White Dogs And Angels, Dianne Alford
White Dogs And Angels, Dianne Alford
English Theses & Dissertations
The narrative of American whiskey criss-crosses America's own story line and has survived open rebellion, scandalous rings, monopolizing trusts, false labeling, hellfire and brimstone, Prohibition, moonshine, and industry consolidation to emerge again from the ashes of politics and the abandonment of a fickle public. The story of this native product stands as a metaphor for the Americans who make it and perhaps for the American spirit in general—simple and complex, smooth and spicy, rustic and sophisticated, obliging and independent, but above all, enduring.
America's whiskey industry developed and was refined hand-in-hand with America's own development and refinement. In 1830, the …
Bio-Optical Properties Of The Arctic Waters: Empirical And Theoretical Observations, Jian Wang
Bio-Optical Properties Of The Arctic Waters: Empirical And Theoretical Observations, Jian Wang
OES Theses and Dissertations
Bio-optical observations were made during August 2000 in the Beaufort and Chukchi Seas. Chlorophyll a concentration (Chl) ranged from 0.068 to 18.51 mg chl m−3. Both total particulate and phytoplankton absorption at 443 nm were closely correlated with chlorophyll concentration. There is no strong correlation between chlorophyll concentration and absorption by soluble materials or nonpigmented particulates. Absorption, scattering, and attenuation all show strong first-order spectral relationships. Two semianalytical remote sensing reflectance models were evaluated and validated using bio-optical data collected in this region. Both models were proficient at retrieving chlorophyll concentration, phytoplankton absorption coefficients, and particulate backscattering coefficients. …

English Theses & Dissertations
In February of 1980, Joe Kohn arrived in my dorm room at Saint Bonaventure University where I was then a freshman. For the next several months we talked about my planned bicycle trip across the United States, recounted his own ride to Brazil, and uncovered dark stories from his three years in Zaire. One night he told me of an idea he had: He planned to canoe the entire length of the Congo River alone. For the following year or so, we mapped routes and studied the dangers. He left in the late fall of 1980, but his anticipated completion …

Scaling And Characterization Of Direct Current Glow Discharge Plasma In Atmospheric Air, Abdel-Aleam Hefney Mohamed
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
A microhollow cathode discharge was used as a plasma cathode to sustain a stable direct current glow discharge in atmospheric pressure air. The volumetric scale of glow discharge increased from the millimeter to the centimeter range by extending the plasma in lateral and axial directions. In the axial direction, the length of the glow discharge column was varied from 1 mm to 2 cm, with the sustaining voltage increasing linearly with the glow discharge column length. Extension in the lateral direction was obtained by operating discharges in parallel. The glow discharge plasma of the parallel discharge columns was found to …

Workflow management systems (WfMSs) have been used to support various types of business processes for more than a decade now. In workflows or Web processes for e-commerce and Web service applications, suppliers and customers define a binding agreement or contract between the two parties, specifying quality of service (QoS) items such as products or services to be delivered, deadlines, quality of products, and cost of services. The management of QoS metrics directly impacts the success of organizations participating in e-commerce. Therefore, when services or products are created or managed using workflows or Web processes, the underlying workflow engine must accept …
Chronic Worry As Avoidance Of Arousal, Louis B. Laguna, Lindsay S. Ham, Debra A. Hope, Christopher Bell
Chronic Worry As Avoidance Of Arousal, Louis B. Laguna, Lindsay S. Ham, Debra A. Hope, Christopher Bell
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
Previous research suggests that worry is primarily a verbal-linguistic activity that may serve as a method of cognitive avoidance of fearful imagery. The purpose of the present study was to examine cognitive avoidance in high worriers (N = 22) and low worriers (N = 24) using psychophysiological measures and a modified dichotic listening task. The task involved presenting neutral words into an unattending ear while worry or neutral scenarios were presented into the attending ear. Participants were given a surprise word recognition test of the words presented to provide evidence of cognitive avoidance beyond self-report. Contrary to the …
The Ustad: Domesticating The Other From With(In/Out), Anilkumar Payyappilly Vijayan
The Ustad: Domesticating The Other From With(In/Out), Anilkumar Payyappilly Vijayan
Journal of Religion & Film
With the help of a post-90 film of Keralam - a state that has acquired a literacy rate of above 95 percent and projects itself as liberal and secular by not conceding even a single seat to the Hindutva forces either in the State Legislative Assembly or the Central Parliament after its formation in 1956 - I plan to demonstrate how hegemonic ideologies of history and religion oozed into the sphere of aesthetic representation. The narrative of the film The Ustad oscillates between the two polarities of the Janus-faced hero. And my expectation in the following pages is to point …
Models, Composability, And Validity, Eric Werner Weisel
Models, Composability, And Validity, Eric Werner Weisel
Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Composability is the capability to select and assemble simulation components in various combinations into simulation systems to satisfy specific user requirements. The defining characteristic of composability is the ability to combine and recombine components into different simulation systems for different purposes. The ability to compose simulation systems from repositories of reusable components has been a highly sought after goal among modeling and simulation developers. The expected benefits of robust, general composability include reduced simulation development cost and time, increased validity and reliability of simulation results, and increased involvement of simulation users in the process. Consequently, composability is an active research …
Prediction Of Rigid Body Aircraft Acceleration Response Due To Atmospheric Disturbances, Billy Keith Buck
Prediction Of Rigid Body Aircraft Acceleration Response Due To Atmospheric Disturbances, Billy Keith Buck
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Methodology to predict aircraft transient motion resulting from flight within an unsteady atmospheric environment, coupled with validation using flight test data is proposed. A family of five linear dynamic models is developed for describing the normal acceleration throughout an aircraft cabin due to vertical gust excitation. The five models successively build upon each other by incorporating higher fidelity gust penetration effects while simultaneously maintaining a unified modeling framework. Six wind fields reconstructed from flight test data are used to excite the vehicle models. Simulation responses are compared with forward, center, and aft accelerometer response data recorded during the test. Each …

Relating Water And Otolith Chemistry In Chesapeake Bay, And Their Potential To Identify Essential Seagrass Habitats For Juveniles Of An Estuarine-Dependent Fish, Spotted Seatrout (Cynoscion Nebulosus), Emmanis Dorval
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
A quantitative understanding of habitat use of estuarine-dependent fishes is critical to the conservation of their most essential habitats. Because recruitment and fitness may be influenced by the quality of juvenile habitats, developing methods to quantify habitat-specific survivorship is pivotal to such understanding. An initial step to quantify survivorship is to validate the habitat-specific natural tags contained in otoliths. To this aim I investigated the variability in the chemistry of surface waters and otoliths of juvenile spotted seatrout, Cynoscion nebulosus, in five seagrass habitats of Chesapeake Bay, namely: Potomac, Rappahannock, York, Island, and Eastern Shore. I measured Mg, Ca, …
Seed Bank Response To Fire And Successional Trajectory Of A Virginia Small Depression Pocosin, Jay F. Bolin
Seed Bank Response To Fire And Successional Trajectory Of A Virginia Small Depression Pocosin, Jay F. Bolin
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
Pocosins are depressional wetlands maintained by fire. Plants in fire adapted systems can use a variety of mechanisms for survival and recruitment. I examined the seed bank response to fire (500 to 700 °C) and wet heat treatments (50 and 75 °C) in a Virginia small depression pocosin. I quantified seedling abundance, richness, and Sphagnum density. Extant vegetation was sampled with a nested plot design at each seed bank sampling area. The seed flora was compared with the extant vegetation at three size classes with Sorenson similarity values. Data from the fire treatment indicates that a simulated drought burn may …

Applying The Transtheoretical Model To Cigarette Smoking By Pregnant And Parenting Adolescent Females, Barbara Mary Sussex
Dissertations and Theses
An unacceptably high number of pregnant and parenting adolescent females smoke cigarettes, and the majority who quit during pregnancy relapse within six months postpartum. This dissertation examined measures from the Transtheoretical Model of Change (TMC) and variables associated with smoking behavior in a population of pregnant and parenting females 18 years-of-age and under. Data were from the baseline survey of 245 young women enrolled in a three-year randomized controlled trial through a teen parent program in Portland, Oregon. The objectives were: 1) to investigate whether factors identified in the literature as associated with initiating and quitting smoking were associated with …

The Effects Of Ankle Taping And Spatting On The Reaction Times Of The Supporting Musculature Of The Ankle Before And After Exercise In Healthy And Functionally Unstable Ankles, Jennifer I. Mckenzie
Human Movement Studies & Special Education Theses & Dissertations
Ankle taping is a common practice in the athletic training room, but there is minimal evidence to support its effectiveness in enhancing muscle activation. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of ankle taping on muscle activation following sudden inversion in functionally unstable and healthy ankles before and after exercise. Fourteen recreational athletes with a unilateral functionally unstable ankle volunteered to participate. Surface EMG electrodes were placed on the peroneals and anterior tibialis muscles of both extremities. Each subject received four treatment conditions; ankle taping, ankle taping with spatting, spatting, and no tape in a randomly assigned, …
Determinants Of Paternal Involvement In Childcare In Dual-Earner Families With Preschool Children, Julie N. Jacobs
Determinants Of Paternal Involvement In Childcare In Dual-Earner Families With Preschool Children, Julie N. Jacobs
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
Dual-earner parents (N = 119) of preschool children enrolled in licensed childcare centers completed anonymous questionnaires that examined work and family variables as related to paternal involvement in three areas: engagement (i.e., one-on-one interaction with the child), responsibility (i.e., taking care of the child*s needs), and accessibility (i.e., being available to the child without directly interacting). Fathers' reports of responsibility were predicted by beliefs about fathering and structural variables (i.e., hours worked). Similarly, fathers' beliefs about fathering and efficacy in the parenting role predicted fathers' reports of engagement. Fathers' reports of accessibility were predicted by fathers' perceived competence in parenting …

Soil Fungi Alter Interactions Between The Invader Centaurea Maculosa And North American Natives, Ragan M. Callaway, Giles C. Thelen, Sara Barth, Philip W. Ramsey, James E. Gannon
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Soil microbes may affect the way exotic invasive plants interact with native neighbors. We investigated the effects of soil fungi on interactions between the invasive weed Centaurea maculosa (spotted knapweed) and six species native to the intermountain prairies of the northwestern United States. We also compared the effect of C. maculosa on the composition of the soil microbial community to that of the native species. In the field, fungicide (Benomyl) reduced AM mycorrhizal colonization of C. maculosa roots by >80%. Fungicide did not significantly reduce non-AM fungi. When grown alone, the biomass of C. maculosa was not affected by the …

Qtc Is Associated With Obesity And Physical Activity Level For African American Females, C. Jayne Brahler
Health and Sport Science Faculty Publications
Long QT syndrome (LQTS) is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular or ischemic disease mortality. Obesity as a cause for acquired LQTS in otherwise healthy individuals is rapidly gaining the attention of the scientific community. African American people have a higher incidence of obesity compared to Caucasians, yet race-specific information is not available for their prevalence of LQTS. Chronic physical activity can help reduce the incidence of obesity, yet little is known about the effects of chronic physical activity on acquired LQTS. Subjects in this study were a volunteer sample of African American mothers (21-53 yr, n = 44) and …

Error As Means To Discovery, Kevin C. Elliott
Error As Means To Discovery, Kevin C. Elliott
Faculty Publications
This paper argues, first, that recent studies of experimentation, most notably by Deborah Mayo, provide the conceptual resources to describe scientific discovery’s early stages as error-probing processes. Second, it shows that this description yields greater understanding of those early stages, including the challenges that they pose, the research strategies associated with them, and their influence on the rest of the discovery process. Throughout, the paper examines the phenomenon of ‘‘chemical hormesis’’ (i.e., anomalous low-dose effects from toxic chemicals) as a case study that is important not only for the biological sciences but also for contemporary public policy. The resulting analysis …
