBLIC SCHOOL TEACHERS Brandy Cobb May 2004 63 Pages Directed by: Dr. William Pfohl, Dr. Steven Wininger, and Dr. Reagan Brown Department of Psychology Western Kentucky University The professional field of education has been particularly vulnerable to the retention of public school teachers. Teachers in today’s educational system face excessive expectations and demands such as increased accountability, lack of available resources, lack of parental support and involvement, negative student attitudes, low status of the profession, and low paying salaries (Meek, 1998; Tye & O’Brien, 2002). As a result of these demands, many teachers …

Development Of A Gene Transfer System In Clostridium Scindens Vpi 12708, Rashmi Ramasubbaiah Jan 2004

Development Of A Gene Transfer System In Clostridium Scindens Vpi 12708, Rashmi Ramasubbaiah

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Clostridium scindens VPI 12708 (previously known as Eubacterium sp. VPI 12708) is a bile-acid dehydroxylating bacterium originally isolated from the feces of a colon cancer patient. Many genes required for bile acid 7-a dehydroxylation are found on a large bile acid inducible operon (bai) that has been extensively studied. However the bai promoter, which directs expression of the bai operon, has yet to be characterized due, in part, to a lack of a functional genetic transfer system for this strain. A spontaneous rifampinresistant Clostridium scindens VPI 12708 mutant was used as a recipient to determine the efficacy of conjugation as …

The Ecology Of Interorganizational Information Sharing, Jane Fedorowicz, Janis L. Gogan, Amy W. Ray Jan 2004

The Ecology Of Interorganizational Information Sharing, Jane Fedorowicz, Janis L. Gogan, Amy W. Ray

Journal of International Information Management

Increasingly, companies use interorganizational information systems to support business process partnerships, such as automatic replenishment systems and other supply chain initiatives, invoicing and payments, and insurance claims processing. Inter-firm networking in turn can increase the visibility of information generated and used by business partners. These business partners may experience intended and unintended impacts from the changes in the partnering relationship, in effect altering the ecology of the organization. Yet IT researchers rarely study an organization's ecology, focusing instead on impacts upon internal processes. Our goal in this paper is to propose a definition of interorganizational information ecology, to provide IT …
