USF Patents

The present invention is an isolated compound and method of inducing endothelium-dependent relaxation in blood vessels including the step of introducing isolated procyanidins having a preponderance of (−)-epicatechins to a patient wherein the procyanidins are preferably galloylated. To achieve both bioavailability and potency, it is also preferred that the number of epicatechins monomers forming each procyanidin is between two and five. More specifically, isolated epicatechin-(4-8)-epicatechin-(4-8)-epicatechin-gallate (C1-gallate) is administered to the patient.

Method Of Identifying And Treating Invasive Carcinomas (Div.B), Xinqing Chai, Julie Chao, Lee Chao, Limei Chen

UCF Patents

Prostasin protein has been found to be a useful marker for determination of the invasiveness of and as a means to treat human carcinomas. Using RT-PCR and western blot analyses, prostasin protein and mRNA expression were found in normal human prostate epithelial cells and the human prostate cancer cell line LNCaP, but not in the highly invasive human prostate cancer cell lines DU-145 and PC-3. Imunohistochemistry studies of human prostate cancer specimens revealed a down-regulation of prostasin in high-grade tumors. Using RT-PCR and western blot analyses, prostasin protein and mRNA expression were found in a non-invasive human breast cancer cell …

A method detects binding of molecules, advantageously without tagging molecules in the sample. A sensor is used in which is included a single stranded nucleic acid sequence and a photoluminescent material in respective layers. After the sensor is exposed to a biological sample for sufficient time for its single stranded nucleic acid sequence to bind to a material of interest, photoluminescence from the sensor can be measured. An apparatus for tagging-free detection of binding of molecules also is provided. Methods of making tagging-free sensors are provided. Also, tagging-free methods to detect binding of antigens and related devices are disclosed.

The Development And Validation Of The Thinness Expectancy Questionnaire (Teq), Ari R. Steinberg Mar 2004

The Development And Validation Of The Thinness Expectancy Questionnaire (Teq), Ari R. Steinberg

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Although the research on expectancy theory and body image and eating disturbance is very limited, it appears to be an extremely useful and promising line of study. It appears likely that the application of expectancy theory would lend itself well to the area of body image disturbance and eating disorders. Within the field of body image disturbance and eating disorders research, expectancies would most likely refer to the anticipated consequences of being thin. Such expectancies may be established by an individual's direct experience with weight loss and dieting or through the observation of the messages concerning the societal "thin ideal" …

A Learning Approach To Obtain Efficient Testing Strategies In Medical Diagnosis, Saif Fakih Mar 2004

A Learning Approach To Obtain Efficient Testing Strategies In Medical Diagnosis, Saif Fakih

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Determining the most efficient use of diagnostic tests is one of the complex issues facing the medical practitioners. It is generally accepted that excessive use of tests is common practice in medical diagnosis. Many tests are performed even though the incremental knowledge gained does not affect the course of diagnosis. With the soaring cost of healthcare in the US, there is a critical need for cutting costs of diagnostic tests, while achieving a higher level of diagnostic accuracy. Various decision making tools assisting physicians in diagnosis management have been presented to the literature. One such method, called analytical hierarchy process, …

Lysophosphatidic Acid Induces Neointima Formation Through Pparγ Activation, Chunxiang Zhang, Daniel L. Baker, Satoshi Yasuda, Natalia Makarova, Louisa Balazs, Leonard R. Johnson, Gopal K. Marathe, Thomas M. Mcintyre, Yong Xu, Glenn D. Prestwich, Hoe-Sup Byun, Robert Bittman, Gabor Tigyi

Publications and Research

Neointimal lesions are characterized by accumulation of cells within the arterial wall and are a prelude to atherosclerotic disease. Here we report that a brief exposure to either alkyl ether analogs of the growth factor–like phospholipid lysophosphatidic acid (LPA), products generated during the oxidative modification of low density lipoprotein, or to unsaturated acyl forms of LPA induce progressive formation of neointima in vivo in a rat carotid artery model. This effect is completely inhibited by the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR)γ antagonist GW9662 and mimicked by PPARγ agonists Rosiglitazone and 1-O-hexadecyl-2-azeleoyl-phosphatidylcholine. In contrast, stearoyl-oxovaleryl phosphatidylcholine, a PPARα agonist and polypeptide epidermal …

Combined Tlr And Cd40 Triggering Induces Potent Cd8+ T Cell Expansion With Variable Dependence On Type I Ifn, Cory L. Ahonen, Christie L. Doxsee, Sean M. M. Mcgurran, Tony R. Riter, William F. Wade, Richard J. Barth, John P. Vasilakos, Randolph J. Noelle, Ross M. Kedl

Dartmouth Scholarship

Toll-like receptors are important in the activation of innate immunity, and CD40 is a molecule critical for many T and B cell responses. Whereas agonists for either pathway have been used as vaccine adjuvants, we show that a combination of Toll-like receptor (TLR)7 and CD40 agonists synergize to stimulate CD8+ T cell responses 10–20-fold greater than the use of either agonist alone. Antigen-specific CD8+ T cells elicited from combination CD40/TLR7 treatment demonstrated both lytic activities and interferon (IFN)γ production and an enhanced secondary response to antigenic challenge. Agonists for TLRs 2/6, 3, 4, and 9 also synergized with …

Phylogenetic Systematics And Evolution Within The Family Scincidae, Alison Swindle Whiting Mar 2004

Phylogenetic Systematics And Evolution Within The Family Scincidae, Alison Swindle Whiting

Theses and Dissertations

Scincidae (skinks) comprise one of the largest families of lizards, and the more than 1300 species show great variation in body size and form, and are found worldwide in a diversity of habitats. The group presents many interesting questions ranging from the colonization of oceanic islands, to the evolution of limb loss, yet most of these and other questions remain understudied. The purpose of this dissertation is to use multiple mitochonidrial and nuclear DNA markers in connection with current cladistic methods to address evolutionary questions at many levels within Scincidae. In chapter one, a molecular phylogenetic study, based on six …

Locking The Β3 Integrin I-Like Domain Into High And Low Affinity Conformations With Disulfides, Bing Hao Luo, Junichi Takagi, Timothy A. Springer Mar 2004

Locking The Β3 Integrin I-Like Domain Into High And Low Affinity Conformations With Disulfides, Bing Hao Luo, Junichi Takagi, Timothy A. Springer

Faculty Publications

Although integrin α subunit I domains exist in multiple conformations, it is controversial whether integrin β subunit I-like domains undergo structurally analogous movements of the α7-helix that are linked to affinity for ligand. Disulfide bonds were introduced into the β3 integrin I-like domain to lock its β6-α7 loop and α7-helix in two distinct conformations. Soluble ligand binding, ligand mimetic mAb binding and cell adhesion studies showed that disulfide-bonded receptor αIIbβ3T329C/A347C was locked in a low affinity state, and dithiothreitol treatment restored the capability of being activated to high affinity binding; by contrast, disulfide-bonded αIIbβ3V332C/M335C was locked in a high affinity …

Coming Full Circle With Boyd's Ooda Loop Ideas: An Analysis Of Innovation Diffusion And Evolution, William S. Angerman Mar 2004

Coming Full Circle With Boyd's Ooda Loop Ideas: An Analysis Of Innovation Diffusion And Evolution, William S. Angerman

Theses and Dissertations

The Observe-Orient-Decide-Act (OODA) Loop ideas of Air Force Colonel John Boyd have impacted the Department of Defense (DoD), influenced military thought, paved the way for operational change, and helped to shape fighting doctrines. A wide variety of OODA Loop ideas and interpretations exist in the literature, but are unorganized and have not undergone holistic study to determine how Boyd's ideas have spread or changed over time. As such, this research analyzed a quarter century (1976-2003) sample of the OODA Loop literature to examine the diffusion and evolution of OODA Loop ideas since Boyd's original conceptualizations. This research used qualitative data …
